The last time the RS4 was on the channel, it was before RBR levelled up to the unique channel that you guys enjoy today, so I’ve never given it the presentation that it deserves here on my canvas for you! That changes today, as I’ll take you through the full history of the “true” #AudiSport wagon, leading to this facelift!
The RS4’s birth is linked to the birth fo Audi Sport itself, going back to the very first RS named car. And that was the Audi 80 RS2. It was a bold statement by Audi at the time, a sports wagon built with the help of Porsche - you’ll see the 911 wheels and brakes and much more - it was even built in Zuffenhausen and features Porsche parts throughout, along with heavy modifications to the suspension and more. The highlight was the engine, Porsche tuned Audi’s most powerful 2.2 litre 5 cylinder engine to produce 315BHP. 0-60 was a quick 5.4 seconds, and the 0-30 MPH was clocked faster than the McLaren F1!!
A whole 5 years later came the first RS4 B5, before any RS6 was created, this was the fast Audi wagon. It had a 2.7 twin turbo V6 from Cosworth, with 380 BHP and a 0-60 of 4.9 seconds. It was so popular, Audi doubled their original production estimates for this car.
In 2005, came the natural V8 version in the B7. This time available in Sedan and cabriolet versions too. The V8 made 420BHP, healthy even by today’s standards, though with a similar 0-60. It also had a clever asymmetrical torque control Quattro system, giving 40% power on front and 60% on the rear. It was also the only one in class to offer carbon ceramics at the time, and the last ever to be manual only!
2012 Saw a return to Wagon only in the B8, still a natural v8 but this time paired to a dual clutch gearbox, it has the same horsepower as our car today at 450 BHP, though the S-Tronic of course made the 0-60 faster. It was the last time we will see a V8, and to my eyes, the most muscular #Audi #RS4 ever it just looks like that dude in the gym forever stuck in bulking season!
Fast forward to our pre-facelift, B9 first version. Once again linking to Porsche like the RS2, by sharing the then new V6 twin turbo engine, and linking to the B5 with the V6 element too. It’s a hot V too, so a very responsive natural feeling engine. Whole car is 35kg lighter thus than it’s predecessor. Quattro system as with the B8 goes up to 85% to the rear, essentially giving some nice rear wheel feeling, and the Gearbox is a torque converter this time.
Our new car, essentially the same formula. Few changes, much like rivals AMG and M did with their facelifts. Main news, Its lighter with sound deadening removed along with other tweaks, giving over 100kg difference now vs the old V8. The gearbox is apparently, snappier, with new software. And we have a host of tech changed inside too. But is it enough vs the M3 and C63S, and where does it stand vs the RS6? Today we explore:

Will life become harder or easier for the RS4 in the future? 🤔 For now, it has enough power, better steering and a comparable overall package vs the big brother RS6. Think my E Tron RS4 is on the mark, or will it be a combustion engine again?
Well, Audi has stated that they will not be developing ANY new internal combustion engines. So perhaps a hybridized version of this 2.9TT or even a hybridized 2.5T 5-cylinder from the RS3 would work in the near term. But sadly, I think we all know the tech from the RS E-tron GT will eventually trickle down to the rest of the RS cars.
It has better turn in, but it doesnt handle as well as the RS6 - as the RS6 stays flatter due to its self levelling suspension - I own and have tracked both... the RS4 is notably slower on track... Also are you comparing the air suspension equipped model or the DRC version? RS6s steering is more GT centric as its a bigger car, tailored to someone who wants a more refined package... You opinion is really tailored to 20 somethings who probably shouldn't be buying $100k cars on credit in the first place and dont have kids or loads to carry...nor want something that can run at 155mph on the autobahn in supreme comfort - for that, there almost isn't a better car than an RS6 - certainly not the E63s which is German for hemorrhoids
You're only partly right. The RS6 simply provides more space and more power. I think the RS4 is amazing but I test drove it a few times and it is just too small when I want to go on holiday with my wife and my 2 kids. So RS4 is not an option for me, RS6 is.

The facelifted one looked like a diesel A4 with big wheels and wide fenders. Pre-facelift ones looked like an RS4.

Have had my B9 pre face lift for nearly 3 years. Still love it, fantastic all rounder! Don’t really like the front of the new fave lift except the headlights.

Looks better, sounds better and cost less.
No piano black in the interior, proper MMI without touchscreen, yeah prefacelift is just better package in my opinion.

I love this car. I have the Vorsprung edition in Daytona Grey. Opening the taps in Dynamic on the slip road at Castle Donington onto the A50 Derby Southern Bypass brings a very juvenile grin to my face. She’s a hooligan one moment and docile the next.
For me, she’s the ultimate fast Audi wagon daily driver.

A good enough review that I subscribed. Having been an Audi owner, I am aware of their quality of build and design, and their practicality, even in the sport models. This car especially, which the reviewer correctly describes as a mid-level sports model, is capable of high performance yet does not call too much attention to itself.
It’s a shame the transmission is overly aggressive, requiring the driver to tippy-toe it even in normal mode. And then there is Audi’s traditional front weight bias, which no Quattro system can neutralize - the laws of physics dictate that this car is going to push in corners, compromising its full-out sport driving potential.
Still, this remains one of the most desirable compact sport wagons out there, and I have no doubt that Audi will find a way to keep the tradition alive.
For me when you say fast wagon, Audi wins by heritage. BMW M3 is probably going to be faster but much uglier. Also I think the Audi RS cars are the most comfortable ones as luxury daily cars. They are less aggressive than competitors but when in comes to comfort mode it’s just right.

love the rs4 avant, great to compare against the m3 and c63 amg, just wonder why one would compare it with the rs6. I feel the rs6 is for the big-sized wagons performance-enthusiasts and the rs4 for the mid-sized wagon performance-enthusiasts

@@a23thm77 Undecided. Don't really need the estate shape, but there's not a lot to choose from around this price range - it's either C63 (about to be superseded so wait to see what that's like) M3 (ugly af) or RS4 .

@@PurpleTT99 How about getting RS5 Sportback instead? It has the same engine and very similar interior but instead of an estate it's a sedan shape with hatchback boot. Still miles away more practical than regular saloon but way cooler than estate as well.

Hello…I have a C43 facelift and I love it! But I only got it because I couldn’t afford the RS4 at that time. Now I can but not sure if I should go for it!
I mean, my C43 hasnt asked anything, I got 45K km and it is great. But I am in love with the RS4!
So here is the question, shall I go for a used RS4 and if yes, which one? The pre or the face lift? Obviously, for the pre face lift, I will have to add a small amount on top compared with the face lift! Or I go for a new one, which I can spec it myself (I can also get 15-20% discount)?
I have no idea about the maintenance cost of the RS4!

Another great video. Whilst there are many points I agree with, my current route has been RS6, RS5 (currently), and back to RS6 (tomorrow). The RS5 (and if course RS4) are cool for sure, but I found the engine and overall build quite underwhelming. The engine seems a bit strained, like its working flat out, whereas the RS6 with the V8 has so much more to give.
a real down to earth review... non of those journos always say if a car can't oversteer is no fun.... RS4 is always designed as a daily used car as almost all owners don't bring them to tracks

Would be interesting to see this go up against, say, a Velar SV Autobiography. The popularity of SUVs, at least in North America, has really killed the estate (wagon) segment. But people need to be reminded of the significant difference in driving dynamics between the two types of vehicles.
Land Rover is good for off-roading that’s all x3 competition would leave these two behind

I’ve had the RS4 and Land Rover. The RS4 is a far better car in America, the Land Rover is better in more extreme conditions - off-road, water. I would choose the RS4 every single day.
Personally, I think any of these in a sedan would be sooooo sick!!! Just like the B7 RS4

Ah, the B7 RS4. I'm an M3 kind of person, but given choices I'd pick RS4 B7 over normal E46 M3. Harder choice when E90 M3 is presented but I'd still pick RS4. But if W204 C63 is around you know I wouldn't bother with either the RS4 or M3.

Typical Audi laggy transmission response. Either you go full comfort or full dynamic sport. Other settings are rubbish. They need to fix that issue. I had a 2018 S5 SB and it was BAD on that model. Made me change over to Porsche for my next project car.

You will definitely notice the lack of power compared to the RS6.
Only pick the RS4 if your drive and garage are not wide enough or you are under 5' 10" tall.
Would go Macan Turbo instead.
The Audi looks better than the BMW Imo,And would have one over a BMW..The car looks stunning in red and would look smart with a set of Vosson uv1 wheels on.

Why do Audi persist with the "stuck on" ipad on the dash for the 2021 A4's? It just smacks of being a cheap afterthought.

Every new car that comes outs was designed like 4 years before. So by the time Audi sees the complains about the ipad screen they already put out several years of it

The BMW 3 series have had a "inbuilt" system for over 10 years now.
I know with the previous A8s, at least, with its "ipad" system, you could make it disappear into the dashboard.

well, according to manufacturer, it weights 1820kg. So this is extremely heavy chunk of metal, I'd say.
B5 is the best looking
I don’t see why you need the RS6 either, this sounds better, (I’m sorry, it really does) it’s less expensive, it’s smaller, easier to thread through town, tech and infotainment is largely similar with the B9 facelift and it’s still practical enough. Okay it doesn’t look quite as menacingly cool as the new RS6, but I would only buy that car if I want a V8 engine. Other than that, RS4 all day everyday. But I think the pre-facelift B9 looks nicer on the front end, the facelift looks “fishy”.
2 things:
1) the RS6 provides more space; the RS4 would be too small for me (+ wife + 2 kids)
2) V8
@@nitschi How big are the kids? If they’re still small and you carry small passengers in the back, the RS4 is still big enough. But you want a V8, so that’s why you buy the RS6. The main reason why you have an RS6 over an RS4 is to have the V8, also more aggressive styling.
@@magnustan841 they're 2 and 6. of course they'd fit perfectly in the RS4 as well, but it's not only about "fitting into the seats" it's also about the "comfort of space", as stupid as this may sound.
It's just a different, more spacious feeling in the RS6, both for us parents and the kids. Of course, that's "complaining at a high level" and the RS4 is certainly adequate; after all, it's a mid-size station wagon.
And yes, the V8. ;)

@@magnustan841 2019 Audi S6 C8 (the infamous TDI version; let's just call it a 3.0 TDI, it's not an S6 in my opinion), but I'll pick up my RS6 in May :)
Not as an attractive option to me since the v8 was dumped. The v6 doesn’t do it for me so it may as well go electric
