    Playing in a band is fantastic. The energy and sound waves coming from the amps is intoxicating. I actually played in a few bands back in the late 80s early 90s. I'm now teaching my grandson drums so we can jam together.

    Love the channel, Emily! My daughter is 17 and started playing about the same time you did, I would bet you guys would be best friends. One thing she does to get stage time is playing open jams. It has improved her skills playing with other musicians and really boosted her confidence. It's hard for young people to find other musicians these days. Would highly recommend.

    I once went into every guitar store in a 50 mile radius of me over about a months time attempting to try out most things on the market and for me although I love the tone of a Les Paul loaded up with EMG’s like what Zack Wylde plays for pure tone overall the fast action playing ergonomics and overall balanced tone I would give the nod to the PRS Custom 24 family (SE included) or the Ibanez Vai models. A lot of people don’t know that PRS himself was mentored by a small guitar luthier out of North Carolina who has made guitars on and off since the 1970’s named Terry McInturff. My all time favorite guitar and main axe is a McInturff Polaris- it’s like if a PRS and Les Paul blend more or less. They are rare to find but sometimes they do pop up on eBay.
    My favorite guitarist who inspired me to start playing is Mark Tremonti (check out ‘Avo Ravi Taco Salad’ and Alter Bridge’s Blackbird album, some of Mark’s best work IMO) I was a big Metallica and metal fan in general as a young teen but found them and a lot of people in that genres vibe kinda dark and toxic as I got older and realized more of what they were about and how negative a lot of metal music (I consider Dokken, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, etc. Hard Rock or 80’s rock) really is and Tremonti has that metal influence without all the dark negative lyrics a lot of metal has (Mark was also a Big Led Zeppelin fan and brings that 70’s rock sensibility to it all just like my first guitar teacher who taught me so much as we lived on Page and Hendrix) plus he’s into all kinds of other music like I am (not just rock also a blues and jazz fan-I highly recommend Joe Pass, Charlie Byrd, Grant Green, Robbin Ford, Bernard Allison, B.B. King, Jim Hall, and Pat Martino’s guitar work) and it shines through in the music. His solo albums to me as Tremonti band and the earlier first two Alter Bridge albums are my favorite ones and the very first Creed album was really good too. I think a solid diet of Zeppelin as a young musician gives a band a nice foundation for painting their sonic aesthetic with different styles (acoustic, altered tunings, blues, folk, and even some jazz fusion), and pop sensibility to create relatable melodic music without being cheesy or too soft like studio label controlled pop artist top 40 rubbish and writing interesting rock music that still very much rocks. Mark always said if you want people to know who you are as a musician as their are so many people out here playing music then you really have to write good songs above all else as that’s more important than the solos and shredding (that’s why I’ve always found Tremonti and Van Halen s easy to listen to is the melodys, harmony, and song writing are all their on top of the excellent guitar riffs and solos that inspire you as a guitarist where most of these guys who can play 16th notes at 180bpm faster than everyone else for the most part tend to write lousy songs) but my first guitar teacher also said if all you want to do is jam out with your combo amp in your living room then that’s cool too. He was around in the 70’s in Cleveland Ohio scene playing gigs when Rush ‘Working Man’ by Rush is some great guitar work if you’ve never heard it before) first started playing club gigs living out of their van coming down to play in the States from their hometown/Toronto ON in their very early years as a band.

    It's nice to see other young people enjoying 80s rock aswell. I also started about 3 years ago back in high school. My influences went like this Beatles/Eagles/CCR/Deep Purple/Rainbow/Bon Jovi/ Van Halen/Motley Crue/Dokken/Ratt. Van Halen and Ratt have become my favourite bands along with beatles. You seem to have gotten pretty large guitar collection in a short time. I'm still "only" at 5 guitars. When Final exams were coming up my guitar addiction was at all time high I used to play 7h per day. Nowdays I only play 2-4 hours. My first guitar has stayed my favourite even tough it only cost 100€. Later down the line I swapped the bridge pickup. Last summer I already had to sand the frets as they were so worn out...

    By the way have you heard Steve Vai's work with Frank Zappa and David Lee Roth? Never liked much of his instrumentals, but dude, I LOVE his work with those two guys! His best in my opinion!
    Also I agree with your stance on 80's vs 90's music. 80's all day because the standards musicians had to live up to were much higher! 🤘

    I used to train my ear by learning whatever song came up on MTV. You know, back when it was acutely music television. If you’re able, I do recommend you join a band. Nothing helps you to grow as a musician than playing with other musicians. I not only got better as a guitarist, it forced me to stretch as a musician. I learned to adjust my playing style to the song and to the group.

    Your opinion on 80’s bands being musicians is spot on. I used to love the male singers who sang in a very high register. Steve Perry type singers and the 80’s had a lot of that and it sounded so beautiful. Music rocked hard but was also deep and beautiful. Do you like Mick Mars (Motley Crue)? Another band that is from the time and still going today is Iron Maiden. Their music is a little more metal but they do a lot of harmonies with two lead guitarists and the singer (Bruce Dickinson) has a very 80’s voice. One deep cut from Iron Maiden that has an awesome 80’s hair band sound is “out of the silent planet”. That song will give you a representation of the vocal power of the band too.

    • @guitarbyemily
      @guitarbyemily  3 місяці тому +1

    • @undertakerrick
      @undertakerrick 3 місяці тому

      @@guitarbyemily Mick’s guitar playing and songwriting is single handily what made their music sound as good as it did. And he was also the nice one in the band. He didn’t get into the majority of debauchery that Motley Crue is known for. And with a spinal crushing condition he still went out there and played his heart out for their reunion before they abandoned him.

I think most of us who are subscribed to your channel have a long list of faves as well. Definitely keep going. CIao! I was jamming with your Guitar By Emily tone yesterday as a matter of fact. Just jamming, making up riffs as I went along. As I've said before, it is a very cool tone. I was playing in dropped D yesterday which made it even heavier. In my opinion EVH's solo on the Live Without A Net tape is the best recorded live guitar solo ever. You have a couple of my dream guitars in your arsenal. The white Jem and the JS2480. I've also always wanted what's called a Jem Woody. A natural wood finish, antiqued, it just looks really cool! Lol I've always been into natural wood grain guitars. From my mahogany Ibanez 540S to my current EVH Wolfgang with a natural Bocote top. Thru the years I've gotten picks from Satriani, Vai, Lynch, Michael Wilton of Queensryche, Eric Johnson, and more. Always an awesome momento. Would have loved to get an EVH pick but was never close enough to get one. Again, I have to ask, as a college student and being so young, how are you able to amass this great collection of guitars? Anyways, keep up the good work! Paul in Sicily

Anyhow, check out this video of him playing their song Green Tinted 60s Mind. I like this video because as guitar players, we like to see the closeup of the original artist playing the song. Sadly, Mr. Big are on their final tour. If you get a chance to see them, I highly recommend going. They will be in Ohio in May. ua-cam.com/video/yOusR-8ZTX4/v-deo.html

    First thank your hard work creating and sharing. You and your work are apricated.
    But the "Van Halen Eruption" My jaw dropped" comment kinda' sent me on a mental tangent a bit, You must have lead a very sheltered/limited; musical life growing up at least guitar player-wise?
    Yeah Always .. " Eddie Van Halen" To me sounds at best ?
    Like? A 16 or 17 year old "Tina S". on a bad day.
    To me he was; Just the guitar player in David Lee Roth's backup band,. IMO.
    Players like Alvin Lee were shredding cleaner than "Eddie" in the 60's & early 70's.
    Besides the "Hot For Teacher & Jump solos' were better than eruption anyway..
    I mean we like who we like .. But we need to be a little clinical when describing and relating an artist abilities to an abundance. Not just our feelings of nostalgia and Hyperbole.
    Just Say.n.
    Anyway? .. Peace Out and good luck with your journey.
