- Recently I asked my email list to submit videos of their guitar tone for a "Rate Your Tone" video and what I got back was pretty impressive! Heres my thoughts on your guitar tone.

Blues guy here! Thanks so much for reviewing my tone! Definitely gonna cut back that delay! And thank you for doing this type of video!
Great playing man!
Thanks bro!
Killing it bro! You blues dudes rock.
Ian you ripped man. That was awesome. Are you a Nashville guy? Whats your set up?
@@dubzga yes sir! In this video I’m using my Squier hardtail strat w/fender replacement neck, mxr Timmy mini, boss dd3, and katana artist.
Been seeing a lot of the "roast your tone/song/playing" videos on guitar YT recently. The legitimate constructive criticism and just overall positive vibe with these people's art was like a breath of fresh air
Definitely, already way too much negativity in UA-cam comments.
Reminds me of Adam Neely's series that started out as "how to not suck at music" but has since been reframed it into a more positive version of that.
Correction it’s rate or roast. Not just roast so don’t play on words just to suit your point. And the overwhelming majority of the rigs get rated not roasted and is widely positive so stop it kid. We all watch the same content.
100%! I knew Rhett would be constructive and this will actually help out a lot of people rather than just make them feel inferior.
I was pleasantly surprised. There's hope after all...
Hey o! Beauty and the Beast guy here. Thanks for checking out my tone! Means a lot.
I dig it, Man!
I really appreciate this type of content, Rhett -- constructive criticism from an accomplished musician helps everyone learn. Novices like me often don't know what we don't know and videos like this shine spotlights on new (to us) techniques, styles, etc...
I feel like not knowing is part of the magic- most people prefer most artists early stuff cause it’s raw and unpolished
@@nickk8650 Thats an awesome point Nick! How many albums would you rate as your favourite by an artist and its their first? By the same token though, a new artist is probably going to be given an inexperienced producer to cut their first album.... and even then, magic still happens. 😊
Hit it on the head brother 🤙
@@nickk8650 Nah that's a definite preference that depends on the person. The punk or lofi production thing is popular in some circles and not in others. Personally I enjoy it sometimes but I love lush production other days, just depends
@@CatmanJimbo Right. They're just two different things. The raw energy and attitude of punk is a beautiful thing, but so is the product of John Frusciante locking himself in the studio for a few days.
Really an outstanding video series Rhett.
That acoustic guitar was recorded with an SM7!? What an absolute legend.
One of the goat mic’s!
Just slap that mic in front of anything and it sounds pretty good. My friend that knows stuff told me to use a cloud lifter with it so it isn’t so noisy, so I do. Great mic if you don’t wanna have to tinker with anything. Less mic tinker time and more time to play guitar!
@@bradybills134 its a great drum mic too. i use it as an overhead pretty frequently
@@willderr1469 recorded an excellent album with two SM7s for overheads, X/Y
The Beauty and the Beast rendition is beautiful. He made his steel string sound really warm, so lovely
More proof talent is everywhere! Great work guys.
Also, such a cool idea for a video.
On the flip side, it's more validation that I am, in fact, trash.
@@Smitty_Werbenjagermanjenson LOL I was having the same emotion!
Your ability to critique while not sounding critical is astounding. Free, positive musical consulting! Great!
Agree, Rhett's a class act!
The third player with the STRAT gave me chills. MONSTER.
Thank you so much!!!
@@IanBennettGuitar you are a monster guitarist.
Me too! I watched it twice and got chills both times. At 6:22 he goes supernova and just fucking tears it apart. Spectacular playing @Ian Bennett.
@@sam-browne thanks so much Sam!!!!
@@IanBennettGuitar I like but don't love blues but I'd listen to you all day man. Tone, feel, playing, everything.
So, I was thinking “this is pretty cool… maybe I should think about submitting something?” And then around 5 seconds into Brady’s playing I was thinking “yeah… ok… maybe not then!” That was soooooo good 🥰
To be honest, I'd rather hear more shitty tone and shitty playing to get some actual criticism than very experienced players just looking to show off their skills.
Hey David. Submit stuff! There is always like some 10 year old kid in some country that can mop the floor with all of us. Don't let that hold you back!
@@MCMFF1 dig the mos def pic!
Brady is amazing
@ghost mall don’t compare bro. Somewhere in the world there is always some freak of nature that can shred...at like 4 years old. The internet puts them in front of our faces. The rest of us (the majority of us) are mere mortals.
Totally respect your input and thoughtful comments. Great to hear some other players as well. Hope there might be more. THANK YOU RHETT!
Thanks for using the Tidalcaster in this video buddy! She's looking and sounding great!
You built a beautiful guitfiddle, congrats!
I’m not sure what a Tidalcaster is….but I like it man!!!
I can't concentrate on the video when he has that thing out. Maybe he should sell it to me and buy a new screen for his phone.
Never ceases to amaze me how many terrific musicians there are out there. This video is another reminder. Kudos to all who submitted!
Diggin’ this for sure. Congrats to all who had the guts to submit a performance, well done! I would love to see more!!!
That rendition of beauty and the beast is absolutely jaw dropping
This is/was a great idea to do Rhett. All kinds of styles and technique. Most guitarists appreciate the efforts of others. May try and submit something for evaluation!
Good GOD that Nashville bar player had me whipping out my best stank faces the WHOLE way through.
That was some dank stank!
Thank you so much!
@@IanBennettGuitar Indeed man nice chops Glad to see playing instead of pedal wash .......which has its place of course Rhett was on point tho about delay on the fast playing Still sounded good though I keep my echo level pretty low Someone makes a tremolo and delay that the level stays down when playing and becomes more present in the space I use a Lovepedal EPH3 that's is a pretty good Schooled clone Very cool have a good weekend
This is a brilliant idea! Would love for you to make a series, as it’s fun to see a pro musician’s take but it’s also fun to just hear what other people have going on. Definitely got some ideas from these clips on different sounds and playing styles to implement
Going forward, maybe request that they do a quick rundown of the stuff they used? Pedals, amps, etc?
Yes, would be great as a series.
@@Halliday7895 …he’s a pro. he goes on tour and plays stadiums.
I loved how you looked at all the positives and lifted these guys up! What some great players and you nailed the critiques. Great job to the players and to you!
Pretty fun Rhett and I agree with and appreciate your insight on these players. More please.
Cheers!
Probably one of my favorite videos you've done. Hopefully we'll have a series out of this. Thank you.
Great idea. This helps us think about how to improve our own playing and tone. Thanks Rhett!
Particularly enjoyed this installment. Hope you do part 2!
Yes, yes please do more of these! Hearing your thoughts on tone against practical applications really brings a lot of what you have to say into a more understandable context. My favorite video of yours in a long time.
Excellent. It's great to hear you break it down and offer some insight. Kudos to everyone who contributed their vids.
Do more of these please!
Rhett this was a fantastic session. There’s so much to be learned from listening to you break down a given tone and playing style. I appreciate how you quickly cut to the chase, offer constructive criticism, and above give praise where praise is due. I congratulate the players who submitted videos. Wow. Your channel continues to evolve; it gets better and better. I say do more of these videos. Sp
I love this idea! Thought all the players did a great. Excellent comments on each of the videos. Would love to see more of this, and maybe one day I will get the courage to submit something.
This is going to blow up 👍🏻 great idea and your scoring is hilarious. ❤️ it!
This was fun! I'd be happy to see another episode of these :)
Awesome video idea and I hope it becomes a recurring thing. So fun to see all these talented people getting to share their work.
Good idea for a series Rhett! I'm constantly amazed at the level of talent thats out there. It takes a lot of courage to submit to a critique like this so kudos to all these players. Your tone and playing insights are spot on. Great job.
Would love to see more of this Rhett!! Keep killin it
Well done! Your perspective on the audio clips provided useful insight. The variety of styles in the video demonstrate the range of your community. Music brings people together.
Love that slide tone at the end - beautiful guitar too
I’d like to catch the next one! Very cool and fun to see other musicians on your shared platform.
I love that format, more of this!!
This is a great video. Its awesome seeing the players and other styles. It’s also great hearing the praise and constructive notes.
Love this series and what you’re doing here! Absolutely perfect idea. I really appreciate your honest critiques Rhett. I think it means a lot for all of us as guitar players and enthusiasts.

This was really cool!

LOVE this video man! Would to see more of these.
Dude these were great. Would definitely love to see more in the future!
Great idea… I love this. Showcasing folks and some good constructive feedback too. Nice. 👍
Great stuff. We definitely need more of these! Thanks for doing it.
It's always surprising to see how many talented people are not only interested in, but also actually playing music.
It's exciting. It's a good series you're starting there.
Personally, I would never dare submit.
So I admire the confidence of all these people. It's amazing.
Love this style of video rhett! definitely should be a series!!!
This is a great concept for a series!!!!
Cool premise for a series. Loved it!
this is a great video format. Can't wait to see more of these
Really love seeing some good professional feedback. You have good things to say and give everyone something to work on. Makes me wish I had you as a guitar teacher.
Great examples. Thanks to all who submitted for our education!
Not sure how the heck I missed this, wish I had been able to submit! As always, incredibly humble and great advice Rhett, I look forward to seeing more
I love this! Do this way more often!
Great concept - I really enjoyed it!
People did really good, and it's great to see what other players are coming up with!
Your tips and opinions are great too, and I'm sure we can all learn a lot from it - so please do keep this concept going!
Have a great weekend!
Love this video Rhett. Very good players out there. Like the approach of how your building people up not tearing them down.
Rhett, this was fantastic. Lots of useful reactions and most of all, you sharing the ways in which you evaluate tone, style, and performances overall. Short video but loads of content. Also hugely entertaining!
More, more....
You should DEFINITELY do more of these!!!
Great players on all these tracks.
Appreciate the insight into different tones and styles.
Thank you!
This was a great idea! I'll be watching for the next installment
Great idea Rhett. Enjoyed this video idea and look forward to more. Maybe I'll even be brave enough to send one in.
Congrats on the 400k. Love your content.
This is a great idea for a video! Keep them coming! Great job, Rhett!
Yes! More of this!
Your videos are great , thanks!!
Hello from France !
The Beauty and the beast guy should post the full performance. Superb playing and voicings
Great idea having listeners engaging more closely with your channel. Really like your supportive suggestions to the submissions, this is good teaching. Great stuff Rhett really enjoy your videos :)
More of these please, love it!
Thinking about plinking! Cheers Rhett!!
This is great, Rhett. So much talent out there. I really liked what you were saying about tones coming from the right hand.
Super cool video concept Rhett. Would love to see more episodes like this.
Loved this concept for videos. Please make more!
Great to see so many exercising their talent. Well done, all.
Gilmour played that solo on a Goldtop with P90's.
Really enjoyed this one, your tips were really insightful and constructive and all the players did a great job. You should do a video like this again for sure
love this video! please do more of these!
Great video! Would love to see more of these!
These are the kind of submission results I like. There is a variety of different playing and recording levels. From a live performer with someone filming, to high quality video and audio recording, to someone with just a webcam pointed at them, and limited audio recording. I wish I knew about it, but I like it more than the ones that just show the players with the best equipment and access to record a music video.
I love this type of criticism. It allows musicians from all types of genres to share knowledge and pass on very important information regarding, not only tone, but other important information that makes each and every one of us better performers/musicians. Keep up the wonderful work you do!
That’s a really good evaluation. Keep them coming.
Sooo money on your critiques Rhett! And a lot of fantastic playing in the video. We are all so unique in our styles. It’s nice how u can compartmentalize everyones uniqueness
Really great stuff! Would love to hear more.
Really enjoyed this video Rhett! I would watch more of these. Cheers from Sweden 😎
Props to everyone who submitted! And thanks to Rhett for a great idea and all of your insight
love the tips you give man, always great
Love this eye opening vids, the comments on the swampy guitar tones was so inspiring!
Congratulations on reaching 400k subs. Reward for your hard work 👍🎸🤘🏻
This was a fun idea. Some really great playing! If any of these people have UA-cam channels, you should link them! The only thing you missed on is the title of the video. You totally should have called it “Rhett My Tone.” I give this video 9/10 denim jackets 😆
Great content! So many things to consider for making tone! Thank you! 🤯
I really enjoyed this Rhett!!!
Fab advice. Thanks for sharing your experience & candour.
This was awesome constructive criticism and some fantastic player submissions! Love this series
