  • Attempting to fix my Micra's rusty sills by welding new metal on. I used a gasless MIG welder and 1.5mm steel which I shaped to try my best to recreate the sill's original shape but ended up having yo use filler... a lot of filler.

    This should have far more views. The work is - a solid effort. But the video - has lots of charm. Really nice.

    Just got a 98 micra like this. It needs the sills grind down,not replacement. Whatever that means.

    I like the blocks under the wheels to get height to work under the car.....but i'd still shove a couple of wheels underneath just in case......

    Did you find yourself blowing thru the existing thin metal?

    • @the_mintiest_micra
      @the_mintiest_micra  3 місяці тому

      In some cases yes, especially if the metal was still a bit rusty. If I were to do it again I'd definitely try to use a better welder.

      @@the_mintiest_micra I have a flux core welder and finding it difficult on think stuff. I tried putting another piece behind to reduce blow thru. It seemed to work ok

    Im wondering why after the welding you did not paint red oxidised paint on the bare metal then after its dry applying a good underseal to give it more protection.

      I did apply etch primer once I was done, decided to come back to it once I got better at welding and then underseal once I finish the other side too which I'll be doing very soon actually.👍

    solid mate i love my micra and it's just gone through MOT with advisories for corroded inner sills, corroded floor and corroded chassis. what sort of cost did you rack up for the metals/grinder/rig etc?

      I can't really remember exactly as I didn't keep track, but I've heard of people getting their sills fully done on K11s for 350-400ish (depends on how bad it is) at garages. I didn't do a great job in fairness, so I'd say going to a garage would be worth it, especially if you don't have a welder.

    So, since I commented on your tiktok has there been any more welding? What are the specs on your welder? If it's decent, maybe just some more practice, rather than buying a new one?

    How did it get on with mot and what setting was your welder set to please

    • @the_mintiest_micra
      @the_mintiest_micra  5 місяців тому

      Haven't taken it for a test yet but don't see why it wouldn't pass. Did the welding ages ago now so don't remember the settings, it was a really bad gasless mig with only 1, 2 and high, low settings. With a TIG I did the 1.6mm sill bits with around 35 and the 0.8mm with around 22amps.

    I want to take welding up sick and tired of being wacked at the costs then end up with out knowing a cowboy welder doing it. What migwelder are you using whats the other tools you are using.

      The more you do it the better you become this came from a guy who welds that was in his own words.

      I was using a Draper Storm Force Gasless Turbo MIG Welder 100A, I think. I dont have it anymore. A friend had the exact same type, and his worked way better for some reason on the same settings. There might've been something wrong with mine, but they're fairly solid and cheap if they work right. Apart from the welder, I just used a grinder, some wire brush drill attachments, some vice grips, and pliers to clean and bend the metal. With a bit of practice you'll get there.👍
