For the best picture on the mavic you want to use 2.7k, +1 sharpness, and probably d-cinelike (or d-log) and 25fps.
the mavic will start pixel binning and anything over 30fps and the option is really just there for the fpv goggles.
and at under +1 sharpness the mavic uses its own built in noise reduction that makes the picture more blurry.

    • @LucNegri

Is this a fact? Cant find any source that mavic uses built in noise reduction at under +1 sharpness

I've already purchased and received my Mavic Pro based your other videos. 3 days in I am certain it's the right one for me. It's amazing. I've already taken the 107 test and passed. The fact that it's smaller and less obnoxious was the last decider for me.

Comes down to portability Vs Camera. If you do lots of high end video work then it's the P4pro if your just starting out and want a drone for family holidays ect then it's the Mavic. I've just got in to all this and have absolutely no regrets in going for the Mavic.

You said you don't need to see the display on the Mavic controller. Sometimes you do. If the app crashes or signal is lost it is very reassuring to see the distance and RPM data on the controller assuring you that your drone is not lost or crashed. If you have hit RTH and it's flying back, you trust, but the app is showing you nothing that controller screen is better than 3D on IMAX - that's data from the missing bird! The distance is coming down, it's coming back, the battery level is adequate, hey I can even push forward on the right stick and accelerate it on its way home. If there was no display you'd just be waiting and hoping.

Mavic has just about same quality pic.. for less money.. but range is not a great of the P4.,. and mavic is lighter not good on windy conditions. P4 is about $1500...100% better. I will go always for the P4.

When I got my first drone, I was all about just flying around and enjoying that. Now it's all about the camera quality with the drone. The Phantom 4 Pro camera is just light years ahead of the Mavic. No more jitter and Flickr with the phantom 4 pro! And yes the mechanical shutter/adjustable aperture is a great feature and couldn't live without it! I paid $1299 for my P4P on Amazon. You just have to watch the price every day and sometimes every hour it changes! They do offer a special packages from various sellers with battery packs and other accessories at a special price.

Answers many questions I have been researching. Can't decide if I want to buy the P4P to go with my Mavic and P3P. Best part of the video for me was your suggested camera settings. I am sure if I were a photo expert I would know the best starting point but I am not. I just love flying these and do photos and videos for friends and family for free. So now I have a good starting point beyond the default settings for the Mavis. Thanks for taking the time and effort to do these reviews.

Ed, with regards to the device used for DJI GO4, I've had absolutely no issues with either my Android Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 or Note 5. I learned back when I had an Autel X-Star that video stream from most any drone requires very good video processing speed. Your HTC phone may lack in that area, but it isn't a matter of the DJI drones being "optimized" for iOS as much as graphic thoughput ability of the newer iOS phones or tablets. Earlier ones have had issues as you can see on a number of blogs. Also, which OS did DJI choose for the P4P+? iOS? Nope. Then again, probable due to the open architecture....
Thanks for this offering. Your vids are great!

Hi Ed, my take is P4P is really not an option if you are on the road once you have tried Mavic Pro. Especially when we ride the Electric Unicycles it would be annoying with a bulky P4. With that said there is room for improvement for the Mavic camera quality.

  • @JulianChen
    @JulianChen 7 років тому

    Hey Ed,
Great breakdown of the 2 drones. I also had a CRAP-TON of issues using my Mavic with my old HTC one m8 phone. I'd get about 70-failed connection at start-up, needing to restart the connection and then needing to put the phone in airplane mode often to 1) connect, and then 2) minimize chance of mid-flight disconnects. (The RC is always connected so I could always fly the Mavic, but I couldn't see, no liveview feed.)
All that changed when I finally got a new phone (Samsung S7). Since then, I've had ZERO connection issues at start up and during flight. My liveview only "hiccuped" once out of several dozen flights since switching to my s7. Perhaps something with HTC's hardware or software doesn't work well with the DJI app. Just some food for thought.
    Keep up the great videos.

Hi Ed - another fantastic vid - thanks:) Some follow ups - perhaps the subject for new vlog or for you to comment on?
You don't really answer the 'so what' / 'does it really make a difference' / 'will I notice' type questions. Also could you look at/clarify the following questions?
    1) For still image capture is the P4P miles ahead of the Mavic or is the Mavic still perfectly good?
    2) How do both drones compare in terms of FPV stability/cut outs (I have heard the Mavic is better)?
    3) How do the drones compare for aquiring and retaining satellites? Also, does one tend to get more than another?
    4) What is the real impact of the 60 vs 100Mbps bit rate on the user - why does it matter and is it really noticeable or can you live with what the Mavic has?
    5) Do you find yourself wishing you had apperture control on the Mavic or can you live without it?
    6) Do you feel the lack of P4P quality slow mo/high fps and dpi video is an issue on the Mavic or is it something you find you can make do with on the Mavic?
I would love to hear your views - I am stuck between buying one or the other and I think these will be the clinching points. That said it would be great if you could also do a 'so what'/'pragmatically speaking' type vlog looking at where each drone differs in terms quality and if it actually really matters to the average user in most situations?
Either way thanks so much for the vlogs they are so helpful and I interesting:)

    Hi, great companion video 👌🏼
My problem now is choosing between p4p and mavic air, I love the fact that the mavic air is able to do 100mbps too, but it has no log profile and the p4p has an 1' sensor, 20mpx, 60fps at 4k, mechanic shutter, changeable aperture, variable focus, more battery life, etc... Mavic air is a little great piece of tech and I have a big problem on hands.

  • @WhatIThinkNation
    @WhatIThinkNation 6 років тому

One little point having both units. The mavic has a more advanced lightbridge system it seems. Very few signal drop packet errors compared to p4p. Basically a more reliable flight during the 7km range from DJI.
Both great machines, have them both, love them both.
P4p will win photo quality hands down but it does scare people when its out, mavic looks like a toy drone.
Some pros dont use the mavic for professional work since they get criticized but in many ways both of these drones put the inspire 1 to shame for the price point.
    Thanks for the video content.

One detail that seems to be over looked by every UA-camr, the Mavic Pro you can fly with just the controller and hace all the info there without the need of the app(any phone or tablet). I would say thats a big note to the portability and the grab and go deal.

Thanks for the review Ed, I've subscribed to your channel some time ago, and your videos are the best!
I love my Mavic! but it's worth mentioning that the Mavic is more difficult (and potentially a pain) to catch if you're not too happy about landing in sand or on uneven terrain... The Phantom is a lot easier to catch in-air as you do not have to "disturb" the sensors at the bottom and can grab the legs. The Mavic does require some practice (and balls) to catch as your fingers are mere inches from the rotating kitchen knives it's equipped with - but when you figure it out, it's pretty easy to do (but still a bit scary)...

Here in NZ Mavic Combo NZD $2400.00.
Phantom 4 Pro depends where or who but NZD $2900. 00 to $3199.00 no extras.
But I am into Tubing so would love the P4pro for the video quality.

Thinking out loud. If DJI were to release an updated Mavic drone with the camera quality of the Phantom 4 Pro, surely it would be the end of the phantom series. Portability with superb camera quality would be a no brainer for todays buyers. Time will tell....

I would prefer the better camera. However I had the P3s which is the same size as the Phantom 4 pro. It was a pain in the butt to take literally a suitcase with me everywhere. The Mavic pro is so easy to take with me that I'm glad I went with the mavic. Small, light, portable, discrete, less intrusive, quieter, more stabile. Those are the advantages of the Mavic in my opinion.

Ed, since your video, DJI came out with the Crystalsky. It would take care of the problems with smart phones or tablets. A perfect match for the Mavic as I see it. Yeah, the price is high for a dedicated device, but DJI will support the Crystalsky. I'm thinking either the Mavic with the Crystalsky or the P4P+ for me. Still thinking. Thanks for the video you are awesome!

I just went ahead and bought a used p4p on amazon for $875 and used my extra money for sd card, filters, extra battery, low noise propellers, battery charging hub, and a high quality 1ft lighting cable. I think it’s worth buying used because you are getting the same drone and everything but someone already used it a little. Buying used should not affect your picture and who is going to know it’s used!

Probably the best comparison review I've seen. You favor the Mavic, but gave a level-headed fair assessment on both. Most comparisons reek of fanboy propaganda.
Your review helped push my decision toward the P4P, because I'll be using it professionally and the camera performance in low light along with the wider image are top priority. This shows there is a significant enough difference there to make the downsides of the P4P worth it.
    Thanks Ed! :)

    • @paulsmith1981
      @paulsmith1981 6 років тому

I went with the inspire 2 because the props lift after take off thus avoiding having countless shoots ruined by the props or skids in the shot. The downshoot is the weight and cost. The case is roughly the same size as a suitcase and is very heavy, especially if you are carrying extra batteries. I chose the s4 camera option because the other high end options being the x5 and x7 are extremely expensive, the x7 gimbal which has a 35mm sensor capable of shooting 6K in raw format, costs £2666 and the lenses costs further £1200 each. You will also need the chisel slate drive for the 5.2K and 6K footage which costs another £989 + the high end software like Apple ProRes £££
The inspire 2 platform is incredible, but you will need very deep pockets to get the most out of it.

I have had my Mavic Pro for a few months now and being a commercial user was starting to think, this very thought, which might be better. One needs at least 2 drone's if you do it professionally. Great video to help me think of the 4 Pro as my next purchase, real soon. The next question though, how about the Inspire 1 version 2 vs. the 4 Pro? Is the Inspire really that much better to warrant the jump in price? Have you flown an Inspire ever? Maybe rent one and do a similar comparison. My thought would be the 4 Pro does the job well enough, when considering the more expensive Inspire series, for what you get. Thanks for the very useful video's Ed!

I use my mavic pro with my s7edge and never had any problems with the live feed. Wanted to get the phantom but its not protable. would have been great if the mavic air was released with ocusynch. that would be the best drone for me.

Great presentation and comparison of DJI's flagship drones. Would it be fair to conclude that the Mavic needs a one inch sensor, for better video photography, plus DJI need to address the problems for Android users(ie they appear to favour Apple users).

I saw your new vid you posted.....my android phones worked eg: S7 edge and S7 and S6 Edge.....but my android tablet wouldn't work, I tested it by flashing a custom rom 5.1 it works fine but refreshed stock it still works......strange but tripping knox or something makes it work.....thx for making every video fun informative.

If the only problem with the Mavic is the camera, all we could use is another camera upgrade. The Phantom is loud, it is big, and people will notice that thing in the air a whole lot more and will be stopping you from doing your job, people asking for your credentials and so forth.

thanks for the very clear and detailed info about the differences, helps me a lot in making a better choice (probably the advanced) And yes, they should mix up these 2 drones.... mavic with the phantom camera would be the ultimate choice

Ed, being a complete novice, never flown a drone ever. I'm looking at the P4 pro having the obstacle avoidance along with one of the best camera quality without spending thousands. The whole reason for even wanting this unit is for shooting landscapes. Personnel use only. Ive shot tons of landscapes on the ground, now wanting to move forward from above. Your thoughts on how well one might do with the P4 Pro as far as flying. I know nothing is guaranteeed in flight. Your thoughts?

You may have mentioned it and I just didn't catch it but The Mavic uses OcuSync and I think The Phantom is still on Lightbridge. Ocusync is suppose to have less latency. Correct me if I'm wrong.
