    Buy the Mavic Pro here to support my channel: amzn.to/34FSl0d
    In December of 2017, it was signed into law that recreational flyers in the US must register with the FAA if their drone is over .55lbs. Go to registermyuas.faa.gov for more info!
    Happy flying!

    Nothing's better than the experiences of someone who is a 'veteran'. The practical tips which come from actually using a product regularly over time, I think, are more valuable.

      SpeedStackin Aiden - question for you from the Uk.
      I plan to use my Mavic Pro for Search and rescue which means taking off in the valley bottom and flying up to 1000m height 2 miles away to the mountain summit. If I set my RTH to 30m, when it is at the top of the mountain at say 1050m height and I press RTH, what happens ? Does it try to descend to 30m immediately and return home thereby hitting the deck or does it fly back to me at 1050 m then drop down - or does it fly back but keep its self at least 30m above ground level as it returns.?

      No, maybe u have figured it out.
      it will not decent
      instead it will fly 30 m above your starting altitude when RTH.

    Raleigh, NC!!!! My hometown!!! Man, ya gotta love the internet... here I am at 3am, a Raleigh-boy who is living in Germany, and after buying a Mavic Pro last week I'm snooping around UA-cam for some tips -- and here YOU are! I actually just used my Mavic Pro for a video shoot over the weekend inside Germany's first Ninja Warrior style training facility. I gotta say this thing is sooooo much fun to fly (even indoors... with crazy obsticles & people)!!!! If you're on the fence about buying this drone, just top listening to your wife and BUY IT NOW... you won't regret it! It's really great to see your shots of downtown Raleigh and Falls Lake... makes me miss home like crazy! SUBBED (and I hope I don't have any typos, haha)

    Basically my only change after getting the Mavic Pro is that I now use a full sized cable when connecting the phone to the drone. I got tired of fooling with the little tiny cables and I kept getting disconnects. So I just plug the USB cord into my phone and plug the full sized usb connector to the bottom of the controller. Not as "compact" as with the smaller cables, but its easier for me to use and has caused less issues.

    • @pnv8477
      @pnv8477 6 років тому

      you have to disconnect the first small cable you were originally using! only one plug should be plugged in (the one you want to use!)

      Yeah, I finally figured this out last weekend. Thanks for clarifying that that is what it was though. It was getting frustrating. I left my short cord home and as a last resort tried it again, and it worked! So glad I figured this out.

      I have an old RAM mount for my Ipad. I found a way to hook it to an old cell phone so I can mount the controller on the old phone. I also use the full sized USB on the bottom of the controller. (BTW, a RAM mount is a mount pilots use to secure the device in an airplane)

    You were the first video that I viewed after unboxing my Mavic Pro. Your easy going non-technical demeanor enables your viewers easily to understand and enjoy your presentation. The editing style of each segment adds an entertainment factor and supports retention of your posted videos. (FYI: I am a TV video producer and director myself)
    After over a year of flying, I do have some suggestions/thoughts regarding the above presentation. If you are already aware of all of my comments (Now 10 months after the above "10 Months with the Mavic pro..." was posted, perhaps another subscriber would find one or two informative.
    First, I went from the difficult plastic gimbal travel holder to a ONE-piece cover. It has a built-in slot to hold the camera and easily mounts on the gimbal. Far better than stock You mentioned when setting the exp (etc) sensitivity settings (.25-.20 - .25) that you somehow got the setting to move without entering it- (one went to .90)) I found if I click and hold on the vertical line in the visual sensitivity display above each setting and slide the mouse up or down, it changes the values quickly with no typing and entering each one.
    I own the multi-charger you have and read a lot about it and have found it to be both reliable and safe.
    There are now anti-glare hoods for the camera that NO longer appear in any shot and do a nice job of sun glare reduction and protects the camera in certain limited situations. Finally, the ultimate sun shade accessory is available for the iPhone 6- 7-8 plus It is from Hoodman: They have a two-piece system that has 4 walls that work in most situations or you can buy the extended hood that quickly attaches (flips up when needed) to the lower Sun Shade that adds another 6-8 inches and has a curved place on top designed to place your head/eyes. This blocks ALL the sun and makes it possible to see details in your shots on the small iPhone screen that would be missed if you did not use it. Both shades fold flat and take up little room in a backpack or Carry bag.

    I just got my Part 107, and everything ready to start flying as a company/business. I am glad I looked at your channel as I was thinking about getting some of the things you mentioned not to get. I would recommend looking at the fold-able landing pad they offer. it makes the return home and landing way better as well as negates the problems with long grass or other things that may be in the way. I have a set of the new guards and I find they very nice. instead of 4 it is just 2. Which saved me recently when I had a run in with a goose and ended up in some tree branches. I will be going through your other Mavik Pro videos.

    I to have gone back to the basic "LESS IS MORE" standard. My extended landing gear caused auto land issues. My skinz made it run to hot. Sunshade for camera is worthless and my 5.5" phone is to convenient to give up. Less gear is far better in several different ways. My favorite gear for it is tbe freewell case i won from you. Ive used it since the day your delivery got here. Great video as always!!

    Thanks Ed! Only had my Mavic for 3 weeks and I'm really enjoying it, your set up info is really helpful, there are a lot of settings when you first get this drone to get your head around, just one point I should add is that I use a Samsung S6 phone on mine and it works perfectly well, I have not had any issues at all, thanks again for all your tips and keep the videos coming.

    Really great video, thanks for putting so much work and effort into these videos! I want to inform anyone reading this that the Mavic works VERY well for android phones as well! And not just expensive ones. I have a Huawei Mate SE, which is 220$ (yes, 1/8th the price of most flagship phones!), and it works with the DJI app flawlessly. I've never had any issue, and I think it's important for people to not be deterred by the "made for iPhone" signage on the Mavic's box. Despite being a thin phone, I certainly can't fit it in the controller with its case on, but with no case it fits very well, and DJI's micro-usb cable is put to good use here. I just want people to know this! Because sometimes the android version of ios apps can receive less technical support for bugs, but this is not the case here.

    The beauty of the Mavic Pro is the portability and anything you do to defeat that is counterproductive. That is why I didn't jump in with your earlier recommendation for the larger Mavic Carrying Case or even the use of a tablet. It's just more to carry that won't fit in the DJI Mavic Carrying Case. A six inch smartphone is perfect as is the DJI Mavic Carrying Case. And all of that fits in the DJI case. And I also purchased the Chinese Leagoo T10 Smartphone to use as a dedicated display only phone (no service) for just flying.

    I just got into flying and went with the Mavic pro. One useful thing I noticed was being able to use a micro SD card larger than a 64GB one. I use a SanDisk Extreme 128GB card that I use for my gopro and decided to stick it in the Mavic and it works fine. Plus it gives you more video time as well. Has anyone else tried to use a SD card larger than 64gb? I'm curious if other peoples Mavic will accept a SD card of that size?I like your channel. Keep it up and flying high...

  • @johndoyle4723
    @johndoyle4723 7 років тому

    Yes, the lens sun shield never comes out to play any more nor the bracket to hold the tablet, and the clip for the lanyard just allows the lanyard to obscure the tablet. We are all suckers for accessories.
    I use an Ipad mini4 and that in the unaltered controller with a short USB cable and angled lightning connector is, for me, the best combo.
    The 64gb san extreme card is a must, my cheaper one is also in the bin.
    Still got, and use my cheapo ND filters, they work well, but a pain to fit, and often fail the start up test.
    Thanks good video, and clearly the content has been gained practically.

    Just a suggestion, if you do not have the guards for your controller arms take the drone out of the bag and then put your controller in, move the divider over and slide your drone in place, and when you need your controller pull the drone out, move the divider over and then take your controller out it seems to help a lot

    Thanks for all your videos Ed. I have had my Mavic for a year now and have come to all the same conclusions you have. I've tried all the after market products. The one I always use is the control stick lock. I was lucky and had a 7+ with a slim case from day one - it fits and works perfectly and I absolutely love it. I tried to use my mini IPad, but just too much hassle and no real improvement. I've come to love the DJI case. At first it seemed way too small, but I'm able to pack the Mavic (nose down on the RH side) and controller, 2 spare batteries (in the front zipper pocket), spare props next to the controller, lens wipes, FAA, AMA and R/C club cards in the top internal zipper pocket, and spare SD cards in the external front zipper pocket. I keep my Polar Pro filters in the left external pocket for easy access, and have NOTHING in the right pocket. I guess I could put some food and water in there..... The only other accessory I use, if possible, is the H landing pad (orange side up). It allows pinpoint RTH landings most of the time. I've learned to always keep my thumb over the pause button on any auto landing though! So many variables in each situation you never know what can happen, and the beauty of the Mavic is you can just stop it mid flight and sort out what's going on.

  • @LawtonDigital
    @LawtonDigital 7 років тому

    Hi Ed, I've been flying my Mavic for six months now, and I've come to the same conclusions you have regarding the accessories you've mentioned. I did create a foam molded holder for my remote so it fits snugly in the bag and provides extra cushion.
    I've also documented the problem with the low sun angle and forward sensors. Sometimes disabling the sensors mid-flight, especially when you're battery is running low, and your Mavic is hanging out over a lake (true story), just isn't the easiest option. In those cases, I just spin the drone 180 degrees (or Pi radians if you're into that) and fly backwards. It's a quick fix to a sticky situation.
    One other quick tip. The printing on the ND filters is really small. To make my life easier, I used a Sharpie and printed the filter number on the plastic case above each filter. No more squinting.
    A separate note: I cracked the glass on my camera during a crash. Instead of spending the $79 on my crash protection plan, I spent $20 and bought a new camera. It took two weeks to arrive and six screws to install. I felt more confident doing that than wondering whose drone I'd get back after sending mine in. I'll save the crash protection for when I can't fix it myself.

    Rick, I think most of us dronies watch a lot of You Tube videos on drones, but honestly, your one of my favorites. I don't want to get too gushy here, but to me, your a real natural at this, or at least you sure appear to be. You're always professional, but you have such a relaxed demeanor. Maybe that's just more my style, but you do a great job on these presentations. Also, your a very smooth, clean shooter. It's funny how with video, so many times, less is more. In other words, nice slow pans and zooms, unless your doing a car commercial, are almost always better. Thanks for sharing your latest thoughts on the Pro and keep up the good work. Marc-Mavhawk.

    Thank you Ed for your follow up on the Mavic Pro. I have followed your channel ever since I got my own Mavic Pro about two years ago, and I appreciate your channel a lot. I’m also happy with my drone, and regarding the gimbal clamp, I had to drill a tiny hole in it and attach a fishing line in it. In the other end I attached a red textile which reminds me to always remove the clamp before powering up the Mavic. Without it I would have ruined the gimbal motors for sure 😆. Again, thank you for a very helpful and entertaining channel! Best regards from Sweden 🇸🇪

I too tired quickly of the iPad..the processor speed, compactness and handiness of the iPhone 7+ is all I use now. I fly without a phone case. I am not a professional so I take minor issue with your -1 sharpness setting. I used -1 unquestioningly for months until I saw a vid by DRONER recommending +1 sharpness and never looked back. Hi, I just got my Mavic Pro yesterday. Great video, you do a wonderful job separating the wheat from the chaff, Ed. It is really cold here, single digits at night and stays below freezing during the day. So, I'm using the time to read all the documentation and become familiar with my new drone. I have many questions but the one that I'm struggling with right now is about the gimbal cover. Can it be used when flying? I'm thinking it might provide some protection if there is a mishap. The gimbal is so delicate I'm concerned that it could be easily damaged or knocked out of alignment. Thanks again Ed. I am going to watch your other posts soon.

    GREAT info, Ed!! I'm not a fan of the lower FPS, but I agree with your comments on 60 FPS having issues. Most of your footage is a bit choppy, but toward the end of this video of the boat in the river, it was perfect. Was that shot at 60 FPS? If not, why is it so smooth compared to your other footage?

    Ed, Good video. I bought about every accessory possible for the mavic and don’t use hardly any of them. I do use the gimbal clamp cover combo you can buy and it really is nice just to have one piece that does 2 jobs. I recently sold my mavic to my work when I bought the inspire 2 but I still get to fly it for taking pics and vids of engineering project we do and it is a dream to fly. I do bump my exp settings down a little more than you do on the craft and the gimbal but I think that is just personal taste. BTW if you get a chance to pick up an Inspire 2 you will never look back. :)

    Great update! I enjoyed it. I may have to look into a thin case for my iPhone 7 +, but it might be hard to downsize from the iPad Mini 4. Lately, I've been playing around with the CrystalSky 7.85, which is great because you don't need a "PadHat" in bright sun. :)

    Hello from Raleigh. Nice tips and footage from Dorthea Dix. I haven't heard anything about the forum you mentioned. I have flown several times downtown, usually at dawn on a Sunday morning when it is a ghost town. There are several good spots if interested.

    Thanks for some of the reminders, Ed. No matter how long we fly sometimes we forget some of the basics. I would like to hear you comment a bit on something that has been affecting me a lot lately: No Signal. I'm flying my Mavic with an Android Tab 8 and the USB cable plugged into the bottom of the RC. I'm not using any signal boosting aids on the antennas, but it seems more common than not lately that I have flights where there's no signal back to the screen. Have you been seeing this at all and what might be some of the reasons and solutions? Thanks!

    At 2:17 you talk about using your sun hood. Have you had any signal issues with the hood attached? Seems to go against all logic to cover the antennas. Lots of talk about upgrades being made to the DJI Mavic antennas such as Signal Range Booster and Long Range Antenna Upgrade. Whats your thoughts on this?

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  7 років тому

      Hey! Never had an issue for signal loss...to my understanding, antennae lose their signal when covered by metal or are touching conducting material. The rubber/leather/whatever that the DJI Sunshade Hood is made of shouldn't be much of an issue. Plus I'm not one to fly the Mavic as far as it will go...I usually stay close to the controller and walk to new areas that I want to fly in rather than pushing the limits of the signal reception.
      Good luck!

    at 4:56 it looks like you have obstacle avoidance off, is that on purpose? I actually have been turning it off myself lately, because I usually get way more false alarms (sun, reflections, etc seem to trigger it), and generally I'm careful enough flying LOS that I won't hit something...

    Mr Ed Ricker...I have a question... in another video...you had stated you kept your (ISO) to the lowest setting. Yes I see it at 800 in this vid, 7:36 mark. Just curious if you have tried something new in the cam quality of settings.... Total noob here, have yet to even unbox my Mavic Pro. Answer if u can. Thanks , love the vids learning a lot.

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  6 років тому

      Hi Denis,
      I keep my ISO at the lowest POSSIBLE setting. The lowest ISO setting on the Mavic would be too dark indoors so I did bump it up to have a relatively well exposed indoor image. There shouldn't really be any reason to have such a high ISO outdoors during the day. To brighten the image, ISO is the last thing to adjust after shutter speed and any darkening filters have been addressed.

    My Mavic’s in the mail. A few questions I haven’t seen addressed.
    1) is GPS necessary for stability?
    2) I’m going to be flying under trees. I’m afraid to use RTH if it will rocket it into branches if signal is lost. Can I turn it off, or have it default to auto land instead?
    3) keep hearing to retain LOS at all times, but given its range I’d like to explore a bit, this will have me lose sight. Is this unwise?
    4) there’s no FAA registration anymore? I’ve not seen this mentioned anywhere.

    • @ChrisMitchellClare

      I prefer the original, because then you can use the gimble protector to hold the gimble still when your fitting the ND Filters, especially the DJI ones, I don't want it moving about loose when attaching them as I keep feeling it will do damage, so I just stick with the originals, much better.

    • @ChrisMitchellClare

    • @EdEditz
      @EdEditz 7 років тому

      Yes I totally agree with you Chris. I did order the all in one gimbal/lenscover thingy but I came to the same conclusion you stated in your comment reply. The original one holds the camera completely locked which is what you need when you install ND filters and I also just like the thought that it can't move in transport. So I too went back to using the original gimbal clamp.

      That's the thing usually DJI thinks of everything they knew that you need something to support the gimbal when putting the filters on!!! that was not a mistake!!! they did that on purpose..

    Thank you Ed, and I pretty much agree with you with all being said. I will try to film with digital sharpness on -1 as I have experienced the same issues with grass and trees look horrible. Also I keep struggling with panning motions, where the footage end up looking jerky and not smooth. I can't find a good way to fix it. I did a lot experimenting with slowing down the shutter speed, but still when the video play back it looks like it skips frames. Video test have been made in 4k, 2.7K and 1080p, 60fps all set to manual. Could this be related to the SD card not being fast enough?
