The US Army developed the AH-56 Cheyenne due to frustration with the US Air Force's lack of dedicated close-air support aircraft during the Vietnam War. At the time the USAF had many supersonic fighters and old Korean War-era propeller-driven attack aircraft, but neither were good for advanced/modern close-air support aircraft. Then the US Air Force said the US Army's AH-56 project was violating the 1948 Key West Agreement and taking over the close-air support role which was supposed to be the USAF's responsibility. The fact that the new attack helicopter was high-speed, included wings and pusher-propeller likely made them fear it would eventually lead to a fixed-wing Army attack aircraft in the future. The development of the AH-56 concerned the USAF and forced them to develop the A-10 Warthog. When the AH-56 was cancelled, the Air Force was now forced to continue with production of the A-10, otherwise the Army would develop another CAS aircraft on their own instead again. In the end, there were still gaps and the Army developed the AH-64 Apache, though it was slower and simpler than the AH-56.
By the way both the Cheyenne and the Cobra were developed at the same time with the Cobra actually getting the contract as the Army's first attack helicopter.
