The Collection: Dweezil Zappa

- In this episode of “The Collection,” host Mark Agnesi travels to Los Angeles, CA, to check out the incredible guitar collection of Dweezil Zappa. Growing up the son of musical icon Frank Zappa, Dweezil began playing guitar as a young child, and by age 12, had released his first single. Dweezil has performed as a solo artist, as well as recreating his father’s music with the project Zappa Plays Zappa. Over his career, Dweezil has amassed a massive collection of odd and obscure guitars, including many of his father’s original instruments, fretless and half-fretted guitars, a microtonal guitar, and a Kramer guitar given to him by Eddie Van Halen during a soundcheck at his middle school talent show. His love of modifying guitars and his quest for new sounds makes Dweezil’s collection anything but ordinary.

Dweezil is a phenom player, but three things I love about him. 1. He has is dad's brilliant understanding of music and tech. 2. Always looking for a different "thing" 3. He is super cool, every time when he is done playing, he always hands the guitar to Mark to try it out. A real musician!
Real stand up guy
Hard to not like him
Talented too
I love that he goes "here, try it"! He knows Mark isn't gonna do anything worse to the guitar than he has already done.
Interesting you note how he hands Mark all his guitars, I noticed that too. I happened to watch this after the Bonamassa episode and Joe was definitely not interested in having anyone touch his gems so the contrast was immediately noticable.
Totally second that. Plus, his "Confessions" album is amazing
I like that Gibson allows the word "Fender" to be used in their videos.
And Ibanez and Kramer
They produce Kramer
Yeah Apple would never do that. ha.
Just what I think when I watch the video's of Gibson TV! It's the love for the guitar that unites all the brands and it's awesome that Gibson expresses that ❤️
just think, america used to have free speech
Grateful that Dweezil is so knowledgeable about all his dad’s gear and appreciate him sharing such personal moments.
Always love these things. Guys like Dweezil don't have to do this stuff. It's just super cool.
He seems like such an at peace person. So calm, cool and collected.
Exactly what this day needed!
Robert Baker- You need to rock a micro-tonal guitar.
You are correct sir!
Or any other day, actually.
Watching this after two hours of shoveling snow on a Sunday morning.....this was needed indeed...
Hehehe : -D
I've met Dweezil twice in my life, both times after ZPZ gigs, and both times he took the time to sign records, hand out picks, and listen to me prattle on about how I saw him play on stage with his dad at the Wembley Arena in '88!
Just a real cool dude, and a helluva guitar player!
Did not get to visit with him but on 09/11/14 he and the band walked in front of my car while waiting to enter the parking garage at the Aloft Hotel near the Orange Peel where they played that night. You can see video of that show if you go to my channel. ua-cam.com/channels/Y0m4w9AEyml7cuIYHVQ1bA.html
He comes off as *genuinely* cool here. Super fuckin cool. Glad you got to meet him and had a positive experience
When he came to Tucson, (2015) he invited guitar players to participate in a “class”.... and he was genuinely down to earth with sharing his artistry on the guitar! An incredible person/musician!
Best gig I ever saw id have to say. Listening to that music live is way better than the records. The musicianship was right in your face and blew my mind.
Yes! His family is pretty much a disaster (mom was actually insane) but the kid is cool.
Dweezil really is a down to earth guy. Love the tales of Eddie mentoring him, and the compassion Ed showed. You can see Ed really had an impact on him, and he still gets emotional over it.
I could have watched another hour of this particular visit with Dweez.
Brilliant obscure instruments.
R.I.P. Frank and Eddie 🎸
It has been a perfect playing for me having a lovely and awesome Fan like you, thanks for your love, I have you mostly to be thankful for 🎼🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🌹🌹
Dweezil just comes across as a great guy in this. Handing Mark every guitar and just full of stories
Everything I ever see of Dweezil he comes across as such a decent sincere person, emotional and honest. What a dude!
Guitars and stories are meant to be shared. Sitting in the closet they die on the vine.
God dweezil is intense guy with some great stories n designs, hope he is Ok ,: 0
It has been a perfect playing for me having a lovely and awesome Fan like you, thanks for your love, I have you mostly to be thankful for 🎼🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🌹🌹🌹
This was awesome.
You’re pretty damned cool yourself!
Roasting reverb so far sexy beards?
WE LOVE THE FLUFF!
Can c Frank was always looking for new sounds n tones ,: 0
I love your channel I love the stuff you do. You have taught me a lot through your channel and I am grateful thanks man.
I love the fact that this is a Gibson channel, but we get to see other brands as well. Love Gibson, for sure...but I really appreciate seeing other brands these great artists use, and why they use them. I give a lot of credit to Gibson for letting this happen. Thanks for being so open minded and letting the artists share everything.
Yes, I thought the same.
Yep - major respect.
Very well said. Agreed fully
@@BootsORiley What is happening with this world? So soft!! Yes, I jump all over these comments and I'm truly sorry for it, but man, this is the sound of a controlled society! As in, 'oh, gosh, thank you to a major corporation for allowing us little people to see a LITTLE bit of the world beyond their walls!
Guys - if it were a tour of Gibson, and their brands, then yes, all Gibson! But this is a tour of DWEEZIL ZAPPA'S collection. It better dam* well include everything brand in Dweezil's collection or it is inauthentic! It is fake news!
C'mon people, stop allowing yourselves to be so easily controlled and manipulated.
Musicians especially! What happened to the free spirit, 'buck the system', not being a sellout, rejecting the control by a multi-national corporation?
So Gibson does not deserve special praise for doing what they already should be doing.
I have owned around 18 Gibson and Gibson brand guitars. I bought 6 since 9/21, with a 7th arriving today. Had a new Fender Pro II Strat arrive two days ago, along with a new Tele and Ibanez a month ago. I love all good brands.
we get to see the other brands because gibson is suing the other companies for there shapes because gibson is all about money
Love that Dweezil keeps his fathers work alive. Hope to see him perform live again soon!
Finally some love for Dweezil
He deserves all of it and more.
Yeah he’s a legit virtuoso
Seen him live 3 times. I'll continue to see him when he comes through my town. Truly amazing, every time.
Those SG guitars were awesome too! He is an amazing player!!
@@likwidflamegoing to see him this year I’m so pumped
You know you've made it when Eddie Van Halen is your roadie for a school talent show.
It’s exactly the sort of thing Eddie would have done, but that doesn’t make it any less amazing.
Dweezil, your humanity shines through. Thank you.
Dweezil is just a guy you can't not like. Regardless of who he is related to he's an interesting and honestly interested person. God bless him.
He's a priveleged weirdo
@@classicartfoundation639 Yes, he should have been 'normal' like everyone else and not try to be unique in any way.
Also, so privileged that he chose guitar music instead of movies and pop or something more commercial.
Absolutely, guy is not pretentious or atleast not much.
Unless you're his mom.
@@classicartfoundation639 Please dont poop here, and always pick it up. Did you know that when you point your finger at someone, three fingers point back to you!
I went to school with Dweezil and Moon. I remember Frank would pick them up in the car. We had Friday night music events.
Holy shit when he started to tear up over Eddie calling him.
Eddie was a whole nother..Dimension of Guitar since Hendrix ( Eddie admitted 20yrs after not acknowledging a Heavy influence) outta 4 VH Shows 1 Eddie transcended..the other Van Hagar..Solid Sammy's vocals are in the absolute top of the Art Rock vocalist...R.Plant..planted as the Ultimate...Hendrix enchanting mystical down dirty cosmic blues..Guitar and vocals...Now I digress but Frank and Dweezil have had the best vocalists that can do anything...that SG is almost good enough to sell your...?? ..
Yeah, Dweezil is for real.
He's got great stories about Eddie and just hanging out with him. It's fun to listen to Eddie just being a buddie and not the Rock Star you'd think.
time cue??
46:20 keept on listening to it to be sure!! there ya go those who don't have the time
I know its impossible to get him out of character, but a buckethead episode would be badass.
@@BravoSeven it would be nice to see him out of character in a musical setting. He's got a major heart condition and may not be around for much longer. If you heard his out of character interview with his therapist, it was great to hear his human side after decades of his Buckethead persona.
Dweezil seems like a genuinely nice and humble person.
A lot of celebrities kids are just HANDED celebrity, this guy actually did the WORK. I've followed him through the years, and he is an INCREDIBLE guitarist and musician. He's done so much AMAZING music. BRAVO, DWEEZIL. You gotta know that Frank couldn't be prouder. And those guitars...WOW.
@Cire Rednulk Never hear ANYONE say ANYTHING negative about the guy. I think he is one of the few GENUINE celebs out there. Why family members would not want him carrying on his fathers legacy is beyond me. Most guitar players couldn't even PLAY that music, much less bring it back to life the way that Dweezil has. Great guy, great guitarist, great musician, all around. Like I said before, you gotta know how PROUD Frank would be of his son. COOL that you met him, too.
@Cire Rednulk the last concert I saw was Dweezil Hot Rats last March. The next day covid hit hard and we all locked down. I got to meet him and get an autograph as well. He is the coolest guy.
DZ on MTV video playing guitar
@@Jeff_____ Hot Rats would have been a great show. How was the violin player?
@@fintanoclery2698 there wasn't one. Dweezil played some of the violin melodies on the guitar.
Didn’t think I’d enjoy that as much as I did. He really seems like a genuinely nice dude.
Mark deserves a lot of credit for his consummate guitar knowledge inspiring detailed responses and enthusiasm from the guests. Took me watching a few of these to appreciate Mark’s contribution since he always lets his guests shine.
Mark Greasy is a complete dirtbag. He needs to take a shower. Ever see the vid where he threatens to sue everyone? He was Gibson's mouthpiece, but he kept saying "we."
Mark is a bottomless reservoir of guitar knowledge. His guitar reviews from his manager days at Norman's are everything.
Dweezil is one of the coolest dudes on the planet. He always comes across confident but humble and was kind to me the one interaction I had with him . And he is a MONSTER player.
Dweez is such a great dude. His recent series on Van Halen is pretty great too. The intro of the series is a completely acapella version of Running With the Devil 😂 It’s amazing and hilarious at the same time.
Yes agreed, that’s a great podcast
If you wouldn’t mind linking it, I’d love to hear
It looks like Dweezil gets some hate; didn't know that.
I find all his interviews very interesting because he talks about music, life, inspiration and what it all feels like.
And all of that in a coherent and articulate manner.
He's a great guy IMHO. Just hanging out and actually talking about things like a friend would.
@@phihelix8777 Yeah, absolutely. This is something you typically find in artists that have some depth..
They don't care about the persona as much. I remember the Rig Rundown from John McLaughlin having a similar vibe iirc.
@@phihelix8777 And when he got emotional recalling the passing of his dad and Eddie reaching out to him.
Definitely an artist for kids to look up to.. on how to be honest and real.
The douche nozzle is the host who doesnt even know microtonal, cmon everybody that matter have heard Lizard Gizzard boys

If this was 3 hours long, I'd still be watching til the end, Great Stuff!
Fantastic listening to a guy who is so open and down to earth. some of these guys the interviewer has to pry the interview out of them. Dweezil is just hanging out sharing everything.
how cool is it that EVH came to his talent show I MEAN THATS CRAZY COOL
Steve Vai gave Dweezil guitar lessons.
Imagine how proud his father would be of his playing, not only did he capture his father's feel but too be such an all around well-rounded guy. I know his dad's happy
Bless you Dweezil. Such understated skill, talent and humanity in a compassionate and generous man. He worked so hard learning his dad's difficult music with utmost accuracy to share with us live again and introduce to new listeners. Zappa Plays Zappa in Santa Rosa CA was like Frank and the Mothers reincarnated but with better live production. Two of my favorite online highlights are Watermelon in Easter Hay (London 2013) and Inca Roads (Complete) from the ZPZ dvd, also on UA-cam. The faithfulness to (and dare I say possible improvement on) the originals is awesome.
On a less upbeat note, there is Dweezil's interview on Mark Maron's WTF podcast, #718, where he emotionally describes the shameful treatment he received by his own mother and brother dealing with the estate after Frank's death. Even Maron was in tears.
That fretless SG with the sustainiac really blew my.mind. this guy is an inspiration and a genius like his father
Dweezil- "I said hey, can we stick some frets in between the frets?"
Kuni Sugai- "Why???"
Dweezil- "Sometimes...sometimes that's really just the reason to do it, just because."
Just because. Brilliant. 18:23
King Gizzard: Flying Microtonal Banana!
He's listening to some aussie desert rock for sure
It has been a perfect playing for me having a lovely and awesome Fan like you, thanks for your love, I have you mostly to be thankful for 🎼🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🌹🌹🌹
Love the emotional connection to Eddie VH and the way he told it. Being friends beyond music is a gift.
I'll never understand the Zappa Family Trust stuff. Let Dweezil do his thing and give him everything he needs-he's out there doing the work to carry on the legacy!
From what I understand, they have made up and worked out all the legal issues. Hopefully they can go back to being a family and Dweezil can keep on playing.
Ahmet and Diva can't survive without The Trust, and Gail put them in charge. They're like welfare cases using the little power they have over the breadwinner.
Not to mention Frank told Dweezil he could have his guitars
Genius like his father
Fantastic that he can keep his father’s legacy alive
I agree with you, but on top of his father’s legacy, I think Dweezil is starting to create his own legacy!
Cannot wait to watch the new Zappa film.
What a great guy man
I could watch Dweezil all day, he is an amazing guitarist, with great humility and both a student and a teacher of guitar related life
That is a real collection of guitar tools! Not just a vault full of unobtainable 59 bursts and pre war Martins, but instruments he has a long personal relationship with. Some are still a work in progress;,Fantastic!🎸
Thanks for this Mr. Z!
Well done Mark! (Met you at Norms years ago)
He says he does not have much of his Dad's equipment, and mentions once being able to listen to master tapes of his Dad's music. All due to his little brother and sister taking the Zappa Trust hostage. Dweezils work is not even on his father's website, as it used to be. "The Trust" sold the family home and left FZs soundboard in the studio.
Sick little bastards. Sad.
GaGa of all people bought Frank's house. I believe Ahmet sold a few guitars before Dweezil could choose his inheritance.
Man. Gail really messed up the way the trust was split. Such a shame. Dweezil is so talented and humble.
@@kikaizuki I think deep down Gail hated Frank's open relationships with other women and took it out on his kids and legacy.
Greed and money corrupts! Dweez stayed true to the Music and his Pops legacy.
Dweezil speaks like Steve-O and looks like a CEO
Nailed it 🎯
WOW. Dweezil's guitar collection is off the charts cool! I love the fact that most of the guitars are heavily modded and totally quirky!
Dweezil seems like such a good guy. Great to see him and his collection.
Saw the ZPZ show in Merriville , Indiana when the Star Theatre was still standing and there were zero disappointments. They started with “Montana” and it just kept getting better. Don’t know if he still does this, but that night he stayed until the last autograph was given. I got to shake his hand and thank him for making his father’s work his work now and how much Frank inspired my musical choices. Everyone around me started clapping and agreeing and he looked genuinely moved.
Wish I had a legacy like that to leave to MY son, lol.
Tommy, I have heard this said of Dweezil many times.
He seems to have a huge and very soft heart.
I'm now going to say something that may have inaccuracies, but this thought has crossed my mind.
By appearances Frank was not a man that related well with people on a "everyday level."
He (I want to avoid making concrete statements) seemed so focused, and so serious. To me I believe Frank had some type of anger at his core. I am not judging that or presenting it as "a bad quality."
I wonder if Frank ever laughed at himself?
Again I want to acknowledge I don't know if my next statement is true let alone appropriate.
With Dweezil playing Frank's Music, and being so willing to mix with the public.
Here goes, Dweezil's interaction says "my father & I are so grateful for your interest in his/our work. He (my dad) was so committed to working, he really wanted to thank you all but believed you would understand. This is very humbling, thank you."
I had a father that was not there, when he showed up at the age of 11, (my age at the time) his life was committed to helping others.
I couldn't appreciate this until later in life. Parenting is a huge responsibility, the commandment "honor your father and mother" is not a conditional request.
Many a child cherish the ability to hate their parents or parent.
It is easy to love someone who in our eyes does everything WE want.
Forgive me for droning on.
Greetings from Colorado Springs Colorado. Christopher
Dweezil is the son of one of the greatest musical Geniuses of all time, a great musician himself and a fantastic guitarist, but above all is the most humble and down to earthed guy. Every time he’s so nice to everyone and so relaxing to listen. He loves EVH, he cryes EVERY single time he remembers Eddie’s call when Frank did pass away. The Gibson tv was and is a fantastic move from Gibson, don’t know if a Mark’s idea but for sure great work, great contents and a very friendly format. Bravi! Ciao dall’Italia!!! Vittorio
Like Dweezil and this just shows how much he loves to play his dad’s music and mix his own style in with it too. He’s got some crazy ass guitars to say the least. Good episode Mark !
I LOVE DWEEZIL ... HE'S A REALLY GOOD HUMAN UNIT
This was fantastic! Long live the dweez! What a guy.. his dad can be proud and rest easy knowing that his legacy is well and truly safe and taken care of! Thanks for this .. great viewing!🤘
Great interview and guitar tour. Dweezil is a mad scientist.
Dweezil has some really interesting guitars and ideas. Just the kind of interview I needed to brighten up my day and open up my mind to new points of view. Thanks to Mark and Gibson for doing these great videos!
I’m terribly sorry for the loss of your good friend Edward Deeezil, it was touching to watch your emotion for Ed, we all lost our hero. Eddie left a mark like no other. His life was a success to the highest order. He will forever be known on planet earth for as long as planet earth exists. God bless him, can’t wait to see that smile in Gods house. #EVH Forever 🎸 🎶🎶🎶
Complete obsession with the instrument I've underestimated this guy, Thank You Gibson.
That zappa tone was epic
This was a great voyage through Dweezil’s, and Frank’s weird and wonderful collection! Great job, and thanks to Dweezil for being such a sharing person. I loved how he would just hand over these precious creations, and pieces of history.
This series has to be my favorite thing on UA-cam, I cant get enough!
Somebody needs to introduce Dweezil to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Those guys are microtonal masters.
Also, reissue the Barney Kessel guitars in black!
For real. He’s already got his own banana!!
incredible band my favorite post y2k band of all time .
Hahahaha
He knows the gizz man...of course he does
He actually described FMB
love this series, whilst i love seeing the vintage rarities like the bursts, its super interesting to see someone who takes a different approach to their collection...great job gibson & mark!
So Awesome for Dweezil to take the time to play these guitars a little bit and share his passion with us! Best 'The Collection' episode so far! Being a torch-bearer of such a legacy is an awesome responsibility, and he is notably capable of that as well.
Dweezil not only a brilliant musician but just a quality human being
I had no idea that people gave him so much hate
Awesome. His dad is smiling. I just love this series. Thanks, Gibson.
Love seeing mark absolutely confused at some of these strange guitars, great episode
What a fantastic hour of guitar talk! He's so eloquent. Could listen to a part 2 and part 3!
Holy cow Dweezil Zappa has some pretty and unique guitars.
This was by far my favorite episode of the collection. I’ve met Dweezil a few times back in the 90’s when he was on a club tour with his brother. Loved all the different mods that his dad did over those years, especially since we got to hear them. Definitely some unique sounds and tones. Good stuff.
Loved every minute of it. So, glad to see that Dweezil still has the SUAPYG Les Paul. Excellent, inspiring stuff.
Deezel comes off so grounded and humble it added so much charm the groovy collection show.
I can imagine Frank looking down with pride on how wonderful a man his son grew into. ✌🏻
Great job to both Mark and Dweezil. Probably one of the best videos I have seen on you tube in a long time. I thank you both for taking the time to make this video, and to Dweezil for taking us down this musical adventure. Just F'ing Awesome!!!
Love how he let Mark play the SG!!!
Perfect timing for the reverb shop!
Coincidence??🤨
Dweezil. Thanks for all the great shows and guitar playing. Well Done!
I absolutely love these collection videos. Please keep making them. Thank you!
Love me some Zappa. So glad his music has been carried on by his boy.
By the far the craziest collection so far and Dweezil’s EVH stories are wonderful. Loved seeing his eyes light up when he talked about his dad and Eddie.
It was a joy to meet Dweezil, get a “selfie” together and shake his hand. A genuine guy. Astonishing as a guitarist, and yet so humble and unassuming. Technically brilliant but with soul, feel and humour.
This is a fantastic video!
This was a great interview of Dweezil. I'm an 80s child and I didnt get to know much about Frank's music. All I remember was seeing on record stores his different colorful album covers. I would definitely go see him live next time he comes to Miami/Fort Lauderdale area.
I've met Dweezil at several concerts and took his Master Class. He's such a great guy.
McNelly! He makes great stuff, amazing to see in Dweezil's guitar!
This was one hour and six minutes well spent. Thank you Gibson and hats off to Dweezil.
I loved this! I have enjoyed Dweezil’s albums and live performances since 1989. He has been amazing every single time. Thank you for this wonderful video.
I think this was the best episode ever. So inspiring. Thanks for his.
I lost track of how many times Mark's brain melted in this video. Holy cow.
Compelling ,this insight into "more than meets the eye "
zappa history,,those modifications alone speak volumes,
that wellspring of emotion said it all, bless you dweezil.
Dweezil was always a guitar player in my eyes starting with his songs he wrote in the 80's. He obviously could shred. When he started ZPZ his street creds increased 10-fold as guitar player in my eyes! Love his stories and love these collection Videos!
That was excellent! The texts going back and forth between friends/brothers...etc. must have all looked like “...semi-fretless????” “...partially microtonal???” Incredible collection of guitars. First class production by Gibson TV and M.A. Thank you.
Truly awesome. And the Eddie van Halen part brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful.
Hearing him talk about Eddie is awesome, you really got to know what kind of person Eddie really was. Class act.

Wow! Thank you so much for making and posting these!!
I saw Rick Nielsen's incredible collection and found my way here. I'm SO glad to see these and hear the stories, and see and hear these guitars that would otherwise be lost.
I'm especially glad to see that we don't just look at Gibson's, but all of the guitars from so many makers and places. Thank you for promoting the knowledge and love of music, and keep up the great work!

Humble, grounded, amazing disposition. Dweezil is not only a gifted guitarist but an innovator as well. Glad to see him not only continuing his dad's legacy but moving music forward and inventing as well. His Van Halen memories are touching.
Dweezel. You are one of a kind! Thank you!
Shit. Now I need to get into frank Zappa. As a Luthieir who loves to modify his instruments, this is facinating!
it is your Duty! some great FZ YT channels 👍
Chunga!
The more I learn about Zappa, he was focused on attaining a specific sound and having control of it. And it's really weird that most guitarists seem to get stuck with whatever the stock guitar is or tone chasing with name brand amps and pedals. You have no control or real understanding that way because you haven't harnessed the foundational aspects of sound and sound tech; based on word of mouth, they're just blindly wielding tools that may or may not fit their purpose--if they even have a purpose to what they're doing.
Get some FZ in your life. "You'll love It".
Something for everyone.
Joe's garage was the first album I listened to by Frank and I haven't looked back since.
Dweezil is with out a doubt a class act!
Always a pleasure to see and listen to Dweezil.
Thank you very much for showing us your amazing collection of guitars. I really enjoyed watching this!
I was surprised that the burnt Hendrix Stratocaster he brought to Norm's didn't make an appearance. I really hope he still has it, and didn't lose it in the Zappa trust mess that occured a few years back.
Pretty sure the Zappa trust got that one, which is a shame as it was a "gift" from Frank to Dweezil.
