Excerpted from Jambase article:
One of the most magical runs in the history of the jam scene took place between April 15 and 17 in 1999, when Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh teamed with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio and keyboardist Page McConnell as well as drummer John Molo and guitarist Steve Kimock for three shows at The Warfield in San Francisco.
Phil was playing his first shows back after undergoing a liver transplant and was in fine form musically. Anastasio and McConnell had reached a pinnacle of success with Phish that allowed them to embrace their connection to the Grateful Dead instead of fight it. Less than a year earlier the quartet covered “Terrapin Station” in Virginia Beach to the delight of the fanbase.
“Phil & Phriends” as the five-piece has been dubbed by fans made a statement by opening with a 34-minute “Viola Lee Blues” that set the bar high for the entire run. Lesh and his ensemble dug deep into the Grateful Dead repertoire to mix classics with songs the band hadn’t played in decades. The group also worked in a handful of Phish songs, classic rock covers and Kimock’s “It’s Up To You.”
We’d point out a few highlights, but each night is filled with such memorable moments it’s worth your time to just dive in and watch how it all went down. Thanks to videographer Ed Perlstein, author Kevin Tobin and anyone and everyone involved in finally getting these videos out there.
To whomever filmed this in 1999 - thank you from the future! This show never gets old.
honestly they deserve a nobel peace prize or something along those lines.
@@corybutler573 The Nobel prize for Music!
Completely Right On. 🤗
I still have a T-shirt from this run
Seriously, from the bottom of our hearts. These shows are incredible.
Imagine your two guitar players being Steve Kimock and Trey. Jesus.
Can I have phil on bass too? Fuck it if we are playing this game I'm going all out. Gimme...let's see...oh john molo on drums. Way underrated. Keys? Would have to be page McConnell. As good on the clav as piano as hammond's be the dudes got versatility and he can sing. That's my perfect lineup. Imagine if that actually happened
Don't have to imagine it. Here they are and I'll have it forever, but Yeah, the way they feed each other and it's their ability to truly listen to the other players. It's their total lack of the biggest spiritual block, ego, that sets them apart and above. Dancing with paradox quite nicely. Peace
Im a guitar player so that would suck lol. Unless you mean I would become Trey and Steve? Then I would want to be called Streyve Anastasiock
Imagine your three guitar players being Stevd Kimock and Trey and Jesus. Jesus.
Guardians of the Frequency
My best friend at the time was working for Phish and got to see this entire run. He said it was one of the greatest live musical experiences he’s ever had, and he saw some incredible shows in his life. I’m still jealous 25 years later 😢
This should be an official release. There’s zero doubt that the quality is beyond good enough to be fully mastered and released officially. I imagine the logistics of it will probably ever prevent that from ever happening. These guys have record company contracts where anything that is released has to be under the umbrella of who they’re with and we’ve got a few big names in this lineup. It’s fantastic that it’s here on UA-cam for us to enjoy as it was a few of the legends of all time performing at or close to their peak.
Trey being on the Fare Thee Well shows didn’t seem to be an issue like that
@@kevinp23231 They didn’t perform Phish songs during that however. They were also not allowed to perform under that Grateful Dead moniker for said contract reasons. It’s similar to Crosseyed Jams being split on official Phish releases so they don’t have to pay Sire records (or whoever owns the Talking Heads Masters).
If trey and Phil wanted to release it..they would. They probably forgot these shows even exist
Y'all poor saps... this is on file and they played phish songs during this amazing stretch. Dig deeper for the sounds
Jill would be the one to stop it.
I need to mention, that Unbroken Chain is #1.
Since no one has mentioned John Molo: he's such a good drummer!
Check out the Gov’t Mule videos on my channel. He’s smokin them skins!
Yes, he's in the pocket always.
John Molo is tied with Bill Kreutzman from '71-'74 for my all time favorite drummers.
Yes sir! and a very nice guy to boot!
I agree, he sits so low
A good night for guitar tones
Page is such an underrated master.
Been my belief for years now that Page is the glue in Phish. Fishman and Mike are the engine that pushes and Trey captains the ship. Page’s role is often very underrated but without his mastery, the bands jams just wouldn’t gel nearly as well as they do.
@@EpicNole i’ll be honest: i heard everything i needed to hear from Trey by 2000. Page’s playing is always fresh to me.
@@gmcsrbosavl6964 Page is the wizzard; fishman and gordon are the glue and co-captains; Trey is the blind genius. I think Page is very well respected and he's not shy when trying to sing that high note that he didn't rehearse. As far as underrated, Fishman is the Rodney Dangerfield of drumming.
Chairman of the boards
Phish heads stew lol..yummy
Still the best Dead cover band ever. Glad I made the trip out west for these shows!
The first 37 minutes is an epic journey of notes, a grand symphony, telling us all a story leading to the land of Bliss.
This 1999 three day run at the Warfield is still the best post Jerry shows, and probably always will be. So much talent on stage, and they rocked...
Don’t forget 11/09/ 2012.
have you ever heard of Furthur? they did some shows with Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes that were killer

As a young head, I am incredibly grateful to listen and watch this.
Phil is the Mingus of the Jam Band genre!
That’s a badass comment and totally true!!!
John molo is doing some amazing work here. Him and kimock are going absolutely wild the whole time. It's what I call zen drumming
Just discovered this. Whatta banger!
One of, perhaps, the all-time greatest run of shows.
this is wonderful stuff. my god, the talent in that room! typing through tears. im an old deadhead and i love phish and anything trey does is a must. . but my touring stopped 30 years ago. ive yet to see dead and co, but have 4 on the lawn when they get to phoenix in October. well over 200 dead shows but that was 30 years ago too. planets are lined up for me finally! gonna finally catch a real live phish show 3 days before dead and co. have been fighting a myriad of health issues and the pandemic. i, like many, were terrified that the music was stopped. if i can swing it i'll hop to L.A. and catch the Halloween show(s). this show has me twitchin , dance like nobodys lookin peace
Dead & Co. can't cook like Phil & Trey. It's a simple fact. If you actually got to see them, you'll know what I mean. I'm also a Pig Pen era Grateful Dead freak, so we should be on the same wavelength. As for this show, even Donna was good. She of course was the band member who most fans (including me) loved to hate.
@@DrMitchMedina '71--'72, Dead w/ both Pig & Keith were the sharpest, crispiest shows. Nothing against Micky but with Billy's jazz chops as lone drummer the band could turn on a dime.
Pig somehow is overlooked as a truly great and maybe the last authentic blues singer.
@@docwill184 Some of the band members, Weir in particular, felt that the double drumming got in the way. However, I'm a Mickey Hart fan through and through. I love his off-beat syncopations, and miss him when they aren't there. It is true that in the 71-72 era, Kreutzmann sometimes managed play both Billy and Mickey licks at the same time on one kit.
Always do and Im 67
Dance like no ones looking!
One of the best jam band live shows of all time. Absolute peak Trey/Phil/Kimock/Molo
Uh paidge mc ?????
I think this is the pinnacle of this music. This run is as good as it has ever been played, by anyone, ever.
This is Miles’ second great quintet, but for heads.
A group of players who are all each master musicians: as good listeners as they are players of their instruments. Their ability to convey the density of ideas that are converging at once and yet not step on each other is miraculous.
Eloquently put, but also fuck this is good
Extremely well said sir, ☮️
Miraculous?Clearly!...I more or less look at it extraordinary wizardry breaching the spirit world. Angels and devils both dance at dead shows my friend.
@@terrykenney1399 perfect!

This is probably the coolest Phil Lesh line up ever.
Steve Kimock is SOOOOOOOOO good!
he is a treasure!
Jerry said he is the best unknown guitarist
In my opinion, the best post-grateful dead live concert. All three nights, but this night is really on fire. Phil crushes it. These 5 guys had FOUR DAYS of practice together. FOUR DAYS. I really, really, really wish Steve, Trey, and Page would do more together.
I'll give this band alot of credit for doing so well in such a short span of time, yet I've found with most versions of the Grateful Dead and post-Grateful Dead that years 2 and 3 of any combo is the peak as it takes a while to develop the group consciousness within any set of musicians. With this in mind, Phil and Friends aka The Q in 2002 is the peak of post-GD accomplishments. archive.org/details/paf2002-08-31.149045.fob.schoeps.ackerman.noel.flac24/Phil%26Friends.2002-08-31.s2t01.flac
This certainly blows the Fare the Well shows out of the water.
Totally agree...by miles
@@InService77 to be fair this was 15 years earlier and all members were either in their prime or at least active. In just a year Trey as we saw him in this video was even gone.
@@InService77 I'm partial to The Other Ones from fall 2002. The Cap Center show had an incredible setlist, but the Cleveland show was even better. I was on the floor, and the energy for that St. Stephen was like nothing I'd ever experienced. And it continued sky high all the way to the end. I had a recording of that once, but I lost it. Would like to hear it again. The Furthur shows in 2010 were pretty hot as well.
This is in the top 5 best shows I've ever heard in 25 years of listening to live shows. I've been listening to this show for a year now, and it really never gets old. Great group of Friends, much love to Phil! Thanks for the post 🙏
This is an all time favorite. (And i just started listening to it 5 days ago!)

Okay, Phil singing Wish You Were Here is the single biggest happy moment I've had in a long time!
it made me very sad, music is great how it can feel so different depending on perspective.
+33:46 when franklins calms down and page hits those soft notes and the look on kimocks face is priceless. Magical moment. Best post jerry show ever.
once before going out on stage together Jerry said to Steve Kimock, "don't make me look bad, ok?"
i just recently found out kimock was on of jerrys favorite guitar players. pretty sick.
@@Dr.Flavin steve kimock is an amazing guitarist!!
Just casually listening to this show, getting a few minor things done, mostly wasting time, and then all of a sudden, I'm just blown away, shivering, mouth agape in awe and gratitude I ever got to hear this Fire on the Mountain, and that I can just go back an listen again as often as I want. What a show, all 3 of these were just magical! Thank you guys for letting us in on this even all these years later.
Kimock and Trey.....what a combo....this is what Fare Thee Well 50 should have been....pure magic....
Fer reelz !! Kimock is the man for the job
@william ballato I would imagine that captivating a stadium crowd is a learned skill, and Trey's learned it. Also, he sings.
I really enjoyed the Grateful Dead reunion shows in 2002 at alpine valley with the other ones with Jimmy Herring. They had that psychedelic twang blasting pretty hard during those shows as well.
Why the Fare The Well Hate? We were blessed that the 50th celebration even happened...
Uh yeah, they should have fired Bob Weir right before Fare Thee Well...
You can see how happy Phil is. Even he is thinking "holy shit look at this amazing crew that wanted to come play with me!" And they all fucking killed it.
these people had no idea how lucky they were
I sure did. Saw all three shows. They still stand as my fav run ever. Can’t describe it. 800+ concert vet too...

To me when Steve sits down at 1521 is the most iconic moment in history. This is the holy grail
Yessssssssssss!!!
I burned .wav files of this onto CDs and literally wore the film out on multiple rounds of discs back in college. This Franklins is so soaring, and the Scarlet Begonias contains a couple of my favorite minutes of music, ever. What a great run this was.
Same dude. The holy grail of archive back in the day. Burned it up, as they say.
Yep . I remember burning these shows off archive and they were without a doubt the most played CDs in my old CD book . I miss burning cds
Can’t believe this exists on youtube - thank you. This show’s been a go to on etree for me for years. The Help -> Slip -> Franklin’s here is the best version of the trio I’ve encountered. This “ad hoc organization” (I think that’s what Phil calls em) had something special going that night.
I couldn't agree with you more it is my favorite show of all time with some of my favorite people including my current Rock God guitarist Steve k

What a lineup. Holy smokes! Trey on the intro to Franklins is too good!
1999 was such a special year for the world of GD music. I consider this run the first press of a reset button on the whole scene after a few years of grieving and contemplation. This legendary run was a statement that the guys were ready to get serious again about their commitment to playing this music. And not just playing it, but completely reinventing the
whole approach to it. No quick run through first set standards, no predictable drums/space slot, Phil said "fuck you, here's a half hour Viola Lee Blues!" Which all led to a few years of friendly competition between Phil and Ratdog that pushed both bands to wonderful new places in clubs and theaters all across rhe country.
Then there was the Summer Sessions tour which saw Warren Haynes' first appearances, I don't think I even have to explain the magic that was peak PLQ in 2001-2003. Aside from the shows I attended, I never really listen to much of any of the bands from the post-Garcia era, but I'll still pull out Phil shows from 1999.
It was the tour that reignited the flame for me. I remember thinking "the scene is still alive!"
These shows are amazing. Worked so well. Some of my favorite shows ever. Worked so, so well. John Molo is the platform from which great things happen. Steve and Trey compliment each other perfectly. I know it's just riffs built from modes but with these two it's like they engaged in a constant deep conversation. And the differing tones and playing styles allow them to solo simultaneously and still be heard you can turn your attention from one to the other and back it try to take it all in. Lots of fun. I'm tripping
Dude Kimocks face during that Franklin's is classic. Look how many times he smiles. At one point its ear to ear. Like "dude we're doing something legendary".
Wow this is amazing. Kimock crushing it... so is every last person on the stage
This is The Goods.
I've only watched 10 minutes so far and am thoroughly impressed! Not easily impressed or inspired either. These guys are so dialed in, just channeling the music effortlessly and playing with great skill. Awesome. Going to watch (listen) more when not distracted.
@@wilson23954 check out the other two nights of this run as well. Superb from start to finish each night. Really a treat to get to watch each show all these years later.
Kimock in Franklin's 🔥
Trey in Alligator 🔥
Trey in Alligator at the peak was the best live musical moment of my life. It was finally a Phish structured style of a Dead song, more of an interpretation of the Dead rather than just a cover, and Wolfman's is Phil''s converse to that song (and I felt the Uncle John's was a nod to SCI). Mason's Children would have been solid gold but I definitely didn't walk away from that weekend thinking I was shorted anything, just saying it fits Trey's heavier side really well.
This is a TREASURE! As post-Dead Dead shows go, this is historically GREAT!
Trey and Steve trading back and forth on rhythm and lead. Mind blowing.
I was able to be at this show and it was awesome. The review in the paper went "on a scale of one to ten, this was an eleven!"
I couldn't agree more! I wasn't there but I've watched these videos numerous times by now and I just can't get enough
This is where dreams are made. Jerry, we miss you. Phil, we love you.
One of my favorite shows of any band of all time.
Every night they walk on stage, having no idea how the music will develop. What a show!
3:35 Trey turns it up. Specifically remember begging my parents to go to this. They said no. My first Phish show was that summer at Great Woods, I was 17.
My biggest regret in life was not skipping friday and monday's school days in high school and heading to Big Cypress nye 2000. Sometimes it's easier than asking for forgiveness than for permission. I wouldn't blame my kids if they end up pulling that stunt. I'll probably just let them go.
I 100% stole my dad’s credit card, bought 2 tickets off eBay for 2/20/03 (maybe a week maybe less before the show). I also bought myself a train ticket with his card. This was a school night as well. I skipped school, took the train to Chicago, and saw my first Phish show…… they never even realized I’d done that 😂 till I paid my dad back a few years later in my 20’s. Like the guy above me said? Sometimes it’s better to just GO/DO IT and ask for forgiveness later ❤ (that concert changed my life btw)
These 3 days were pretty magical.
So grateful this magicly appeared on my feed ⚡️
Me too! ⚡️
Trey: How many guitars did you bring? Steve: Yes.
I say the same thing every time I see him! Saw Steve at the Coach House in So-Cal a while back - maybe 15 guitars? Wish I could post a pic :)
🤣
3 nights of Trey staring at Kimock and looking for traditional GD jams, Kicock would just turn his back and switch guitars or turn some knobs. If Trey wanted rhythm, it only came from Page. Trey, on the other hand, set Kimock up for his solos with proper chords and rhythms. Kimock is a bitch.
