Wow, thank you! I have a background in photojournalism, but transferring those skills to video is another beast. Storytelling is the hard part. But yes, only started UA-cam in May, and Instagram in June. I have almost 6500 followers on IG now! I'm very happy with the traction I've gained.
Great video! I refer to them as Micro Adventures. As much as I'd like to cycle endlessly around the world it probably ain't gonna happen, so I get away when I can for how long I can and always have a great time. Keep the videos coming they are excellent and much appreciated!
That trip was a real departure for me. I wanted a real lazy trip... one I ride the entire thing in one day but take three just to lazily roll along and shoot video and stills. It’s just what I needed that month. Even though we all like to boast our numbers, it’s not about the miles ~ it’s about the smiles
What a fantastic few days of riding, Rob. I live in the UK but (thanks to my ex-wife) both of my children live in BC. I was over visiting them in April '19 and we spent four days on the island, staying in Sooke. Went to Port Renfrew for a day and all the while we were travelling around I just wanted to head off into the wilderness on my bike. I definitely need to plan a trip over there with my bike for a bit of exploring.
Thanks for another video, man. I lived most my life in BC and only now read up on Big Lonely Doug, somehow made me really sad. I've always thought old growth logging was a thing of the past, pretty depressing and sobering reality. It also seems like Vancouver Island has a much more developed road network through backcountry, ironically, likely because of logging too. Here, in lower mainland, most logging/fire roads are one way. But maybe it just seems that way from here.
Yes there still is some old growth and some of that has been protected, however what many people don’t know is that a almost 1/3 of Vancouver island is private logging land. Yes, private ~ not Crown Land. About 2 million acres that has its own rules for very limited public access and use. As for the amount of roads? I would say it’s comparable to the rest of BC. But less accessible due to private land management.
It’s very nice, I ride it all the time. There’s a nice little short cut. If you Google map, and look the mill bay intersection where the McDonald’s is, you’ll see Barry road turns into a trail heading north and connects with the road going to shawnigan lake. The ride into shawnigan is pleasant. Once in Shawnigan turn right to go around the north end of the last and stay on that road until you get to the rail trail.
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures Have you ridden the road that goes from the intersection of Mill Bay Rd and TCH up to Shawnigan? On one map it's labelled as a private truck rd, but on a cycling heat map it shows a far amount of usage.
Yes I have… it’s a nice road. And it’s actual name is “private truck” rd… back from back in the day. I usually take the main road just to make good time.
Did you park your vehicle at a private residence in Lake Cowichan? I'd like to ride around the lake but it would be nice to have somewhere safe to park overnight instead of biking all the way from Victoria.
Yes, I did actually. As for a safe place to park.. hmm 🤔 you could possibly check with the operator/hosts at one of the campgrounds. At least there would eyes on the vehicle.
OK Bud. There is no way you are under a year on UA-cam. Your editing, composition and eye for cool/beautiful is off the charts! ;)

Hey Rob, just wanted to say thanks for the awesome videos! Keep 'em coming!
Doing my best... a little here, a little there. Thanks for watching :). Spread the word.
Beautiful video! Love watching the adventures. It reminds me to keep finding new places to explore.
Thanks! I was hoping to remind people that sometimes the “short game” can have a better return value on the mileage.

There are so many places to see... and more remote the farther north you go. :)

Hi Rob. I’ve enjoyed watching your videos. What is your profession and do you ride in the winter as well?
I ride year round here in Victoria / I work for the town on Sidney

How is the ride from the Mill Bay ferry to the start of the Cowichan Valley Trail? Just thinking of a car-less trip over there at some point.

I thought for sure you were going to bust out the "slow-motion, shirt off, covered in soap look, when you were cleaning the bike !
LOL - I though I would spare everyone the Chris Farley SNL Chippendale flashback.
ugh it's not even winter yet and I want it to be spring already.
Hang in there - one Stat Holiday at a time should get your through it.
good taste in bear
Thanks
