  • Need A Last Minute Diy Wooden Christmas Tree Build? This One Is Perfect!
    This simple Christmas tree is extremely easy to build and has plenty of room for holiday decor and knick-knacks. If you have a miter saw, you should be able to build this in less than 20 minutes. And, that includes gluing time!
    The angles on the easy tree are 22.5 and 45 degrees. It measures roughly 30" inches tall and close to 18" wide. The wood I used on the tree build was a 1 in. x 4 in. x 12 ft. Premium Kiln-Dried Square Edge Whitewood Common Board and I could have done it with less than 10' feet of it.

    I hope that this easy, last-minute DIY Christmas tree helps anyone who hasn't made their wooden holiday decor yet. If you have any questions at all or run into issues trying to make this tree, leave them in the comments and I will do my best to respond to you right away and help you the best I can with your woodworking project.
    I used 1-1/4" brad nails and Titebond 2 wood glue. All the measurements can be found in the video. But, if you want to see a picture of the wooden tree with the details of the measurements, let me know and I can make a post for the Christmas tree itself inside the community tab.
    This will be the last tree of the year and we can move on to other amazing woodworking projects! I hope you stick around and see what we can create together! A little insight, joinery is definitely something I would like to get into! The traditional Japanese style of woodworking has always intrigued me so, I'd like to dabble with a little of that throughout the new year!
    Happy holidays and I hope no matter how you celebrate them (or don't), you have a great time doing it!

    Hope you don't mind a recommendation. Rather than build from the bottom up, build the branches first brad nailing from the inside of the branches. Then join the very top (45's) together. Cut the bottom to fit. That way you are not bending and stressing the branches to make them fit a pre-cut piece of material and the brad nail holes are on the inside of the tree.

      I haven’t sold any of the Christmas trees to be honest. When I started the channel, it was just to fill dead time in the winter for my off season but, my wife sells her stuff at craft shows and I have seen a lot more of the smaller ones sell well. If I was going to batch out a bunch, I would go with the smaller ones first personally. Especially the Herringbone style. Hope that helps.

    So many missed opportunities to use my tip. Tsk tsk tsk 🤣 😂 It is a hard habit to break. Can't wait to see what you bring in the coming year! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Perhaps something new for you and the rest of us, like your joinery journey mixed into American holiday creations? I think that would be interesting 🤔

      Hey there! I know, I know, I know! 🤣🤣 I did listen to one of your tips though and started putting my tape on me... Or at least, relatively close!...
      To be completely honest, I'm not sure about the captions or really how to do it but, I will figure it out for you! 🤝🏽 I also don't know how the captions would work either as I don't speak at all. So, would the captions be just a typed-out explanation of what I'm doing step-by-step?.... Now that I said it out loud, I think that's what you meant🤣 I also did not forget about the "stacked tree shelf" either. I am still going to make it.
      The idea of Japanese joinery mixed with American holiday creations would be cool! I am grateful for the recommendation. It definitely helps me with concepts. I'm a framer, roofer, and siding installer by trade, and the finished work along with traditional joinery has always intrigued me.
      Thanks for the support and ideas. I appreciate ya! Thanks and, Happy Holidays!

      @@hardshellwoodworks Yes that's it basically. Perfect example in this video would be like the 11.5 cut, instead of on the board ( all though a very nice look and new to me), along the bottom of the screen saying "11.5 inches from tip to tip at a 45° angle". Although I think it might increase the editing time for the videos, it would reduce the number of comment questions for things of that nature in the future.
      Speaking of the Stacked Shelf Tree, after my comment I started thinking of that. The quick and easy way with everything cut, glued and nailed. And the possibility of doing one with different joint types to accomplish the same goal/look as far as the item goes.
      Even the Simple Tree with dovetails perhaps, to hold the pieces together? Or bow tie inlays?
      LoL look at me, over-complicating the simplest of things...

    • @hardshellwoodworks
      @hardshellwoodworks  Рік тому +1

      @@Wolfe_Metals_Stacking Ha Ha Ha! I'm with you there! That's primarily one of the major reasons I don't talk in the videos..... I can over-complicate the uncomplicated very quickly! 🤣 That's why I just stay silent and try my best to simply build the project!
      I can definitely work on learning how to add subtitles. I'm using Premiere for editing and I believe it has a Subtitle feature. If it helps others be more confident with the projects and leaves more detail, I'd be happy to try and learn how to do it.
      Bow-tie inlays in the Christmas tree? 😲.......😎 That would actually be pretty cool! Maybe instead of using the standard bow tie inlay, I could get my buddy to use his cnc and do them in the shape of the Chevy Bowtie!!! That would be pretty cool! Tons of possibilities!

    Is it just my perspective or are the top pieces not quite the right length to be parallel to the branches and had to be bent in to meet the branches ? I think I see a little curve on them which honestly looks kind of interesting. I suppose you could leave the bottom 22.5 deg ends long and then mark them to fit and cut later ? Anyway, nice project and video and I’ve been playing with the concept in CAD for different thicknesses ! 👍🏻

    • @hardshellwoodworks
      @hardshellwoodworks  Рік тому +1

      Hey there! So after reading your message, my daughter and I have been staring at the tree up against the wall trying to figure it out. 🤣 The math behind the measurements says it should all be square at the top. However, it does look like it has a slight "lean" at the top toward the left.
      This was actually the second one I made of this exact tree. The first one I did was a "test" to run the numbers and make sure that the math would work. So, even though the numbers I listed on the tree are correct, I suppose it's possible that my cuts were off on the 45-degree angle during the video at the top branches which would cause one side to be "bent in" more during the assembly.
      I have another tree inside the (Community) tab on my channel that used 45-degree cuts at the base which really gave the tree a unique look! I didn't make a video on that though as I miscalculated the angles of branches 2 and 4. I did correct the angles on the final image with the blueprint though.
      I know what CAD does as far as software but I am not sure about its overall capabilities. If you are able to design the tree or, would like to inside the program, I would be interested in seeing what you came up with! I think it would be really cool!
      Thank you for your comment and letting me know you enjoyed the video! Happy holidays!

    • @dgrleblanc9025
      @dgrleblanc9025 Рік тому

      @@hardshellwoodworks Well I think the way the geometry works the required lengths of the top pieces end up being a strong function of the thickness of your stock. Also, with beveled ends, the length specs in the video are subject to a little interpretation so I may have misunderstood the intention ... anyway, I drew the tree up initially using 3/4" thick stock assumed (eg. standard 1x4) and my long top piece ended up being 14-3/4 on the long side and 13-11/16 on the short side - the short top piece was 13-11/16 on the long side and 12-5/8 on the short side ... then I re-drew it for 5/8 thick stock (eg. BB plywood) but keeping bottom and branches same length, and the long top would end up 12-25/32 & 11-29/32 and the short top would be 11-29/32 & 11 ... so for a 1/8" difference in thickness the short piece length changes by almost 1-3/4" !!! So just a small change in the wood from 1st prototype to 2nd unit could result in some geometry changes !
      this is why I think the best approach might be to leave the two top pieces long (just do the 45 deg bevels) and glue them up - then fit them to find the alignment with the rest of the tree and mark the 1" overlap ... then cut those bevels (I think there should be enough room to get the assembly on the miter saw)
      I don't think I can post attach a picture to this comment or I would show my work as it were - haha

      Ok. I see. You are 100% correct! Right in assuming the standard thickness of the 1" x 4" @ 3/4" of an inch as that is what I had used, as well as, not being directly in line with the lower branches. I believe that with your measurements, the tree "top" would come to a taller "point", leaving roughly 7/8" or 13/16" (guesstimating) room inside between the top shelf and the branch. Is this correct?
      Crazy! I didn't think I would be "dissecting" a simple wooden Christmas tree down to the 32" of an inch but, this is actually really interesting to me. I enjoy math and have fun with it! I have been in the residential construction industry my whole (working) life and I can't think of a time I ever measured anything to the 32nd.
      Thank you for the conversation. It's really interesting to me! I'm pretty sure you can't upload the "work" here but, if you'd like to email me, you are more than welcome too as I would really appreciate seeing your draft and the numbers.

      Hey Paul! That’s a good question. To be completely honest, I don’t know. I’ve never tried to sell one. I would imagine somewhere between 10$ and 15$. But it really depends on where you are also. And, how much you put into it. Just a plain one, that would be my guess. However, if you were to putty the nail holes and stain it, maybe around 20$ - 25$ with some type of backer board on it. At the end of the day I would imagine it’s all in marketing and how you are able to promote it. The quality is definitely better than places like hobby lobby as it’s made of real wood and not particle board. If you made it from aromatic cedar, you could get even more I suppose.
