  • I have been away from home working onboard a ship for six months now. The long voyages through heavy weather and very short port stays are starting to take a toll on me. Homesickness is starting to kick in...

Know the feeling. For a USN destroyer, it was six months in Vietnam and nine months home. Without exception the six months would stretch to seven and maybe a bit more if Seventh Fleet couldn't find a replacement. No internet in those days. Mail every three days. Underway replenishment for stores, fuel and ammo. Bridge watches were 1-in-3. Sometimes port-and-starboard. In no time at all, the routine starts to grind on you. You would want to exchange body parts for something that didn't pitch and roll. Anything that wasn't painted gray. I did survive. I learned a lot. I left the Navy a better person.

I must admit I am so very glad to see these episodes. The Chief is a super fellow and I have nothing but praise for him and his work. Life at sea is hard on a person, but the Chief seems to always have a smile and a great attitude, an admirable trait for anyone to possess. Thank you for such interesting and informative videos. " Life's toughest storms prove the strength of our anchors".....think about it!

I recently came across your channel and now I’m hooked. Growing up in the Philippines, I’ve heard thousand of first hand stories from seamen/seafarers. Our neighbor was a chief steward Ina cargo ship-may he Rest In Peace- and whenever he comes home, we would hang out and he always told the best stories. It was nice that you were able to put into life the stories he told. Please keep doing what you’re doing. Stay safe out there and I hope you could go home very soon. I can’t imagine being away from my family even for a day. God bless.

Excellent documentation Chief Makoi. I served in the U.S. Navy for 15 years. My last deployment was 9 months away from home...8 months being straight out at sea. I was never able to bounce back from that deployment. Physical I haven't been the same but at least I can walk again. Thank you for making this video. I enjoyed it and appreciate it.
    Happy Holidays!!!

Hey Chief...when I watch your videos, I feel strange - sad and happy at the same time with a touch of nostalgia. I was also sailing on general cargo vessels some 20 years ago (3rd,2nd,1st.engineer) most of the time not knowing next port of call and feeling that strange excitement, burden, fear, hopelessness, happiness. Spending life watching all those new strange city lights in night, wondering about your loved ones. It really takes a special kind of person to do what we do.
It is very sad that now in 2019 seafarers contract has to be so long.

20 yrs ago my good friend and room mate joined the merchant marines. 1 month ago He was here in NCal. Hes been literally all over the world. Hes had enough. Its a hard and lonely life from what I hear. I will help him when he returns in a week or 2 from his last run from Hawaii. Funny it always sounded like such an adventurous life to me but tighter budgeting really makes for an austere lifestyle from what I hear. I hope he finds the peace hes looking for. Heres to you guys.

Once again we meet in a virtual port, and once again it's like we're shipmates and shore buddies for a few mins.
Everyone should experience a working solitude for a few weeks or months to see themselves and others in a way most never do and appreciate the human cost on a personal level as you mention here. I did it for well over a decade, mostly in the high Arctic, in a time and place where there was no Internet, no live TV, and often no telephone service and where the longest night was over 3 months long.
Some of those I worked with who were POWs or who spent time in Prison, hardship posts in the Military or aborad ship said the strain of mundane isolation on one's soul could be more stressful than prison and the effects somewhat like solitary confinement absent some social support of co-worker friends.
I expect you also experience some sense of culture shock along with the Joy when suddenly returning from the starkness of the sea to society, cities, fresh smells and interactions with others as we did. It's good that some of us can revisit that with you.

    Hi Chief, nice work.
You made a video called "Sailing The Rough Seas | Seaman Vlog" where you were very truthful about how you feel during intense storms etc.
I’m wondering if you can or willing to do a video of the various storms and its effects on the ship. From the bridge to the engine room / steerage / structural flex and verbalize your concerns considering your scope of responsibility etc?
In the early 60’s when I was just a little Navy Brat, my family was stationed in Japan for 3 years. When we came back to the states, we were placed on the USS General J. C. Breckinridge (AP-176) for the trip back home.
Right after the ship got out into the open ocean, it was hit by a pretty decent storm. We were rocked about quite a bit, just as you show in your video. I remember the long passageways and watching the ship rise up / roll right front of me. I sure do remember the lean walking technique as the ship rolled and you were moving about.
    Keep up the nice work.

    • @AguiluzMulawin
      @AguiluzMulawin 3 роки тому

If you can remember, Chief Makoi did the Michael Jackson lean. That means the ship was heavily in a storm and rough waters.

Chief, another great video! These are the things, the work men and women do, to take care of their families. I know a little about this. I was a police officer for 42 years. I gave up holidays, weekends, birthdays and many other occasions. Not to the level as you are doing, but still I missed many important family events. In the end it does matter. We all want the best we can do for our families. God bless you Chief, be safe.
