this us such a lovely story. obviously the animators originated from china but the representation in such a story is so heartwarming for me as a half chinese american girl who isn't as connected to their roots as they wish to be

Also just noticed now you mentioned komainu in Japanese culture. THAT is indeed a mix of lion and dog (or so I heard). They're slightly different to me, but maybe they share the same origin or something idk.
