      SMiller5488 yes it comes off very easy. I work on GM vehicles for a living. they're easy to work ok for the most part, but my biggest issue with GM is that they just leak. the majority of ford's and dodge vehicles I see are hardly ever leaking. but GM vehicles are very bad about leaks, and seeps.

      D to Tha A where do you work on GM vehicles? I guess it's possible they send all of the ones with factory leaks over your way. I work the parts count at a Chevy dealer, and I don't see the same problem.

      Matthan Nollman Bad rear main seals and bad intake gaskets. I've had a 93 Camaro, 97 Silverado, and an 01 Lumina all with these problems. Had a 86 K10 and the 97 Silverado with bad transmissions. No more GMs for this guy. Next truck will be a F250.

      @Chris i understand what you are saying but at the same time would you trust the crash rating of a Pre 2000's anything compared to Present day ? my buddy had a 2012 Dodge Ram and a women fell asleep at the wheel or what ever happend but she pulled a hard 90 degree right in the middle of the high way and nearly hit him head on everything from the Cab back was still intact on the truck , "THAT TRUCK saved his life" i got a 2012 F-150 super crew ya all these brands may not be as good as the old truck but safety is what matters the most you know god dam well if you got hit almost head on in a 90s truck at a high rate of speed you would be lucky to walk away at the end of the day,

    GM has been using this coating on all their body on frame vehicles since at least 90's, and it has worked well. My old 93 Caprice's frame is in excellent shape and is just now getting some mild surface rust. Give me a break!

      And I will play devils advocate. My friend has an 06 2500 Chevy used to plow, the entire undercarriage is rusted badly. On the other hand my other friends 05 Chevy which does not see plow duty has a pretty clean frame. It all depends on what one does with it.

      mike o: The biggest problem is that the dealerships don't actually tell you they are wax coated. This is important because many people don't know that it's Wax and think it's just grime. So I've seen people actually try to pressure spray the wax off mistaking it as dirt.

      Are you crazy? Where have you ever seen a chevy "rust out so bad"? I live in Buffalo NY, the only trucks that DON'T rust out are Gm's. The dodges rust bad, and all the fords around here are rotted out in fenders and door bottoms too. Say what you want about other features but everyone knows the GM's, FWIW, don't rust that bad under normal circumstances. Peace.

    • @thestigmach1984
      @thestigmach1984 8 років тому +3

      Yeah everyday I see newer chevys with more frame rust and wheel well rust than my 04 dodge. it's still got original frame paint and only bubble over the wells. hell my 1987 ramcharger still has the paint on a lot of the frame. how can you seriously think the chevy will do better when it doesn't even have paint on it. I don't know what they do up in NY but here in mo they use sand. so as your driving down the road your vehicle is getting sandblasted. if this guy can scrape it off with his fingernail how can you expect it not to under driving conditions with sand and salt? also why would I want to pay that much for a truck they couldn't even take the time to paint the frame on?

    • @jfdb59
      @jfdb59 8 років тому +2

      Well I see a ton of 3rd gen dodges rotted to hell up here. Chevy's not so much. Perhaps the sand is abrading the wax off there worse than the salt does here? That does suck. I agree wax doesn't last forever but I had my truck for about 7 years and it was fine. I also added duraflaps though and that saves the rockers. And agreed on the prices. I'd never pay that much for damn truck anyways so I don't have to worry about it. I could afford it but why? My trucks MAKE me money, they don't TAKE it. Whether these guys want to admit it or not none of them are really good quality. None of the class 1 to 3/4 are commercial grade equipment. I would LOVE to see one of these cushy interiors after about 250K miles or real use. And then where is all the value you paid so much for to start with? The depreciation will be absurd on these things. Once all the doodads are busted they won't command the prices. Just look at the used prices on luxury vehicles. I expect that HUGE unforeseen repair costs are going to bankrupt a lot of unsuspecting people buying these money-pits used out of warranty. Hell, just the injection system on a 6.7 powerstroke is a 15K bill if they get water in the system. Fuck that!

    For the price of the new trucks I took a 93 1500, switched it to 1 ton suspension with the straight axle, put a 6.0 vortec in it with twin turbos and rigged the allison transmission they put behind the 8.1 the whole build had me around 34k including the truck and it can still out tow anything new off the lot and I'm damn sure it's never going to have near the problems.

      Very smart use of your money. You must have vehicle manufacturers blowing up your phone trying to hire you ? Bottom line, you just polished a turd. And uh, yeah... let's see a video of it out-pulling a new diesel from any manufacturer. I happen to have a 2016 King Ranch diesel. Unless you make a video of your pick-n-pull special towing a 5th wheel uphill or something... I call BS. I can tow a 12k lb 5th wheel and get 18 mpg all day (under 60mph). Beat that.

      John R I highly doubt he did a solid axle swap twin turbos and a Alison swap that would require so much work it wouldn't be worth it Alison won't fit under a 93 cab without a bunch of modifications. It maby his dream truck but I doubt it exists if it did he should make a video of it and prove to everyone how well it pulls.

      Dean Fuller 4k videos are rather large in size. Tip: quite a few vloggers use FHD (1080p) 1920x1080 @ 60FPS. With today's Internet speeds it shouldn't be any problem. And to be honest, I prefer 1080 @ 60fps ;)

    I think for the price tag of any of the new diesels i would rather just take the best from all and make a custom truck built to suite. 67-72 c30 body (my preference in body), fully boxed stock frame for strength, cummins 12v for reliable power and cheaper repair, Allison trans, Ford high pinion axles, 1 ton leafs all around with helper bags in the rear, with fully coated frame and under side.
    Just in parts you would be at around $20-30k depending on how thrifty you can be and you would basically have a new truck.

    I would just like to point out that the Silverado has had power extending tow mirrors since 2000 and still does. In fact, they added power folding to them in 2015(and side view cameras). Prior to that they only had power folding in the non tow mirrors.

    • @BigTruckBigRV

      Big Truck Big RV Right you are, I just looked it up and surprisingly GM axed the power extending in the 2015 and replaced it with power folding. I must say, I'm quite disappointed. Do the Ford's tow mirrors do both? If so, I think I might have to look in that direction when I upgrade next year.

    That wax like coating has been used on GM vehicle frames for what seems like for ever. The first time I saw that stuff was on a 1975 El Camino my dad owned. I think it was also on my moms 76 Oldsmobile Cutlas in some areas. Those cars held up well. We do not get as many rust issues here as in other areas, but that coating is doing what GM wants and needs it to do. All the manufactures have really upped their game in rust protection. The light pickup field is to hot for any manufacture to put out instant rust buckets. Just look at the extensive measures that have been adopted over the years to address the issue. Pre coated metals, use of shielding, replacing rust prone steel parts with corrosion resistant material in many vehicle areas, seriously improved wiring and wiring connectors, Improved paints. The frame is thinner in depth over earlier frames because it is now a fully boxed frame instead of just a open 'C' section. Those cross members are much stronger too. Look at how the capacity ratings on these trucks has climbed a lot over the years. People are now using these things to haul and tow stuff which was the realm of medium and heavy duty International, Mack and Kenworth commercial trucks not all that long ago. I do not know about your area, but around here, there are still large numbers of 90's, 80's and even 70's trucks running around in every day use and abuse. And most of those leaving service now are just plain used up and to expensive to repair, or not equipped with features people want, not because they are rusted piles. I see a number of them advertised with things like bad brakes, transmissions or motors and the bodies and frames and even interiors are still in good shape.

    E coat is water based.. So if your not painting over it,it will wash off at some point. The frames are painted. The wax coating is to help with rust

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  7 років тому +4

      Nate Rogers: not true sir. The e-coat bath consists of 80-90% deionized water and 10-20% paint solids. The deionized water acts as the carrier for the paint solids which are under constant agitation. The final product is not water based, water just acts as the carrier but is not part of the paint itself. they are both used for metal and rust protection.

    I have several spray cans of NOX rust to touch up spots where the lift contacts. The difference is it doesn't peel like paint or lift like paint or ecoat and it beads and repels water. If you maintain it properly like anything else it will hold up. I have two Mid 2000's F350's that look just as bad as my 05 dmax, not a flake of paint or Nox on either haha. The only better solution would be to powder coat and cost wise it isnt there yet.

    Everybody is making good trucks these days. If you off road a lot , you might need the bone jarring front straight axle that the Ford and Ram HD trucks use, if your a pavement driver like me, you might like the IFS on the GM HDs. I sold Fords back in 2010 and love the F150 with the IFS. They outsell HD Fords big time and are a great truck. At that time I owned an 08 Duramax Dually Silverado It rode almost as good as the F150s. I got to drive many Superduties. After my Silverado Dually and the amazing F150s, they felt like a lumber wagon to me. So far I love my 2016 Silverado HD Silverado.

The worst part is the GM frames hang lower and so you see the rust when walking up to the truck. Plus, I had the LLY which had problems. Nice looking, but switched to RAM now and like how it's built. So what's your thought on the slightly thicker frame? My understanding NEW Frame is 1/8" and GM has been 3/8"?? For awhile. I'm wondering how GM with a thicker boxed frame is not able to tow more and compete with FORD and RAM?

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  8 років тому +1

      Micah Watts. According to the Ford engineers, the new Super Duty uses 4mm+ (1/8"+) thick 50k and 80k PSI High strength steel throughout the frame. I'm curious as to why they say "4mm and Up" but don't give the full specs. I was told that because some of the areas overlap, this is where they get the "and up" sizing (similar to other brands). The GM Frame is 4.59mm (.60mm thicker than the Super Duty, which isn't much) and 60k PSI. Older GM C-Channel frames (pre-2011) were 5.2mm thick vs Ford's 6.7mm Thick C-Channel. Most people don't understand that the main purpose of using High Strength Steel is so you can make a much thinner metal as strong as a thicker gauge steel. This doesn't do well when exposed to salt air and rust unfortunately.

    • @mecheng1993
      @mecheng1993 8 років тому +2

      Higher strength steels generally mean that they're less ductile and more brittle. 50k and 80k psi tensile strength is also a very broad range. I'd be much more interested in the actual composition of the steel and the rockwell hardness of it. That will tell you a lot more than what they've spewed out from their marketing department.

  • @SouthwestORV

    Prior to the new 2017, it's been illustrated time and time again that the frame is stiffer on the Chevy and Dodge, at least torsionally. We use Super Dutys day in and day out at work (Construction) and they are good trucks, but they certainly twist and creak a lot torsionally. Lots of cab noise along those lines. But yes, I would own one. I am commenting specifically on F-350 models up through '16.

    • @jameslandon4126
      @jameslandon4126 7 років тому

      I prefer a strong, flexible frame. Ford never should have boxed their frames just because a few videos were made showing Fords frames flexing more than the others. C-channel frame design is better than a full boxed frame. Semis don't have fully boxed frames and look what they can tow and how much weight they carry on them; dump trucks as well.

    It appears to me that it's almost like a rubberized wax coating, which will probably help with absorbing vibrations and the water seems to be off of it as opposed to the painting frames which water always gets in and starts the flake the paint off and rust rotted away so honestly I go with the Chevy frame just saying

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  7 років тому +1

      ParkwayJoe81: you make some good points about the possible noise and vibration reduction of using wax....but sadly it doesn't have any type of rubber in it....it's just wax. Plus, the body frame/cab isolation bushings doing the majority of the vibration and noise transfer reduction. Good points though. Plus, Ecoating is a far better bonding technology than simply painting. The Ecoated finish is electrostatically bonded to the metal vs just adhering like regular paint. Thanks for commenting

    Most P/U truck buyers never get close to what the truck is able to do. The more heavy duty you go the worse the ride gets why they have not put air ride seats in is beyond me people will pay when they feel that ride.

    I prefer my 8 inch ladder frame on my older truck, it easier to rust proof and wont accumulate dirt to make it rust faster since its not close box

    Your E coating is not penetrating the metal. The only place it is protecting the steel is on the surfaces they can actually spray with the powder. The wax coatings actually impregnate the steel with the corrosion protection. Chevy Better.

    If you really pay attention to how the frames are designed and manufactured pay attention to where the steering box is mounted.
    Both Chevy and dodge the frame is weaker at this most important area, hence aftermarket support for strengthening these areas in bolt on kits are available. I've seen both truck frames damaged in these areas, I've never seen a Ford with damage in this area whether it be a Superduty or any previous models. I currently own an 07' Superduty.

      Agreed. I've been in the business of building off-road trucks since the late 70's and I've seen so many cases of frame damage on Chevy trucks it's ridiculous. Ford frames don't break like Chevy and Dodge frames do.

      But GM uses rack and pinion. Their tie rods break not mounting locations.

    I like the way most GM drive but damn they do cut corners but each major automaker cuts the corner some place. Good years/combos with each one exp when it comes to Diesel pick ups. DEF is a joke I feel bad for people that fall for having to use that.

    I drive a Silverado. Am I the only neutral guy that doesn't care what you drive? I certainly wouldn't down your Ford or Ram or Tundra, etc. It's your choice and your money.

      I would down on the RAM, but more because I've watched the crash test videos and seen how bad it is compared to the others. the Ford is bit of a mixed bag, it's more expensive to have the body work done due to the aluminum body, but at the same time you don't have to worry about the cab rusting out on you.

      maybe you should watch some videos on the differences of working with an aluminum body over steel when doing repair work (not just swapping out a fender or some crap like that.
