I know when you get something that last good while might think it was a good deal but good leather should last 20 years im old and have learned that always shop hard for anything that cost that much
You made some excellent points but I’d love to see an update to this video. 11:05 - your 1945 option is now almost $700 (more expensive than a same sized saddleback) 11:30 - that briefcase is now almost $700 (more expensive than a same sized saddleback) 12:10 - Marlondo? Didn’t you criticize Saddleback earlier in the video for not being “made in the USA?” (4:07) Marlondo is manufactured in China; per their own website: “All of our products are made in our own workshop in…north central China near Xi'an.” 13:02 - that moosebrand briefcase is the same price but the saddleback XL’s briefcase price is now almost $100 less at $689.
I have the extra large briefcase from Saddleback and I absolutely love it!! I bought it about 7 years ago and I've used it for college. It still looks as good today as the day I bought it. It was pricey, but I feel it was still a great investment.

I bought my Saddleback XL briefcase in 2009. I still love it- it has aged beautifully and I can attest to the durability and craftsmanship having dragged it through canyons and cities alike all over the world. That said, I can't understand the price hikes. I'm priced out. You're assessment is fair. My sister has bought Saddleback in the last couple of years and the product doesn't seem as tough as what I got 10+ years ago.
Generally speaking, you do only have two options, either chrome or veg tanned leather. There are other natural methods. Veg tanned leather is the only real choice for hand tooled anything on your product. Veg tanned leather isn't as soft and supple "out of the box" unless it has been split to a very small weight (thickness) and conditioned heavily. Chrome tanned leather is a garment or upholstery grade leather. For briefcases, it means that the leather is weaker than its veg tanned counterpart. The chrome tanning process is much harsher on the hide, the result is that the fibers in the hide are much looser (weaker) than their veg tanned counterparts. The chrome tanning process can be highly toxic and the hides themselves can cause irritation if the haven't been properly neutralized at the tannery. If you have skin issues or tend to sweat a lot, it is probably a good idea to avoid a great deal of exposure to unlined chrome tanned leather. Chrome tanned leathers will damage metal and other materials over time unless the bag is lined with the proper material (holsters and knife sheaths are made with veg tanned leather). It can be very difficult to determine the difference between chrome tanned and imitation leather. Lined imitation leather is about impossible to to to distinguish from chrome tanned leather. Imitation leather is very weak, buyer beware! The "Real Leather" tag or stamp is completely meaningless, you want full grain or at least top grain leather. Suede is weaker than top grain leather. The bottom grain fibers are looser than the top grain fibers. Chrome tanned leather is actually cheaper than veg tanned leather, the beg tanning process is more expensive. Hand saddle stitched, while expensive, will outlast machine stitched products AND will not unravel if a stitch gets cut. Another option is to contact a maker in your local market instead of the mass market options. For about the same prices, you can have it made to your specific needs. They can also produce the the matching accessories that can be difficult to find.
Saddleback owner here from back in the day when their shit was still amazing. And I do mean amazing. Mine and my husband’s bags are about 10 years old. I’ve since seen one in the wild about 3 years ago. I immediately recognized the style and got a closer look. Got caught looking so had to comment, hey is that a SBL? Oh yeah they were pleases to be recognized with said monster bag. I was so sad for this person. Comparatively it was crap. Quality of leather just down the shitter. I was also aware they’d really bumped up their pricing structure so was doubly cringing inside knowing this person had forked over a mortgage payment for that crappy ass bag. I’ll forever keep mine. It gets cycled with my others. It and their pricing was what jumped me into making my own leather products. Been at it about as long as I’ve had my SBL and have gotten decent. Enough that family receives nice leather gifts these days. It’s expensive af for a hobby but it’s hella cheaper than therapy!!
I have the SBL tote, can't recall the name, and the big wallet. I purchased both from Dave's deal several years ago. I just purchased the big mouth backpack. I frequent the site regularly, however, the site has fallen off. I don't see the bags I purchased several years back. Actually, I don't see anything that has caught my eye. Now, the site isn't worth visiting. Until they get more items, I'll stay away for a while. Hopefully, Dave watches these videos and go back to how things were.
Hey, tone down your arrogance, ok? Sure, maybe you got an item that was better quality but that doesn't mean you should be belittling others. If that person is happy with it, then leave them alone. You don't have to feel sorry for them.
Purchased a Marlondo after doing tons of research. I asked both companies for information about their leather and watched tons of reviews. Saddleback took about a week to even respond to my questions. The owner of Marlondo contacted me same day and emailed me a very detailed email about their products. I immediately bought their Double Space Briefcase and love it. Great video.

Very much agree with your assessment. Yes, I too wanted one of Saddleback but not any more, too expensive. For my briefcase I have two Hartmann, one 4 inch tradition leather briefcase, the other Hartmann a narrow tweed sided briefcase. Received many compliments on both. FYI, please I beg you, cut back on the music; it is difficult understanding you over the music. Though I very much think your video’s are extremely informative, the music is a major problem. Now when I see a video you created I start it, when I hear the music I close it down. Mr. Muraski, cut out the music we came to hear you not fight the music.
I definitely understand your points and they are all valid in my opinion. When I started looking for a leather bag I landed on Saddleback and after about a year of research I decided to buy one used off Ebay for half the price of a new one. I must say I think I lucked out with the price and overall quality. That said, I don't see myself ever buying a new full priced product from them.
You confirmed what I suspected about Saddleback. I can see where a person would like the aesthetic of the brands being visible and I could see it as an option but I wouldn't want it on something I take to work. The custom Hide 1945 is the ticket for me.....someday. Thanks

I bought Saddleback's Classic Briefcase 7-8 years ago. I've used it nearly every day since then, including some pretty rough use and lots of travel, but it still looks great and is in excellent condition. Too bad about the price increase, though. I've never seen a bag I like better, but the Marlondo bags look like they might be a contender.
I enjoyed your video very much. I admit that I own a few SBL products (was actually cleaning my front pocket briefcase while watching the video), but that doesn't mean that I didn't take your opinion into consideration. Fortunately, all of the products that I own were purchased before the price increase, so I'm glad that I own items that still had quality to them. Thanks for the info and I'm investigating the other options you listed as well as Saddleback still since I do like their look. I have to keep my dream of being Indiana Jones alive.

From what I understand the Lafarc tannery is where SBL sources their leather and is a huge supplier to other brands as well (Thursday Boots). Is there any leatherworker you like specifically?
Hi, I enjoy your videos and I appreciate your opinion on this, but some of the information you provided on the topic seems to be incomplete. I have no affiliation with saddleback, but I'm an engineer and I enjoy doing extensive research before making a purchase! From my research what you refer to as a "decrease in quality" is a response to early customer complaints that the bags were much too heavy and un-wearable. The leather is still the same quality full grain leather just about 2mm thinner. Also the material of the hardware has been upgraded to (type 304) stainless steel which is substantially more expensive and resistant to corrosion than the nickel plated metal previously used. This combats the thought that there is an attempt to cut costs. The chrome tanned vs vegetable tanned leather discussion is purely a matter of aesthetic preference. I understand that the owner aesthetically prefers chrome tanned leather, but the company has also recently sold limited runs of vegetable tanned leather bags for prices less than the chrome tanned bags. I'm guessing because the veg tanned bags did not require a pigskin lining. Also I have found that Saddleback has been transparent about their prices, and the reason for the increase. They provided advanced notice to all customers that the increase was happening. Unfortunately I was not able to save up for a bag before the price increase... but I am glad to know that the majority of their profits go towards ministry and charity work in Rwanda and Mexico. I hope this provides a little bit of balance on the issues you mentioned. Have a blessed day!
That's whats confusing, the explanation Dave gave was that he didn't realize he was under charging and the price increase would let them put more money into trying new bags. I call BS.
Saddleback Leather pays their workers better than the average, a living wage , they have child care, schooling for older kids teaching them English, cafeteria , they care for the people that work for them in ways that most companies don't here because of the cost etc. You could look at this as better than foreign aid & it keeps them from becoming illegals here because their lives are exponentially improved over the average.
I understand where this vid is coming from. And I decided that I’m over with Saddleback too but then I saw their Flight Bag just recently and made an order with an early bird discount.
I am buying one too. Phenomenal. And I own very nice hand made 100% veg tan leather bags made in the US. It's nice to have several options for the work day
Is it really true that Saddleback leather is now inferior to what was produced years ago? I have older Saddleback bags purchased from eBay and newer bags as well. Although I like Saddleback I have other products too (SAB, Ghurka). I mention this to show that although I ‘m not committed to Saddleback alone I don’t see the difference in quality others see. What am I missing? Are any of the negative comments based on actual data or just personal impressions? Is Dave really using cheaper leather and hardware?
I haven’t seen a really good side by side comparison with old SBL and new, but the theory of inferior quality is pretty widespread. Back in the glory days of SBL you could really get a nice product for a decent price, and I think this where their brand loyalty comes from. I’d love to hear other people’s experience though, as I can’t really speak to any Saddleback products besides the ones I’ve tried.
After shopping with SBL for over 5 years I have also given up on them. They have priced me out. I have a lot of disposable income but there are better alternatives for lower costs. Also I have been completely unsuccessful in getting a warranty repair done. No return communication from them even. And yes I am the original owner.
+Barry Burris agreed, and I think the fact that so many companies have emerged who are willing to fill the void puts SBL in the position of becoming great again, or continuing their decline. I thought this video would offend me --being I own a lot of Saddleback products from briefcases and duffle bags to other accessories. With that said, instead..... I'm grateful you posted these comments. I found your analysis and commentary to be objective, constructive criticism. I like my Saddleback products but am going to consider your recommendations because I don't believe your intention is anything beyond being HELPFUL and HONEST. So for that, I offer my thanks and compliments for taking the time to share these details. I don't entirely agree with how Dave is choosing to run Saddleback -- making products in Mexico for example. I also think you're correct -- the pricing is too high. However, I do like the style and construction that Saddleback offers. Lastly, maybe Dave would do better by laying off on the swanky Africa trips, lowering his price points, and decrease his high profit greediness by having more regard for the people paying to support his company. I will say, if he continues increasing prices, he'll have one less customer with me!

I was in the process to buy saddleback and ready sent an email to them since my hometown not America. Saddleback is my dreamy bag since 2009 back then, but the cost was high for a college student like me, but I still want it and saving some money from my part time job but it still can't buy it. The price is rising from time to time, and when I have much money to finally ready have my dream bag I found your channel. After watching it I turned back and just try to find local craftsman leather on my hometown to custom a bag for me, and also I can help the local economy by buying from them since it still pandemic. I have several items from Saddleback Leather--bought most when it was a decent price (still expensive IMHO) and the prices now are outrageous. Dave must think we are a bunch of idiots. This is a 2 year old video. They've taken heed to some of the criticism and have really improved the leather, namely the DCB color. If you're looking for rugged, SBL is the best there is. You can join a Facebook group and buy used to save some money, or look for a Dave's Deal on their site.
Here we are 6 years later and all the brands you mentioned are MUCH more than Saddleback. What happened? In fact, the few pieces you mentioned are priced today at the before prices. Even with the full effect of Bidenomics.

Classic Briefcase - Limited Run of Vintage Tobacco Cowhide- I was lucky and scooped the last one. I love the look and feel of it but I am def. interested in the vegetable tanned leather, to be honest I will most likely get another one :-) you are right- bang for buck, you can't beat Marlando!!! Yea you may get some criticism but you will also gain respect from others for telling it like it is, and that is more important for someone who does these kinds of reviews. I'll take the honest man's opinion any day.
There's nothing wrong with visible imperfections, brands etc. if you like them, as many people will. What is wrong is that using these skins enables SBL to order second grade or third grade skins, which they proceed to sell as top grade, and then at an increased price. I have some old SBL products which I seldom use, because in practise they are very heavy, but I am happy with their quality and finish. Comparing them with the photographs on the site now it is evident that there is a visible reduction in quality as far as finishing is concerned, particularly edge finishing, which seems now to be non-existent. By the way, did SBL always use chrome tanned leather, or did they once use vegetable tanned?
Raising prices is not "ripping people off." You are not privy to what expenses they may have had which increased on their end; rent, labor, insurance, new equipment, expansion, loss of supplier, etc. It is a victim mindset to feel this way. The free market, with supply and demand is great because if people pay the price you charge, the market is bearing your pricing structure. You should have bought the bag when it was cheaper rather than insult the company for having a profit-based business. You come off as whining. Not trying to be insulting, just sharing my perspective as you shared yours. Cheers.

Excellent presentation! I bought a briefcase from saddleback, before the price hike and it's ok, but it has some design flaws. Now they're way overpriced, and, as you point out, they're not a luxury brand, not even close. Thanks for the alternative options list.
Great opinion and thoughts. I purchased my saddleback leather large briefcase in 2007 winter for $398 including free shipping. I should've gotten medium size instead of large but back then price difference was mere $50. I still have it and still love it but only for what I paid for. Would I pay $600~$800 for the same bag that I bought? I don't know. I don't think I would if it's twice the price I paid for. I still believe saddleback leather makes great durable well designed product. But I do agree with you on "value" part of the product. Thanks for the review.
First hand experience here with Ruitertassen (Thanks again!) and the quality is simply amazing. I can't imagine another brand doing it better, and if they did, not enough to justify several hundred dollars more. Designer and other fashion house brands are a different story, and we can argue forever over whether or not their prices are justified, but if you're a brand going for that bare bones, everyman look, you just have to be more fair in your pricing.
@kshiftkometh yes. I can't believe I paid over $20,000 for their pvc bags. Yes, there's some leather added to their items, but, overall, the Bags are mainly composed of pvc.
The only thing I disagree with is the branding and scars. I know this is super objective but I like the imperfections. Price increasing and quality drop is a huge turnoff though. Your video is spot on
I travel a lot - US, Europe, Mexico - by plane, car, train, walking. I have a strong interest in the travel bags I use. I’ve had a chance to own a Saddleback bag and have considered buying more for travel use. Great design, like the color choices, and the associated travel fantasies fed by Dave and buyers add to perceived value. But the reality is they are way to heavy. If you’re 20, lugging the weight is not a problem. But as I aged, I started following the general rule for pack weight which is hump not more than 10% of your body weight. I bought other bags.
It amazing how many people and leather companies have emailed me, thanking me for speaking the truth. A lot of guys don’t want to chance upsetting a company in fear of losing out on “influencer deals”. I’m happy I could be of help, a few other brands I’ve really become fond of lately: Satchel and Page, Basader, and Mascon Leather. Happy hunting!
I have 6 of SBL's products: 2 wallets, 1 notepad holder, Moleskine cover, Bible cover and large front pocket back pack. I have to say that I do like them but 2 things that I don't care for is the weight and the price. I got all of my stuff pre-2015 and I talked myself into spending the money. My wife thought that I was crazy buying that backpack. The 1 product that I considered to be their best product was a small Bible cover with a drawstring but they discontinued it. Now they sell separate books of the Bible as a stitched book, to me, that is just someone trying to make a few dollars... or a lot of dollars. I use to brag on them but most people I know, can't afford their products.
I have a few pieces from them…back when their briefcases were lined with pig skin…more than 10 years old. The water bag I’ve used a lot although it’s heavy. I think I paid 5 something for it. I have their huge book bag too. The beast? Very impractical, heavy, etc. When I first shopped with them the prices were comparable to other leather goods stores or maybe a bit less … Compton colonel Littleton for example. Now their prices are not justifiable for me either. Although I have to say that a lot of leather goods makers I was shopping had a HUGE spike in their prices during the pandemic…increases of 50% or more. Not sure why.

You'll definitely get a lot of criticism from the die-hards. The quality has definitely dropped (leather and build quality). SBL has also given me some issues in regards to poorly built bags. Glad you voiced your opinions and you made a lot of valid points. Thanks for sharing!
Not only is the bags are poorly made, the site hardly has anything worth buying. What happened to most of the items? The site looks a lil naked. However, I've recently purchased the big mouth backpack. I hope I haven't wasted $599 on a bag that's poorly made.
Colonel Littleton bags are outstanding. I have two of them from years ago, and they look great, have weathered incredibly well, I have one for 17 years. However, the prices are crazy high. If I am going to pay as much as Saddleback charges, I'd get American Made.
I own many Saddleback pieces. I have a large classic briefcase in coffee brown, a satchel in tobacco, a big leather wallet in tobacco and an old bull belt in black. I bought all these before that price increase. Even then, I hummed and hawed quite a bit, trying to find alternatives (read cheaper) bags elsewhere. However, back then (we're talking about 5-6 years ago) there were none. At least, none that I knew of. Even Saddleback was hardly known. I was thinking of buying a leather backpack. I want to thank you for turning me onto Marlondo bags. They are beautiful, use better leather and have that rugged styling that I like. My next leather piece will not be a Saddleback. I love my Saddleback pieces, but they were expensive, even then, and that price hike across the board did leave a very bitter taste in my mouth. Like everything else, popularity and demand raised the prices, and seemingly, drove down the quality as well.

The bags with full grain thick leather are heavy. And to use grain corrected leather which has had the imperfections removed and is thinner makes for a product that people want. As to the price increase. Well they realized people will pay the upcharge. Have you seen the price on 6" boots lately? A boot chicago company who outsources their boots charges what Nicks charges for fire jumper boots.
@@bayareaartist999 The White Boot company in Spokane Washington, has been making smoke jumper boots for probably 150+ years. My father bought a pair from the man that owned the company- Otto White. They have been rebuilt a few times. Even rebuilt to fit me. They are 70 years old, and have been taken care of. I rarely wear them, as I don't fight fires in North Carolina. When dad was around, and we lived out there,;that was the best boot to actually work in, that this country made. Many , many makers have copied Otto's designs. They came with a stacked heel on them, that looked a bit strange. Once you wore the boot awhile, you understood the heel had a purpose, totally unrelated to " looks" . They became comfortable to wear.. When Otto died, he left the company to the existing employees. I can't speak about today's operation at all. Simply because I have no contact. It may be exactly the same folks, getting to own some of the company by being a tenured employee. I can also speak some about Obenauf's Leather oils, and their heavier stuff. It is all non toxic, made from natural preservatives. Why is that important ? The lady that is part owner, said she gets calls all the time , from folks in a panic , that say the dog found an open can, or jar, and ate some of it. It doesn't hurt the dog. No need to go to the vet. It will "pass through the dog" . The company is located out West ( Idaho) where they really have fires. Their products are for leather that spends it's life in Mud, rain, deep ashes. It keeps the leather from drying out, and cracking. Finally, I have never worked for either company, and do not have friends there. I am offering truthful information, based upon my experience. I have put Obenauf's on leather hats, on expensive motorcycle jackets. ( Yes, I am a biker , since 1970) . gloves, shoes. For me, their stuff works. I am not someone that worries about impressing others. I just want the product to do what it states it will do--- Both Obenauf's, and White's boots. When my White boots were purchased, they only had one "grade" of boot. Today, I think they have more than one grade. I can tell you that mine are heavy. They are heavy when brand new. Incidentally, they make their best boot, to fit YOUR foot, not someone else's foot. They use to have you make a pattern of both of your feet. So it is normal for them to make two different sized boots, if your feet are different sized. Seriously. Who else does that , with work boots.? The wax-like Obenauf's is essentially the same thing as the heavy oil. It just goes on like paste car wax. In the sun, for awhile, it soaks into the leather. Feel free to be critical. Best of luck.
You can't get real full grain leather without some scarring and marks - if you want a clean perfect surface that's personal preference and theres nothing wrong with that. However, coming from a leatherworker, I personally love those marks. They are part of the life of the animal that your bag came from and I see that as a beautiful thing. Also, just because they chrome tan their leather doesn't mean it's so much worse than veg tanned leather - both will last your entire life if not longer if done right. I do agree with many of your points about SBL as a business but some of your points were just very specific preferences about what you want in leather and people should be able to maked up their own minds about those kinds of things.
You’re right, full grain does have its imperfections and as a leatherworker I’m sure you know that the hides are given a grade based on their imperfections. This is why companies like Marlondo offer their imperfect hide bags at a steep discount, and as you said there is a market for it. I’d just prefer to have a blank canvas for my own patina, the same reason I don’t care for pre-distressed jeans. Looking back I did neglect to mention the advantages of chrome tanning over vegetable tanning and wish I had. Remember that the name of this video is why I’ll never buy anSaddleback briefcase and all of these reasons are my own preferences. There’s something about vegetable tanned leather I love- the way it breaks in, the way it darkens and carmelizes with use, the way the edges can be burnished. To me it’s the best thing until I can afford a shell cordovan bag! These are all just personal preferences, and I’m happy to discuss the pros and cons with people who understand the medium of leather such as yourself. What I’m not tolerant of is price gouging and cash grabbing tactics that prey on people who buy a product based on a name brand they trust. This video isn’t for anyone who’ve already drank the SBL cool-aid, it’s for those who are trying to choose the best value and get the best bang for their buck. Just because soething is given a grade based on visual impurities, though, does not necissarily mean that the leather itself suffers in quality - branding and scarring do not hurt the integrity of the leather. But you're right, at the end of the day it's how you use the leather, whether including imperfections or using clean surface. With jeans it's the same way, although I wouldn't consider scarring equivalent to pre-destress, it would be more like buying a bag that already had patina. The price gauging is not the right way, there should be more transparency maybe about their decisions regarding those prices. I'm a leathersmith and veg tan is the only way to go, it is fully customizable for color and much more. As far as marks, stretch marks are one thing, but the range marks (brands and such) are only included if they are requested!!! I talk at length with my clients and take several weeks just to design exactly what they would like. Yes, real handmade, leather bags are expensive they can take 100s of hours to make (especially if they are hand cut and sewn)... But if you are working with the right leathersmith, you will get everything you want, and amazing quality!
It’s funny watching this video now. Price seemed to be the biggest complaint and many of these other brands you recommend have risen their prices quite a bit as well. I think you were mostly mad that they increased their prices. The differences in percentages had a lot to do with things like the complexity to build, the fact that they use such large, singular pieces means they may waste a lot of the hide and they weren’t running their business well. Dave even admitted as much. They weren’t in a good spot to continue growing and meeting the demands. He probably could have risen the prices in a better way that wouldn’t have been such a shock, but it made sense looking back. As for aesthetics, the branding/scar look is desirable by many, myself included. It’s rare to find this as many leather products are made to be 100% uniform and to do that there’s a lot of processing. These marks make the bag 100% unique. The integrity of the leather isn’t impacted, so why not if you like it. Finally of chrome vs veg, I, like you, used to think one was better than the other. That isn’t quite true. Chrome tanned is quicker but that isn’t always what makes the total cost (unless you do nothing more). The final finish can have a large impact on the total cost. But chrome leather isn’t technically inferior. I personally like veg, but there many instances where veg isn’t going to be the best choice of leather. Just depends on the project and what you’re going for. Finally, does saddleback use the best leather? No. It’s good but it’s pretty raw and unfinished. That’s intentional and adds to the look. They’ve made some stuff in veg (I have a fpbc in veg) and personally I think for their designs, especially when using the dusty carbon and good tobacco, the chrome works better. Overall, I think sbl is pretty good. I have a few from them and a few from other companies. I can’t say one is better than the other as they’re all different. I think they’re a little overpriced, but not too far off.
You did piss me off... but the more I learn you are right. I love having a brand or stretch marks on the bag, doesn’t bother me one bit, but you shouldn’t pay extra for it, you should pay less. You are also right about vegetable tan. I learned that after getting into leatherworking myself. Thanks for your research, maybe Dave will pull his head out and fix it. For what its worth, I just bought my wife a large tote bag from Basader. It's going to be tan Essex leather with purple edges, and made entirely by one woman in New Hampshire for under $300.00!
I have a few Saddleback bags and I think they’re great and can be really good value for money-if you buy the right one. The briefcases are a bit much, but I have some of their more entry bags, and their veg tan Flight Bag (which was in the 600s and totally worth it, the veg tan leather they use is amazing and it doesn’t have as many of the extra D-rings and stuff you see on most SBL bags), but I definitely agree that they’re not always a good value. Once you get over $600, I don’t think you really have to consider that you’re getting chrome tanned instead of veg tanned and it makes a difference. Right now, I just got a Cravar bag and it’s been a revelation. I have an FC15 and it’s incredible, easily comparable to SBL bags that are $2-300 more. In short, I think SBL makes a great bag, but it’s certainly not for everyone. I think the biggest issue with SBL, though, isn’t the cost of the bags or the fact they use chrome instead of veg or that they have those jangly D-rings or that they’re heavy, it’s that they’re just not managed that well as a company. The price increase you’re talking about came out of nowhere, and then down the line they lowered some prices, then raised them, and they just did another adjustment a few months ago. They just don’t seem to have a good idea of what’s going on in an administrative sense. And right now, I think their bags just aren’t very creatively designed at the moment. Each new bag seems like a variation on what they already make. They made a Grandfather case, which is basically a small version of their hard side suitcase, so they made that in a bunch of sizes. Then the front door bag….it seems like their last big piece of innovation was the Gladstone opening Flight Bag and then they made a couple versions of basically that bag in different sizes, the front door bag is a variation. Now, compared to Marlondo, I think I’d go for SBL every time, Marlondo’s construction doesn’t seem to be on the same level as SBL’s. But now that I know about Cravar, Satchel and Page, and Bleu de Chauffre, it’s hard to think I’ll go back to SBL any time soon.

Hey man, thanks for the comment. It looks like they’re in the process of restructuring and adding/removing product. They recently added a new slim briefcase with some decent additions. I still think their price is too high, but people will vote with their wallets. I’ll need to check out that Google doc and why it’s not working...

After rummaging through the site, I still want a few more, but am extremely hesitant from all the negative feedback recently. For these prices, I'd expect them to atleast provided recessed stitching so that the stitches do not rub and get cut from surface exposure. Nope. At least they use sail thread instead of leather sewing thread. Would also expect the briefcases to be cloth lined with foam padding so as to provide cushioning impact for electronics, burnished leather edges, brass or steel eyelets for the steel tongue to fit through instead of just a leather holes punched....nope. You just declared that vegie tan is better because its "natural" and "takes longer". Both of those points are irrelevant to the final quality of the product. Does Chrom vs Vegie cause color bleed over time on the objects the leather regularly rubs against? Will I have stains on my cotton clothing at some point from use? Does the leather coloring fade faster for Chrome vs Vegie? Does the leather degrade faster? Etc. That's what determines quality of a final product. Not how "natural" the process is or how long it took.
I make custom leather goods. I don't even try to compete with foreign made leather goods due to I am a 1 man shop & I cannot buy the materials at the cost that the big companies do. I also do everything by hand with the exception of stitching. And I do offer hand stitching at an additional cost. I also will not try to compete with the foreign labor wages. But I always use top grade leather. Top grade leather will be very clean leather & not have any brands & crap like that on a side of leather. If there were a brand on it I would cut it out & throw it aside. I always give a customer the best leather available as I would want it myself. Brands may look ok to some but most don't want them. That is just screwing the customer forcing them to buy products with brands. That would be used only if someone ask for it in a custom made good. Brands are usually on 2nd & 3rd grades of leather which is a cheaper priced leather.

As far as leather jackets go I'm partial to Himel Brothers Leather, but I was also really impressed by a jacket from The Real McCoy I tried recently. A bit more affordable is Schott Bros. NYC, and the leather jackets from Satchel and Page (which fit a bit on the slim side). Finally, I've heard nothing but good things about the leather jackets from Wested Co. but haven't tried them for myself yet. I hope this helps!

I’ve owned SBL bags for 10 years now. One consideration that bears mentioning - they offer a 100 year warranty on their products. I’ve used their repair service (no charge, and they paid for shipping) for a backpack strap that came apart due to metal fatigue. What I got back was even better than the original. So this may be a ‘buy once, cry once’ type of situation. My $0.02
Saw one. Thought I'd like one. Saw the video on the build. Realized I could make my own for 1/4 the cost. So I did. Now we make our own bags. Funny thing about the brands, my wife adores those, I prefer clean nice veg tan hides.
I couldn’t agree with you more. Bought Satchel and Page based on one of your other reviews and couldn’t be happier. Using distressed parts of leather remind me of those cheap leather briefcases in airline magazines that use scraps to construct the product.
Simple question. How much mileage do you have on their pieces? Ever use one of their briefcases or canvas tool bags daily for years? I have Galco holsters and Tucker Saddles that I have used for decades and this Saddleback stuff is comparable in quality.
As are the options I mentioned, for less money. It’s a question of value. I’ve had a Galco shoulder holster failure; given enough time even iron will wear through. Show me a Custom Hide briefcase which failed before it’s Saddleback counterpart and I’ll eat my words.
I agree with you on a lot of things and most of them can't be disputed. But what brings people to buy certain products is people buy what they like. Not getting down into numbers or where it's made from but the bottom line is Dave have products people like. It's no different from what Apple computer company is doing. You have a lot of great computers companies out there but Apple seems to catch the buyers eye with their products. I particular like Saddleback Mountainback line. Again, a lot of good companies out there produce canvas and leather products (backpacks in this case) that's a third of the cost than Saddleback. I just so happen like Saddleback better not to mention the 100-year warranty I as of yet to find with other companies. Thanks for the video.
Very good points and well stated. One thing I'd like to add is that this 100 year warranty is simply a good catch phrase and marketing tool. Chances are that SBL won't even be around in 100 years and I don't see how this is much superior to a lifetime warranty. I get what they're after though, and it gets the point across nicely.
I'm not sure about the quality of saddle back and don't own any of their products. I stumbled upon them on UA-cam and found that guy to be very douchy. I totally agree with you regarding the prices, considering he's not using that great leather (but claiming he is) and using cheap labour from Mexico. There are so many other great leather craftsmen out there who do everything themselves and by hand. We got to support them instead.
I purchased their older style extra large brief case about 7/8 years ago as one of Dave's deals. I think I paid $478. Id call it a saddle bag with a handle, and straps.
Sounds like you got a smokin deal!!! If the prices were still in that range I’d reassess my opinion of SBL. My objection is less with the product and more with the business practices.

He also has a huge following, people pay tons of money for his products, made in the USA, and he has a whole niche for people who actually want to buy leather with brands, marks, etc.... While it seems like it might be cutting costs, there is also an appeal (for some people) to get exactly that type of look. I agree with you regarding Saddleback though; made in Mexico where labor is much cheaper and I seriously doubt he is paying his workers much more than the going rate while he is raking in the dough for himself. And I am sure someone has already commented that one can purchase quality leather products in Mexico for a hell of a lot less money!
I have seen their stuff, and while it's not my thing I can certainly understand the appeal. Plus I appreciate the made in USA aspect, at least we can assume the people making Colonel Littleton goods are treated fairly.
Customhide is a really a wonderful company and represents a great value for what you are getting. For me, made in America of inferior quality is shameful but made in America with craftsmanship deserves recognition . MANY companies now just leave the edge of the leather unfinished or coat it with a rubber liquid which over time cracks and looks ugly. The edges of Customhide products are fully leather wrapped and this takes not only more time sewing and skiving (thinning) the leather but also enhances both durability and aesthetics. The best leathergoods company in the past 30 years has always been Ghurkha by Marley Hodgson. His products represent the best combination of savoire faire from design, durability to aesthetics. Customhide may very well be following in that tradition. Made in America, made to last.
Agreed, of all the bags I've tested the Custom Hide is my favorite. It combines the best of all the things I like at a reasonable price, and might very well be the best deal going at the moment!
I purchased 2 Sbl bags, 1 wallet and coin purse from dave deals. I'm glad I purchased them 5 or more years ago when the bags still had the removable pig skin liner. I was looking at their site this morning and was about to make a purchase, but hesitated. Glad I did. If the quality is no longer there, I not going to waste my money.
They look cool, but I found mine just too heavy. I commute by train and end up walking a healthy 6/8 km a day and now use a lightweight north face backpack. My back feels great now. But yes, my briefcase looks cool :-)

Just purchased the Saddleback $315 satchel that fits a laptop perfect and it’s amazing. Custom hides comparable options all run $420+. At least on that product saddleback was better priced and super rugged.

I have the extra large briefcase from Saddleback and I absolutely love it!! I bought it about 7 years ago and I've used it for college. It still looks as good today as the day I bought it. It was pricey, but I feel it was still a great investment.

I bought my Saddleback XL briefcase in 2009. I still love it- it has aged beautifully and I can attest to the durability and craftsmanship having dragged it through canyons and cities alike all over the world. That said, I can't understand the price hikes. I'm priced out. You're assessment is fair. My sister has bought Saddleback in the last couple of years and the product doesn't seem as tough as what I got 10+ years ago.
Generally speaking, you do only have two options, either chrome or veg tanned leather. There are other natural methods. Veg tanned leather is the only real choice for hand tooled anything on your product. Veg tanned leather isn't as soft and supple "out of the box" unless it has been split to a very small weight (thickness) and conditioned heavily. Chrome tanned leather is a garment or upholstery grade leather. For briefcases, it means that the leather is weaker than its veg tanned counterpart.
The chrome tanning process is much harsher on the hide, the result is that the fibers in the hide are much looser (weaker) than their veg tanned counterparts. The chrome tanning process can be highly toxic and the hides themselves can cause irritation if the haven't been properly neutralized at the tannery.
If you have skin issues or tend to sweat a lot, it is probably a good idea to avoid a great deal of exposure to unlined chrome tanned leather. Chrome tanned leathers will damage metal and other materials over time unless the bag is lined with the proper material (holsters and knife sheaths are made with veg tanned leather).
It can be very difficult to determine the difference between chrome tanned and imitation leather. Lined imitation leather is about impossible to to to distinguish from chrome tanned leather. Imitation leather is very weak, buyer beware! The "Real Leather" tag or stamp is completely meaningless, you want full grain or at least top grain leather.
Suede is weaker than top grain leather. The bottom grain fibers are looser than the top grain fibers.
Chrome tanned leather is actually cheaper than veg tanned leather, the beg tanning process is more expensive.
Hand saddle stitched, while expensive, will outlast machine stitched products AND will not unravel if a stitch gets cut.
Another option is to contact a maker in your local market instead of the mass market options. For about the same prices, you can have it made to your specific needs. They can also produce the the matching accessories that can be difficult to find.

Saddleback owner here from back in the day when their shit was still amazing. And I do mean amazing. Mine and my husband’s bags are about 10 years old. I’ve since seen one in the wild about 3 years ago. I immediately recognized the style and got a closer look. Got caught looking so had to comment, hey is that a SBL? Oh yeah they were pleases to be recognized with said monster bag. I was so sad for this person. Comparatively it was crap. Quality of leather just down the shitter. I was also aware they’d really bumped up their pricing structure so was doubly cringing inside knowing this person had forked over a mortgage payment for that crappy ass bag. I’ll forever keep mine. It gets cycled with my others. It and their pricing was what jumped me into making my own leather products. Been at it about as long as I’ve had my SBL and have gotten decent. Enough that family receives nice leather gifts these days. It’s expensive af for a hobby but it’s hella cheaper than therapy!!
I have the SBL tote, can't recall the name, and the big wallet. I purchased both from Dave's deal several years ago. I just purchased the big mouth backpack. I frequent the site regularly, however, the site has fallen off. I don't see the bags I purchased several years back. Actually, I don't see anything that has caught my eye. Now, the site isn't worth visiting. Until they get more items, I'll stay away for a while. Hopefully, Dave watches these videos and go back to how things were.

Purchased a Marlondo after doing tons of research. I asked both companies for information about their leather and watched tons of reviews. Saddleback took about a week to even respond to my questions. The owner of Marlondo contacted me same day and emailed me a very detailed email about their products. I immediately bought their Double Space Briefcase and love it. Great video.

Very much agree with your assessment. Yes, I too wanted one of Saddleback but not any more, too expensive. For my briefcase I have two Hartmann, one 4 inch tradition leather briefcase, the other Hartmann a narrow tweed sided briefcase. Received many compliments on both.
FYI, please I beg you, cut back on the music; it is difficult understanding you over the music. Though I very much think your video’s are extremely informative, the music is a major problem. Now when I see a video you created I start it, when I hear the music I close it down. Mr. Muraski, cut out the music we came to hear you not fight the music.
I definitely understand your points and they are all valid in my opinion. When I started looking for a leather bag I landed on Saddleback and after about a year of research I decided to buy one used off Ebay for half the price of a new one. I must say I think I lucked out with the price and overall quality. That said, I don't see myself ever buying a new full priced product from them.

I bought Saddleback's Classic Briefcase 7-8 years ago. I've used it nearly every day since then, including some pretty rough use and lots of travel, but it still looks great and is in excellent condition. Too bad about the price increase, though. I've never seen a bag I like better, but the Marlondo bags look like they might be a contender.

Hi, I enjoy your videos and I appreciate your opinion on this, but some of the information you provided on the topic seems to be incomplete. I have no affiliation with saddleback, but I'm an engineer and I enjoy doing extensive research before making a purchase!
From my research what you refer to as a "decrease in quality" is a response to early customer complaints that the bags were much too heavy and un-wearable. The leather is still the same quality full grain leather just about 2mm thinner. Also the material of the hardware has been upgraded to (type 304) stainless steel which is substantially more expensive and resistant to corrosion than the nickel plated metal previously used. This combats the thought that there is an attempt to cut costs.
The chrome tanned vs vegetable tanned leather discussion is purely a matter of aesthetic preference. I understand that the owner aesthetically prefers chrome tanned leather, but the company has also recently sold limited runs of vegetable tanned leather bags for prices less than the chrome tanned bags. I'm guessing because the veg tanned bags did not require a pigskin lining.
Also I have found that Saddleback has been transparent about their prices, and the reason for the increase. They provided advanced notice to all customers that the increase was happening. Unfortunately I was not able to save up for a bag before the price increase... but I am glad to know that the majority of their profits go towards ministry and charity work in Rwanda and Mexico.

Saddleback Leather pays their workers better than the average, a living wage , they have child care, schooling for older kids teaching them English, cafeteria , they care for the people that work for them in ways that most companies don't here because of the cost etc. You could look at this as better than foreign aid & it keeps them from becoming illegals here because their lives are exponentially improved over the average.
I understand where this vid is coming from. And I decided that I’m over with Saddleback too but then I saw their Flight Bag just recently and made an order with an early bird discount.
I saw that, and it’s a decent value. Could SBL be getting back to their glory days? I sure hope so.

Is it really true that Saddleback leather is now inferior to what was produced years ago? I have older Saddleback bags purchased from eBay and newer bags as well. Although I like Saddleback I have other products too (SAB, Ghurka). I mention this to show that although I ‘m not committed to Saddleback alone I don’t see the difference in quality others see. What am I missing? Are any of the negative comments based on actual data or just personal impressions? Is Dave really using cheaper leather and hardware?
I haven’t seen a really good side by side comparison with old SBL and new, but the theory of inferior quality is pretty widespread. Back in the glory days of SBL you could really get a nice product for a decent price, and I think this where their brand loyalty comes from. I’d love to hear other people’s experience though, as I can’t really speak to any Saddleback products besides the ones I’ve tried.

After shopping with SBL for over 5 years I have also given up on them. They have priced me out. I have a lot of disposable income but there are better alternatives for lower costs. Also I have been completely unsuccessful in getting a warranty repair done. No return communication from them even. And yes I am the original owner.

I thought this video would offend me --being I own a lot of Saddleback products from briefcases and duffle bags to other accessories. With that said, instead..... I'm grateful you posted these comments.

I like my Saddleback products but am going to consider your recommendations because I don't believe your intention is anything beyond being HELPFUL and HONEST.
So for that, I offer my thanks and compliments for taking the time to share these details.
I don't entirely agree with how Dave is choosing to run Saddleback -- making products in Mexico for example.
I also think you're correct -- the pricing is too high.
However, I do like the style and construction that Saddleback offers.
Lastly, maybe Dave would do better by laying off on the swanky Africa trips, lowering his price points, and decrease his high profit greediness by having more regard for the people paying to support his company.
I will say, if he continues increasing prices, he'll have one less customer with me!

I was in the process to buy saddleback and ready sent an email to them since my hometown not America. Saddleback is my dreamy bag since 2009 back then, but the cost was high for a college student like me, but I still want it and saving some money from my part time job but it still can't buy it. The price is rising from time to time, and when I have much money to finally ready have my dream bag I found your channel. After watching it I turned back and just try to find local craftsman leather on my hometown to custom a bag for me, and also I can help the local economy by buying from them since it still pandemic. I have several items from Saddleback Leather--bought most when it was a decent price (still expensive IMHO) and the prices now are outrageous. Dave must think we are a bunch of idiots. This is a 2 year old video. They've taken heed to some of the criticism and have really improved the leather, namely the DCB color. If you're looking for rugged, SBL is the best there is. You can join a Facebook group and buy used to save some money, or look for a Dave's Deal on their site.

Yea you may get some criticism but you will also gain respect from others for telling it like it is, and that is more important for someone who does these kinds of reviews. I'll take the honest man's opinion any day.

There's nothing wrong with visible imperfections, brands etc. if you like them, as many people will. What is wrong is that using these skins enables SBL to order second grade or third grade skins, which they proceed to sell as top grade, and then at an increased price. I have some old SBL products which I seldom use, because in practise they are very heavy, but I am happy with their quality and finish. Comparing them with the photographs on the site now it is evident that there is a visible reduction in quality as far as finishing is concerned, particularly edge finishing, which seems now to be non-existent. By the way, did SBL always use chrome tanned leather, or did they once use vegetable tanned?
I own many SBL bags and am a fan - that being said... you are right on all points.

Raising prices is not "ripping people off." You are not privy to what expenses they may have had which increased on their end; rent, labor, insurance, new equipment, expansion, loss of supplier, etc. It is a victim mindset to feel this way. The free market, with supply and demand is great because if people pay the price you charge, the market is bearing your pricing structure. You should have bought the bag when it was cheaper rather than insult the company for having a profit-based business. You come off as whining. Not trying to be insulting, just sharing my perspective as you shared yours. Cheers.

Excellent presentation! I bought a briefcase from saddleback, before the price hike and it's ok, but it has some design flaws. Now they're way overpriced, and, as you point out, they're not a luxury brand, not even close. Thanks for the alternative options list.
Great opinion and thoughts. I purchased my saddleback leather large briefcase in 2007 winter for $398 including free shipping. I should've gotten medium size instead of large but back then price difference was mere $50. I still have it and still love it but only for what I paid for. Would I pay $600~$800 for the same bag that I bought? I don't know. I don't think I would if it's twice the price I paid for. I still believe saddleback leather makes great durable well designed product. But I do agree with you on "value" part of the product.

First hand experience here with Ruitertassen (Thanks again!) and the quality is simply amazing. I can't imagine another brand doing it better, and if they did, not enough to justify several hundred dollars more.
Designer and other fashion house brands are a different story, and we can argue forever over whether or not their prices are justified, but if you're a brand going for that bare bones, everyman look, you just have to be more fair in your pricing.

@kshiftkometh yes. I can't believe I paid over $20,000 for their pvc bags. Yes, there's some leather added to their items, but, overall, the Bags are mainly composed of pvc.
The only thing I disagree with is the branding and scars. I know this is super objective but I like the imperfections. Price increasing and quality drop is a huge turnoff though. Your video is spot on
I've been looking for a good quality bag and right now I had been looking between nutsac and saddleback, this is pushing me towards nutsac
I travel a lot - US, Europe, Mexico - by plane, car, train, walking. I have a strong interest in the travel bags I use. I’ve had a chance to own a Saddleback bag and have considered buying more for travel use. Great design, like the color choices, and the associated travel fantasies fed by Dave and buyers add to perceived value. But the reality is they are way to heavy. If you’re 20, lugging the weight is not a problem. But as I aged, I started following the general rule for pack weight which is hump not more than 10% of your body weight. I bought other bags.

It amazing how many people and leather companies have emailed me, thanking me for speaking the truth. A lot of guys don’t want to chance upsetting a company in fear of losing out on “influencer deals”. I have 6 of SBL's products: 2 wallets, 1 notepad holder, Moleskine cover, Bible cover and large front pocket back pack. I have to say that I do like them but 2 things that I don't care for is the weight and the price. I got all of my stuff pre-2015 and I talked myself into spending the money. My wife thought that I was crazy buying that backpack. The 1 product that I considered to be their best product was a small Bible cover with a drawstring but they discontinued it. Now they sell separate books of the Bible as a stitched book, to me, that is just someone trying to make a few dollars... or a lot of dollars. I use to brag on them but most people I know, can't afford their products.

I have a few pieces from them…back when their briefcases were lined with pig skin…more than 10 years old. The water bag I’ve used a lot although it’s heavy. I think I paid 5 something for it. I have their huge book bag too. The beast? Very impractical, heavy, etc. When I first shopped with them the prices were comparable to other leather goods stores or maybe a bit less … Compton colonel Littleton for example. Now their prices are not justifiable for me either. Although I have to say that a lot of leather goods makers I was shopping had a HUGE spike in their prices during the pandemic…increases of 50% or more. Not sure why.

Not only is the bags are poorly made, the site hardly has anything worth buying. What happened to most of the items? The site looks a lil naked. However, I've recently purchased the big mouth backpack. I hope I haven't wasted $599 on a bag that's poorly made.

Colonel Littleton bags are outstanding. I have two of them from years ago, and they look great, have weathered incredibly well, I have one for 17 years. However, the prices are crazy high. If I am going to pay as much as Saddleback charges, I'd get American Made.

I own many Saddleback pieces. I have a large classic briefcase in coffee brown, a satchel in tobacco, a big leather wallet in tobacco and an old bull belt in black. I bought all these before that price increase. Even then, I hummed and hawed quite a bit, trying to find alternatives (read cheaper) bags elsewhere. However, back then (we're talking about 5-6 years ago) there were none. At least, none that I knew of. Even Saddleback was hardly known. I was thinking of buying a leather backpack. I want to thank you for turning me onto Marlondo bags. They are beautiful, use better leather and have that rugged styling that I like. My next leather piece will not be a Saddleback. I love my Saddleback pieces, but they were expensive, even then, and that price hike across the board did leave a very bitter taste in my mouth. Like everything else, popularity and demand raised the prices, and seemingly, drove down the quality as well.
It sounds like you got in while it was still good, but I agree with you about Marlondo. Plus the fact that they offer vegetable tanned and buffalo leather now as an option is really enticing. In fact I just ordered a single space briefcase in tobacco veg tan for myself!
Saddleback Leather is great but I still don't know why they still changed their leather to the thinner version and bumped their price a lot.

Very simple. They want to make more money by giving you lower leather and charge you a higher price. Saddleback leather company is a joke.
Full grain leather when thinner doesn't always mean cheaper or weaker integrity.
The bags with full grain thick leather are heavy. And to use grain corrected leather which has had the imperfections removed and is thinner makes for a product that people want. As to the price increase. Well they realized people will pay the upcharge. Have you seen the price on 6" boots lately? A boot chicago company who outsources their boots charges what Nicks charges for fire jumper boots.

The White Boot company in Spokane Washington, has been making smoke jumper boots for probably 150+ years. My father bought a pair from the man that owned the company- Otto White. They have been rebuilt a few times. Even rebuilt to fit me. They are 70 years old, and have been taken care of. I rarely wear them, as I don't fight fires in North Carolina. When dad was around, and we lived out there,;that was the best boot to actually work in, that this country made. Many , many makers have copied Otto's designs. They came with a stacked heel on them, that looked a bit strange. Once you wore the boot awhile, you understood the heel had a purpose, totally unrelated to " looks" . They became comfortable to wear.. When Otto died, he left the company to the existing employees. I can't speak about today's operation at all. Simply because I have no contact. It may be exactly the same folks, getting to own some of the company by being a tenured employee.
I can also speak some about Obenauf's Leather oils, and their heavier stuff. It is all non toxic, made from natural preservatives. Why is that important ? The lady that is part owner, said she gets calls all the time , from folks in a panic , that say the dog found an open can, or jar, and ate some of it. It doesn't hurt the dog. No need to go to the vet. It will "pass through the dog" . The company is located out West ( Idaho) where they really have fires. Their products are for leather that spends it's life in Mud, rain, deep ashes. It keeps the leather from drying out, and cracking.
Finally, I have never worked for either company, and do not have friends there. I am offering truthful information, based upon my experience. I have put Obenauf's on leather hats, on expensive motorcycle jackets. ( Yes, I am a biker , since 1970) . gloves, shoes. For me, their stuff works. I am not someone that worries about impressing others. I just want the product to do what it states it will do--- Both Obenauf's, and White's boots. When my White boots were purchased, they only had one "grade" of boot. Today, I think they have more than one grade. I can tell you that mine are heavy. They are heavy when brand new. Incidentally, they make their best boot, to fit YOUR foot, not someone else's foot. They use to have you make a pattern of both of your feet. So it is normal for them to make two different sized boots, if your feet are different sized. Seriously. Who else does that , with work boots.?
The wax-like Obenauf's is essentially the same thing as the heavy oil. It just goes on like paste car wax. In the sun, for awhile, it soaks into the leather. Feel free to be critical. Best of luck.
You can't get real full grain leather without some scarring and marks - if you want a clean perfect surface that's personal preference and theres nothing wrong with that. However, coming from a leatherworker, I personally love those marks. They are part of the life of the animal that your bag came from and I see that as a beautiful thing. Also, just because they chrome tan their leather doesn't mean it's so much worse than veg tanned leather - both will last your entire life if not longer if done right.
I do agree with many of your points about SBL as a business but some of your points were just very specific preferences about what you want in leather and people should be able to maked up their own minds about those kinds of things.
You’re right, full grain does have its imperfections and as a leatherworker I’m sure you know that the hides are given a grade based on their imperfections. This is why companies like Marlondo offer their imperfect hide bags at a steep discount, and as you said there is a market for it. I’d just prefer to have a blank canvas for my own patina, the same reason I don’t care for pre-distressed jeans.
Looking back I did neglect to mention the advantages of chrome tanning over vegetable tanning and wish I had. Remember that the name of this video is why I’ll never buy anSaddleback briefcase and all of these reasons are my own preferences. There’s something about vegetable tanned leather I love- the way it breaks in, the way it darkens and carmelizes with use, the way the edges can be burnished. To me it’s the best thing until I can afford a shell cordovan bag! These are all just personal preferences, and I’m happy to discuss the pros and cons with people who understand the medium of leather such as yourself.
What I’m not tolerant of is price gouging and cash grabbing tactics that prey on people who buy a product based on a name brand they trust. This video isn’t for anyone who’ve already drank the SBL cool-aid, it’s for those who are trying to choose the best value and get the best bang for their buck.

Just because soething is given a grade based on visual impurities, though, does not necissarily mean that the leather itself suffers in quality - branding and scarring do not hurt the integrity of the leather. But you're right, at the end of the day it's how you use the leather, whether including imperfections or using clean surface. With jeans it's the same way, although I wouldn't consider scarring equivalent to pre-destress, it would be more like buying a bag that already had patina. The price gauging is not the right way, there should be more transparency maybe about their decisions regarding those prices. I have never bought or used a SBL product, and likely won't, but I do think that there are much worse businesses haha.

I'm a leathersmith and veg tan is the only way to go, it is fully customizable for color and much more. As far as marks, stretch marks are one thing, but the range marks (brands and such) are only included if they are requested!!! I talk at length with my clients and take several weeks just to design exactly what they would like. Yes, real handmade, leather bags are expensive they can take 100s of hours to make (especially if they are hand cut and sewn)... But if you are working with the right leathersmith, you will get everything you want, and amazing quality!
It’s funny watching this video now. Price seemed to be the biggest complaint and many of these other brands you recommend have risen their prices quite a bit as well. I think you were mostly mad that they increased their prices. The differences in percentages had a lot to do with things like the complexity to build, the fact that they use such large, singular pieces means they may waste a lot of the hide and they weren’t running their business well. Dave even admitted as much. They weren’t in a good spot to continue growing and meeting the demands. He probably could have risen the prices in a better way that wouldn’t have been such a shock, but it made sense looking back.
As for aesthetics, the branding/scar look is desirable by many, myself included. It’s rare to find this as many leather products are made to be 100% uniform and to do that there’s a lot of processing. These marks make the bag 100% unique. The integrity of the leather isn’t impacted, so why not if you like it.
Finally of chrome vs veg, I, like you, used to think one was better than the other. That isn’t quite true. Chrome tanned is quicker but that isn’t always what makes the total cost (unless you do nothing more). The final finish can have a large impact on the total cost. But chrome leather isn’t technically inferior. I personally like veg, but there many instances where veg isn’t going to be the best choice of leather. Just depends on the project and what you’re going for.
Finally, does saddleback use the best leather? No. It’s good but it’s pretty raw and unfinished. That’s intentional and adds to the look. They’ve made some stuff in veg (I have a fpbc in veg) and personally I think for their designs, especially when using the dusty carbon and good tobacco, the chrome works better.
Overall, I think sbl is pretty good. I have a few from them and a few from other companies. I can’t say one is better than the other as they’re all different. I think they’re a little overpriced, but not too far off.
You did piss me off... but the more I learn you are right. I love having a brand or stretch marks on the bag, doesn’t bother me one bit, but you shouldn’t pay extra for it, you should pay less. You are also right about vegetable tan. I learned that after getting into leatherworking myself. Thanks for your research, maybe Dave will pull his head out and fix it. Much love for him and all he has done.

For what its worth, I just bought my wife a large tote bag from Basader. It's going to be tan Essex leather with purple edges, and made entirely by one woman in New Hampshire for under $300.00!
I have a few Saddleback bags and I think they’re great and can be really good value for money-if you buy the right one. The briefcases are a bit much, but I have some of their more entry bags, and their veg tan Flight Bag (which was in the 600s and totally worth it, the veg tan leather they use is amazing and it doesn’t have as many of the extra D-rings and stuff you see on most SBL bags), but I definitely agree that they’re not always a good value. Once you get over $600, I don’t think you really have to consider that you’re getting chrome tanned instead of veg tanned and it makes a difference. Right now, I just got a Cravar bag and it’s been a revelation. I have an FC15 and it’s incredible, easily comparable to SBL bags that are $2-300 more. In short, I think SBL makes a great bag, but it’s certainly not for everyone.
I think the biggest issue with SBL, though, isn’t the cost of the bags or the fact they use chrome instead of veg or that they have those jangly D-rings or that they’re heavy, it’s that they’re just not managed that well as a company. The price increase you’re talking about came out of nowhere, and then down the line they lowered some prices, then raised them, and they just did another adjustment a few months ago. They just don’t seem to have a good idea of what’s going on in an administrative sense. And right now, I think their bags just aren’t very creatively designed at the moment. Each new bag seems like a variation on what they already make. They made a Grandfather case, which is basically a small version of their hard side suitcase, so they made that in a bunch of sizes. Then the front door bag….it seems like their last big piece of innovation was the Gladstone opening Flight Bag and then they made a couple versions of basically that bag in different sizes, the front door bag is a variation. Now, compared to Marlondo, I think I’d go for SBL every time, Marlondo’s construction doesn’t seem to be on the same level as SBL’s. But now that I know about Cravar, Satchel and Page, and Bleu de Chauffre, it’s hard to think I’ll go back to SBL any time soon.

After rummaging through the site, I still want a few more, but am extremely hesitant from all the negative feedback recently. Sb are pretty, but just way too heavy for practical everyday use imho
For these prices, I'd expect them to atleast provided recessed stitching so that the stitches do not rub and get cut from surface exposure. Nope. At least they use sail thread instead of leather sewing thread. Would also expect the briefcases to be cloth lined with foam padding so as to provide cushioning impact for electronics, burnished leather edges, brass or steel eyelets for the steel tongue to fit through instead of just a leather holes punched....nope.
You just declared that vegie tan is better because its "natural" and "takes longer". Both of those points are irrelevant to the final quality of the product. Does Chrom vs Vegie cause color bleed over time on the objects the leather regularly rubs against? Will I have stains on my cotton clothing at some point from use? Does the leather coloring fade faster for Chrome vs Vegie? Does the leather degrade faster? Etc. That's what determines quality of a final product. Not how "natural" the process is or how long it took.
I make custom leather goods. I don't even try to compete with foreign made leather goods due to I am a 1 man shop & I cannot buy the materials at the cost that the big companies do. I also do everything by hand with the exception of stitching. And I do offer hand stitching at an additional cost. I also will not try to compete with the foreign labor wages. But I always use top grade leather. Top grade leather will be very clean leather & not have any brands & crap like that on a side of leather. If there were a brand on it I would cut it out & throw it aside. I always give a customer the best leather available as I would want it myself. Brands may look ok to some but most don't want them. That is just screwing the customer forcing them to buy products with brands. That would be used only if someone ask for it in a custom made good. Brands are usually on 2nd & 3rd grades of leather which is a cheaper priced leather.
I’d rather pay 100$ for a belt that’s infinitely replaceable then pay quadruple that over the next 20 years
The SBL belts are beast. You don't wear that belt, it wears you.
Hanks belts are even better for less money.

As far as leather jackets go I'm partial to Himel Brothers Leather, but I was also really impressed by a jacket from The Real McCoy I tried recently. A bit more affordable is Schott Bros. NYC, and the leather jackets from Satchel and Page (which fit a bit on the slim side). Finally, I've heard nothing but good things about the leather jackets from Wested Co. but haven't tried them for myself yet. I hope this helps!

I’ve owned SBL bags for 10 years now. One consideration that bears mentioning - they offer a 100 year warranty on their products. I’ve used their repair service (no charge, and they paid for shipping) for a backpack strap that came apart due to metal fatigue. What I got back was even better than the original. So this may be a ‘buy once, cry once’ type of situation. My $0.02
Saw one. Thought I'd like one. Saw the video on the build. Realized I could make my own for 1/4 the cost. So I did. Now we make our own bags. Funny thing about the brands, my wife adores those, I prefer clean nice veg tan hides.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Bought Satchel and Page based on one of your other reviews and couldn’t be happier. Using distressed parts of leather remind me of those cheap leather briefcases in airline magazines that use scraps to construct the product.

How much mileage do you have on their pieces?
Ever use one of their briefcases or canvas tool bags daily for years?
I have Galco holsters and Tucker Saddles that I have used for decades and this Saddleback stuff is comparable in quality.
As are the options I mentioned, for less money. It’s a question of value.
I’ve had a Galco shoulder holster failure; given enough time even iron will wear through. Show me a Custom Hide briefcase which failed before it’s Saddleback counterpart and I’ll eat my words.

I agree with you on a lot of things and most of them can't be disputed. But what brings people to buy certain products is people buy what they like. Not getting down into numbers or where it's made from but the bottom line is Dave have products people like. It's no different from what Apple computer company is doing. You have a lot of great computers companies out there but Apple seems to catch the buyers eye with their products. I particular like Saddleback Mountainback line. Again, a lot of good companies out there produce canvas and leather products (backpacks in this case) that's a third of the cost than Saddleback. I just so happen like Saddleback better not to mention the 100-year warranty I as of yet to find with other companies. Thanks for the video.
Very good points and well stated. One thing I'd like to add is that this 100 year warranty is simply a good catch phrase and marketing tool. Chances are that SBL won't even be around in 100 years and I don't see how this is much superior to a lifetime warranty. I get what they're after though, and it gets the point across nicely.
I'm not sure about the quality of saddle back and don't own any of their products. I stumbled upon them on UA-cam and found that guy to be very douchy. I totally agree with you regarding the prices, considering he's not using that great leather (but claiming he is) and using cheap labour from Mexico. There are so many other great leather craftsmen out there who do everything themselves and by hand. We got to support them instead.
I purchased their older style extra large brief case about 7/8 years ago as one of Dave's deals. I think I paid $478. Id call it a saddle bag with a handle, and straps.
Sounds like you got a smokin deal!!! If the prices were still in that range I’d reassess my opinion of SBL. My objection is less with the product and more with the business practices.

Wow, very excellent points! I chose Saddleback as a top quality briefcase company I would later buy when I am further in my career and making more money, but your arguments have definitely made me rethink that!
Totally hear you on the price, but can ANYONE right now find a duffel or briefcase made with the quality that Saddleback puts out? The stainless is the best. The thread is the best. The leather is the best… I dunno..I’m just saying I’m a total leather snob and I haven’t found anything that beats the quality of SBL
Carl, have you ever looked at this site: www.colonellittleton.com ? He also has a huge following, people pay tons of money for his products, made in the USA, and he has a whole niche for people who actually want to buy leather with brands, marks, etc.... While it seems like it might be cutting costs, there is also an appeal (for some people) to get exactly that type of look. I agree with you regarding Saddleback though; made in Mexico where labor is much cheaper and I seriously doubt he is paying his workers much more than the going rate while he is raking in the dough for himself. And I am sure someone has already commented that one can purchase quality leather products in Mexico for a hell of a lot less money!
I have seen their stuff, and while it's not my thing I can certainly understand the appeal. Plus I appreciate the made in USA aspect, at least we can assume the people making Colonel Littleton goods are treated fairly.

Customhide is a really a wonderful company and represents a great value for what you are getting. For me, made in America of inferior quality is shameful but made in America with craftsmanship deserves recognition . MANY companies now just leave the edge of the leather unfinished or coat it with a rubber liquid which over time cracks and looks ugly. The edges of Customhide products are fully leather wrapped and this takes not only more time sewing and skiving (thinning) the leather but also enhances both durability and aesthetics. The best leathergoods company in the past 30 years has always been Ghurkha by Marley Hodgson. His products represent the best combination of savoire faire from design, durability to aesthetics. Customhide may very well be following in that tradition. Made in America, made to last.
Agreed, of all the bags I've tested the Custom Hide is my favorite. It combines the best of all the things I like at a reasonable price, and might very well be the best deal going at the moment!
I purchased 2 Sbl bags, 1 wallet and coin purse from dave deals. I'm glad I purchased them 5 or more years ago when the bags still had the removable pig skin liner. I was looking at their site this morning and was about to make a purchase, but hesitated. Glad I did. If the quality is no longer there, I not going to waste my money.
They look cool, but I found mine just too heavy. I commute by train and end up walking a healthy 6/8 km a day and now use a lightweight north face backpack. My back feels great now. But yes, my briefcase looks cool :-)
I know you most likely won't see this but do you know about the quality of buffalo jackson? They seem to be high quality but I can't find much on them.

Just purchased the Saddleback $315 satchel that fits a laptop perfect and it’s amazing. Custom hides comparable options all run $420+. At least on that product saddleback was better priced and super rugged.
