You got to hand it to this guy. He is advertising his product, showing the complexity and detail put into making it, educating on how to find a fake, insulting forgers and daring forgers to copy his design all at the same time... thats pretty freakin clever.

Dave here. Thank you for the kind words. It took a lot of thinking on this to figure it out. I was wanting to tell on the knocker offers and also wanted to highlight the details that go into quality that most people would never know. Seemed to be the perfect mix

There is so much sass in this video. I love it. And as a leathersmith, it was great to get a look at how the Saddleback bags are made, and I picked up some good tips. I'm making a similar briefcase for my dad, but I'm not planning on taking the shortcuts!

I'm a leather worker too, but I just make bags for myself and my wife. It seems we have similarly exacting quality standards. I'm into my latest leather backpack for a little over 40 hours. Every hole I punch myself and every stitch I sew by hand with two needles.
Quality like ours is truly something worth the investment.
I'll be taking my pack to Nepal next year. It's a bag I plan to give to a child my wife and I haven't had yet.
I've looked through so many of your photos and videos for inspiration and tips. Not to cut corners, but to find great design tips. You really do set the bar properly high for quality.
    Well done!

Oh my LORD!! Award of the Year to the Marketing Campaigner for this video. I have always loved your videos Dave and your sort of no-frills, take-it-or-leave-it ho-hum approach to each presentation but this one...this my friend takes the cake. This video is absolutely ingenious. Love your swag and love you...keep 'em coming my Christian brother. I am still cracking up while typing this. "You can even nickel plate your crackpipe." and "you will end up saving more money than you will ever make from those gold fillings and the jewelry you get from digging up those graves." Priceless!

I came across this video while researching different leather qualities in regards to shoe manufacturing. It convinced me to buy some belts from Saddleback, and now I own a tobacco brown 4-stitch and a chestnut tow-belt. The customer service rep on the phone mentioned this would be the last belt I ever purchase, to which I replied, "well I doubt it, I still have to buy a dark brown and black one."
Super happy with the quality and they look good with a pair of slacks or jeans.

I have never posted a comment on UA-cam before seeing this video. I absolutely love your approach to dealing with people knocking off your work by calling out what goes into making an expensive designer bag. I have tried explaining this to people before but this video is perfect. From now on, I will just refer people to this video.

As someone just scratching the surface of leatherwork, I found your video both amusing and helpful at the same time. I like the very tongue-in-cheek comments that go with everything.
The people that want to pay extra for the quality will always pay that bit more than people that want something that looks nice but won't last the distance.

I really love this reaction to a knockoff of your high-end product. Well handled; the snark is spread thinly enough over a genuinely interesting How It's Made kinda vibe that it doesn't come off as overly frustrated or bitter, which it easily could. I may never own a Saddleback Leather bag (too heavy for my screwed-up shoulders) but I totally respect this brand and its integrity.

I just bought my husband a wallet from this company, not 10 minutes ago and I feel 1000X better (I already felt great) about my purchase. I happened upon this company cruising for an anniversary present for my 3rd anniversary (we like the traditional gifts) and the way everything is designed and the stories behind everything earned my respect. I'm saving money to afford one of their bags. I'm not a typical female who has a ton of handbags and shoes, I'm just not into that lifestyle. I want something I can go on adventures with, something I can give to my children when it's their turn to travel and go on adventures.

I just bought a “doctors” bag (who has time for that much school?). Got to love this video and the guys attitude. It’s done in such a unique way to see every bit of care and money into these. Yes you need to make a profit, that’s a business, but you got to invest in quality. Society has ditched quality for that 6-month longevity. I want to own this 20-years from now. Now I’ve got the wallets, bags, I really just want to keep buying stuff from this guy. Maybe I’ll enter a contest. I never grew up around leather, but now that I have it, it’s incredible.

When we go into business making things we love, the last thing we(i)think of is that people will steal your designs and pass them off as their own.
I make kites. Once in Columbia, years ago, I was explaining to a flier that my kites fly a bit different from the current market batch.
The flier told me, 'oh, we all learned to fly on Jordan's.......'
Strange, I thought, I've only ever sold one to one Columbian. . . .
Turned out, the flier was right. He'd copied them right down to the signature. Had him a great little business.
      So, yes, it's not.

Hey, I absolutely LOVED this "how to knock off" video. I build custom furniture and run into this same mentality all the time. We live in a society where there are too many who are willing to rip off their fellow man in any way they can. The sad thing is that the customer hasn't educated themselves and sometimes think they are getting "something for nothing" when they are just getting royally ripped off.
    Keep up the good work.

I will likely be moving in about 6 months so I began a search for a leather bag, one that will likely last for subsequent travels around the world - one that I might be able to pass on to my son. Because I repair houses, I appreciate good construction. True I often balk on the price the first time. Then I buck up, save my money and later buy the item in question. I plan to be buying your duffel bag in the near future! Totally dug this vid!

"You can even Nickel plate your crack pipe." Best line EVER. Been looking for a new bag to replace my leather satchel I've had for about 20 years. It's just not big enough anymore and I love all the storage you have managed to put into your bags. This video sold me. Best marketing video I've ever seen. One that both showed in detail how your product is designed and utterly destroyed the knock off artists out there. Only bad thing is, they are dumb enough to actually belive you want to help them and probably show this as an instructional video to all the children that make their bags.

Great video that helped educate me but ultimately led me to choose a different bag... other ways to save/make money: chrome tan for hours vs. vegetable tan for weeks, try to market the imperfections in the hides (scars, brands, etc.) vs. incurring the cost of avoiding them, use steel hardware vs. brass, use cheaper rivets, form your handle with plastic vs. leather, oh, and double your prices while reducing your quality. Great looking bags that are things of beauty, but do your research folks, and make an informed decision. Lots of videos out there explaining how this company cuts corners with respect to their product, notwithstanding the smugness, marketing, and pricing.

***** Not so simple. He lived in Mexico. He sought out a craftsman to create a bag he designed for himself. Other people liked it, so he had more made- etc., etc., and a business was born. Not a classic offshore scenario. He's clearly providing quality work for people in Mexico, meaning they won't be desperate to cross the border looking for work.

Oh man, I love, absolutely LOVE the little jabs you put in during the process. "Nickle plated crack pipe" brilliant.
It makes me want to buy one out of principle now.

One way to really save money on your knockoff bags is go ahead and get the labor done in Mexico. :)

I've done little projects with people in countries known for cheap labour. It adds a lot of extra work. Not so keen on that anymore.

This was a great video because I want to work in leather not to sell or knock off someone's design/work but to expand my skill set. This showed me how to, even though it will cost more, make quality items using quality materials.

You make the best leather gear I've seen so far. I'm a very picky bugger. Perfectionist by nature, Tool Maker Machinist by trade, among several other "maker" type skills. Beautiful work. This is something I would like to step into.

I love this video. Not just because it's about a great product but even more so from the pure salesmanship demonstrated in it. I work for a custom manufacturer and compete against "knock offs" of our products and this is a great tact to take. Thank you!

Saddleback Leather This video is hilarious. I recently got the "simple" [largely understated] backpack as a graduation gift. This is hands down the best piece of anything that I've ever owned. A buddy of mine saw my bag at a rehearsal and said "hey I used to have a bag like that"...I laughed and showed him this video, it wasn't quite "like that" as he initially stated. Anywho, this bag is awesome, your company is awesome, once I finish selling the rest of these nickel plated crack pipes, I'm definitely buying another bag.
Keep up the amazing quality work, you're doing.

I just ordered a bag from Saddleback today, I cant wait to get it. I wanted a bag my kids would eventually want. Super excited to get my bag! The owner seems like a good guy so happy to buy a product from them! My wife knew I wanted a leather bag and bought me a Coach messenger bag, though it looked nice, this Saddleback looks way better and durability to withstand me... I hope it's worth the anticipation when I receive it!!
