- These are a few of my favorite high note alternate fingerings!
First we discuss those best known to the flute world at large, to bring down pitch in loud or aggressive playing for these notes:
High E, F, F#, G#, A
(and also, check in with your high B-flat fingering, please!)
Then I remind everyone to consider using harmonic fingerings especially at the 5th/12th, as well as octave.
Finally we look at fingerings to help with soft dynamics and tapers for these notes:
C and C# above the staff, D, E, F, F#, A, B-flat
There are many other great alternate fingerings out there, and we'll come back for them. Leave your favorites in the comments! For now, this video was getting long enough!

I loved the note about the difference in the flute tube and the piccolo tube when thinking of the high G# fingering.
adding the trill key for the high E is the best!
Very useful.....just need to remember and not get mixed up!
Other weird fingering I found a while ago for the high Eb/D#: Th. 1 2 3 . G# | tr1 tr2 . Eb. Very good for going to and from B6 very quickly, and pretty stable for soft tapers as well (although that isn't a huge problem for the normal fingering).
A great collection of advice here!
These are SO helpful! Going to be watching this video again and memorizing those fingerings. Excited to use them in ensembles!
I learned B flat wrong so I'm still trying to break that habit. I will definitely use these alternate fingerings!
very nice! Thank you for sharing!
I'm so glad you told us these all, because it will be nice to have a list of them while practicing!
Thanks, great video! 👏👏👏
Loved the 70's Motown groove at the beginning!
Would love to see fingerings for 4th octave too.
Very valuable video!
well done!
Oh my heck, I've been playing high Bb wrong my whole life! Thanks for the reminder!
Me too! AHHHHH!!!!
I didn't know that about high Bb; it looks like I'm one of the ones who learned it wrong. Thank you for mentioning that one!!
Happens to a lot of people! It will be a hassle to get used to the change... but will be worth it. Good luck!
Great channel!🌷
Thank you, that is so helpful!
So glad it's helpful!
This is a great informative video, but I would like to suggest that, for future videos, when showing fingerings, could you move the camera closer se we can see it better? Try framing your face and flute in the whole frame. Better yet you could edit in the close up fingerings, but I know that is more work. Happy fluting!
when a video for the thrills in high register? :)
This is so helpful, thank you!! Which high D fingering would you recommend (options for C foot and for B foot) for the end of the Godard Waltz please? And also any tips on how to get them to come out at all, when playing so high? Thanks!
Hello Doctor 😘
Hello there! 😀
