Live radio show: Flute Music of Miguel del Aguila - Northwest Focus Live on Classical KING FM 98.1
I'm very pleased to post this live radio broadcast with generous permission from Classical KING FM 98.1 in Seattle. You'll hear Miguel del Aguila, composer and pianist, performing with myself (flute). Dave Beck is our radio show host.
The broadcast occurred November 22, 2024, live in the Speight Jenkins Studio at the Seattle Opera Center. We enjoyed having a studio audience at full capacity for the space. Word is that roughly 15,000 tuned in to listen during the course of the broadcast.
One note: I was introduced during the broadcast with slightly outdated info that had been handed to our host, as Professor of Flute at Brigham Young University. That was true until 2022, but it's no longer my position. I quit in order to have more time to do projects just like this one! I never felt I had a great opening to correct that tangential info quickly... live, on air.... and hadn't known I'd be introduced that way. But I don't want to be an imposter; Christina Castellanos is now the full-time flute professor at BYU. :)
Miguel del Aguila's music is well worth exploring! Find more of it here:

Happy Birthday, NADIA BOULANGER! - Flute Tube, Episode 97
Переглядів 5083 місяці тому
In today's special Monday edition of Flute Tube, I tell three stories about Nadia Boulanger that I learned directly from some of her students. As I mention in the video, the music you hear is a famous Nocturne by Nadia's sister, Lili. It was originally written for violin and piano. It works extremely well on the flute. The piano part is missing in my casual birthday recording for today, of cour...
Make Music HARDER To Make It EASIER?! Music Practice Hack - Flute Tube, Episode 96
Переглядів 6283 місяці тому
Are we supposed to Make Difficult Music EASY, as I claimed in an earlier Flute Tube episode? (Found here: ua-cam.com/video/UPgfirFUcBc/v-deo.html) Or should we Make Music HARDER To Make It EASIER, as I claim in today's video? Hmmm... I'd say that both of those statements are true! Why Your Brain Should Always Lead the Way - WITH HORSES!! - Flute Tube Note
Переглядів 4615 місяців тому
The more, different ways musicians use to learn and memorize our music, the better. We all learn using slightly different methods. We rely, to different extents, on muscle memory, aural feedback, visual memory, and other means, depending on our aptitudes and backgrounds. BUT!!! Your brain should ALWAYS lead the way!! Just remember the horse analogy! During live lessons, I most often give the ad...

Flute Arpeggios, from Basics to Brilliance! - Flute Tube, Episode 95
Переглядів 1 тис.7 місяців тому
Today we go through a set of FOUR arpeggios that I often have my students practice. I tell you what they are.... and I also give you some tips for better practice. If you get used to fingering in the ways that I suggest here, it might at first take patience and a bit of obstinacy to develop new habits. But in the end, your arpeggios will be cleaner, and faster, and IMPRESSIVE! :) 0:00 Get used ...

I've been playing my flute for months and suddenly the only 2 notes I can play are B and C. There must be a screw or spring out of place. Can you direct me on repairing it. Thank you.
The triplet hack for the 32nd notes before 14 is genius!! Instantly fixed my issue. Proves it's definitely mental! :)
Wow beautiful collaboration ❤🎉🎉🎉
So beautiful !!
Thanks for listening! It is very appealing music 🙂
Fantastic suggestion - going to try it next time I practice
B FLAT GOLD! 😃
I can't wait to try this one!

Virtuoso flutist demonstrating to us how it's done.❤❤❤ Fantastic duet!!👏👏👏👍
Thank you, and I have plenty to learn from you as well, of course! 🙂🎻❤
simply amazing skills, and great performance
Thank you so much 😀
Wow, this is so beautiful! Is it wrong that I feel like I just discovered a new Mozart piece for flute??
Thank you! And not at all - it is that same style and time period as Mozart, and he wasn't the ONLY one alive then who could write appealing music!
@@AprilClaytonflute So interesting in that I as well feel that the very opening of the movement could be Mozart!
Yes, I agree, sounds very similar!
Lovely 👏. Your timbre in the higher notes is like a chinchilla wrapped in soft warm towels in the middle of a luxury spa, cozily getting pampered. In comparison, mine is like a prickly wet cold rat angrily plotting a cunning plan.
Hahaha, what a funny comment! It's so creative it makes me think your flute playing must have much to recommend it! Also, I should add your comment to reviews on my website - would probably be the best one there.😆
😂😂 and I get to hear this cuddly chinchilla sound all the time, she’s my teacher.
Aren't we both lucky to know about my chinchilla sound? 😂😂
Sounds (and looks) great. Funny watching modern cityscape in the background while listening to elegant music from the 18th century.
Thanks! And it is an interesting juxtaposition - too bad we can't go to Devienne's time and place to try it there 🙂
Lol this popped up for me randomly, but I used to play flute for 5 years during middle and highschool and I still have my flute and I'm 33 now. I wish i could still play like i used to. I had a few bad seizures in 2018 and since then my memory is so bad now. My flute needs to be tweaked and tuned and cleaned thoroughly though since it's sat for 15 years now lol Anyways....lol
It's a sign! You should play your flute again!!! 😄😍🎵
😏😏My sinusitis problems , teach, will have none of it, but I will press on. Oh, that was a nice excerpt at the end. What is the piece called?
Teacher, are they calling it circular breathing/air???🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Amazing lesson 👏👏👏
Thank you! 😃
I have had a lot of vocal/ singing sessions. Some of these techniques were even used in those sessions. Perhaps taking singing classes and as well as aerobics, which I need to get back into, could possibly help us aspiring flutists.🤔🤔🤔🤔. 👍😎. Aerobics and talking/counting takes a lot of disciplining of air expenditure.😁😁😁😁😁
Thanks for covering notes higher than the standard notes. How much should the embouchure be covering the lip plate/ embouchure hole, teach? 🤔🤔. I have hit C4----F4, but with no consistency. C4 was much more consistent out of all. The others would toggle all over the place on the tuner. I have been trying to diagnose it during my target practices.
Thanks for the comment! I can say, I certainly remember HOURS spent working on getting that high, high F out when I was first learning the Ibert flute concerto. I was DETERMINED to go up to that highest F at the end of the 3rd movement - just like I'd heard Galway do! In general, people tend to cover the embouchure hole more than they should way up there. Placement should be very similar to the notes right below (the high B-flat, B, C). The air speed is what's most crucial, and to get the speed you need a very small aperture open between your lips. Also, the air needs to zoom STRAIGHT across the embouchure hole in your flute as much as possible - not be angled down into it much at all - more simply STRAIGHT across, like a little laser! Good luck and happy flute practice!
@@AprilClaytonflute Thanks a million, teacher!!! You are awesome!!!👍😎 Armed with this, I can say that part of my problem is that I am making my aperture too small ( The occasional and unfortunate face/lip farting takes place.) and also not a consistent and solid even flow of air support, since it is wavering or not stable between pitches on the tuner. Gotta also check my air direction as well. Sometimes, I try moving up and down the air stream while playing and seeing where I can fish out the pitch as I am carefully watching the tuner so that way I then can try to keep it stable if I catch.
Good luck! I should probably make a disclaimer about my advice, like I've seen other youtubers do in other subjects: "I do not know your flute situation, and this is not flute advice" etc :D but it sounds most likely that this is indeed about a steady airstream and fast air. If so, you could go back and watch my video on "Building Better Breath Support" - Episode 5. If I were asked to boil Flute Tube down to the one most crucial episode, I would say that one is it.
@@AprilClaytonflute Thanks, teach. I will check out that class video 😁😁😁😁😁!!!
Great, I hope it's useful!
Great demonstration! Happy Halloween!
Thanks, same to you!
What an incredible and moving lesson as always, April❢ So lively, heartfelt, sensitive, brilliant and interesting. Very well done. Keep your talented job. Have a nice weekend and good luck.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Your friend Satoru
Thanks, Satoru!
Hello! I already put this in the video description. But just in case you look here but not there, I will repeat here as well: Importantly (and to get into nerdy details), this high C-sharp fingering is a chameleon because our modified, closed-G Böhm system flutes have a DUPLICATE G-sharp key! One standard high C-sharp fingering opens ONE of our duplicate G-sharp keys; the other opens BOTH, instead. Venting both G-sharp keys honestly makes the high C-sharp speak a tiny little bit better. But since with either fingering at least one G-sharp key will stand open - regardless of whether or not you press down your left-hand fourth finger - it is nearly completely irrelevant whether or not you push down that finger. I hope this makes sense! I've included a video card at the end of this video that links to an earlier one: "The Fascinating History of Your G-sharp Key," to provide a bit more clarity - for those who want to get flute-nerdy like me. 🙂
Thanks for the info! I already always wondered what that key was for.
A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Thank You For The Ads On UA-cam!
With all of the political ads etc these days - I thought the world could really use a Flute Ad!!!!! 😂🎵🎶
Amazing! Thank you for sharing your experiencie!! When you opened your sinus cavities reminded me of the sound of James Galway! Hugs from Argentina
Thanks for the nice comment! I like it that finding space inside of us to resonate really is scientific - it makes logical sense, and it also makes a DIFFERENCE to our sound!
I thought it was the Harmonica or the guitar 🎸😊. We learn new things every day.😊
😃👍🎸
You are a witch of marketing, but you don't convinced me
Hi April, I am adult learner. I love all your teaching videos, but sometimes I miss little bit of music theory. Could you please recommend few practical Music Theory books? 🙏🙏
April, your UA-cam lessons are so informative and inspiring for a self-taught flautist that I am. Thank you so much for your posting.
You're most welcome! Thanks for leaving the nice comment, and good luck with all of your flute practice! 🙂
I love your channel April ! ❤ I agree with you! Playing the flute is the most meditative, beautiful escape from this crazy world. Keep posting...❤❤❤
YES, I think so! Thanks for the nice comment, and for watching! It's true: playing flute (or music in general - but for ME, it's especially the flute) is a healing activity, and a great escape. I love about the flute that we get to BREATHE DEEP - that's so good for us physically, even aside from the fact that we're using our air to make music! 🙂
