When someone says "flautist" I picture the flauta, which is essentially a taquito but with chicken. You can find them at Costco. When it said "and Donatello shook the tamborine above his head" I immediately pictured the ninja turtle.
love that! I will definitely be buying some taquitos:) I also love that you defended your answers with other evidence, while still being kind and firm about other peoples opinions! I won't mess up names anymore now that I have a clear image of why!
What a great video! So many people ask me what you call a flute player, either flutist or flautist and this video explains so much! It is really interesting that the word flutist was created so much earlier while the flautist is much later. I much prefer “flutist” than “flautist” too! I don’t want to play to flaut or ridicule anyone either!!
I used to joke that you can only be called "flautist" once you make enough money to earn the extra vowel and sound fancy. Then people thought I was serious so I stopped...
What a great episode. I was/am an English major (turned flautista) and I really enjoy the evolution and nuances of words. ( Yes, I’ve long been a respiratory therapist, too…. That’s what keeps the lights on). Good job, April! I have to track down that book.
Thank you so much for the "history lesson" ! Many times I'm asked that question...I usually answer.."Oh, I play the flute" or I"m a flute player"...NOW! I have a long story to tell someone, when asked,....and I believe that they will NEVER ask that question of another flutist EVER!!!
Yes! I often say that I play the flute not the flaute, and that helps understanding. Anyone else use flute as a verb, like "I'm going to flute" or "I was fluting" ?
Love this so much! I also get this question a lot from people who think they are being funny. Now, when I get that question, I will just send them the link to this video. 😂
Thanks! Although the presentation was on the silly side, this is a good history lesson for all the people who always ask me "why are flute players called Flautists?" 😂
@@AprilClaytonflute I know.. Believe it or not.. someone asked me the same question about piAnist.. or pIanist...LOL!! I answered.. I don't know.. I am not an English teacher.. lol!
April, you are so talented and sweet that in my view you have every right to flout your choice of terms for your gift. If "flutist" started in the 1300s, if I remember your explanation correctly, you may not yet be old enough to be a flutist, but whatever instrument it is that you play, you have earned a professional right to call yourself whatever you want. I will probably remember to call you a flutist except when I'm in Berlin. Are you OK with Floetenspielerin?
Flautist is standard usage in the UK - you would likely be corrected if you used flutist. In fact I just had to undo autocorrect that changed flutist to flautist as I'm using a British English dictionary here on my phone 😂
From Wikipedia: "An uninhabited island, desert island, or deserted island, is an island, islet or atoll that is not permanently populated by humans." Works just fine!
I live in the UK and just grew up with being a flautist. Really interesting to hear the history of the names.

Good! Very interesting!

Thank you for the history lesson.
That was amusing!! I don't think other musicians have problems deciding what they are (except perhaps those who play the horn, or the cornet)
Congratulations!.

That book just came in the mail (from Thrift Books in Seattle). A flute encyclopedia!

I would say you have your priorities well in place!
"WHAT EXACTLY ARE MY PRIORITIES??" 😆
Very interesting! Didn't know that
This is awesome!! I've always wondered about this.
I asked my teacher that question and she said “what instrument do you play?” XD that was pretty much it
Love it x
This is great!
Hey April.. great job!!

I miss you!!!!
The prepared statement at 8:20 is spot on, I’ll have to give it to anyone that decides they want to call me a flautist 😂
Wow! I already feel more confident about my preferred title of flutist. I’ve always thought flautist sounded fruity.
great!!!

Oh wow! Now I understand "flutist" for sure! 😁
I know I most definitely do not want to jest and taunt with my flute, and I don't want anyone to think that either
contemplated moving to the UK for .03 seconds so that I can say flAUtist
Hahaha!

Hellooooo
I like flute player.
Wind instrumentalist, perhaps!!!
Perhaps that's a tad more vague, but sure, definitely is accurate! 🙂
I think you meant deserted island. Deserts don’t have islands.
