Frances that wooden spoon is a game changer! If you've never tried using a wooden spoon, I encourage. you to do so. I got mine on Shein for a few bucks. It came with a set of chopsticks and the spoon. I even take it to lunch with me at the office. 😂 I like the way it doesn't transmit heat....and it's just more enjoyable to eat with.

My husband makes potato and leek soup and it reminds me of your potato and onion soup. It's just leeks sauteed up, diced potatoes, and vegetable broth + salt and pepper to taste. It's surprisingly good for how few and simple the ingredients are. Tastes great with some croutons on top.

I have had both Vermont and Canadian maple sugar and they are very different tasting. Though I am a spoiled Canadian who has access to a farmer who has a small sugar bush and makes his own. He actually makes three different varieties that you tell apart by their colour. The darker the syrup the more intense the flavour.

I love these recipes! I've never been a fan of sweet potatoes because my only exposure was mashed sweet potato casserole topped with marshmallows. Too sweet!
But I followed Leah at Savvy Saute, and she chops hers into cubes and bakes them with cinnamon. I started doing mine with a little avocado oil, salt, pepper, and cinnamon. This savory method has become a hit, not just in my household but among family gatherings! They get crispy and the complexity of sweet, savory, and warm spice from the cinnamon makes them just perfect for an accompaniment to a variety of dishes!

For that final potato soup, if you have the opportunity to have even part of a leak, it will also add a tremendous amount of flavor. If you wanted to add something at the end there and you had access to it, a pat of butter and a tiny splash of cream would be good too. This very basic potato soup was something my mom made for me when I had a rare virus and couldn’t eat for a while and then had to slowly reintroduce pretty bland and just very simple foods. It became a comfort food for me, especially when I don’t feel well, which that virus reeked so much havoc on my health I’ve never really recovered and am sick quite a bit. Initially, it could only be the potatoes, water, salt, and a tiny bit of butter and milk, then later she was able to start adding other things, but even that very very basic soup tasted so good after not eating for so long and I still love it so much. I actually prefer leaks to onions in this soup, but carrots are great too.

I like to make my version of Cedar Lane's Enchilda Pie frozen entree. I use corn tortillas (however many I feel like eating), jarred salsa, and shredded cheese and just layer them, lasagna-style on a plate and microwave it for 45-60 seconds. (Cover with plastic wrap) Sometimes I'll add pickled jalepenos, refried or whole beans. or, if I have taco meat, I use that. Simple, easy, reasonably cheap and I think it's really good!

maple syrup is my favorite sweetener i use it in oatmeal every morning and even my coffee and people always think im weird but it doesnt make it taste like syrup at all for anyone whose never had maple syrup its really not even comparable to table syrup its much more liquidy, lighter in flavor and just a subtle sweetness its really perfect for everything i tried it once just so i can say ive tried it but ive NEVER gone back to your “typical” syrup which really isn’t good for you at all.

Before apples go bad try some new techniques. Slice the apples horizontally within one day after bringing them home from the grocery. You have to use a paring knife to make a small circle to remove the apple core slice by individual slice. On my table they look like an apple in the shape of a cookie 2 or 3 inches in diameter with a wonky hole in middle about 1/4 to 1/2 inches high. Next get a zip lock bag put a little cinnamon and sugar in the bag. You don’t need much at all. Then add the apple slices. You have now created refreshing healthy cookies. They store in the refrigerator. I eat them with my fingers or a napkin. If I put them on a paper plate I eat with a fork over the plate because the cinnamon sugar mixture can get sticky believe it or not the less sugar the better they are so lightly dust. One of my favorite snacks to eat with morning coffee or tea. When I combine this with hot tea no sweetener is needed in hot beverage. Oh I forgot to tell you. When the apple slices go in the Ziplockbags zip the bag shut with the zipper and give it a shake. Remember the smallest amount of sugar goes a long way. Sometimes 1 tablespoon is enough. Hope you enjoy this. Another unconventional thing I do with apples is dip them in thinned out pancake batter the apples have to be sliced thin and fry off in skillet. I also put fresh fruit of any variety on hot buttered toast without sugar. In a pinched I have used peaches from a can or the new Motts applesauce combos apple/mango etc. The Motts applesauce varieties are numerous. All of these ideas are frugal and use up the extra bits and bobs.

I am so excited I am planning to purchase gluten free oats to make oat flour. I am also going to purchase rice to grind up as well. I did my research on the internet. Different varieties of rice give a different taste and grind of flour. Rice flour is naturally gluten free. You need a need a blender, electric grain meal or electric coffee grinder brand new. You can bake with it by the way it does not behave in batter like wheat does. It takes different amounts of liquid and eggs and needs to sit out to absorb moisture for a half hour before batter is ready. Good news you end up with cheaper gluten free products that are home made. I know that Walmart will let you order rice flour premade through online ordering and it will be shipped.

Oh i love that sweet potato recipe with the syrup, will definetly make it myself. One of my favourites recipes to make is Zucchini Toskana with Rice. For that i use 2 small zucchini or 3/4 of a big one and dice them in little cubes (can be bigger cubes as well, depense on your preference). Than i will heat up a pot with Oil in it (1 or 2 TBSP, depends how much zucchini you have in there) and sauté the zucchini in there for a few minutes till there are soft. Then i will pour in 1/2 cup of vegetable broth and 1/2 cup of tomato purée. As seasoning i will use 1 or 2 freshly pressed glarlic cloves, oregano, basil, rosemary, pepper, cumin and paprika to finish it of. After taste tasting it, i will let it cook a few more minutes (2 - 4 Minutes). Should the sauce be to thin i will add more tomato purée or should it be to thick i add more broth, till i find it alright. We serve it with rice, but you could serve it with noodles as well. Sometimes i cook this with beacon pieces or serve it with chicken breast beside the rice. You could use tomato sauce, but then your sauce would not be thick enough.

I just saw one at SamsClub, also from Canada. One of my viewers told me that Trader Joes has the same thing! Starting to think Canada trees are better! 😂😂

Interesting video and don't worry Canada has the same maple trees as Vermont so your not missing anything lol people only pay for the name..im not a huge sweet potato person but this recipe might be good in a pumpkin pie .. there's always low sodium salt lol .but I definitely love your videos and all the effort in them and been getting good ideas for me and dad..my dad had two small heart attacks this pas august and hes ok but not liking the new stint and most health foods exspensive and healthy recipes can be exspensive and complicated and your recipes are definitely affordable and look easy enough ..the difference between maple syrup and what you probably grew up with the latter is fake with tons of corn syrup.. maple syrup is a whole other thing and not bad in moderation 😊

Whyever would you need specifically Canadian maple syrup? Excellent maple syrup is produced in this country, not only in Vermont, but in other states as well, especially in Upstate New York. They are all good. 🍁

Because of my attachment to my Canadian viewers and besides, I love to sample foods from around the world. The recipe that I was trying in the video was from a Canadian viewer. But yes, of course there are great maple syrups from the U.S.

I wonder if you don't like syrup because you've had imitation syrup in the past? Pure maple syrup is so good but I'm like you, I don't like my food *too* sweet. Usually I just put it in a small condiment bowl and dip each bite, that way it won't be too cloying (typically pancakes and waffles). I get syrup at Costco (organic), but I can't vouch for the best price being there. It also keeps a long time, like honey. I keep mine in the fridge.

    • @ArdentMichelle

I'm not really sure. I've only tried Aunt Jemima and that type of syrup. I don't dislike it....it's just that I prefer a less sweet breakfast 😂 Thanks for watching!

@@ArdentMichelle oh I'm not a carnivore beast. Lol. In fact I rarely eat much meat these day's. I've found that getting older has changed how my body processes things. But I fully admit that faux meat is just not good. I've tried and I think I'd rather go with no meat than faux. It's the texture and smell that get me. I do like tofu, just not daily.
