As an Iraq war veteran, hand to hand was not really a thing. If you were going hands then some one fucked up. The insurgency we fought in Iraq would rather blow themselves up, taking our guys with them, than fight us in hand to hand.
This was a very Personal Reaction to me, because the Death Korps is my Favorite Faction in 40k and i simply, unironicly LOVE this Lore- Video and view/listen it at least once a Month. The Outro alone is Epic and pushes Tears into an old Veterans Eyes.
Probably my favorite lore tidbit about the Death Korps is that they're so alien to even other Guardsmen that veteran Commissars from non-Krieg units get uncomfortable around them.

Luetin is reaching a couple times here. The book he's referencing makes it ambiguous whether Jurten approved Greel's request or not. Some of his dying words were "This will be my last compromise" which could be taken either way. Think of it though- if Greel was going to outright lie- he didnt need to harras Jurten on his deathbed so desperately. The lie Greel told was that Jurten *strongly* approved the practice, that he had okayed everything months in advance, and that Greel's mechanicus staff had full permission and authority to carry out birthing operations. As for clones- of Jurten no less, this is a big stretch. Again, from that book, one of the krieg officers says that his name is 'Jurten' upon meeting with an imperial inquisitor on the planets rejoining with the imperium- this was after great duress from the inquisitor though. My opinion? He was the commanding officer of the planetary military at that time, and simply went by 'Colonel' for much of his adult life- so taking after the old man's given name just seemed natural. Think of other culturally relevant people in history who have had children named after them- its a normal practice. What's so damn sad about that scene is the total human obliteration of the person behind the mask- that they effectively had no name but for a dead man. Vitae wombs are horrible, yes, but probably not traditional cloning. Its likely they are similar to the machines used to spawn Cherubs, the horses Death Riders mount, or even mechanicus bodies to be processed into servitors or skitarii. This practice was widespread in the 30k setting within the mechanicus in particular, but also in the wider imperial army with specially made 'Genome Soldiers' - genetically modified human-mutants created to fit a task well. Whats horrible about these machines is that they produce unnatural beings- humans with no mother, no father, no purpose save for what they were made for. They usually grow fast. Creation devices like these are seen as suitable only for beings with no souls or intelligence- slave creatures, basically. To rely on this technology to produce full humans is to reduce the value of a human life to nothing, genuinely nothing, except for pure machine-like practicality. Even the adeptus mechanicus does not do this to produce new tech priests or higher ranked skitarii leaders- Greel is an exceptional case, and almost certainly a radical. Also, old lore (what little there was) made sure to mention that, even in the universe of 40k, these machines are repugnant, horrifying to behold, and deeply disturbing, even to 40k's zealots. So, to summarize: when you take off the mask of a death korps soldier, you see a young, pallid face, with sunken emaciated dead-eyes that focus upon you with utter intensity. You see a human that from machine-birth has been reduced to a husk. It would be like looking at a holocaust survivor from the camps, or a shell-shocked veteran soldier... but they aren't mad, they aren't 'traumatized'- this is their normal, this is how it always is. You would look on it and cry because its not some clone freak or mutant, its the lost possibility of a person- a thing that is a man or woman but so thoroughly dehumanized they have nothing left in common with you. But despair not, for they are not soulless automatons; if they were, psykers could not abide them. They're just like you or me, just pushed to be what Krieg needed them to be.
As an addition, it's been described that Kriegers even have a sense of a humor, most often maccabe and gallows humor. They do have individual personalities, they're just, simply put: Stoic Pragmatism taken to it's highest extreme. They simply and rarely ever show their more personal, individual side to foreigners or other Regiments. Around each other they're mostly (sorta) normal. Just religiously stoic with dark jokes.
@@АлексейГальцов-х8д Actually from what I've read and found on the internet the Kriegsmen have like a tier list for melee weapons and the shovel is at the absolute bottom after combat knives. So although it's fun to say they pull out shovels it's literally Kriegsmens last pick for a melee weapon. You just know he's done for or out of options when he pulls out the shovel.

There is a misunderstanding of many when it comes to the deathcorps willingness to die. They dont throw themself mindlessly on the enemy without any sense of selfpreservation. They dont question or refuse to do something an officer orders, yes that is true. But they will try to stay alive until sacrifice is necessary. For example, a unit is pinned down by a sniper. one of them is ordered to run across the street to draw the snipers attention so that their own sniper can take action. that selected soldier will not hesitate like we would. He sees it as a necessary risk so he takes it. Another great example is the mentioned SODAZ video. the Krieger follow the spacemarine into the Tunnels. There they let him go first, clearing rooms systematically and savely. But the moment the Marine is knocked down they all know that rescuing him is more important than their lives, so none of them hesitate to fight the Khorne Berzerker to give the marine the chance to recover. obviously they all die, but they take the berzerker with them. A worthy death is its own reward.

I can also recommend Arch´s video on Krieg. It´s not as long or in-depth but it gives a better overview in general. And if you want a proper view on their way of fighting, look up videos on the siege of Vraks. Also, for music, listen to "Krieg" by Stringstorm.
I dont think that therr has ever been an mention or an official illustration of a krieger using a shovel. Absolutely has happened on Vraks, krieg itself, octarius and probably hundreds of other systems, but it isn't a main thing. Memes overall really make the krieg seem kinda shitty in my eyes, its the same 5 or something jokes over and over again, none of which are really all that accurate
As both a former Tyranid and Imperial Guard player... I don't have to image painting all those units. I lived it. 😖 Haven't played since just before 5th edition (played 2nd edition through 4th). However that meant i had to buy a ton of metal models before they got plastic models... and those were way more expensive. Oh... and i have over 200k points worth of Tyranids (based on 4th edition points). Thank god for getting a ton of them on clearance, as Barnes and Noble used to sell them but later clearanced them. I bought all my stores boxes for $2 each. I don’t know why i needed that 6th hive tyrant but he was only $2 so you bet i bought him. Lol.
@@ti8ick painting metal is not too different... especially if you put down primer paint first. The real difference is in gluing it together, as the pieces weight more so you gotta hold them together a bit longer. A lot of metal figures need to be reglued every now and then, as occasionally they'd have a piece fall off. This was especially common on the hive tyrant's whip.

@@vattmann1387 OH, I drilled and pinned models too. That said, there was a few things just too small/narrow to drill and pin... such as the previously mentioned Tyrant's lash whip. It basically just sat on the lower piece in a kinda step shape.
14:44- Yeah, painting a lot of any army could take awhile! Especially if it’s not just 2 or 3 paints!!! But there are also many techniques you could do to make it so much easier!!! I’m actually in the process of making a really big diorama for Cadia! But it has a lot of Krieg also!!!
1:11:00 After Julius Caesar, follow on emperors were called Caesar and the Russian word for emperor is Czar. So Krieg may have done the same with the name of Jurten.
A bit of religious lore Luetin left out about Kreig. Their current interpretation of the Imperial creed says that to NO die fighting in service to the Imperium is to never be forgiven & never stand at the Emperor's side in the afterlife. That's a big part of why they are so happy to run into killing zones, or whatever the target is. I say this as a collector of 40k since '89 & 2nd edition. For a 1st model that is an EXCELLENT piece! The only bit of advice I'd give is to bulk paint. Meaning that you do each layer on every member of the squad each time, rather than paint each model on it's own. At the very least use this technique for getting the main base colours down. It'll help finish projects a LOT
You should react to Leutin's 2-part series about the Grey Knights. They go way harder than Bricky told us about. That series also covers Kaldor Draigo, the Harlequins, and their fight with demons.

For a different take on Warhammer check out Baldemort's work. He take the setting and creates his own stories, some of which have a good fan following and he narrates them from the perspective of a data Servitor. My favourite is Thaddeus and Tarquinus , about an Inquisitor and his very talented protégé and also Kronan Da Cunning which is very Orky and hilarious.. There is also the Longest Second which is the final siege of Terra in the Heresy mainly from Rogal Dorns perspective. Amazing stuff.
people think Krieg is based strictly on Germany because of the name Krieg as well as the helmet but Krieg is based on a lot of different countries. The overcoat is French, boots/puttee are British, and the way they fight is most likely based on the US Marines and Imperial Japan. In WW1 US Marines were told to retreat by the British and French but the US Marines replied "Retreat? hell, we just got here" and they then don their gas masks and got into extremely bloody close combat with bayonets and shovels, it is also where the US Marines earned the nickname "devil dogs" because of how aggressive and vicious they were. the Japanese aspect of the fighting is for the loyalty they have towards their emperor and willingness to die for him.
I don't think the real question is how Krieg reproduces soldiers so fast. The problem is how they feed their population, including all the youngsters being formed into Death Corp soldiers, and their horses. It makes perfect sense that so many young people would volunteer to be sent elsewhere.
Feeding a population isn't exactly hard when you have a universe sized empire willing to pour resources into the planet, Krieg unironically probably has an entire agri-world dedicated to the task and thats without going down the rabbit hole of corpse starch.
48:55 "Why nuke the planet if you can just exterminatus?" Luetin does not say it, but the book states that Krieg had a massiv orbital defence system that could fend of a fleet trying to wipe the planet clean.
The Siege of Vraks is probably the most famous conflict involving the Death Korps, the channel Arbitor Ian has great video on it that I would recommend.

50 Million DeathKorp of Krieg are send to the Imperium per Year, this is 10 Million Soldiers less then the ones who fought in the 1st World War (60 Million)........ Most Soldiers of Krieg (no matter the Gender, and yes even though they are all technically clones, they do have different genders) are not even seeing their 17th Birthday, and that alone is very sad......if you put all other things into the mix and you get a pretty dark and emotionless, but also very Expirienced and Well trained Elite force that can Die on Mass, because you will get alot more every year and what does it matter that 5 Million of them died? you still got 45 Million more Fresh units of them and also some Veteran Units, you also get 50 Million more Soon, so what does it Matter? Well......, much, because they are still humans and Humans in the Imperium of Man are Worth Less then 1 Lasgun or less then 1 Uniform......its Eadier to "produce" humans then it is to manifacture weapons and clothing.....

yeah... Imperium is quite hypocritical about enforcing their own rules if it suits them. I mean Inquisition often use demonic or xenos artifacts and weapona themselves in pursue of their goals. Imperium of Man are NOT a good guys. I would even argue that they are worse than Chaos Heretics and Chaos Marines, because they hide their nature and bloodlust behind grand proclamatitons about future, while Chaos simply accepts who they are and do what they want. Now I was always fan of Orks so I don't really care about either Imperium or Chaos, but still.

Mine wear grey clothing with blue armor, this is the colour of the army from my own world.. all my armies suit my own narrative of an out there solar system that has lost contact with the rest of the universe (hence no P**marines nor talking necrons.. ). To give you an idea of the scale of the imperial guard, I ran the numbers on the imperiums population going with the stat that 80% of imperial citizens are living in hive cities and hive worlds where the population can run into the tens of billions, skipping over some very boring math, this gives us a rough population of 40 QUINTILLION citizens. Based on this number, the imperial guard could sacrifice the total population of modern earth in battle EVERY DAY and not ever scratch the surface of the replacement birth rate. And the Kriegers have a replacement rate that is much higher than the natural birth rate due to their use of Vitae Wombs to grow new soldiers.
Autocratic, egotistical and power mad planetary leaderships. Even Luetin would be challenged, to find five Imperial Worlds not lead by leaders with such traits.

What's interesting to me is that detonating nukes high in the atmosphere has the least amount of nuclear fallout possible. Ground level based nuclear detonations produce the most fallout while high altitude and air burst detonations produce the least comparatively. Its why Hiroshima today isn't a nuclear wasteland. The bombs dropped were air burst detonating at a medium altitude to maximize the destructive blast. Most of the fallout from a nuclear blast decays rather quickly and spreads out when detonated up high. However, when at the ground it contaminates the soil and creates bi-products that stay relatively closer in the areas. There also wouldn't be a nuclear winter as there would be no soil blasted into the atmosphere to obstruct sunlight.

So although it's fun to say they pull out shovels it's literally Kriegsmens last pick for a melee weapon. You just know he's done for or out of options when he pulls out the shovel.

There is a misunderstanding of many when it comes to the deathcorps willingness to die. They dont throw themself mindlessly on the enemy without any sense of selfpreservation. They dont question or refuse to do something an officer orders, yes that is true. But they will try to stay alive until sacrifice is necessary.
For example, a unit is pinned down by a sniper. one of them is ordered to run across the street to draw the snipers attention so that their own sniper can take action. that selected soldier will not hesitate like we would. He sees it as a necessary risk so he takes it.
Another great example is the mentioned SODAZ video. the Krieger follow the spacemarine into the Tunnels. There they let him go first, clearing rooms systematically and savely. But the moment the Marine is knocked down they all know that rescuing him is more important than their lives, so none of them hesitate to fight the Khorne Berzerker to give the marine the chance to recover. obviously they all die, but they take the berzerker with them. A worthy death is its own reward.

I dont think that therr has ever been an mention or an official illustration of a krieger using a shovel. Absolutely has happened on Vraks, krieg itself, octarius and probably hundreds of other systems, but it isn't a main thing.
Memes overall really make the krieg seem kinda shitty in my eyes, its the same 5 or something jokes over and over again, none of which are really all that accurate

As both a former Tyranid and Imperial Guard player... I don't have to image painting all those units. I lived it. 😖
Haven't played since just before 5th edition (played 2nd edition through 4th). However that meant i had to buy a ton of metal models before they got plastic models... and those were way more expensive.
Oh... and i have over 200k points worth of Tyranids (based on 4th edition points). Thank god for getting a ton of them on clearance, as Barnes and Noble used to sell them but later clearanced them. I bought all my stores boxes for $2 each. I don’t know why i needed that 6th hive tyrant but he was only $2 so you bet i bought him. Lol.

@@ti8ick painting metal is not too different... especially if you put down primer paint first. The real difference is in gluing it together, as the pieces weight more so you gotta hold them together a bit longer.
A lot of metal figures need to be reglued every now and then, as occasionally they'd have a piece fall off. This was especially common on the hive tyrant's whip.

@@vattmann1387 OH, I drilled and pinned models too. That said, there was a few things just too small/narrow to drill and pin... such as the previously mentioned Tyrant's lash whip. It basically just sat on the lower piece in a kinda step shape.

A bit of religious lore Luetin left out about Kreig.
Their current interpretation of the Imperial creed says that to NO die fighting in service to the Imperium is to never be forgiven & never stand at the Emperor's side in the afterlife. That's a big part of why they are so happy to run into killing zones, or whatever the target is.
I say this as a collector of 40k since '89 & 2nd edition. For a 1st model that is an EXCELLENT piece! The only bit of advice I'd give is to bulk paint. Meaning that you do each layer on every member of the squad each time, rather than paint each model on it's own. At the very least use this technique for getting the main base colours down. It'll help finish projects a LOT
You should react to Leutin's 2-part series about the Grey Knights. They go way harder than Bricky told us about. That series also covers Kaldor Draigo, the Harlequins, and their fight with demons.

For a different take on Warhammer check out Baldemort's work. He take the setting and creates his own stories, some of which have a good fan following and he narrates them from the perspective of a data Servitor. My favourite is Thaddeus and Tarquinus , about an Inquisitor and his very talented protégé and also Kronan Da Cunning which is very Orky and hilarious.. There is also the Longest Second which is the final siege of Terra in the Heresy mainly from Rogal Dorns perspective. Amazing stuff.
people think Krieg is based strictly on Germany because of the name Krieg as well as the helmet but Krieg is based on a lot of different countries. The overcoat is French, boots/puttee are British, and the way they fight is most likely based on the US Marines and Imperial Japan. In WW1 US Marines were told to retreat by the British and French but the US Marines replied "Retreat? hell, we just got here" and they then don their gas masks and got into extremely bloody close combat with bayonets and shovels, it is also where the US Marines earned the nickname "devil dogs" because of how aggressive and vicious they were. the Japanese aspect of the fighting is for the loyalty they have towards their emperor and willingness to die for him.
How these stories have not yet been picked up by big studios to produce endless content is beyond me.

I don't think the real question is how Krieg reproduces soldiers so fast. The problem is how they feed their population, including all the youngsters being formed into Death Corp soldiers, and their horses. It makes perfect sense that so many young people would volunteer to be sent elsewhere.
Feeding a population isn't exactly hard when you have a universe sized empire willing to pour resources into the planet, Krieg unironically probably has an entire agri-world dedicated to the task and thats without going down the rabbit hole of corpse starch.

Isn't literally EVERY single unit in wh40k described as being the one entity with the most unbreakable willpower? So how are the WWI erm Krieg Corpses special?
50 Million DeathKorp of Krieg are send to the Imperium per Year, this is 10 Million Soldiers less then the ones who fought in the 1st World War (60 Million)........
Most Soldiers of Krieg (no matter the Gender, and yes even though they are all technically clones, they do have different genders) are not even seeing their 17th Birthday, and that alone is very sad......if you put all other things into the mix and you get a pretty dark and emotionless, but also very Expirienced and Well trained Elite force that can Die on Mass, because you will get alot more every year and what does it matter that 5 Million of them died? you still got 45 Million more Fresh units of them and also some Veteran Units, you also get 50 Million more Soon, so what does it Matter?
Well......, much, because they are still humans and Humans in the Imperium of Man are Worth Less then 1 Lasgun or less then 1 Uniform......its Eadier to "produce" humans then it is to manifacture weapons and clothing.....

yeah... Imperium is quite hypocritical about enforcing their own rules if it suits them. I mean Inquisition often use demonic or xenos artifacts and weapona themselves in pursue of their goals.
Imperium of Man are NOT a good guys. I would even argue that they are worse than Chaos Heretics and Chaos Marines, because they hide their nature and bloodlust behind grand proclamatitons about future, while Chaos simply accepts who they are and do what they want. Now I was always fan of Orks so I don't really care about either Imperium or Chaos, but still.
13:30 I have a guard army.. and yes there is heaps.. But! they are actually easy.. you paint them in batches. Also.why is everyone painting the way they are told! they don't have to be .. anything. Mine wear grey clothing with blue armor, this is the colour of the army from my own world.. all my armies suit my own narrative of an out there solar system that has lost contact with the rest of the universe (hence no P**marines nor talking necrons.. ). People seem to have long forgotten that WH40k was sparcley made so you at home could make up stuff (this is why 2 primarchs are missing! they were left out so you could make them up! ).
It's only been recent years that fans became obsessed with normalizing sci-fi.

To give you an idea of the scale of the imperial guard, I ran the numbers on the imperiums population going with the stat that 80% of imperial citizens are living in hive cities and hive worlds where the population can run into the tens of billions, skipping over some very boring math, this gives us a rough population of 40 QUINTILLION citizens. Based on this number, the imperial guard could sacrifice the total population of modern earth in battle EVERY DAY and not ever scratch the surface of the replacement birth rate. And the Kriegers have a replacement rate that is much higher than the natural birth rate due to their use of Vitae Wombs to grow new soldiers.
The Iron Warriors would love the Krieg.

What's interesting to me is that detonating nukes high in the atmosphere has the least amount of nuclear fallout possible. Ground level based nuclear detonations produce the most fallout while high altitude and air burst detonations produce the least comparatively. Its why Hiroshima today isn't a nuclear wasteland. The bombs dropped were air burst detonating at a medium altitude to maximize the destructive blast. Most of the fallout from a nuclear blast decays rather quickly and spreads out when detonated up high. However, when at the ground it contaminates the soil and creates bi-products that stay relatively closer in the areas.
There also wouldn't be a nuclear winter as there would be no soil blasted into the atmosphere to obstruct sunlight.
I would say that GW ripped (again) another franchise, in this case Rogue Trooper and its heavy poluted Nu-Earth, turning the dial to the max
