I saw this live in person in 1990. I couldn't believe it. I was not expecting a band of this caliber opening for Skinny Puppy. Blew me away then and I've been a fan since.
I love that they are recognized as a punk band. Punk was still alive in the 90s, you just had to look. Lots of alt rock bands then could be considered punk, especially the ones related to Seattle and areas like that. My favorite punk bands or punky grunge bands from this decade is Babes in Toyland, Hole (mainly earlier Hole) , Nirvana (very influenced by punk rock), The Gits, 7 year b*tch, L7, bikini kill….ext. some would disagree but this kinda punk music or punk adjacent movement is probably my favorite kind. I appreciate classic punk bands, even the hardcore, like blag flag or Dead Kennedys (LOVE Dead Kennedys) but I really like how the 90s had woman in the scene, and it wasn’t just in the style of riot grrl, as shown by babes in Toyland because they aren’t really riot grrl but they are a woman punk rock band.
I can’t put my finger on it, (8 year later) something about this performance..Laurie’s drumming, Michelle’s bass and Kat singing / single only guitar playing is just perfection. And the song. The Lyrics. The sudden Stops. It’s a simple yet ecstatic song that just involves a lot of, what some may describe as looking crazed but really is about letting it all out. Idc what anyone says I don’t think there was grunge like babes in Toyland. Everyone and I mean everyone friends, family, boyfriend, besides my brother tells me BIT is “too much” for them. Still. IDC. I love them so much. Me embalmer will write Babes in Toyland on my forehead during my Viewing when when I’m dead (hopefully it’d be an open casket surely).
I know exactly what you mean. For me it's perfection. Please do me a favour and search 'babes in toyland Bloomington' and watch that live show from 1991. If you think this is good...watch that. Unreal. Especially the version of 'Mother' and 'Laugh my head off'. Get back to me! Enjoy!

GOD I NEED GRUNGE TO BE BACK, ALL THIS POP BULLSHIT IS GOING TO DRIVE ME BATSHIT CRAZY!! Omf if I hear another one direction song, I am going to blow my brains out...
I'm sick of people comparing female bands to each other purely because they're female. It's not a competition and one doesn't have to be better or worse. Babes is an incredibly unique band with a style all their own and to compare them to anyone for the purpose of trivializing other female artists seems so silly to me.
Nobody's comparing the two because they're women. They're making comparisons because Courtney Love is a talentless hack that stole Kat Bjelland's entire getup - *down to having the exact same guitar model* (a Rickenbacker 425). Not to mention how many times Courtney Love had to mime performances because she was either too drunk or too stupid to remember how to play her own songs (songs that she didn't even write, but took full credit for.) In Kat Bjelland's own words, Courtney Love only cared about fame and media attention (which is why the band the two had originally formed split up).
@@juliusebola9389I mean based on the sound and people associated with Babes In Toyland, I think it’s fair to call them grunge punk. Idk. Some argue if grunge is more of a scene or a genre, but I can see them fitting either or.
@livvyyyyyyyyyyy Like Dave Grohl said, _"I'm Not Entirely Sure What Grunge Is."_ Pesonally, I can understand the PNW calling it grunge, but there's several grunge bands that I don't listen to, and several that I do. These past 20 years should not have aged them like they did. They must've fell on hard times. Man. But what do I know I wasnt even around when they were doing this.
