      @MsDarkCello My grandpa said he could’ve done more and he did very good for himself. It’s in human nature to believe we could’ve done more. My next question is do you think with all the poison we have been eating and bathing in, could that have a cancerous effect on not just this girl but millions of people out there?

    My uncle died from this--65 years of being a rancher and the lesion that killed him was on his back in a spot that was never exposed to the sun. People need to realize that cancerous moles can appear in areas that dont get exposure.
    Also: ITS A MYTH THAT DARK SKINNED PEOPLE DONT GET IT. Only other person I knew who died from melanoma was a black guy on my ship. He had a mole under his hair that bled when he cut it shaving his head and never really healed up. By the time he thought to go to a doctor about it it was way too late. It had spread everywhere. He was 39 years old.

    • @automnejoy5308
      @automnejoy5308 2 місяці тому +15

      That's the scariest place that it could happen -- under the hair! He was shaving his head and even he noticed it too late. But if you have a full head of hair, how do you stand a chance? You can't easily see what's going on under there. That's so difficult. Good reason to wear a hat as much as possible! But you could still get it as you pointed out with your uncle! Awful.

      Yes my best friend was a dark skinned African American and she died with skin cancer. She had a sore under her toenail that would not heal she went to the doctor after 6 mos and it was too late. Everyone should get a skin check by their PCP or dermatologist. I made sure my family got skin checks and we are African Americans.

    I found out I had cancer through a mole when I was 18 at an OB appointment. I went months with it itching and it grew a white halo around it.. so thought nothing of it. Put a bandaid over it and kept living. I remember telling my Dr. I scratched it off my mistake and when they saw it they were horrified. I still took having cancer lightly. Almost 29 years later I’m here and I try to warn people all the time.

    When I was younger, physicians gave physical exams with patients in the nude - they examined the entire body, checked gait, posture, eyesight, look into every orifice, checked joints and muscles, fingernails, hair, etc., but nowadays they ask you how you’re doing and send you for bloodwork - fifteen minutes and done. You could have fifteen toes and the mole the size of a baby’s head on your ass and they wouldn’t notice! I have even been to specialists who write in the record that they’ve visually inspected, palpated, touched body parts when they absolutely did not. What a farce!

    About a year ago, I found a odd looking mark on my lower leg. I called to get an appointment with a dermatologist. There was an 8 MONTH wait to get into one, 7 months for another. This was WITH me telling them it wasn't routine, that I had a concern. The mark eventually subsided on it's own, but let me tell you, if you need a skin check and have to wait that long, you could be in real trouble. RIP young lady.

    • @snowps1
      @snowps1 Місяць тому +3

      Yes, dermatologists are a long wait for an appt. But here's a tip... If you can't get into a derm quick enough, go to a plastic surgeon. Their specialty is skin surgery. You can get into a plastic surgeon much quicker and they will remove the spot very nicely and send it for a biopsy. I did this very thing several years ago when I couldn't get a derm appt for six months. I called a plastic surgeon and got an appt a few weeks out.

      Someone else had mentioned that men with thinning hair or who are bald (anyone in general, but usually men) should also be careful about protecting their scalp since it is has more exposure to UV rays and is often neglected when it comes to sun protection. I have two tips. Number one, you should be seeing a dermatologist for skin check every year. It is very hard to get into a dermatologist office as a new patient. It's a very long wait. So schedule an appointment now and have your skin checked and go every year. Then you will stay as a current patient at that office. Then if you have a funny mole come up you can get an appointment much quicker because your current patient.
    The second tip is if you're not a current patient at a dermatologist office, and you have anything funny on your skin and you can't get an appointment at the dermatologist office soon enough, then call a plastic surgeon's office. Plastic surgeons specialize in skin surgery and they can cut the spot out just as easily and send it for a biopsy. And you can usually get into a plastic surgeon's office much quicker than a dermatologist as a new patient.

    I suffered severe sun damage as a child which left me with sun spots from an early age. I had my first skin cancer screening appt in Florida and the doctor spent 2 minutes doing a whole body scan using only eyes... I have suns spots and moles all over it, so it surprised me that an exam could be that fast and the cost was between $200-300.... Not long after that I noticed a small rough patch on my back (I can't really see back there myself). Not sure what it yet, it's already been 8 months and it's still there. 🤬

    R.I.P. Sad. On the flipside, not getting any sun or being constantly afraid of it, can lead to many other health issues too. We need some sun, Vit. D and K2 (always with K2.) Low Vit. D is a health disaster. Melanoma develops in areas that don't get sun. Some say it is from a Vit. D deficiency- ironically. We really, really need Vit. D.

    What I thought was a pimple on the side of my face and ended up being squamous cell carcinoma. I am 32 years old now, but at the time I was 30 years old and was very shocked because I do not have any family history of skin, cancer, and, I have medium tan complexion, my family is from Guatemala so I have darker features and I grew up in San Francisco, not a super sunny place. The dermatologist was very surprised and asked me if I had a really bad sunburn when I was a child, but I didn’t. I wear sunscreen religiously now and get a skin check of my complete body every six months.
