There is no duo studio recording of it, although they have done it together many times in concert over the years . The song was pretty much complete when producer Jimmy Iovine mentioned to Bruce that he was concerned that Patti didn't have a hit single for the "Easter" album. Bruce offered up this song because he knew he wasn't going to finish it and record it to a completed state as he was already in over his head with songs he had written for the "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" album. Also, it was a love song, which he was uncomfortable with writing at the time. Her feelings of her romantic partner not being present when she needed him influenced changes with some of the lyrics. What's interesting is that Bruce has performed the song over the years with HIS own lyrics, but he's also performed it with the way that Patti sings it. So sometimes it appears on Springsteen live records as a Springsteen penned song, and sometimes as a Springsteen-Smith penned song. Bruce said during "The Promise" - a tremendous DVD documentary on the making of the "Darkness" record - that Patti's version of the song has been a tremendous gift to him.....that she wrote emotionally mature lyrics that he was simply too "cowardly" (his words) to write at the time. Another song done up for Bruce's "Darkness" album, "Fire," was originally given to Robert Gordon but in 1979 was covered by The Pointer Sisters who made it into Bruce's biggest hit single up to that point of time. On a semi-related note, in early 1982, famed producer Quincy Jones approached Bruce to write a song for Donna Summer. He wrote "Cover Me." Bruce's manager convinced him to keep the song for himself, so Bruce wrote another song called "Protection" instead. On youtube.com you can hear Donna's version and the E Street Band's version of "Protection." However, there is a duo version of "Protection" with Bruce and Donna that does exist in the vaults that has yet to be released. There's your musical history lesson of the day :)
thank you
I love these to solo and together in this song. Did they ever do a recording of it together ? Not a live recording in concert but just a recording.
