  • Even Elon Musk (of all people) has noticed J.K. Rowling’s obsessive tweets about trans people, and has decided to encourage her to consider talking about “other matters.” In this video we’ll get to her response and try to discern why she’s so obsessed with hating trans people.

Supporting the trans community is not anti-féminiist. Prioritising trans needs over women’s needs is, as clearly prioritising men who identify as women over actual women is misogynistic.

As a white CIS woman have you ever heard of intersectionality? The premise is that white middle class CIS women ignored the feminist perspective of other women such as the poor, religious and those in vulnerable situations . JK Rowlings position is that they should be considered and are not being.
So it’s not about whether you don’t have a problem with x or y policy but how the policy impacts all women including these groups.
So an example would be. I’m a liberal European and have no problem baring my breasts in the beach. I go to women’s only and mixed saunas. I don’t mind a male gynaecologist. However I’m aware that women not being given the choice of female only services will mean that some will avoid health checks and exercise ie they will be excluded from some services and that will negatively impact them.
So in solidarity with other women I support some spaces being female only ie where this excludes or disadvantages any woman in a meaningful way - so not toilets but yes changing services, prisons, hospitals and where women are naked. Please note that having female only spaces doesn’t mean there aren’t also mixed spaces but legislating that men who identify as women are women means abolishing services only for women. How is that progressive and inclusive ?

Feminism's true enemy is the patriarchy, and the patriarchy as a concept also affects men, dictating what is or isn't "acceptable" or "manly", and creating a narrow view of "manhood" based on the subjugation of women.
JK's brand of "feminism" is one that actually serves patriarchal ideals as it turns women into their own tool of subjugation, claiming they must hold themselves to impossible standards and a narrow view of womanhood.

Between that and her being abused by her ex husband, I think she has quite a lot of internalised hatred/fear of men, and that leads her to be extremely suspicious of trans women. Her "rags to riches" backstory is almost entirely fabricated, by the way. I think it's worth pointing this out because I see a lot of people credit her for being a "self-made billionaire", etc. This is complete nonsense; Her parents and relatives have always been incredibly wealthy and she basically grew up in a mansion. At one point she lived for two months in social housing (which is nothing) and she acts like she was the female equivalent of Oliver Twist at that point in time. It's laughable. Let's not fall for this anymore.

One thing that came across to me as pretty disappointing, when I finally got around to reading the Larry Pottsman books, was that Sharry never actually focused on learning skills. He was incompetent, but never had that big "turn around" moment when he really buckles down and goes through a training montage getting better and better, outside of a tiny handful of spells. He spent a whole school year literally cheating his way through a class, for example. I didn't want to read a book about a kid pretending to become a magic man, I wanted to see him ACTUALLY become a legendary wizard. Instead, when the time came for him to just ditch school and take up his mission... he spent most of the time running away from danger and camping out in the frickin' woods because he wasn't really capable of doing it on his own, and he really only had himself to blame.
The book series wasn't about Potter "growing", it was about him just falling backwards into success because he was always "special" the whole time and why wouldn't everyone around him just accept that? It's fitting I think that J.K. Rowling has a similar attitude about herself. Write what you know, and all that.

@@tjenadonn6158 I'm okay with "chosen one" stories, but they've got to be executed in a compelling way. For me, Potty Harrer spent every waking moment moping that not literally everyone liked him and was basically handed most of his victories on a platter by everyone around him. I don't mind starting off the journey that way, but I'd prefer if he still had to work towards a goal. Heck, he's got all these friends and allies to rely on to help him but... he pushed them away for one whole annoying book.
On the flip side, we have something like Zelda. Link's a chosen one, Zelda's a chosen one, but what's made clear is just what a burden that is, and victory isn't assured it has to be worked towards. Link also has to have a lot of help, but his attitude of doing whatever he can to help people makes it clear he'd probably be doing that even if he wasn't chosen by the gods.
Frodo is a reluctant hero, a chosen one by circumstance, Gandalf, and the god of that world, but even though he's reluctant, he's doing his best and working to improve himself as best he can over the story. Heck, he also gets (literally) carried by his friend, and he even fails and falls to temptation right at the end, but his good nature paid off even if by luck.
There's still ways to make chosen one stories interesting... but Harry was a complete brat about it. In the hands of any other story teller, Harry would have been called what he was, a bully, and Neville frankly was far more of a hero than Harry was in most of that journey. What was Harry's actual motive the whole story? Not getting killed. A rather selfish motive for a hero. Don't get me wrong, that's enough of a motive to tell a story, just not a hero's story.

The crazy thing for me here is that when the first Harry Potter book came out it got enormous criticism from right wing people and fundamentalist churches for promoting wizards and magic and having all sorts of bad influences on children. It was a return to the satanic panic of the 70s when Dungeons and Dragons appeared, and KISS and ... and ... and....
I was intrigued enough to buy the book and was impressed on how good a story teller she was. But it was definitely a kids' book. As the series progressed the books became darker and more adult but even with their increasingly dark themes the outcry lessened. So now the books and the movies are done she's decided to join the right and the religious fundamentalists in their pursuit of a new target. The hunted has become the hunter.

While trauma and poverty can understandably be show stoppers, in school, work, and life skills, there is one thing we can control, & it’s how we treat others. We can take the part of the bully, and “win” by manipulation & intimidation. We may avoid being hurt, but it gets lonely when nobody trusts you not to hurt them. Or we can keep our hearts ready to empathize and show kindness, even if it means being vulnerable. The true courage is the courage to be open and kind, in a hostile world.

For as much backwards, pro-slavery, pro-establishment messaging there was in Harry Potter, it sure did seem to inspire a lot of LGBTQ awakenings on accident. It's not like Harry Potter ever had a conservative fanbase, mainly because of the history of conservatives thinking the book was satanic.
