What we usually see are inflammatory videos of the extremes and what are the actually rare because they incite people and therefore get eyeballs. What is posted is what gets eyeballs but that is social media not the reality of education.
I don't know how rare this is because I don't have the statistics to determine that, but what is obvious to me is that in order to teach in the manner he does, he must have the backing of his school district and board of education. Therefore, they are to be highly commended for hiring teachers like him and allowing them to teach critical thinking in the classroom. I'm a science teacher, and never shy away from the 'tricky' questions or the topics that are 'off limits.' When kids directly ask me for my opinion on something (which happens all the time, kids are super curious and switched on), I ask them what theirs is first, and always play devil's advocate. It's great when you see the lightbulb light up and they say "oh, I've never thought about it like that." Unfortunately, the vast majority of my colleagues won't engage out if fear of parent complaints, professional consequences, and a lack of confidence. There's nothing wrong with asking kids tough questions and challenging their views. The best learning happens in these moments. We need to create a more tolerant, open minded and critical thinking generation. Especially when social media algorithms are hell bent on forcing us into set ideologies. It also teaches me too, because I really have to be on the ball with some of the imaginative questions I get asked 😅. They ask better questions than most journalists.
Science teacher, former, and I totally agree. Often I would discuss confirmation bias and how to determine whether data was reliable, because that is often the basis for specious logic, like the student’s.
I love that he called out the lesson, in Harry Potter, that you have to face the unknown and your fears voluntarily. That lesson is from, I believe in the Order of the Phoenix, the moment that Harry realizes that either he has to kill Voldemort or Voldemort has to kill him, and critically, accepts it. He thinks to himself that his acceptance is the difference between being dragged into the Coliseum kicking and screaming and walking in with your head held high. He supposes that some would think that is a distinction without out a difference, but _he_ now understands that it is everything. It was at that moment, I began to consider those books literature, not merely entertainment.
This is actually very similar to what Jordan Peterson has been saying for years ("face the dragon"), and he often refers to Harry Potter for examples and metaphors too.
@@oletrn Yes. It's often connected to his advice to face your Jungian shadow. All of his work unpacking the deep and lasting metaphorical wisdom that shows up in popular culture is wonderful.
This is what a teacher should be. I hope that some in the profession take note. Fair play to the student for listening and his reaction. Young people should not be told what to think but how to think. Hallelujah!
Kudos to this teacher, actually teaching kids how to think, not what to think. We're witnessing a tidal wave of our education institutions telling our kids what to think. It's a relief to see that there are light houses of great teachers and teaching staying strong. His youtube channel has great content too.
Unfortunately, this is quite a normal example of a critical thinking exercise, as led by Socratic questioning. That this became a headline shows what a dire state our thinking is in
This young man should immediately get a job in Oxford or Cambridge to teach critical thinking or some nice institution that can value his talent and/or to do training for other educators on how to lead students through critical thinking.
I didn't see any debate in debate classes in Ireland either when I studied there. I saw debate where just a monologue of opinion you should follow. I was shocked
You wouldn't believe what the teacher was teaching the class my 14yrs daughter was in (uk). Where to touch people to pleasure them!!! I am shocked to the high hill!
School should be for the information that isn't everywhere in this sex-obsessed world. The boring but important subjects. Those teachers aren't just perverts, they're lazy.
Don’t pity those who are blessed with the opportunity to prove their virtues and principles to be just that. Living in line with the truth isn’t easy, and if it were, we wouldn’t view it as an admirable thing to do.
Probably because the young gentleman was soft spoken and had something to say. Far too many aggressive and shouting guests on these types of panels. I get it - verbal bloodsports sell, but still it's nice to hear civil discourse for a change.
In my time this kind of teacher would be called... an average teacher. For those who are (very) young, for thousands of years there have been teachers who have been encouraging thoughts. It's a terribly thing what has been happening in the last 10 or so years. I strongly hope we'll look back at this period and realize how incredibly stupid and damaging 'wokeness' is.
One of my former bosses has told me once : " You can tell an idiot he's an idiot a 1000 times and it won't reach them, but if you can make them realize they're an idiot they'll remember it for the rest of their life"
The real gift in this video of him, is if you watch it all, he sets up the environment for the kid to learn for himself "I'm not gonna take any position", then gets the kid to explore the question he is asking, to examine it's validity for himself and encouarges him to decide if what is being claimed "the given" matches what he is reading out in his question. He leads the student to learn "thinking" for himself, he doesn't try to teach him how to think, he allows that to be discovered by prompting. It's a talent, to be able to setup and lead self discovery like that.
Thank you Piers , just watched the video and it was great to watch ... A great teacher and a student willing to questioning their thinking ... Loved it
Parents, always be interested in what teachers teach your kids in school. Ask your kids what they are being taught. These days, you never know what dangerous garbage they are throwing at your kids.
Why is the clip with the teacher and student cut into so many pieces? You literally cut out every complete thought the student says except for "I feel like an idiot now." That's kind of messed up. I would like to think the teacher immediately pushed back on that part, but we'll never know because the clip is edited that way. Students are at school to learn. Being wrong is part of learning. A student should never be made to feel "like an idiot" in a classroom setting. The way the clip is framed is to infer a humiliation of the student and that should not be how educational exchanges are digested.
agreed. they also cut out the part at the end where the teacher says, it’s ok, that’s why we are here, to learn about this stuff. It’s time for everyone to acknowledge how many young people have been indoctrinated; arguably it’s not completely their fault they are so lost and off track. It’s our fault - the adults - for allowing this misguided and misinformed sanctimonious woke stuff and cancel culture for so long
I'm a GenY, and I was taught by teachers who actually taught like this fella. Teachers need to teach students how to live in the real world NOT push their personal views and opinions onto them. Teachers used to be a corner stone of a society now they're just jokes.

A professor like this is rare.
They are not Rare. Despite what gets circulated his way of teaching is indicative of most educators.
I know he has their backing and support because if he didn't, he would have already been told to hit the road and don't come back.
They were not rare in the 1980s at a small state university (heavily supported by two great businessmen in our small, geographically remote area). This is the kind of professor I remember. The video gives me hope those professors still exist.
I work at a large city community college and I assure you there are many. Most are like this despite what gets blasted online. People find videos and stories that support their ideas about what is happening at colleges and then post them endlessly. Like those street interviews where they string together a whole bunch of people who don’t know who George Washington was and then one person who does to make it seem accurate and in real time to prove how stupid students or the public are when in reality they edited out the 95% of people who do know. People knowing is not exciting. That doesn’t get eyeballs and comments. We all need to be careful what someone else presents as reality in real time truth when we ourselves are not there And I totally include myself in that statement. @@NoOne-bp2jw

The teacher is spot on, begin with the source and go from there.
