    I have one more question! Since you have the same numbers for every class and they are moved around class to class, do the kids ever forget what center they were at the previous week? If so how do you handle that? Thanks!!

    • @BigIdeasArtStudio
      @BigIdeasArtStudio  2 роки тому

      I don't keep track of centers from week to week. I know some teachers have students keep track in a sketchbook or notebook or even a Google doc. But for me, I couldn't justify the need for one.

      @@BigIdeasArtStudio Thank you so much for all of your replies! So does that mean they only work at one center a week? What if they don’t finish their project?

    • @BigIdeasArtStudio
      @BigIdeasArtStudio  2 роки тому

      @@dinacalabro3930 you're welcome! No, it's very fluid. I allow them to move through centers as they need to. The moving of the magnets and choosing a center is really just a way for me to create a routine of it and for them to understand their options for the day. They can move as necessary and they can always finish what they started from the week before :)

    Thank for you the step by step of how to implement choice at the beginning of the year. I'm starting TAB after 20 years of DBAE and found this very helpful!

    I love that you mentioned Emergent Curriculum!! So true. As someone who is a total plan A, plan B, plan C type of person, I imagined that I would be planning everything in advance. But I'm learning that with TAB, if we try to plan too far ahead, we're going to be doing a lot more work than necessary and lots of revisions will be required. I'm learning more and more that the kids will lead and inform SO much of the instruction, which is how it should be!

      Yes! And in all honesty, it's better for them AND easier for us too! Total win-win!

    Quick question- do you still have table stations set up with COVID restrictions? How has this changed your teaching process? I'm starting TAB and Choice, and struggling with keeping students socially distanced, etc etc.

      Hi there! So, this year I have 25 individual desks instead of large table, and I have the materials set up around the perimeter of the room so students grab what they need and take it back to their desk.

    Hi there! I am a brand new TAB teacher and I'm so happy to have found your channel!! This video is terrific! I especially love the practical information that can easily be implemented. I'm so excited about your demo videos too!!
    I wonder if you have any recommendations (or maybe you are making one) of a video that explains what TAB is (for the kiddos). I watched the one you have for the grown-ups. Any suggestions?

    My classes will only be 30 minutes, 1x/week. It seems like a lot to fit this all in, like we'd never get anything finished. Do you have any advice regarding short classes? Also, do you always begin and end your classes with discussions?

    • @BigIdeasArtStudio
      @BigIdeasArtStudio  2 роки тому

      Hi there! Yes, it would be quite a bit to fit in. Focus on maximizing independent student work time. I always begin and end with lessons/discussions, because I have 50 minutes, but you won't have time for that. I just uploaded a short-form video to the playlist For Teachers that answers your question in detail!! Let me know if you have any questions :)

    How do you ensure you meet a curriculum standard - like if I'm required to make sure all second graders understand the concept of Balance or Emphasis, could I say "as you create today keep this concept in mind" and then when they self-assess they can talk about how they did (or didn't) incorporate that concept?

    • @BigIdeasArtStudio
      @BigIdeasArtStudio  2 роки тому

      Hi Alicia! Firstly, I adhere to the National Core Art Standards which are process-based. So, to be completely transparent, I'm able to hit just about ALL of the standard requirements without a whole lot of extra effort on my part. We go through the entire art process just about every single class period - experiment, idea generation, plan, create, reflect, & share. There are certain standards I have to create special activities for. For example art history, curation, and aesthetics activities where I use a worksheet or an exit slip to assess understanding.
      In your example, if understanding is the goal, then you can create a simple activity or exit slip where kids are identifying the use of balance or emphasis in artworks. This way they are still able to create an artwork of their choice. If the goal is to use these concepts in their own work, you could have them do a 5 minute sketch at the beginning or end of class where they are demonstrating their understanding of applying it in a work of art. Again, this gives you the information you need, but still allows them to create their own work.
      Although the elements and principles take a secondary seat to the art process and studio habits of mind in my classroom, we still talk about them frequently during demos and share time, because they are really important for effective visual communication!

    Hi!! I love your content, thank you for all of the info!! I was just wondering how the Art numbers work if you need to change seats on the carpet? Do you change the number of the child? Is that confusing for them? How do you assign them? Also I am wondering how clean up and procedures work with kindergarten and children with behavioral issues?

    • @BigIdeasArtStudio
      @BigIdeasArtStudio  2 роки тому

      Hi! If I need to change seats, the student gets a new art number. :)

    • @BigIdeasArtStudio
      @BigIdeasArtStudio  2 роки тому

      I don't have K, but lots of K teachers find success by using "table centers" to help with clean up and to minimize movement throughout the classroom. So you'd set up your classroom as a studio for your older students, but then you'd have table centers that you put out just for K and then remove once they leave.

    • @BigIdeasArtStudio
      @BigIdeasArtStudio  2 роки тому

      I find full choice with consistent procedures helps alleviate a lot of behavior issues, not all, but a lot. For the remaining issues, I relay on natural consequences and leveraging how much students WANT to be in the art room. I have an area outside and some areas in the room if a student needs to work independently for while.

    Any advice on transitioning to a choice based curriculum? I am finishing up my student teaching this year but I am super interested in choice. I imagine that whatever school I end up at will likely be used to a teacher that focuses on PRODUCT not process. Can I start the school year offering full choice or should I start with a directed project (like they are used to) and slowly integrate more choice into the classroom? Basically... do I need to wean my kids off of art projects that have one right way to do them or can I just start with choice right away?

    • @BigIdeasArtStudio
      @BigIdeasArtStudio  2 роки тому

      Hi Katherine! I think it depends on the age. Older students are used to following directions and are often desperate for someone to tell them what to do. Haha So using a gradual release model for them sets them up for independent artmaking. For example, starting with theme based projects that include some choice but still provides them with direction. Then gradually giving them more and more choice over time. Younger students typically transition to full choice easier, because they haven't had years of schooling and following directions yet. However, it never hurts to start with that gradual release model no matter the age! 🙂

      @@BigIdeasArtStudio Thank you for the advice! Another question...how did your administration/school/parents respond to going choice-based? I am a bit nervous to come in to a school as a first year teacher and change everything up !

    • @BigIdeasArtStudio
      @BigIdeasArtStudio  2 роки тому

      My principal okayed the change but wasn't sure when I presented it. Once he saw it in action, there was no denying that the level of thinking and learning involved was superior. Parents were 50/50. Some welcomed it and some questioned it, but I think I could have prevented some of that by spending more time preparing them for the transition with newsletters and social media posts, etc. So, if and when you decide to change, spend an ample amount of time educating EVERYONE about the change. Throw around all the buzzwords - 21st century learning, student-centered, etc. Eventually, your students will become your biggest advocates because they will LOVE your program. 🙂

      @@BigIdeasArtStudio Thank you so much for the advice! I hate how people think just because students are in charge of their own learning that the room will be total chaos and they will get nothing out of it! I am student teaching in a classroom where the teacher is so concerned with the final product that she does a lot of the work for the students... I hate it! My internship has only solidified my interest in choice-based or at the very least open-ended art projects!

      @@mangaluvxo Ughh, I replaced a teacher who did the same thing - reworked and made the art of the kids look "better". Kids notice that and it leaves them feeling inadequate, which is sooo sad. Your intuition is right! Choice is definitely the way to go. Please feel free to reach out if you need help once you find your job!
