You’re right about modeling. It’s so important! My students always get a kick out of it when I’m teaching the routine for entering the classroom & I grab someone’s backpack and go to the door pretending to be a second grader. I explain the procedure, and sometimes act out the wrong way. They tell me what I should be doing instead, and I finish with modeling the right way. During the first week I also talk about the procedure for giving a sincere apology.

Modeling is so crucial. I also, enjoy being a Hollywood actress in the classroom too. LOL ((HUGS))

Hi, could you teach me about the procedure for giving a sincere apology? I struggle with this, as my kids usually blurt out "sorry" and leave but I can tell it's not sincere. I've tried talking with them, etc, but that hasn't worked

I completely agree! Teaching procedures and reinforcing them will make it break your school year. Don’t let them do something, even once, that you don’t want want to see. It will come back and haunt you for sure.
    ❤️ and hugs!

I teach Kindergarten, and one of my most important procedures is what to do at the small group table while waiting for Mr. Hall to get there. I may need to spend the first few minutes of Daily 5 or math workshop helping students get settled into their tasks. My small group students know to quick drill there letters and picture walk their guided reading book until I get there. This may not be a first week procedure for everyone, but important for sure. Maximizes small group instructional time and minimize opportunities for behavior problems.

Thanks so much for this!! I’m going into my second year and I definitely want to focus on this more than the last year. A common first year teacher mistake!

I just go with how my class My is each year. Each year they’re different. Some years a class can handle more than others. I can’t honestly tell you how many you should do. I would start with your top three if you feel overwhelmed or they do. When I’m teaching them I’m not just constantly teaching procedures. We have brain breaks, a variety activities we do in between too. Have a wonderful school year. ((Hugs))

Do you have any recommendations for not overwhelming the kids with too many procedures? I don’t want to overwhelm my kiddos but I also don’t want chaos. How many procedures do you normally teach a day?

I saw one of the teachers on a UA-cam channel have the students put their hands on their heads and say, "Hocus Pocus, I am ready to focus!" and I just loved that.

Thank Ms. May. I just love your procedure vid. As a teacher in preschool class, I find your advice very helpful. As your watch, I wrote a list of procedures I want to tackle in my classroom. Procedure how to use classroom materials.

    Hi Miss May,
Can you please tell me your procedure for getting their water out of the crate? Do you let them get out of their seat while you are teaching? One at a time? Thank you for your help.😊

Thank you and God bless you! My 5 year old just started kindergarten this week and he is hitting other kids when frustrated. He hasn’t hit any other children EVER except his typical “play fighting” with his older brother. Do you have any advice about how to teaching my child to not hit? I’ve already spanked him, but don’t thing that is sufficient. I’m totally caught off guard here. ☹️
