Hello! I am a first year art teacher. I have watched almost all of your videos, and have a classroom subscription on your website. All of your knowledge has been invaluable to me being able to jump right into a TAB teaching style. I would love to know more about your process for making observations and taking notes. You mentioned you write notes on your seating chart. Would you typically have a new copy of your seating chart every time you meet with students? I'm still trying to find a good system for organizing my notes, and finding ways to balance general notes for the class and individual notes.

Hi Jessica! Sorry for the massive delay. Please feel free to email me directly if you ever need anything in a timely manner! haha
Did you ever solve this problem? I bough a 3x5 sticky note pad and I would write notes on that and then stick the notes to the seating chart. That way I wouldn't have to print new seating charts, and I could file them away or toss them when needed.

This is helpful! I am a middle school art teacher in a low income, minority school where the students have had no art training when they come to me. I am only in my third year of teaching after being a professional commercial artist for 30+ years. I love this idea but I have so many questions. Do you set up all the centers before school starts then only open one at time? Where do you have kids sit or stand in the mean time? My brain hurts thinking about it!!! LOL! I need help please.

haha sorry for the delay! I set up all the centers prior to the start of school because I needed that for my own sanity, but I know others who set up as they open them. The kids enter the room and we meet in a communal area where we have a 5-10 minute lesson, and then they are called one by one or a few at a time to begin choosing their center. I have another video on this process in my for teachers playlist :)

This is a great video! I'm curious if you enter grades for those other types of natural assessments that you mentioned... artist statements, portfolios, critiques, etc. and if you have a different rubric that you use for that? If so, do students also evaluate themselves? I usually enter 3-5 grades per quarter (10 weeks) and am just wondering what grades get entered into your Student Management System with a TAB system. Thanks!

Thank you & great question! So, the short answer is yes, I enter 3 grades per quarter. 2 of those grades are self-assessments, because I want the grades students see on their report cards to reflect their own input more than my own. As far as which assessments I enter, I choose the assessments with the highest success rates and that are the easiest for me to record - so exit slips & polls are entered into my gradebook often because I can easily look at them and see what needs to be recorded. Assessments with lower success rates just show me where I need to spend more time instructing.
At the end of the year, when I enter a growth grade for the portfolio, it's an observation based on the art they've uploaded. I don't use a rubric for this because I just don't have the time to do this for 600+ students. It's a simple, "am I able to observe growth of any kind or not?" The answer is almost always a yes, and if there is a question, I spend some time observing that particular student to see if they are engaged, demonstrating the studio habits, etc.
I do have the students give themselves a grade at the end of each quarter so I can make sure we are on the same page. So, they use their number magnets to indicate which grade they believe they should receive for the 9 weeks after we talk about the requirements for each grade. This way, if my records show one thing, and they are indicating another, I can take some time to talk with that students and gather more information.
All in all, I'm not super convinced that grades are helpful at this age level, so I do what is required of me, but I make sure it's manageable and easy for me and includes the students as much as possible.
Thanks for asking about this! This might be something to talk about in a later video :)
Let me know if you need me to expand on anything!

@@BigIdeasArtStudio Thank you for your thoughtful response! I feel the same way about grading in Art at the middle school level, but do what’s required. I would love to see a future video on this and am even more interested in the opening days in your classroom and getting started with students. Thank you so much!

Do you have a pre-assessment practice to gauge students initial knowledge? I am interested in what pre-assessment would look like in a choice based learning environment? Would it be focused on the studio habits of mind, elements of art, media knowledge? I would love to hear your thoughts!

How do you have the littles self assess with a rubric? What ages do you teach? I teach prek-5th and I’m thinking of starting a choice based classroom for just 3rd-5th… do you still do all this with the really young kiddos?

I teach 1-3 grade. So, I use a visual rubric with a range of smiley faces, and usually only focus on one concept at a time. But, yes I do all of this with them.
