Fascinating process, but stressful I'm sure. Glad it all worked out so far. We are newly tuned in and excited to follow your adventures! Thank you for sharing! Keep up the awesome life! ~ Josh & Jill
Thank you for showing us your frustration. Such language has been heard coming from our boat especially when trying to set an anchor in a crowded harbour.
that's the good thing when you anchor by urself...you don't get tempted to yell at anyone ;). But I have definitely watched some good "anchorage movies" from Karl :). Ahoy, Nike
I anchor with no verbal talking with my partner. We got very good with it with a little preplanning and hand signals worked out ahead of time. Even then there were times when we would accuse each other of “yelling” when the hand signals would get more dramatic/urgent. Always fun to watch the anchor dramas with a cocktail from the cockpit as long as the drama was far enough from your own hull.
Nike, I worked in Panama back in the 80's and 90's and although the city has grown immensely since then the attitude remains the same. I was there last year and it is still a "manana" place. I agree that the bottom job was best outsourced. Wow, you will definitely gain a couple of knots after that is complete.
What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. Glad you got it all sorted in the end. BTW, the "triangle" is called a bridle. Thank you for sharing and fair winds.
Oh true, Maria actually kept saying that...One of those words I could not remember...Maybe now that I have seen it written down it will stick! Fair winds to you as well, Nike
Well Nikki, what comes to mind is it all of us boaters of any time at all on the water working with the boats and the yards is that we have some of those what the... experiences. s/v ...Waves
That wasn't swearing, you need a Newfoundlander or an Irishman to swear so that the Gods of mortal mariners paid heed. Great episode, emphasizes that its not all broad reaches, sunshine and red sunsets if you are a sailor. But the bad makes the good even gooder!! OK not proper english but you get the point.
Karl has a little beard??? Holy moly! Good thing you had help. Thanks for sharing some of the frustrations you experience. It keeps your videos real. Keep up the good work.
I was a bit worried about showing all my annoyance in this episode...but there are days / weeks like that as well and it's not just always flowers and unicorns. And it's one thing to show that you are overwhelmed, scared or lack energy...but being furious is something slightly different ;). But hey, you get to see it all ;) Ahoy, Nike
That's what makes your channel so interesting in my opinion. We're all frustrated and annoyed at times, we can relate. Glad Karl got a shave, he'll sail a lot faster and I hope the engine will run trouble free for 5000 hours!
Having lived a couple of decades in the Third World I saw nothing surprising about your experience in this episode. Not that I always kept my calm either but invariably when we go along with "their" way it just works. I cannot tell how many times I have been amazed at the developing world's ability to make so few resources work so well and go so far. I hope you are writing a book. Also I would be curious what your costs are for haul, paint, scraping and other work. Would love to compare as I was just on the hard for 3 weeks here in SE US. The haul was $2.50/ft pressure wash $1.50/ft Storage was $1.50/ft and for the right to work on my own boat was another $2.50/ft. But all in all I felt it was pretty reasonable...
Oh believe me, I am usually pretty calm and "adjusted" to the way things go here...But those two weeks, it was just an accummulation of things going wrong / being delayed and I had to change my plans liek 1.000 times and I was just getting really exhausted in the end. But I totally agree that it is amazing to see some of the stuff that people are able to do here. For costs: In this particular place, they don't charge for the haul out really. They charge per day on the trailer since that is where you sit whilst you work on the boat, there is no other "on the hard" area. It's 30$ up and 30$ down for the guys that help and it was 170$ a day for the slip. They had just raised it from 120$, which was a real bummer. For the workers that help scrape the bottom / sand etc., you pay 30$ and you buy them lunch or 35$ and they buy their own lunch (price is per day). Paint depends on what paint we are talking about...:) Five gallons of two component primer cost you 160$, just as an example. But of course that depends on the brand and what kind etc. The other marinas around with the travel lift charged 600 / 700$ for the travel lift plus 124$ a day in dry storage. I did not ask any further about workers...;). Your prices sound like HEAVEN to me :)!!! The Pacific coast in Central America is super expensive...really really really bad... At least Panama and Costa Rica, as far as my experiences go... Ahoy, Nike
Njke, Just when we were being lulled into thinking that cruising was all sunshine, white sandy beaches, and cocktails with little umbrellas, you have reminded us about the reality of working on broken stuff in exotic places. You handled this much better than than I could have dreamed of dealing with it myself. There is an American term that I think fits here. You were talking like a sailor, or swearing like a sailor. That may shock some of your followers. No problem here, that is mild for the language around my household. I was at a car race a couple of weeks ago and met three of your fans, the last place you would think to look for fans of a sailing channel. When are you headed back to Karl? It might be time for a shave. Take Care.
Heya Muir! Ah well, it was not all that bad...I was just a little low on energy at that time, that's all. Oh, Karl still has to wait a bit...poor boy. I will help Maria charter next spring...saving up some money for the Galápagos visit :). But yes, he will need another shave then! I am thinking about beaching him for the first time to get it done. There is a lovely sand / mud field just next to his morring that is calling for a trial... All the best to you, Nike
Nike, if this is your dark side, me thinks you have not lived much in the shadows of life. :>) Karl obviously was in need of a haul out and your nervousness on the trolley is what protects Karl, great job staying on top of the crew and getting it done right, well as right as possible given the circumstances.
haha, yes, definitely. We watched the preview and decided we had to rename it...I had aready forgotten how furious I was during those days because everything got delayed and went wrong...and when I heard myself yelling at poor Tito on the phone I felt really bad. Ah well, he probably got over it right away ;) Ahoy, Nike
I think I will apply for citizenship ;). Since I bought the boat, I sailed some 4k nautical miles through the Caribbean, so yes, I have gotten out of Panama...;) Or do you mean if I have left Panama since I came back with a broken engine? Yes, I left Panama after the install of the new engine and sailed to Costa Rica. Ahoy, Nike
That man frustrated the hell out of me, just watching that cluster fluck drove me insane! Grrr! He should stick to goat's, it might work out better for him in the long run. Karl is one big mess right now with a ZZ top beard, we just need a 2 sharp dressed wo -man? :)
Hi Dave & Patti, you can always see the time of the filming at the beginning of the video and the place, too. I used to have a google map...but somehow it got erased and since it was so much work to set it up, I did not get to put all the info back in yet. But I will see what I can do... Basically, Karl had been at a mooring for quite a long time...I went home working during that time (which I did not film but mentioned in the videos) and then I came back to Panama (#20 back on good old Karl). What followed, was a time in San Blas on Maria's boat Joana, where I helped her charter. But in between, (#22 and #23) I went back to Karl in Panama City to take the old engine out (San Blas is caribbean side and Panama City is Pacific side, but you can travel back and forth within a day by watertaxi and jeep). #24-#28 was back in San Blas for more charters and my sister came to visit and starting #29 I am back on Karl putting the new engine in. There had been a live feed in August about firing up the engine for the first time...but it was a LIVE feed, the videos are NOT LIVE (which is why the date when they are filmed is displayed at the beginning of each video). I am sorry if this is all confusing...but that's how it went and we are showing stuff chronologically in the episodes...and if my life goes forth and back between different places, then the videos will display the same...I hope I could help straighten out the storyline for you a little bit...and no worries, for the rest of season III there will be no back and forth between different boats anymore. Ahoy, Nike
Oh no, that's our beeps. We have kids watching, so we did not want to leave it the way it was...but we thought that you still get the message pretty well ;) Ahoy, Nike
Holy cow! How long since Karl's bottom was cleaned? I feel your pain as far as having to depend on other people. I hate it! Much rather do everything myself, but that;s not always possible in the the wonderful marine world.
Congrats! If you ever need a sailing buddy for a passage give me a shout! I have a ton of experience on a 22 and trained some on a Island Packet 32. Im looking to gain blue water experience, have tons of mechanical experience, good cook and pass federal background check every year for my airport SIDA badge. Aka not a weird-o... lol
I can see why you are stressed: You are beautiful, Maria is beautiful, Karl is beautiful, the day is beautiful, Panama is beautiful, the Pacific is beautiful. Did I leave anything out? Oh yeah, Big Red is beautiful.
Uuuuuh, long time...he was at a mooring without moving for eight months...And the last antifouling was...hm...in Guatemala 02/2015...so 1,5 years before that haul out in the video. I had scraped the bottom once or twice in the meantime in the water...but the growth in Las Brisas is really insane... Ahoy, Nike
Yeah-once it gets way ahead of you it's hard to catch up by jumping over with just a brush and snorkel. You need a friend who can loan you his scuba gear! :)
I don't think I've seen you that frustrated since you first bought Karl and were thinking of giving up. Glad you finally got on the hard. And yeah, that was a more than "a little beard." That was like a hipster lumberjack beard! LOL
hehe, I did call him "my hipster Karl" in those days. Everybody in yard was fairly impressed by his beard ;). And I have to admit that the whole repower time was a bit nerve wracking...and I am glad it's done and over...! It was just such a big job, a lot of money involved, and especially the haul out was such a "time is money" thing, that it started stressing me a bit too much. Ahoy, Nike
alignment of engine and propeller shaft..this is difficultvery good for germans to meet other cultures.it is called grow and get a perspective on others
Nike get your self a British seagull outboard 102+ long shaft they are light enough to carry around and will push big boats I have 1 as a emergency motor, also the bracket mounts in 2 places so you can make it a short shaft and use it to push a tender and they pull apart so you can stow them in bits
Ah well, we have some kids watching, too, that's why we decided to bleep it out since we thought that you still get the idea even if it's bleeped. Ahoy, Nike
I bet for a week passage on Karl that if they would excavate that hill they will be surprised! : ) Edit: I looked i up.. I guess it probably is a hill.. but.. i keep my eye on that hill, you never know in South America !
I know its all months ago now, Nike. But I think you could have done with a lonnnnngggg peaceful hot bath followed by a massage followed by copious amounts of cocktails and your favourite food after a day like that girl. Well done for not strangling anyone before the day was over ;) Well done girl!!
haha, how do you know that I didn't ;)? It was not only that day but just the past week or two that had led up to this day that had already let my anger add up more and more...And the problem was also, that there were no drinks or relaxation in sight because I knew we had at least a week on the hard where we had to work full power day and night to get back into the water as fast as possible... But after that, we had a long night out with awesome food and great drinks, followed by a relaxed day of doing nothing :). Ahoy, Nike
It was a bit frustrating, because we had asked him to put the bridal before we left and he was like "no no, it's all ok"...In the end, I think the only thing that made him change his mind was his fuel consumption ;). But he is a good dude, really nice guy. And I think next time, he will use a bridal from the start... Ahoy, Nike
Hey, good video and glad to see the progress even if it freaked me out. One comment from the peanut gallery....it’s too short and not enough “meat”. Just my opinion but it seems to be getting shorter and shorter without full context. Love your videos, don’t take this as anymore than my opinion.
Hey there, not sure what you mean. The videos are getting shorter? Well, we always try to make a video that is kinda round and tells a story. Also, we don't want to overwhelm people with boat jobs...and since at that time around the repower, there were a lot of boat jobs going on, we prefer to make the videos not too long so it can still be entertaining rather than overwhelming and boring. Actually, the videos are getting longer and longer when you look from Season 1 to Season 3. The last videos were mostly above 10 minutes, some even above 12. But it's easier, to watch a 12min video, if different things are happening...rather than 8 different boat jobs one after the other. But that's just our opinion :). I understand that some people prefer longer videos...We believe that people consider ours a bt too short because they do have the right length, it makes you want to tune in the next time :). Well, I hope to see you next friday ;). Ahoy, Nike
Why is that? for weight? I used to have it in the center, but there would have been NO WAY I would have been able to launch it from there. That's why I mounted it on the side where it's easy to throw into the water...Is there another reason than weight distribution why you think it should be in the middle? Ahoy, Nike
I am not sure you have a dark side. Or, you might have cut someone up into little pieces, cooked them, and served them as lunch to the marina staff. Berlin, London, New York...I think you know these places are somewhat different from mañaña-land.
You call that swearing? Amateur ;) Towing Karl with a dory would have been easier from alongside with fenders and lines fore and aft - but the wildlife sanctuary on the bottom will make it difficult either way.
I know it's not as warm but this chaos would never happen in Germany .... I don't think there are even any swearing words in German because problems never happen there ( don't mention vw emissions).
Fascinating process, but stressful I'm sure. Glad it all worked out so far. We are newly tuned in and excited to follow your adventures! Thank you for sharing! Keep up the awesome life! ~ Josh & Jill

Sailors and swearing go together like boats and water. Always nice to see you and the shy Maria.
I've never seen your videos before, but apparently I liked this one and it's nice to see that you aren't pompous at all.
You're NY favorite cause you actually share lots of struggles which is so helpful ! Live and learn! So excited for the documentary !
Very much enjoyed this episode. Well done Nike! Karl will feel so much better.
Hi Nike, immer schön entspannt bleiben :-)) Du gefällst mir gut, wenn du sauer bist!
Nike,

Another awesome video. You do a fantastic job, keep up the great work. Karl will be spiffy in no time. Thanx for posting.
You watch Sail Life too... Don't you?
love your videos! best of luck to you & Carl hope to see you cruzing pronto......GRUNT
You continue to amaze me.
Karl has a little beard??? Holy moly! Good thing you had help.

Let it all out Nike. 😂😂😂 Seems like Panama embrace the 'island time' concept.

Nike, your episodes are too short! Kidding. Thank you for this video!
4:45 - "I'm happy they didn't put me on the train with a broken wheel?" Oh man this was a fun episode.
So impressed w/Maria. She gets the "ABCD" award (Above & Beyond the Call of Duty).
Bien dicho aunque no bien hecho - por parte de ellos. Pues, asi es la vida. Buena suerte con estar 'on the hard,' Nike. Hasta la proxima semana.
Some days all you can do is smile, you do it well.
I did lose my smile there for a short while, I have to admit...But I recovered quite quickly ;)
Ahoy, Nike

Heya Muir! Ah well, it was not all that bad...I was just a little low on energy at that time, that's all.

Nike, if this is your dark side, me thinks you have not lived much in the shadows of life. :>) Karl obviously was in need of a haul out and your nervousness on the trolley is what protects Karl, great job staying on top of the crew and getting it done right, well as right as possible given the circumstances.
Karl really needed a shave. That may have been your most sweary episode yet. i love it!
haha, yes, definitely. We watched the preview and decided we had to rename it...I had aready forgotten how furious I was during those days because everything got delayed and went wrong...and when I heard myself yelling at poor Tito on the phone I felt really bad. Ah well, he probably got over it right away ;)

Bastien Koert
Talking like a true sailor...
How much was big red and how did you get the money
Even angry, I adore you.
I believe in the world there are no more than four women like you!
you as the boat owner tell them what you what to do never let them tell you
Jesus, that was almost Billy Gibbons beard. Nice to see Karl and you are fine.
yes, we are all well...I think Karl enjoyed the shave...
Ahoy, Nike
From our cruising, we learned FAST that mañana only means "not today"!!
that is very well explained, I love that!
Either "not today" or "maybe tomorrow" as I learned well in Argentina waiting for work to be done my motorcycle.
There is a song with "Mañana" for the title, by Peggy Lee, about things that don't happen as quickly and efficiently as some of us are used to. :-)
Yep. If one is answered "manana" be sure and ask which week?
Have you gotten out of Panama yet?
I think I will apply for citizenship ;).
Since I bought the boat, I sailed some 4k nautical miles through the Caribbean, so yes, I have gotten out of Panama...;)
Or do you mean if I have left Panama since I came back with a broken engine? Yes, I left Panama after the install of the new engine and sailed to Costa Rica.
Ahoy, Nike
Love seeing the real Nike! Great video!
Way to go girl!! Gruss aus Wiesbaden!
That man frustrated the hell out of me, just watching that cluster fluck drove me insane! Grrr! He should stick to goat's, it might work out better for him in the long run. Karl is one big mess right now with a ZZ top beard, we just need a 2 sharp dressed wo -man? :)
A beard? more like a coral reef! Good to see things happening again.
...hm, maybe :)
Bet you get an extra couple of knots sailing after cleaning that bottom!
I am so confused.. Can you start using a map and time line, so I can figure out your travels?
Hi Dave & Patti, you can always see the time of the filming at the beginning of the video and the place, too. I used to have a google map...but somehow it got erased and since it was so much work to set it up, I did not get to put all the info back in yet. But I will see what I can do...

Ahoy, Nike
hehe! In Mexico we laugh when they say "manana". cuz we know it doesn't mean tomorrow. It means "NOT TODAY"
That's why I was a tiny bit worried...but they actually held their word and we were hauled out the next day!
Ahoy, Nike
Is that your bleep? Or the video overseers?
Oh no, that's our beeps. We have kids watching, so we did not want to leave it the way it was...but we thought that you still get the message pretty well ;)
Ahoy, Nike
Holy cow! How long since Karl's bottom was cleaned? I feel your pain as far as having to depend on other people. I hate it! Much rather do everything myself, but that;s not always possible in the the wonderful marine world.

WhiteSpotPirates - I think you just added 8 or 10 knots to Karl`s top speed. 8^)
at least ;) For sure the shaving and engine install will add 6-7 knots to his speed of late which has been ZERO for far too long ;).
Yeah-once it gets way ahead of you it's hard to catch up by jumping over with just a brush and snorkel. You need a friend who can loan you his scuba gear! :)
That's what I was just thinking. ... needs paint soon?
I almost missed this episode. I arrived in Germany yesterday and didn't get the notification.
Karl definitely needed some manscaping. You'll gain at least a knot of boat speed..
I used to keep a can of nails around and would chew on them when things got stupid.
hehe, that's a good one!
I don't think I've seen you that frustrated since you first bought Karl and were thinking of giving up. Glad you finally got on the hard. And yeah, that was a more than "a little beard." That was like a hipster lumberjack beard! LOL

Not entirely certain I should hit that thumb-up button...
Title promises swearing & it's all bleeped out.
Ah well...
Excellent video anyhow.
Ah well, we have some kids watching, too, that's why we decided to bleep it out since we thought that you still get the idea even if it's bleeped.
Ahoy, Nike
Merry Christmas

Is that a pyramid in the background @5:48 ?
hehe, nope. That's a hill, actually, Ancon hill. :) But it does look a bit like a pyramid, you are right!
Ahoy, Nike
I bet for a week passage on Karl that if they would excavate that hill they will be surprised! : )
Edit: I looked i up.. I guess it probably is a hill.. but.. i keep my eye on that hill, you never know in South America !
good call! Let me know if you find anything interesting, I know some people around that could help you digging ;)
I bet it is a pyramid and its just covered in dirt.
I know its all months ago now, Nike. But I think you could have done with a lonnnnngggg peaceful hot bath followed by a massage followed by copious amounts of cocktails and your favourite food after a day like that girl. Well done for not strangling anyone before the day was over ;)
Well done girl!!

haha, how do you know that I didn't ;)? It was not only that day but just the past week or two that had led up to this day that had already let my anger add up more and more...And the problem was also, that there were no drinks or relaxation in sight because I knew we had at least a week on the hard where we had to work full power day and night to get back into the water as fast as possible...

We made sure she gotta few beers in between the crazy days 😜
It’s a good thing you are bilingual.... You can cuss at them Captain, in whatever language they truly understand! lol
hehe, and if I want noone to understand me, I jus cuss to myself in German ;)
It's scary when you have no power and have to depend on someone else and you wonder do they even know what there doing!
It was a bit frustrating, because we had asked him to put the bridal before we left and he was like "no no, it's all ok"...In the end, I think the only thing that made him change his mind was his fuel consumption ;). But he is a good dude, really nice guy. And I think next time, he will use a bridal from the start...
Ahoy, Nike
Karl the coral reef LOL
thats not a beard, its fossilisation!
Ahoy, Nike
Es kommt immer anders als man denken tuhen tut ;-)
Dontcha just hate having to depend on others...
Oh my gosh when Neldo lost his engine 😬 knowing it all turns out well I can only laugh at your misfortunes but at the time it was sh*t 😜 miss ya
Hmm, makes me think of the Hempel Silicone Antifouling....
Lighten up sweetie you got a new engine your home free
I love alpha Nike!!!
when you have a quiet time ... change the liferaft to Karl's center ...einflüstern :):)
Why is that? for weight? I used to have it in the center, but there would have been NO WAY I would have been able to launch it from there. That's why I mounted it on the side where it's easy to throw into the water...Is there another reason than weight distribution why you think it should be in the middle?
Ahoy, Nike
moi moi Nike, for safe to use to both side center center near to mast...chao y buena suerte! :)
und natürlich Ihre dunkle Seite ist brillant!
I am not sure you have a dark side. Or, you might have cut someone up into little pieces, cooked them, and served them as lunch to the marina staff. Berlin, London, New York...I think you know these places are somewhat different from mañaña-land.
I was shocked by the amount of build up of gunk and furry life forms on the bottom of Karl.
yep, he had definitely accumulated an impressive amount of various things ;).
Ahoy, Nike
My dark side is darker! 😂
Wow Nike, swearing like a sailor.
You call that swearing? Amateur ;)
Towing Karl with a dory would have been easier from alongside with fenders and lines fore and aft - but the wildlife sanctuary on the bottom will make it difficult either way.
Yuhlo Oar I hate depending on others.
Best of luck, Nike. Beer is a good stress reliever. Sex is not bad either!
all things are distractions from nothing.
I know it's not as warm but this chaos would never happen in Germany .... I don't think there are even any swearing words in German because problems never happen there ( don't mention vw emissions).
hehe, oh we have a good amount of those, too, believe me :)
or the new airport for Berlin
Tu non stai bene amico .....
i would love to sail with you
Dam girl your man needs to shave more often.
LOL, you're a real salty sailor Captain now, you finally started cursing on cam!!
Gues your mitle name is not ''luck'' !!
Nice to see (hear) that the blood can run a bit hot on beautiful girls as well.
