Fischer Indole Synthesis

- We've talked about a few heterocycles, but one important aromatic one we didn't mention is the indole. This is a component of a variety of biomolecules. So how can we make them? Nobel prize winner Emil Fischer developed the Fischer indole synthesis in 1882 to do precisely this, using aryl hydrazines and ketones. What's the mechanism? Is that a sigmatropic shift you spot in there? Yes it is! It's a fun one, check it out.

I definitely remember this synthesis, I think from 3rd year organic chemistry. I don't think we went so in depth on the mechanism for losing the nitrogen though. Very cool

Very enlightening, as always, Professor Dave. I've read that indoles are, among other things, produced by the human gut and may have effects on regulating human emotions when reacting with tryptophan. I guess what I'm wondering is that since Fischer Indole Synthesis is an important thing, what are some practical uses for indoles?
