My daughter developed full blown schitzopherenia at 18, 2 weeks before starting univiersity, she wasn't violent but she accused my husband of shape shifting ( into a horse)and raping her in the middle of the night. She completely trashed her room, it was a horrendous. Fortunality because of his job and my own job we recognised what it likely was. She was a slight thing, when we got her into A&E it took 4 security guards to hold on to her to stop her from attacking my husband who is 6 foot 6. The mind is unbeievable and devestating when malfunctioning.

So sorry to hear this Jane, mental health is so overlooked in this day and age I can’t believe it….
I have borderline personality disorder and struggle a lot with my identity and regulating emotions, it’s like a rollercoaster, like your brother, I’ve only ever truly hurt myself, both emotionally and physically, I know for others around me it must be stressful etc. I try to accept it as best I can and remind myself that this isn’t truly me, it’s a disorder, and I am not my disorder. I hope you find peace and that your lovely brother is also at peace and in a better place ❤ much love to you xx

  • @456coolkid1

Whilst I think that Sydney killing her mum was absolutely wrong and she should be punished for it, I did have some sympathy for her up until the point she decided to commit murder. I had a breakdown whilst at university but I managed to get through my studies until the dissertation where I got accused of plagiarism due to bad referencing. I was horrified by what happened and was terrified that if anyone knew they would see me as a failure so I didn’t tell anyone and emailed the university to say that the bad referencing was due to my breakdown as part of my appeal. 6 weeks later my parents found out and they were furious and I don’t think they ever forgave me for hiding it. Thankfully I managed to resubmit my dissertation and graduated from university with a 2.1 six months after I was meant to, but it was awful thinking I could have failed. I was in denial whilst the appeal was being done because I thought if I had that mark of failure then I would never have the life I want and I have disappointed everyone I know. But let me just say it would never have resulted in me committing murder to hide it, in fact I was more likely to do something to myself because if I became a failure, why should I burden everyone by existing?
Sorry for the long comment, it was just that this case resonated more with me than the other cases that Emma has covered.

Really brave of you for actually commenting your experience im glad you managed to graduate regardless when it was be proud you did graduate i didnt even go to college as i wasnt accepted due to criminal damage when i was a kid then ended up giving birth 6 weeks from turning 17 but i managed to get myself a job with the NHS when i was 19 and i still have that job now so i got lucky as the pay is better than average x

    • @456coolkid1

@@MeghanWalsh-zf3sx Thank you and well done on still having the job within the NHS, I think anyone who works in that sector is admirable and should be respected for what they do. And also well done for showing you it is never too late to change your life and I’m sure your kid (or kids) will be so happy for you x😊👍.
I wanted to comment because it is far more likely at college for students to harm themselves than other people because it is easier to get exposed to mental health problems there, and I think if Sydney didn’t kill her mother she would have hurt herself, which although wouldn’t have resulted in another death, I’m sure would have just as heartbreaking for her family.

@@456coolkid1 Bless you, and thank you aswell I haven’t worked in a while as i had my youngest almost 2 years ago and then my best friend took her own life in September 22 10 weeks after I had my youngest so it sent me spiralling and I’m just trying to figure shit out and get my life back on track before I jump back into work I’m lucky I still have the job there I think anyway 🤣 I’ve got 3 kids now and I hope so as my eldest was close to my best friend and she’s seen how much losing her has affected me but she is very understanding she’s nearly 8 and she’s very emotional bless her so I think she understands how sad it makes me as it makes her really sad too. I understand what you mean especially when sometimes you go to a uni far away and you’re more isolated you don’t know many people and that can really create or exacerbate any mental health symptoms they may already be experiencing. I do feel sad for Sydney she was clearly not in her right frame of mind and seeing her in the court room listening to all the details and her genuine remorse made me so sad ☹️xx

You didn't listen to anything Emma said lol. Your situation can't be compared to Sydneys. It's completely different. For the absolutely obvious reason that YOU weren't suffering from a psychotic episode.
Pointing out that you've experienced a similar situation but didn't murder your mother as if somehow it must therefore follow that Sydney did it through choice because you didn't choose to do the same is black and white thinking at it's worst and there's no way any other situation could be in play that could make a person behave differently to the way you behaved. 😂
If someone isn't mentally capable of choosing not to do something in the moment, how do they require punishment rather than treatment? I imagine that in such cases as this the punishment will be a lifelong awful nightmare of realising you murdered your mother. No prison time is required for that to occur. There's no debt to society to repay because obviously Psychosis isn't a choice.
I'm by no means someone who thinks murderers should be given leniency BTW. It's just that in some cases, it's extremely obvious that the person was very ill, and without that illness wouldn't have committed the murder... my best example of that is the mother suffering from extreme postpartum Psychosis who killed her children... was her name Susan somethint. Very famous case.
She was described as being the most mentally unwell person her psychiatrist had ever treated. For some reason I can't remember her name but I'm sure you know who I'm referring to, Emma has covered her case. She's one of the very few murderers, especially child murderers, who I feel any empathy for. And for her I feel a great deal.
Sometimes, locking people up and throwing away the key can make us feel better, but it's simply revenge really... when there's real and obvious mental illness, we do everybody including society, a huge disservice in not recognising the difference, and by incarcerating them in prison rather than sending them for treatment (which may very well be for the rest of their lives as is the case for the mother I referred to).because in prison they can't be learned from or receive the care they need and the environment will likely exacerbate and exaggerate the issues.

I think the family’s take on Sydney will prevent anyone from understanding who she is because we’ve been told only of her academic accolades by them. Is that all they base her character on? Did she have a history of being dishonest, how big was her sense of entitlement and ultimately had Sydney ever experienced consequences for her negative actions and behaviors throughout her life -
No child ever was perfect. The Powell Family is lying to themselves because accepting the offender as a daughter and killer is intolerable, and their insistence on calling the guilty verdict and sentence an injustice has a ring of arrogance that this inappropriate.
Yes, Brenda would have died for her daughter, but that does not give Sydney the right to kill her. Shame on them for expecting no consequences for murder.

Having had pyschosis my family used to say that they could tell when I was nearing an episode by my physical appearance, therefore I understand knowing as a rational person somethings not real yet whilst in the grip of my psychosis I genuinely believed the things my mind was telling me which led me to behave in sometimes a violent nature as well as experiencing horrific paranoia directed at my closest family members. So as a parent if my child inherited this form of mental health and unfortunately killed someone I as their mother but also as a victim of psychosis wouldn't want to see them imprisoned but to hopefully be held in a mental health unit until deemed safe enough to be released and to have monitoring within the community. Its a no win situation both parties lose and in the middle of all of this is a family who's life's will never and could never be the same.

I just want to say thank you Emma, for trusting us enough to share your story. It can’t be easy to talk about something so traumatic, and knowing that people on the internet can share their opinions about something so personal can be scary. And thank you as always for all of the hard work you put into these videos and always making sure that the victims of these crimes are heard and remembered ❤

Is this a mistake? Why do I have 3 Emma's since Sunday? I'm not complaining, I'm absolutely delighted! When I'm in work on Sunday and Wednesday, I always have my eye on the prize which is Emma's new video coming in the evening.
I think tonight's suprise may have been a mistake but I'm sure we're all happy 🎉
Me and my daughter saw Emma in Liverpool last year. Even though her talk was interrupted by a brief power cut and a drunk heckler, she was amazing.

When you are a devoted fan, you only know what day it is because Emma posts a video…. Then she randomly, and wonderfully, posts on a Friday causing momentarily confusion about the day of the week. 😂

I believe that they were lenient on Sydney, but the law is the law, and because of the crime they couldn't just let her off. I do hope that she continues to receive the help that she needs for her mental health, and learns how to better handle life.
I have a brother who has finally been diagnosed as bipolar. I do not know the details of the diagnosis, but I do remember how harrowing it was growing up with him. It took years, he wasn't finally given the bipolar diagnosis until he was an adult, and throughout the years went through a slew of diagnoses and medications. He also I'm pretty sure also had attachment disorder due to the volatile adoption process he had to deal with through the first couple years of his life.
I do not know exactly what behaviors could be attributed to each problem, but he often would yell, scream, and throw things at our mom. He wasn't trying to actually hurt her, he just wanted to stop the things he didn't like or understand. His behavior was only ever directed at mom, and even in the middle of one of his episodes, he knew how scared it made me, and would make sure to not accidentally do anything to me. Right after an episode, he would seek me out and apologize, and hug and comfort me in spite of still being in that mental state. People see things as black and white, but as you said, when you live with someone with those type of mental health issues, it is never black and white. Based off of his interactions with me, people would say that he had to know what he was doing, and how dangerous it could be, but just looking in his eyes, you could tell he didn't know, he was simply reacting.
I do not know Sydney, I was not there when the events happened, but it is entirely possible that she had a psychotic break and did not know the consequences of her actions, but then still do some things like coming up with the intruder scenario. I know with my brother, he was honestly scared and confused after one of his episodes, and I could see Sydney's reactions when the police came as a similar thing especially if she'd never been diagnosed with an issue before, or had an episode and was experiencing all this for the first time. I feel for her, mental health is a huge issue, and there's still so much we do not know.
