Dude, I've been wanting to do this for years, but I was very reluctant. I saw your video, bought the same fan, and followed the same steps. I had a couple of hiccups, but after one hour it was working flawlessly. I was surprised I was able to buy the same fan model in Japan, but it was available. Unless you have a sort of death wish, you should ask for help from a friend who does things like this often because this stuff is expensive, and a slight wrong move could ruin the whole thing. Thank you!
That's awesome you could find the same fan model! I agree, my friend John definitely gave me the confidence and guidance to be able to do it. I wanted to do it for a year or so before I actually gave it a go. Thanks for checking out the video and for taking the time to comment, it's very much appreciated!
You’re welcome! I haven’t personally done this on a 192 but what I’ve heard from others, it seems similar, if not the same. This article has some good info that I hope will be helpful: www.production-expert.com/home-page/2014/8/26/how-to-change-the-fan-in-your-avid-192-92-or-hd-io.html
Hey Josh ! Thanks for the great video ! 4xHD I/O here and I need to move them to a new studio where I don't have a machine room anymore that I'm having here (here my studio is completely(!) quiet without any whisper of a noise at all)....as I will have them in the control room then, what's your experience with the new fans after a while ? And did you check the specs of the original "Avid fans" regarding air flow volume before going with the Noctuas? I'm asking because I've already built in Noctua fans into other units but often - despite indeed being super quiet - it turned out that they wouldn't deliver sufficient air for that particular unit....hence sacrificing capacity for noise level - which can be quite dangerous for electronic devices (especially mounted in a rack), at least in case the manufacturer chose his fans (and their air flow volume) rather close to what's needed as a minimum cooling air amount...looking forward to your feedback...! Uli from Germany
Hey Uli, thanks for checking out the video! That's a great question about CFM and is definitely important to consider when replacing a fan. The original fan in both of my Avid HD I/O 16x16 was a COFAN F-8025M12BII which has a CFM range of 29.54-46.75. The Noctua is around 33 so it fell within a safe range. I haven't had any trouble with my Avid since replacing the fan at all 👍🏼
@@SeawellStudios Thanks for your quick feedback ! Just to get that right for sure: As I've seen you've replaced the fan with only two lines - does that mean that the fan is always spinning at max (which still seems to be very quiet then) or does the mainboard of the HD I/O still manage the fan speed depending on the actual temperature inside the unit ?
@@uliauer7117 Keep in mind that the original fan only had 2 wires connected as well. The noctua still adjusts the speed as needed just like the original fan did, it's just much quieter!
@@SeawellStudios Great ! Just wasn't sure about that (the original also only had 2 cables) But what's your experience now regarding the new fans - are they spinning high sometimes ? And if yes do you still would describe them as almost inaudible in that range they reach? And also if that happens, how would you rate your general room temperature ? I mean is it a room with AC-cooling and if not was the high-spinning happening in obvious relation to sth like a busy or crowded recording session with the room being heating up significantly ?
@@uliauer7117 My room does have an HVAC unit so it is climate controlled. The Avid sits in the rack right behind me that you can see in this video. Before swapping out the fan, the noise would really bother me. Now, I never even think about it!
is it possible to run the avid IO without the hdx card is the IO when powered work i mean feeding the analog input with a signal and taking this converted signal away with the aes ebu digital io into for exemple the lynx aes ebu card i now this is complicated i hope you can answer this question is the ad da of avid working without the hdx connected
Unfortunately I think the answer is no. I can't think of a way to get to any of the options of the HD I/O without having an HDX card connected and set as the playback engine. I'd double check with Avid just to be sure though!
if you put a signal into the analog input if the meters plays without the hsx connected i think you can take the signal from the digital IO aes ebu to another aes ebu reception i'm asking because i don't have the hd is the meters playing when you put a input signal without the hdx connected ?
@@rachidajewher8649 The AES output is usually assigned to one pair of channels(if you choose to use it) in the I/O software menu. In other words, all analog channels don't sum to the AES automatically so at best, you'd only get 2 channels of analog input going to the AES output so I don't think it would be a very useful interface outside of being connected to a HDX card. It would be great if it had a USB or Thunderbolt connection as an alternative but it doesn't.
If you re-connect the original fan, does it work? The reason I ask, one unit that I replaced the fan on actually had an issue in the fan control circuitry. I thought the old fan had died but the new fan didn’t work either.
Hmm., that sounds to me like maybe one of the wires isn't quite pushed far enough into the connector. When pushed all the way in the should click into place and then if you pull on the wires gently they shouldn't back out of the connector at all. Sorry it isn't working out for you so far but hopefully we can get it figured out!

Hi Josh. Happy this model is working for you. I did some research and the Noctua A8 FLX may work too. Are you familiar with this model?
I haven't tried that one yet but thanks for letting me know! I'll check into it.
I did this upgrade 9 years ago works well
Nice! It's great to hear from someone that has done it with success such a long time ago. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for making this really helpful video Josh, do you know if it is the same for the Avid 192 interfaces? Am guessing it would be

Analog summing! yes yes, same here.
Still makes a huge difference in my opinion!

Sorry to hear that! Are you using this exact Noctua Fan model(NF-A8 PWM)?

Wish I could plug via thunderbolt or usb. It’s just paper weight now.

@@SeawellStudios I didn’t have hdx I have hd2. (2) cards also. I have the complete system.
