- Hi Guys, in this video I build lots of realistic Scatter Terrain that you can use in your games of Warhammer 40k or Necromunda or similar. I try to treat this as I would any other project and give Scatter Terrain the same attention I would to any other build. Hope you enjoy! Wanted to get this video out while I work on mega build inspired by my recent trip to Norway. Coming soon!
I recommend papier mache for bin bags...wetted black paper around a ball of any old paper in much the same process here. The added benefit is that it does not require the use of a flame and that the bags sag and lean realistically...they can even be mashed into corners or leaned against walls etc.

One way to add variety to their shape is to stuff them with disposable items, like cheap beads or buttons.
The fiberglass repair mesh available at Halfords for a few quid makes great chain link fencing as it is already a diamond pattern. Cutting lengths of wire coat hanger make perfect posts for them too, especially as you can cut slightly long and drill holes for them in the basing material to make them really secure. The storage bins to skips is a great re-use of existing materials, bravo!

I loved every piece, but my two favorites are the pallets and little trash bags. The trash bags were brilliant.

pro tip, any wall or long baracade piece of terrain like the fences and barricades work really well if you cut the corners off so its easy to put them at 90 degree angles to one another. it really helps set up the battlefield in a realistic way and minimizes the gaps between the pieces

Yeah scale can be a bit of a challenge but many of the basic principles still remain the same.

I love this! These aren't supposed to be functional, but I have to say - the bottom side of the pallet should have fewer slats. You need empty space for the wheels of the pallet jack, otherwise you'll just end up prying the boards apart.
I know haha I used to work in a warehouse and shifted countless pallet while there but for ease of building I kept it simple. Appreciate the feedback though

I had been looking for little storage drawers (the kind that come with their own organizer, not as spares), as they make great houses for a postapocalyptic steampunk market, and all I could find was the kind you show as dumpers, but I love the idea.
I think the black plastic is a must for the bags, but I’ve seen people fill them with battle spice (what you collect from the floor after several days of kitbashing and crafting, like gross sand made of micro offcuts from wood, paper, cardboard, epvc, xps, silicone, etc, with dust), and then superglueing the twisted and cut top of the bag, safer than melting it with heat...
Those storage bins to dumpster is outstanding! I really dig the fencing, maybe add some razor wire at the top?

Definitely going to use the trashbag build and the trash bins for some scatter terrain in Reality's Edge. The bins and barrels would work well for This Is Not A Test. Good stuff.

Minor Nitpick: skips get scratched to bits as they are handled by cranes and slapped onto the back of trucks. Should be rust chips all over those bois.

Although chips can be simulated rather expediently by dabbing on metallic paint with a stiff brush or a sponge.

Love your trashbags especially! I wonder if you've perhaps looked into using a rotary cutter for doing strips? It's used in quilting/sewing usually (where I used mine) but it works well for other thin things as well
Yes I have thought about it many times, but I have been trying to find a good heavy duty one that would cut card. Toying with the idea of getting a band saw which essentially would do a similar job as well as solve a few others at the same time but they are not cheap haha. Good tip though and thanks for watching

When capping off tubes, I've always found it easier to stick a square of card/plasticard etc to the ends then trim to match the diameter after the glue has set.

Haha I love it. No man, I am forever burning my fingers too. I do have a low temp setting on my glue gun which helps but alas if its not sticking them together with superglue then its burning my fingers with hot glue. Tis the price 🖖👍

Matchsticks would make better fence posts mate...you can also make your fence posts pointed. Coffee stirrers give your posts a flat look...fruit bags make perfect fencing material as well...😁👍
Nice tips man. All personal choice I guess. Even I will do something one way one week and then the next week for no reason whatsoever I will do it differently. Makes no sense but we are all complex beings haha.
Liking the pallets & full bin bags... I thought "wow, how easy & effective" but still couldn't think of it, also saw another of your vids where you make ruined buildings from polystyrene inserts. Another costless effect for corrugated steel panels....cut the flaps from a cardboard box & wet them(but don't overdo it) until the outer & inner surfaces come away from the middle corrugated part, let it dry then you can cut away at your own leisure then paint it accordingly (rusted effect always works) although these days I'm kinda leaning towards buying the necromunda terrain sets of stairwells & walkway

Those were great builds! That rust stuff is like magic too,, maybe next time if you were doing a similar project, for variation, barbed wire would look great on top of the fences and barrelled around some of the barricades and you have to put a mattress in one of the skips haha
Funnily enough I had ordered some barbed wire but it took ages to arrive. Will use it next time

This is ridiculously good!! It’s got to cost hundreds if not thousands to commission for something like this? If you were charging £200 per day, got to be a weeks worth of work?? Very inspired!!
Thanks, this was for a friend so the fee basically covered materials, but yeah... that is the dilemma in many ways. The time never will be equal to the money. £1000 is crazy money for a terrain set. I also have a background in fine art and if I paint a painting, I wouldn't think twice about selling it for £5000. It may take a week or so. None of it makes sense really but thats life I guess. I occasionally take on the odd commission but mainly i build stuff for the love really. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment. If your interested, in something shoot me an email.

Your pallets are fancy ones. I’m impressed at how you made so many. I got flashbacks to when I was a scenic carpenter and had to build a lot of pallets for an H&M event. Not miniature pallets for me, but regular sized one. Oh, it was horrendous.
Yeah they were a bit fiddly but patience and some nice music and I'm good to go.

As an aside, the bottoms of pallets usually only have one crossbar in the center (so three slats, as opposed to the top’s 4-6)

Love it! Great work as always. I’m doing my brick walls and concrete just getting the hang of things. I made a mistake with a thick application of oil based paint and it’s still not dry after several days. I’ll probably sand off most and re-paint.
Yeah careful with oil paint. Its wonderful stuff but if it is in any way thick, the outside can cure quicker than the inside and it will never dry. There are additives that any good art shop should sell which will speed up the drying time a lot. But only the ti instead amount is needed. But if in doubt get some white spirit and wipe it off with a cloth. Should get most of it off. Good luck man

My favourite way of making barrels is to chop up garden hose, and fill it with hot glue.

Cheers dude, in all truth I can't remember, from some online hobby store ages ago, but its starting to run low. So I need to reup myself. Shouldn't be too hard to find, I think its used for movie props and that sort of thing.

I found some cheap 3d printed ones from etsy.i think I got 20 for £5 or something like that. I have since kindly been gifted a 3d printer to review and can now print my own. But etsy is a great source for bits and pieces. Hope that helps 👍

Hi, how do you make your rust effect? Thank you for the video.
I paint a small base of brown and orange mix with acrylics and then use my favourite rust product - 'Rust' by Dirty Down. This creates a really nice matte effect as the product reacts with air. Cant recommend it highly enough.
Great use of those storage hoppers [often useless for their intended purpose] but great as skips/dumpsters. The empty one with a few black bags is a great extra detail. I'm rather worried in case those barrels leak Lol!
I've just looked up that rust stuff online & I'm wondering if you've found a way to make the stuff permenant without spoiling the effect. The website says its not permenant and to use varnish with care - what would be your experience of this? cheers.
Hiya Keith, thank you for your kind feedback and glad I could inspire you in some way. The rust product I use is from a company called dirty down who make products for film props really and while it is described as semi permanent, once on it is pretty permanent in my experience. You do need to use it as a final layer as anything else on top will reactivate it so a little planning maybe necessary. I have never tried to varnish over the top of it but if you do try let me know what happens haha. Good luck with your projects 👍
