Ghetto Blaster is also what they called the large audio tape players/boom boxes that young people would hold on their shoulders right next to their ears in the 80's. Brown planted his foot right where one of those would be, alongside their head.
As a kid growing up in the 80s I thought they looked badass, as an adult when I realized what that apparatus was I was appalled. 100% suspicious of Vince wanting this.

Agreed about the part where Hogan should've came out and brawled with Andre to the back to get him away from ringside. Savage should've been able to have his moment in the ring with Elizabeth with the title to end the show. Savage was the champ...keep him front and center.

This guy was a true athlete and a world class Judoka. As much as I hated this character growing up, I now respect him more as a fellow Judoka and a pro wrestling legend. R.I.P. Allen...
He was a very early version of Stone Cold Steve Austin's gimmick. The bad thing about Bad News was he couldn't take bumps and his knees were shot by this point.
Looking back at all the characters I despised when I was a kid makes me kind of smile, because that was like the biggest honor for those guys. Brown was completely over as a heel I both hated him and found him terrifying.
Bad New Brown/Allen was such a character ahead of its time. ECW/attitude era he would have did amazing. Plus he and Hart had a wicked feud in stampede.
Just a quick note: the world record for what Dino Bravo attempted (called a raw bench press) is somewhere around 770 lbs at the moment. The 1000+ lbs V1 notes is with the aid of a bench shirt (called an equipped bench press), which you may notice aids the lift CONSIDERABLY. This summer there was a legitimate attempt at an 800 lbs raw bench press, but the bar was misloaded and the guy was injured in the attempt.
It's super obvious in the footage from the 1988 Royal Rumble that 200 lbs worth of plates were fake. the light doesn't hit it the same as the real plates on the bar. It's so obvious they actually edited the segment, along with the Harley Race vs Haku match from the official Coliseum Video release.
I believe the reason that Hogan walloped DiBiase with a chair in the main event was as payback for DiBiase cracking Hogan on the back with a chair during Hogan's match against Andre. Every review I've ever read about WrestleMania IV complains about this "dastardly act" by Hogan, but it makes perfect sense really, because he gave DiBiase a taste of his own medicine. ...and this is probably the only time I'll defend something Hogan did in the ring that nobody else liked. :)
But he whacked Andre not DiBiase with it which just smacks of bad sportsmanship. Horseshit Hogan seems to cheat back in most matches, which makes it weird for him to have the hero image.
It makes sense on a rational level, but it does not make sense with a true baby face. If it had been a retaliation shot for something that had happened in the moment it would be easier to pass off. But the real good guys do not lower themselves to do things like that. Like others have said before it would have worked better if Hulk had chased off Andre and we got a clean finish and a straight celebration. Even if Hulk sat at ringside for 5 minutes and then chased him the payoff would have been better.
The crowd was dead for most of the show because they were none wrestling fans mostly. They were just rich guys at the casino. WWF got money for their tickets.
On a related note.....I remember being very young, and screaming at the tv when Valentine flipped his shin guard over, I couldn't figure out how I was the only one who noticed and figured out he was cheating!!
You do realize that the business is a work and Vince booked that because Hulk could give more of a star rub than anyone by far...as well as to start the angle that drew their biggest buy rate for 10 years right? Hulk didn't choose that and even if he did it made all involved millions of dollars. Smart fans are the biggest marks of all lol
@@nirvanajunkie19 hulk was a dick and wouldn't let anyone outshine him tho, macho getting out over as champ was a smart business move as he had just as big a fanbase as hulk. Kids like hulk but adults liked macho

I don't care how bad this one is looking back. I was 8 when this came out and I loved Macho Man. 8 year old me thought that Macho Man was doomed having to fight every round and considered One Man Gang as super dangerous. Leading up to this One Man Gang had been doing squashes on Superstars. At least now I can still smile cause I love Macho Man and even Hogan being in the ring does not completely ruin it for me. Oh and Liz, god talk about a life time crush. Don't see any video of her for a few years and you forget just how beautiful she really was.
Matilda is no dummy. She knew not to bother with Heenan. One, he had a dog-catchers suit on. Two, he wasn't managing. He was in the match. So there was no reason for her to attack him. She made her presence felt at the beginning, but at the end there was no need. On the other hand, there are 2 videos on here of managers interfering and costing the Bulldogs. One where Johnny Valient trips Davey, and one where Jimmy Hart hits Dynamite with his megaphone. In these cases, Matilda went right after them. She bit Johnny V's foot, and she grabbed Hart's megaphone.
I wonder if Bobby had some sort of smelly snacks on him that god Matilda to chase after him? Seemed like she loved going after him and that would be a good way to do it.
Slick once broke his arm when he fell over being chased by Matilda. Serves him right as he had been jabbing her with his cane in the dressing room to wind her up. Apparently she was also scared of Jimmy Hart's megaphone and would go wild whenever she heard it.
Also Ventura was gaining a lot of mainstream attention due to the popularity of the movies "Predator" and "The Running Man" so Vince was pushing him as an attraction.
I always assumed they were running late on the next segment, so used Jesse to kill some time. I don't know. A long time since I saw the actual production.
I loved Demolition's Theme music thier theme song is one of the top 10 WWE Theme entrance music of all time and one interested fact the same Artist that did Demolition's Theme Song also did Hulk Hogan's theme song
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but there weren't 2 entrances. There was only the one Warrior ran down. There was however an aisle way off that ramp that guys used during their exits. Love the reviews.
Seeing everyone start to stand up and get excited as Savage is climbing up to the top for the flying elbow. Loved that. Also, notice Trump sitting on the front row clapping after Savage wins the championship.
I absolutely love going back and watching these old reviews. It’s like reliving my childhood and having a crac with my best friends. Keep up the great work fellas and looking forward to another 12 years of OSW!
The big reason why the Roberts V Rude match was so shit is most likely due to both of them knowing that they weren't going to be going forward in the tourney so they just threw something together and didn't need to try.
It's sick seeing hogan transplant himself into the main event, and not letting macho man have his moment of glory. But it's his way of preserving his career
josh posh hogan didn’t even need to do this to preserve his career. He was Hulk Hogan for fuck sake! He would have been fine! Guys like Cena and the Undertaker are still huge and when they appear, they don’t demand main events.
Vince McMahon booked it that way to plant a seed for Wrestlemania 5. It wasn't Hulk's call. Seeing as Wrestlemania 5 drew more buys then any other show until Wrestlemania 14 I'd say Vince made the right call.
@@nirvanajunkie19 That's a really dumb comment, like it's not all scripted. Though it wouldn't surprise me that overacting Horseshit Hogan was involved in the decision somehow.

The ref does see a chair and ted in the ring before the chairshot. Match is a clusterfuck. So is the ppv. I loved this ppv as a kid, as an adult it only kinda works.
@@MS-it9vv depends. I respect a lot of long form matches more as an adult. I honestly get more out of stuff like Flair/Steamboat as an adult as a kid because of the nuances they toss it. Wrestling is one of those layered arts in that way.
Kurt Juergens Yeah, except Bret destroying the monitors and equipment was after the PPV went off the air and was never shown until 2001, including showing Bret sign WCW in the air
HTM was such a great heel back then. He was so dang over. He had a southern mid card heel style. And he worked his gimmick perfect. They should have kept HTM around. The idea of repackaging him is dumb, and I hate dumb stuff.....
Hogans chairshot at the end makes perfect sence...They screwed him out of the title with the twin ref and got him dqd out of the tournament so this was hogans revenge screwing them out of the title
I know this was years ago, so maybe you guys know by now that it was Gorilla Monsoon who gave Bret Hart the "Excellence of Execution" moniker. Monsoon used it on commentary occasionally for a while until gifting it directly to the Hitman.
There's actually a really good reason why bob eucker looked so bad here. He'd had a major heart attack on the set of Mr, Belvedere during the filming of season 3 in the winter of '87, he missed several episodes but returned a few weeks later. If you go back and watch the episodes that were filmed after he came back you can clearly see that they're using pancake make up and really flat lighting to hide just how bright red his complexion is.
@@LadyCoyKoi You have a point but as far as his WWF reign of being top dogg it faded out going into Wrestlemania 8 people were more into Wrestlers like Macho Man,Bret Hart, Flair,Undertaker etc
@@chessl9876 Yes, this was 27 years before he was known to be a racist (hence, looking back, it’s now good WrestleMania IX was his last WrestleMania appearance, at least in the 80s to 1994 ‘golden’ era of the WWF, and that the 1993 Royal Rumble was the first Royal Rumble without him) [this year - which ends this Saturday - was the 28th anniversary of the end of the ‘golden’ era of the WWF, and of the last year the series 1 to 6 figures of the Hasbro WWF toy line were available]. The series 8 and 10 (the latter was the penultimate series of the Hasbro WWF toy line) figures were gone from toy stores in the middle of 1995, and, interestingly, the last series, of the Hasbro WWF toy line I saw, in toyshops, was series 9, in 1996 (this series, including the entire Hasbro WWF toy line in general, was discontinued by 1997). Getting back to why the crowd are praising Hulk Hogan, in this PPV (WrestleMania), it’s only because they don’t know, yet, that he’s a racist (as, back then, that’s why Miss Elizabeth was his manager, until the following year’s WrestleMania, when ‘the Mega Powers exploded’). The 1st of May, next year, will be the 20th anniversary, of Elizabeth’s death.
@@chessl9876 And yes, it was still good seeing the Undertaker beat Hulk Hogan, at the 1991 Survivor Series (where, even though the Triangle of Terror had broken up, by this point, post-the same year’s SummerSlam, Hulk Hogan, finally, lost the title, which he won at WrestleMania VII, where the Undertaker won his first title), especially with the assistance of Ric Flair, who (rhyme unintended) placed a steel chair, under Hulk Hogan, for the Undertaker to pin him (the late Paul Bearer additionally interfered, for the Undertaker’s ability to become the new champion). As the late Jack Tunney wasn’t able to prevent a repeat of Ric Flair’s interference, at ‘This Tuesday in Texas’, when the Undertaker and Hulk Hogan had their rematch (despite Tunney’s efforts to prevent a repeat of Ric Flair’s interference, and even if Hulk Hogan won the title back, from the Undertaker), it’s additionally now good that Tunney quickly stripped Hulk Hogan of the title, and put it up for grabs, at the 1992 Royal Rumble, where whoever won that year’s Rumble would become the undisputed WWF champion (and it’s now good Ric Flair won the 1992 Royal Rumble, as I’m aware how that made Hulk Hogan feel). I’m aware (rhyme unintended) Ric Flair was champion until WrestleMania VIII (he was champion again as of September - one month post-the 1992 SummerSlam, when he knew about Macho Man Randy Savage and Elizabeth divorcing - not only in the storyline, but additionally in real life, hence Ric Flair took advantage of Savage’s divorce, and was able to regain the title, until later losing it to Bret Hart, who, when retaining the title at the 1993 Royal Rumble, would be the WWF champion until WrestleMania IX). When Ric Flair won the title back, in very early September 1992 (very shortly after that year’s SummerSlam), that’s when he brought in his new ally (hence making his WWF debut), when celebrating his victory - the late Razor Ramon. I’m aware 1993 was the first year ‘King of the Ring’ became a PPV (until 2002). I still would have loved seeing Bret Hart have Hulk Hogan in the Sharpshooter (as I wouldn’t be surprised if Bret Hart really hates Hulk Hogan). The crowd would definitely be cheering Bret Hart, and booing Hulk Hogan (exactly what fans wish they saw at WrestleMania IX). It’s definitely good that the 1991 Royal Rumble was the last Royal Rumble that Hulk Hogan won. Sorry about the length of my comment, but I did want to post my awareness of the ‘golden’ era of the WWF (and, looking back, times it was now good Hulk Hogan lost) [and when you mentioned Ric Flair, the Undertaker and Bret Hart].
@@chessl9876 I just remembered a third thing to say - Hulk Hogan’s other (first) loss / defeat at Survivor Series (in other words, the first / other time he got beaten at Survivor Series) - it’s now good, looking back, that, not only he got counted out, in the initial Survivor Series (in 1987), but especially that the late Andre the Giant was the match’s survivor (when he got counted out, it took me some time to know what the late Howard Finkel meant, when he said ‘if Hulk Hogan does not leave now, he will award the match to Andre the Giant’s team’ - I’m now aware it meant that, even if the late Bam Bam Bigelow - the remaining member on Hulk Hogan’s team, didn’t get pinned, counted out or disqualified, or fall to submission, the match would end now, with Andre the Giant, and the late King Kong Bundy, as the two survivors). I’m aware this, and 1991, are Hulk Hogan’s two defeats, at Survivor Series (I’m aware, looking back, how fans now wish Sergeant Slaughter, who was managed by General Adnan, but hadn’t yet recruited Colonel Mustafa, won the final match, at WrestleMania VII, where Sergeant Slaughter would have retained the title, which he won from the late Ultimate Warrior, at the 1991 Royal Rumble, and, again, was managed by General Adnan, but hadn’t yet recruited Colonel Mustafa, and that the Triangle of Terror won the ‘match made in hell’ handicap match, at the 1991 SummerSlam, but, again, fortunately, Hulk Hogan would finally lose the title, to the Undertaker, at the 1991 Survivor Series).
Watching again. 27:56 - I like how the ref fully witnessed Slick pulling down the top rope, and then gives him a minor warning, after which, Bam Bam gets counted out.
Thanks a lot for doing this amazing work! you are my favorite channel for audio wrestling review! and even though I am French I understand your puns! OMG Miss Elizabeth looked so lovely and nice! Demolition theme is so awesome!
The Ghetto Blaster is actually a double team move consisting of a Backbreaker followed by an elbow drop from the middle rope as the opponent is resting on the knee of the other guy
I wish the Bulldogs would have wrestled under the "Freebird Rule" and had Matilda replace Davey or Dynamite whenever needed....and she should have been the 3rd partner, instead of Koko, and only have her in the ring with Bobby like in mixed tag matches.
Matilda only goes after managers who interfere. Like Jimmy Hart and Johnny Valient - those videos are on here. In this case, Heenan had the dog-catchers suit on....plus he was a match participant. So Matilda didn't go too hard.
Okay....She was a mascot of a face team in a time period when they would have only be facing heel teams with heel managers. You're not too clear on what your point is supposed to be. If you're trying to say that Matilda wouldn't have gone after a manager unless they interfered than that is a pretty easy thing to pull off during a match.
Valentine was a much better wrestler when he was younger. And he was a real good tag team wrestler. But he wax washed up at this point. And Steamboat deserved a much better match than this. And the finish was GARBAGE! I bought this PPV when it originally aired. We all hated the finish
1:27:25 - I've heard this on other videos as well. I'm pretty darned sure that Vince never actually understood the difference between an atomic drop and a backbreaker; I've heard him call an AD a 'backbreaker' about a half dozen times.
Have just started going through the whole run again. I've got to this review and heard V1 mention Dakota Darsow and it triggered in my memory this was the 1st review I watched as it came out. Then it dawned on me I've been watching osw for 10 years. That is mental.
I think back in the 70s and 80s an outfit like that of Demolition was more associated with rock bands like Judas Priest or maybe outlaws like Zed's gang in "Police Academy". So that's why Demolition worked so well.
I'm sure you've found some videos but just appreciate how much better the editing and these lads commentary get as they stick with it for a couple years!
I think it's funny that the Road Warriors are so renowned for their wrestling even today. People give Cena shit for his limited moveset when Hawk, who was the better of the two Road Warriors, had an even smaller arsenal. The Road Warriors were over 95% for their look. And that's cool, good for them. But they were not good wrestlers and their selling is infamous.
All these young kids try to rank this as the worst wrestlemania. I was 8 years old and my dad who didn’t give a shit about wrestling took me to watch it at a closed circuit arena in Green Bay. Still one of the best days of my life 35 years later and my favorite mania!!!
Anyone else confused how Bam Bam Bigelow can possibly get counted out when he's getting struck by his opponent? In every match I've seen that interrupts the count.
30:30 - "THANK GOD TRUMP IS A HULKAMANIAC WHO WONT HOLD ONTO MATERIALISTIC POSESSIONS!!" I can't even make a joke about this line, i believe i may be overdosing on irony here...
OK, so here at 1:12:06 is the BREAST shot, er........I mean the BEST shot! 😉😍 They should have ended the ppv and this point and stopped filming altogether 😉😍😍
1:03:00 Demolition's look came from the character of Humungous in Mad Max 2 - The Road Warrior. Humungous's look came from gimp wear but nobody at the WWF realised this until years afterwards, they just thought Ax and Smash looked like cybernetic sci-fi movie villains.
The designer on Mad Max 2 was an Australian who had spent the 1970s living in London hanging out around the SEX boutique that Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood ran (where the Sex Pistols got their start) and a lot of their designs were based on underground gimp wear. The designer used these ideas for the characters of Humongous and Wes in the film and various American Wrestling promoters in the 1980s ripped the film off for gimmick ideas.
45:00 Of course Greg the Gastank looks better in the second match - he takes 60 minutes to warm up! Imagine how good he would have been if he had made it to the final!
Weird hearing some of the criticisms. As a Macho Man fan, to me this is the best Wrestlemania of all time, and it’s not even close. The tournament idea felt new and fantastic, and I felt like you guys no selling how awesome that was is rather disappointing. The drama of the night was unmatched at that point in history. This show’s format and roster was an incredible introduction to the WWF for new fans of the era.
@@OSW So here’s the thing… and let me preface this by saying… I just was recommended your channel by a colleague, it’s fantastic, and I’m binging much of it while I work. So regardless of what I say below, please realize I think you guys do a great job. So it really hasn’t been all that long since I’ve seen this one. I can say my counterpoint is that I’d argue it doesn’t have to “hold up” by todays or the attitude era’s standards… it was working on a completely, completely different standard …and set of rules. Now whether you guys appreciate that standard, or agree that is the proper lens through which to view it; that obviously would affect your view of this. The crowd never seemed even remotely dead to me, except during the Jake / Rude match. It just didn’t seem like they were mic’d up. No emphasis was placed on the crowd noise. Its background, and just there because the crowd is there. Most of the fans I know aren’t particularly focused on that in 1987, we don’t care what the crowd is doing and I think the production reflects that. We care what the greatest announce Duo of all time is saying, and what’s happening in the ring. In the attitude era the fans reactions became something people dissected. Mic’d up crowds, fans with signs, fans hijacking matches. In 1987 the crowd was just there. The whole thing is, in the first few wrestlemanias, I’d never even review based on “dissecting match quality” or “booking.” The matches each tell a story within the larger “glitz and glamour” product of the times. And it’s a very 80’s product. The story of the night is the million dollar man trying to buy the tournament, and the macho man as underdog running the gauntlet, having to wrestle what was perceived as monsters in every round, and defying the odds, until he gets to the last match fair and square against the man who is the opposite, who bought his way there. And then who comes in to make sure the villain doesn’t win? Macho’s “buddy” the hulkster, who had been cheated by the villains earlier in the night. Creating one of the greatest teams in wrestling history. Not “Hogan won’t leave the ring,” but this is AMAZING seeing these two like this, as we fade to black. None of the move by move in These matches matter. It’s fun to review them this way now, but It was purely, 100% the stories being told by the unparalleled roster of larger than life superstars. And I’d argue one of the best rosters ever just because of the personalities. This is how I and I’d say most kids of the American 80’s viewed these guys. The Hammer falling down the way he did repeatedly wasn’t lazy and annoying.. it was a literal brick wall of a man, and that was one of his character attributes. Like one of the novelty characters in Mike Tyson’s punch out falling to the mat his own distinct way. The snake guy… the guy who cuts your hair if you lose, every one of these guys was more about the presence, style, and mannerisms than anything else. And that rocked. He’s not Greg valentine the “worker.” He’s a larger than life superstar, who literally takes on the attributes of a human hammer. He’s hard to beat because he is a hammer. He falls like a hammer. Bob Uecker? In America at that time he was beloved. Vanna White? She was literally one of the biggest stars in the country at that time. That was huge that she was on there. So does it hold up? From the way I grew up, it more than holds up, because it was a different type of product, where this type of storytelling was actually far more fun to watch than one where we analyze the matches move by move. I myself never even began to look at wrestling like that until AFTER Hogan left, and the whole company changed with the rise of Bret and his contemporaries. And even then, I never began looking at the earlier product through that new lens. So to many it holds up Big time, if you love larger than life characters, great commentary, and “the hero’s journey.”
I get it! I know this one was hated but the tournament made it my favorite of all time. The idea of Macho surviving brutal matches and scratching his way into the final was terrific as a kid. I love the whole elimination tournament concept so this WM really worked for me.
THANK YOU!!! finally someone who gets it. You literally stole ever word right out of my mouth. There’s no way you can try to review this 25 years later. The excitement behind the title being vacant for the first time ever is what made this such a big deal. And NO ONE was thinking about match quality. It was about the story through the night, and it was awesome!!!

I think similar happened w Perfect vs Taylor at a PPV Taylor jacked his knee on a leap frog so they just went right to the finish lol
Small Nugget: Owen Hart
This brings back some memories of watching this on TV decades ago - a touch of nostalgia is just what the doctor ordered.
Who held the smackdown bench press record?
I believe the reason that Hogan walloped DiBiase with a chair in the main event was as payback for DiBiase cracking Hogan on the back with a chair during Hogan's match against Andre. Every review I've ever read about WrestleMania IV complains about this "dastardly act" by Hogan, but it makes perfect sense really, because he gave DiBiase a taste of his own medicine.
...and this is probably the only time I'll defend something Hogan did in the ring that nobody else liked. :)
K Law : I agree with you on this definitely
Yes! Thank You!
K Law Plus Dibiase & co. Screwed Hulk out of the title
I hope you guys do a 'Wrestling is Awesome' segment with Mick Foley as The Boulder in Avatar The Last Airbender!
This is legit THE most cocaine inspired Hogan promo ever lmao
That promo was WILD!! MY word.
The crowd was dead for most of the show because they were none wrestling fans mostly. They were just rich guys at the casino. WWF got money for their tickets.
Yeah, it never made sense to me why they would let Savage win with Hogan helping him by cheating. It makes Savage's title reign seem less legitimate.
I thought the same
Hogan sabotaged nearly every Savage reign in some capacity
Can't help but think that booking is the result of Hogan politicking.
Cuz andre was cheating getting involved hogan evened the odds
Vince loved to cram Hogan in every nook and cranny, regardless of the audience’s consent.
Scariest gimmick in the history of Wrestling? Greg Valentine's head and face...Christ
On a related note.....I remember being very young, and screaming at the tv when Valentine flipped his shin guard over, I couldn't figure out how I was the only one who noticed and figured out he was cheating!!
Nice of Hogan to let Macho Man have his moment. (Sarcasm)

That dog had such great psychology
I wonder if Bobby had some sort of smelly snacks on him that god Matilda to chase after him? Seemed like she loved going after him and that would be a good way to do it.
Slick once broke his arm when he fell over being chased by Matilda. Serves him right as he had been jabbing her with his cane in the dressing room to wind her up.
Apparently she was also scared of Jimmy Hart's megaphone and would go wild whenever she heard it.
57:40 they let Jesse pose to give him a Wrestlemania moment because he never got one due to his blood clot issues

The Honky Tonk Man was amazing. Everything he did was hilarious.
How can people not love this.
It's sick seeing hogan transplant himself into the main event, and not letting macho man have his moment of glory. But it's his way of preserving his career
It's not acceptable straight up, do not try to make it acceptable with your BS
josh posh hogan didn’t even need to do this to preserve his career.

I just noticed that Monsoon introduction said the cassette. I wonder what the live ppv looked like
I know this was years ago, so maybe you guys know by now that it was Gorilla Monsoon who gave Bret Hart the "Excellence of Execution" moniker. Monsoon used it on commentary occasionally for a while until gifting it directly to the Hitman.
Yes he called Ricky the Dragon the "Excellence of Execution" at WM4

37:17 something about Andre the Giant and Mario music entering the ring is hilarious! 😂

Yo! I'd love ya to watch this ppv, and then tell us if it holds up? Seriously editing this episode made me want to quit the show. Let us know!
@@OSW
So here’s the thing… and let me preface this by saying… I just was recommended your channel by a colleague, it’s fantastic, and I’m binging much of it while I work.
It’s fun to review them this way now, but It was purely, 100% the stories being told by the unparalleled roster of larger than
life superstars.
Correction! Looks like I meant 1988. 😅
28:15 if this was my last match, I would go for the pin and say screw it
I’m a simple man: I hear Guile’s theme from Street Fighter II, I like the video.
