  • Individuals with essential tremor (ET) may experience significant tremor of the hands, which can impair a person's ability to perform daily tasks, such as writing, drinking coffee, and eating.
Focused Ultrasound is a medical imaging treatment for patients who suffer from essential tremor.
Focused ultrasound is performed while the patient is awake. It is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure that involves radiofrequency-focused beams of acoustic energy-to heat and destroy a small, targeted area of tissue in the brain without harming adjacent tissues. To ensure patient safety, focused ultrasound uses an MRI thermal imaging system that measures temperature changes in the skull.
This procedure allows the physician to perform a safe and effective non-invasive therapy with little to no harm to the surrounding tissue and with minimal side effects.
Cheers to Jordan who can now drink, eat, and write after his focused ultrasound treatment!

I truly appreciate the video presentation of FUS treatment. I am suffering for over forty years from either parkinson or essential tremor and I'd love to have my condition corrected. But unfortunately the FUS procedure is not avilable in my country Papua New Guines. Wish I have money to come over to USA but sadly I don't have it and thinking of the cost involved could be beyond my reach and is very frustrating. Would very appreciate your advice and how to go about it. Thankyou so much and God bless.

That is so me! I have had these tremors since the age of 14, which have worsened as I age. I am now 70 yrs. of age and can no longer drink from a cup without holding it with both hands and can no longer write. My head shakes all the time and my stomach jumps as though a baby is kicking very hard. No medication seems to help and typing is getting difficult as well. Unfortunately, there is no such treatment in Maine. :(

IT CHANGED MY HUSBANDS LFE. He had the HIFU - High Intensity Focused Ultrasound on his brain to burn the area causing his Parkinsons tremors. It not only helped his tremors but his cognitive, feeling of falling forward, does not drag his leg and his arm moves again. IF YOU HAVE PARKINSONS LOOK INTO IT. I have my husband back and while it does not cure Parkinsons it has enabled him to get back to a normal life.

In the literature that I have read there is significant risk to the focused ultrasound treatment. I had lived with essential tremors for more than 20 years. A year ago I underwent a surgical procedure called Deep Brain Stimulation. I judged it a much safer procedure because not only was it preceded by an MRI, but the surgeon could physically determine the location do the motion center in the brain by manipulating the probe. The real bonus was that both sides of the brain were corrected in the same procedure.

My father had the surgery as well. He still shakes terribly. I’m trying to research this now to see if he’s still a candidate after having a probe implanted in his brain. I do not want to see him go through brain surgery again. Not to mention they only did one side of the brain. They can only do one side at a time so I’m wondering about what you said. My father wants to get the other side done , I feel the risks of having brain surgery plus having 1 or two implants in the brain not to mention the box also implanted that you have to charge for the rest of your life and have future surgeries to have the battery replaced could be better. Also the cost is far greater if you can even afford it. This seems so much safer and better. I hope my dad is a candidate ❤

Please do your due diligence with this procedure! I had mine done in S. California and only met the Dr
in person the day of the procedure. Otherwise only by internet. If you can’t eyeball the Dr before the procedure, run! I met him just before the procedure and i immediately felt uneasy about him. He was aloof, seemed unsure of himself. At that point what was i to do? Anyway, I was on the gurney prepped and ready to go.
The Doc starts the ultrasound and zaps me 5 times, for 3-4 minutes stopping for a couple minutes to check my progress. He increased the intensity of the ultrasound each time. By the fourth zap the ultrasound was bouncing around on my forehead giving me great pain down to my eyes. I hit the emergency button and it took them about 20 seconds to turn the ultrasound off. Back to the 3rd zap: the ice water cold pack on top of my scull stopped circulating and I could feel my skull warming up. They stopped the ultrasound and fiddled with the coldpack. Then back to ultrasound. I was feeling pretty uncomfortable, but the 4th zap happened as described above. The team coerced me into the 5th zap where I again hit the emergency button. The long & short was a $1200 bill, a stroke and inability to walk for 4 weeks. Didn’t find out about the stroke until a week later at home!
REALLY check out your Doctor’s expertise and ask many detailed questions about the procedure itself. By the way, my tremors are worse than before! Good luck!

PARKINSON'S Disease has been said to start in some young teens. Might be worth checking out. I was having Tremors back when I was in my 30's but some of the symptoms went back even more years. It's more revealing as we age. There shouldn't be calcium in the Basal ganglia of the brain. I have Parkinson's now.😮

If you're on medication and the tremors are still present, then this treatment is something to try. You need to find a neurologist that would be willing to send you out for the treatment. In the mean time, hang in there. When things get tough, step back, relax and try again.

Hi Marwa. There are two types of medications for this disease which both just help you to manage it not curing it. I tried both. One of them is beta-blockers(slows down your heart rhythm which eventually slows down your tremors) and the other one is basically epilepsy pills(this blocks certain parts of your brain. I didn't like this one too much as I was feeling like dizzy all the time). After years, I decided to continue with half a pill beta blocker every morning. (for now)
