Excellent presentation. Thank you. I have struggled with ET for over 50 years. People can be rather cruel to those of us who shake.

@@przeba I was on beta blockers at one stage which helped, but not now as they would interfere with my heart meds.

I have ET. I avoid nearly all social interactions because I'm so tired of the looks and whispered comments. Or even the direct questions: "why are you so nervous?" "Do you know that you're shaking?"

I appreciate this dude's presentation of the causes and research for ET, the fact that he actually cares. My doctor screened me for anxiety and told me it was probably nothing, extremely frustrating.

I'm 71 and my ET slowly started 5 years ago. I read that Magnesium helps the conductivity in the brain and it helped steady my hands for a long time. Now my ET has started progressing, and the doctor gave me Primidone, which helped at first but, now, has little effect. Thank you for the vid, looking forward to a better solution.

I have Essential Tremors. They started 30 years ago. I started with 50mg of Primidone per day and 20 years later was up to 1500mg per day and the tremors kept getting worse. I had DBS Surgery 5 years ago. Nobody can see any tremors - when I turn the device on. It was a life saver for me and would have it done again, in a heart beat. That surgeon gave me my life back and I am eternally grateful.

I have had tremors since I was a young child, probably 7 or 8 years old. It seems to have gotten much worse over the years. So much so to the point that when I saw a Neurosurgeon for an unrelated condition, I inquired about possible treatments for my disorder. He basically said beta blockers or deep brain stimulation are the best treatments. I started taking a beta blocker sometime later and it barely took the edge off so I gave up.
My symptoms generally stay the same all the time, just progressively gotten worse over the years (I'm 34). It gets worse when I do any kind of fine motor tasks, when I get nervous, when I consume stimulants like caffeine (obviously), or during any kind of exercise. It affects my hands mostly, but when it gets really bad, it affects my entire body. But the worst part is my voice, jaw and neck. If I get even the slightest bit nervous my voice trembles. I've had so many bad job interviews and have missed out on excellent opportunities. It's the most embarrassing thing in my life and I wish I could make it go away. I need to see a specialist that KNOWS essential tremor...

Hey, no worries. You’re young. By the time you get older and the tremor gets bad (if it worsens - hopefully it doesn’t) there will be various treatments to help you out.

While there is no cure, you can try to ask your doctor for beta-blockers based on your symptoms for a one month trial to see if they will help with your tremors.. Beta-blockers worked for me; while my tremors were not completely removed, no one in my family or friends even could see them see them anymore. I wish you the best of luck! I hope this helps you Bella! Kai :)

I've gone through everything you say and it sucks, the worst part is that once you have gone through one of these situations it sticks in your brain, and before you even experience it again you get anxious and it gets worse.
Good luck, hope one day there's a cure for it.

Dr. Plotkin, I have tremors in both of my thumbs all day off and on for 4 months now and I'm Eplileptic. I have been on Keppra for 4 years now, epilepsy was new onset 5 years ago. I'm 50. Could my tremors be due to my epilepsy? Thank you

Wow! I really enjoyed this. I am curious though and will have to pay more attention and see if my tremor is side to side or up and down. I hit my head on ice when I was 6 and still have a nasty bump and scar. In my late 20's I would get squiggly lines in my eyes, then tunnel vision, then sometimes a migraine. They went away after a while. My voice and head shake. I live near Huntsville, TX I think maybe I should make an appointment.

It seems that I have shakiness in both of my hands however it seems to affect my left hand more and my right hand is very minimal to the point I wouldn't even say it shakes. The shakiness only occurs when I do certain actions, however, I have no shakiness when they at rest. Also sometimes when I drink something sometimes my lips will tremble but other than that it seem fine. I don't have any problems with balance, and I am not rigid at all. The trembles do get worse if I get very nervous or if I get a adrenaline rush. Also on my mother's side of the family, it is known that there is some anxiety problems, with me being always anxious about health and minor social anxiety. Does this look to be Parkinson's, or some other condition? Or could it just be essential tremors caused by health anxiety?
Edit: I'd also like to add that the tremors are so minimal its like they dont exist at some points but my health anxiety makes me obsessed with it.

Sounds like ET to me. I'm not a neurologist nor a doctor, but I have a mild form of ET. It's a little in my hands and mostly in my arms. They only shake when the muscles are "called into action", so to speak. I also have slight balance problems, and a awkward gait. People have commented that I walk crooked. My tremors are noticeable to others when I have to exert my arms, like lifting weights (my arms shake really bad when doing a bench press, for example). When my kids were younger and I would hold them, my arms would shake. They could feel it and thought I was either nervous or would drop them. Also, adrenaline makes my arms and hands shake more. I remember one of the arguments I got into with my wife back when we were dating. My arms and hands started shaking pretty bad and she asked me why I was so scared. I didn't know it was ET back then, I simply said "I don't know. My arms shake when I get worked up".
Anyway, I suggest seeing a neurologist. Once I got my diagnosis, everything made sense.

I experience shaking of my head in an up and down movement, mostly when I'm socially anxious. It tends to happen when my muscle transitions from a holding movement to a releasing movement, such as when you voluntarily nod in agreement. I can sort of voluntarily put my neck muscles into an involuntary twitching at will. Do you think this is ET? It affects my work life, mostly in meetings.

I don't really agree that it is uniaxial. I have all symptoms correlated to essential tremor, but my hand shakes horizontally. unless you're saying it can shake side to side as well, but only one direction at a time.

The only relieve i found is pot. since dr, dropped my case, three puff and my shakes stop for 16 hrs. Legs and arms can shake from hand mouvement to full bend of the elbow. Depending on the day .anti histamine would make things really bad, since i drop that med. i put the cane away ,

Why did you not mention focused ultrasound. Living in the caveman days. Dbs... very archaic. I am a retired physician. Don't know when you produce this video. Please do an update. I had focused ultrasound down on me at the University of Utah. I am completely 100% trimmer free. On my right side only. Prior to that my Tremors were on a scale of 10. Please make this more aware to the general public they are on the verge of curing Parkinson's and brain tumors with this procedure.

A disappointing and misleading statement on the part of the presenter. Overall the presentation is interesting, howbeit poorly presented.
