This is a great example of "Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game." I'm glad I was a child in an era where I could trade plenty of YU-GI-OH cards as well as other collectibles like Pokemon Tazos.

I got into collecting cards very recently (at least collecting for real this time) with Paldean Fates. The shop I buy the cards from is really cool and nice to hang out in. I got asked by someone if I would like to trade and he had some cool cards from the set I didn't have yet. I am very happy with those trades and the cards feel very special because I got them by interacting with other people. It's a nice feeling to meet others with the same interests.
I loved Pokémon cards when I was little, I use to trade and play with my friends but when we both got older we lost interest. I have got back into Pokémon recently, literally today.
Cardflation is the worst thing that can ever happen to a child pokemon card collector. I remember having cards when i was 7 and 8, and they would have like 50 to 120 hp and do damage from 10-30, and if lucky, 60 damage 😅 (back between 2006-2011) Level X was the best csrd back then, now its just so much that i can't anymore. Also, congrats on getting the youtube partner program for this channel! 🎉
I have rarely found a story that mirrored my experience of Pokémon. I remember the first games coming out but didn't play until the second gen, and everyone else made fun when they grew out but I never stopped loving them. I am so glad you got some trades. I remember trying to compete in the Pokémon tcg and not having the right cards one year, and then coming last place the next year. But I was so happy just to be a part. I've not traded since 2007 though.

I know how you feel I felt sad when I went to my first Pokémon league in 2022 and I could not get many trades because I didn’t have many desirable cards, but I feel like getting to be the person with the coolest binder is what makes collecting Pokémon cards fun. I love showing off my front binder page full,of typhlosions.
This was a really well told story and one I think a lot of people can relate to. I remember Pokemon cards got banned at my school too after some kid's binder got stolen, then one day everyone just kinda started bringing them back in again and nobody really cared. But it sure did feel rebellious! I'm very grateful I had friends and acquaintances that I was able to trade cards with not based on some pricecharting values but just based on what cards we liked. Nowadays everyone is so hellbent on making sure they make money off trades that the spirit is just not really in it anymore. A natural outcome, I think, but still just kinda sad.
thats so true me and my friends would use custom rules ie no energies required to attack and although we would take turns attacking wed allow "every trainer for themselves" and even had 2 "gym leaders"
My most intimate memory of Pokémon cards dates back to when I was in 6th grade. My last year of elementary school. I was really starting to get into the franchise by then, and my home room teacher would condition me to behave well in exchange for Pokémon cards (my mom and said teacher made arrangements). I also would try trading cards with others in order to get ahold of select cards. I let those fall by the wayside as I focused more on the core series games but it was fun. While not at the same scale as before, I'm in the middle of buying a small number of cards for a new collection. It'll contain ten reverse-holographic cards -- one for each of the ten types recognized in the TCG -- of Pokémon I like, and then I plan to include at least two cards of beloved characters in the franchise. With you in Texas and me in Oregon though, I'm afraid I don't know how to trade with you, Glitch.

For me, I didn't get back into collecting again until I was in senior year the again after college. Now I'm going to collect until the very end! It feels like card game communities are always more likely to be toxic than the games. Like you don't really see people stealing other Pokemon games to steal their Pokemon, but with card games it just seems a lot more prevalent that people will be trying to take advantage of you, I myself quit Yu-Gi-Oh because someone went through my deck and stole my favorite cards. Props to your mother for not letting you make a terrible decision by giving away your prized suicune for a common Clefairy (that wasn't even real, the desperation of that guy) definitely a "best mom" moment.
I remember them being banned in 2016/2017 since they became popular again from the Pokemon GO craze, me and my friends were trading together at their house. I still have Mega Charizard EX, Mewtwo EX, and a few others from trades at the time. XY Evolutions was probably the most common set from around that time, shocks me that they are no longer at stores anymore.

Seeing some of the other comments, I now feel incredibly lucky my elementary school went the opposite route and made a full Pokemon Day where we could bring in cards, games, and toys to trade and play with each other.
got back to collecting recently again and had the same "issue" when I went to a trading event. Don't bother buying "cheap" cards. Nobody wants them it's so sad that everything is about value nowadays.
Seeing videos involving card openings like say from PokeRev or hearing a story like this really makes me feel like it was good to come back into the TCG collecting again. Hearing your story is also getting me psyched up for when Trader's Day happens here on Guam on June 2. XD EDIT: If there's ever a time where I experienced what you did in Yokohama, it was the first Trader's Day I attended. While I had my cards from Gens 1 and 2 stolen when I was younger, what cards I built up later in life were considered "vintage.". Arguably the two cards that kept making people flock to me was owning the crown jewels from Double Crisis of the XY era, Team Magma's Groudon EX and Team Aqua's Kyogre EX.
Trader's Day?? That's so cool! I hope you get some cool stuff that day! I barely have any card left from the XY sets, though I would definitely try to find something in my collection for a trade like that!
@@TheGlitchLogs Yep, surprisingly a lot of people collect the cards and will trade any extras if someone is so inclined to look. That first Trader's Day I attended was in February 24 and seeing so many people from kids to adults was satisfying. Just about everyone were surprised with how old most of my cards were; alongside the two cards from Double Crisis, the one card most of the collectors were practically asking if I'd consider trading was the Gold Secret Rare Reshiram card from Legendary Treasures.
I got back into pokemon around the covid boom. I sold quite a few cards as a reseller, but wanted to learn to play the game. I've been playing for about 6 months now and went to the L.A. Regionals last weekend to compete : ). I recently created a trade binder and took it to locals tonight and did a few trades for the first time in 20+ years!
Yokohama is so nice…you trade binder was fire, but people that go to those events are just too extra lol. I don’t think my trade binder could get but one or two from that curated binder. Great video!
When I was a kid I somehow obtained a Shining Charizard card. One day I was showing it off on the playground when some kid told me how ultra rare it was. I turned to face him and proceeded to chew off a corner of the card and asked him how rare it was now. Little me just wanted to watch the world burn I guess.
I was at a trade show today. Got a few nice trades, but it is quite discouraging to find that a lot of people: 1) Only want to sell (I really wanted to remind them we are at a "trade" show!!) 2) Only take trades "in their favor" (which IMO is really no different than just selling) 3) Only looking for a very narrow niche (i.e. only 151) and nothing else I am always looking for people to trade reverse holos. I had 2 full ETBs but only 1 person traded reverses with me. I feel like a lot of people are boxing themselves into enjoy only one part of the hobby and they're missing out on so much.
Cards never picked up where I am from, but Tazos were really huge, I remember in second grade I was trying to get some to trade me a Pichu that had fur, there were some special fluffy-plushy Tazos that were pretty cool.
Man this brings me back, for me the Pokemon TCG boom happened in middle school (showing my age). So as dumb middle schoolers we treated pokemon cards like drugs. It made it worse b/c I lived in an area where pokemon was a few years away from Pokemon being deemed as the work of the devil. So imma sorry, I might have played a part in the Pokemon TCG being banned..... Funny thing is, everyone wanted a Charizard but I really wanted a Venusaur. Venusaur > Charizard any day in my book.
When you said you and your friends played by your own rules for the card game i laughed because that was the same with my friends. We had no clue. They are not really fans anymore of Pokémon however I never stopped liking it lol i love the mainline games but i have no clue to this day about the rules of the Pokemon TCG. It’s a foreign concept
When I was at Tucson Games and gadgets I managed to get a Whute Kyurem and Plasma Druddigon for two regular rares. Though I mainly gift cards to my neices and nephews.

I WOULD TRADE WITH YOU!! I love the old cards…I’m in the UK a very quiet area and though there is a group for card games nobody hardly comes for Pokemon anymore. It’s also just hard being a girl in general and being into Pokemon, in secondary school I asked a group of guys if they’d teach me they card game in response they just looked at me funny and declined. Same in college, guy who took interest in Pokemon and bragged about whatever he was doing to his friends, I asked if we could be friends and once again a funny look.

@@TheGlitchLogs at the time, hell yes, because i didn't have a lot of cards. In retrospect, it was a lot of bulk and holos that i ended up pulling multiples of before ever pulling a charizard again. It definitely wasn't first edition. The excitement of pulling it was unforgettable. I had allowance money and rode my bike to walgreens to finally buy packs after school. I rode back home so satisfied, that i had the one card nobody else had in the neighborhood. I didn't even care that I was late to baseball practice and dad tripping. Lol. I was the coolest kid, I traded it for whoever offered the most. I was no longer the most popular kid but I now had a binder and much closer to catching them all.
one of the guys at my local card shop is a school teacher, and he told us about kids down to the age of 8 years old are now looking up the price og there cards and trying to make money off trades. i think this ruins the fun, when i was that age i made the worst trades ever but i was happy because i liked the card i was getting and they liked the card they got. it was never about money. anyway i like the format u made this vid in keep it up 😀
I just want to join a trading party. They look so fun. Also i remember i was waiting on the school bus and this one kid was really hungry, i was too. I was about to open up some Doritos but he saw me and offered to give me an umbreon card for them. I did and i still have it. I have some other stories: One time i handed my deck out so someone could look at it and to give it back. They did so and i lost the glaceon and leafeon burger king cards on top. I just recently got the leafeon card just like it and got the glaceon one a while back and lost that binder unfortunately. Another happy ending was that i recently found a mini binder from my highschool bookbag. One card i was happy to see was the Espeon ex card, full art landourus and thunderous card.

The first time I pulled a charizard, in 4th grade, I traded it for an entire binder from a kid on the block.

@@TheGlitchLogs at the time, hell yes, because i didn't have a lot of cards. In retrospect, it was a lot of bulk and holos that i ended up pulling multiples of before ever pulling a charizard again. It definitely wasn't first edition.
The excitement of pulling it was unforgettable.
I had allowance money and rode my bike to walgreens to finally buy packs after school. I rode back home so satisfied, that i had the one card nobody else had in the neighborhood. I didn't even care that I was late to baseball practice and dad tripping. Lol.
I was the coolest kid, I traded it for whoever offered the most. I was no longer the most popular kid but I now had a binder and much closer to catching them all.

one of the guys at my local card shop is a school teacher, and he told us about kids down to the age of 8 years old are now looking up the price og there cards and trying to make money off trades. i think this ruins the fun, when i was that age i made the worst trades ever but i was happy because i liked the card i was getting and they liked the card they got. it was never about money. anyway i like the format u made this vid in keep it up 😀

I just want to join a trading party. They look so fun. Also i remember i was waiting on the school bus and this one kid was really hungry, i was too. I was about to open up some Doritos but he saw me and offered to give me an umbreon card for them. I did and i still have it.
I have some other stories:
One time i handed my deck out so someone could look at it and to give it back. They did so and i lost the glaceon and leafeon burger king cards on top. I just recently got the leafeon card just like it and got the glaceon one a while back and lost that binder unfortunately.
Another happy ending was that i recently found a mini binder from my highschool bookbag. One card i was happy to see was the Espeon ex card, full art landourus and thunderous card.
An Umbreon card for Doritos sounds like a kid classic to me, glad that you still have that card and the Glaceon card!
