    I'm still new to this area. Actually just recieved my LTC in the mail last week! One thing that has been on my mind most lately, and especially in regards to purchasing a firearm, is that I am left handed. Watching this video was kind of a breath of fresh air because it is rare for me to see other "lefties" shooting. Thanks for the extremely helpful information. I found this because I searched about malfunctions and issues and found this. Thank you.

    I stumbled upon the strip mag double feed clearance by accident on the range right after I bought my first Glock in 1991. Several years later (about 1999) while training at the now infamous Blackwater I pulled my accidentally learned magic strip double feed clearance in front of three instructors that were teaching the class and got a WTF are you doing response. During the lunch break they were trying it out and by the afternoon they were on board with the accidental magic. New techniques are often the result accidental learning.

    As far as I know, Clint Smith has never taught to lock the slide while clearing a double feed. I can personally attest that in 2001 he taught me to strip the magazine without locking the slide. I do agree that if you recognize a double feed, then there is no need to conduct a tap-rack-ready drill nor is there usually a need to rack the slide multiple times in order to clear the chamber.
    From my limited experience, the most important component in clearing a malfunction is not to delay. At the range you often see people just stop and stare at the pistol when it malfunctions. You must train yourself to take immediate remedial action if the pistol fails to fire (for whatever reason). If you have a shooting buddy, load each others mags and put one (or several) dummy rounds in some of his mags.

    Great tip on the double feed and I will give it a try. I am a competition shooter and I've had all of those malfunctions occur during a match and them some, like pinching your palm in the magwell with a compact gun. I was taught to look at my firearm when I have a malfunction to visually assess then act to get back in the fight. I also just assess, rack and bang on a click.

    I agree with most of what you've said. As far as the double feed, for those that are wise enough to carry spare mags....I cannot agree with reinserting the same mag that you had a double feed with. Unless its extreme circumstances such as your on you last mag. The rest of your double feed clearing is right on but I personally would drop that mag and grab a fresh mag...with the exception of extreme circumstance I mentioned before. Reinserting the same mag, to me is increasing the chance of reinserting a possible problem back into the weapon. Hard for me to make sense of that. If it is the only or last mag available it sucks but it would be the only option. Tis why I as a CCW civi these days I still carry two spares, (any less seems irresponsible for my paradigm).

    Looks like you've got Warren Tactical, fiber optic front sight?
    I currently have XS 24/7 standard dots on my EDC Sig Sauer P320c.

    First off, that cop experience with rotating rounds blew my mind. Never thought that could happen and I am still skeptical but I stopped unloading and reloading everyday for other reasons and now my gun is chambered 24/7 365 with the exception of maintenance.
    As for the double feed with the slide still under pressure, don't you think this can widen the mag lips causing more malfunctions for the future when clearing it like that? I have come across mags with wide lips and the bullets tend to just slip out easily when its out of the gun, so I can imagine when its in real use.
    Lastly, I don't get to shoot often but have shot enough in my life. I'm middle aged. All the failures you showed I have dealt with but when you say common, I don't really think that applies to me because the most common issues I've had with centerfire rounds and hollowpoints particularly is a different fail to feed. This one is when the chamber is clear, the round begins to cycle but the tip gets stuck on the feed ramp. Has this mal ever happened to you? This can happen during shooting or just racking the slide. And I think its happend to me more just racking the slide. I have found that this mal is attributted to a bullet tip that is flared or wide open ie Golden saber ( wide mouth ) vs. Hornady Tap ( small mouth ). Seems like the wider mouth has more contact area on the feed ramp and cause it to stick than the smaller mouth.
    Although I have had it happen with smaller mouths like the Win PDX1 Aka ranger a very few times, but predominantly happens with the wide mouth tips. Has even happened with flat nose rounds like .40 caliber range rounds. So now when I look for rounds to carry, I take that into consideration. I am not 100% sure this is the cause, maybe its a mag issue or something else but I feel this was the problem. So it would have been cool if you talked about this.

    First off ... great videos and you just won yourself another subscriber.
    Do you address failure to feed as a separate drill at all? Some people teach to hit the slide from behind to force the round into battery, but I have found that that more often than not ends up banging a round that can"t actually fit into the chamber so tight that what could have been a simple tap,rack now becomes a major operation to resolve.
    Your objective approach is inspiring. Thanks

    Great video, I am a bit reluctant to to drop my slide on a round in the chamber, as there is a high risk of damaging the extractor. At the same time I want to be proficient at dealing with a “stovepipe” if it ever occurs. Maybe having a spare extractor that I only use for this type of practice is the way to go. Thanks for your UA-cam videos, much appreciated.

    A couple young women were shooting in the lane next to me at the range a while back. They had a Hi-Point 9mm. I saw them standing there together messing with the pistol as I was getting ready to leave. They asked me if I knew how to "fix" their gun. I looked, and it was a double feed. I locked the slide to the rear, then I pulled the mag out. The round in the chamber fell out through the bottom of the mag well.
    One thing I noticed was that straight blowback pistol had a heavy spring in it when I went to lock it back. Possibly the only good thing about the pistol, though, is that the base pad on the magazine is HUGE, so no problems pulling it out of the pistol. It would be interesting to try this method with that Hi-Point--not that too many serious practitioners are going to be carrying one.
    The worst pistol I ever had when it came to clearing malfunctions was back when EAA first came out with their polymer-frame Witness. I bought one at a gun show--after stupidly selling a nice FAL rifle. It had a shortened frame, so you could use lower-capacity mags and conceal it more easily. Or you could use the full-size 10-round mags with a spacer on the bottom so they fit flush. That thing would double feed like crazy--never made it through a single mag without one happening. I can tell you that those CZ75-style pistols with the slide down inside the frame are a bitch to deal with in that situation. You're trying to get a good hold on the slide, and it's hot and there's not much to grab hold of in the first place. My love affair with that style of pistol ended with that experience. And the pistol ended up in a pawn shop. I feel sorry for whoever bought it.

  • @MtnBadger
    @MtnBadger 3 роки тому

    I agree with your reasoning. There is a time when too much "insurance" is either moot or even detrimental to the situation. A life defending situation needs to happen as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
    As for your method of stripping the mag, ejecting the problem round, reinserting the mag, etc., I must have been on "the fast track" because that was the only way I was tought from the beginning, a long time ago, in the military. Yuup, it works great. So much so, that a company was founded on the principle of being able to strip a magazine that may be tough to extract. You may have heard of it... It's called.. Wait for it, "Magpul..." lol. The little piece that attaches to the bottom of your magazine started an empire.
    But seriously, there is something that needs to be addressed as the "tap, rack, bang" drill is sweeping it's way through training schools and ranges.
    If you're in an ACTUAL life threatening situation, where a second or two can make the difference, then absolutely... Execute that maneuver as quickly as possible. But, if you're in regular training and range conditions, upon encountering a failure to fire situation, freeze, with barrel still trained on target, for at least a five count, to ensure that you do not have a hangfire situation. And here's why...
    Yup, a modern, well maintained firearm with modern ammo has a very unlikely (but not impossible) chance of a hangfire.
    However, just as you mentioned the officer, who's just down the road from me, in Lawrenceville, GA. had a "double failure to fire" with otherwise "fine ammunition" due to mishandling of his carry ammo, people are people and can cause good ammo to become compromised.
    Having the ammo in close proximity (a big no-no) while cleaning a weapon can allow cleaning solvents, etc. to come in contact with the ammo, defeating the seal, etc.. Wiping down "rusted cases" on live ammo with WD40, etc. after moisture exposure can absolutely compromise ammunition.
    Now, your otherwise high quality, defense ammo can be a dud or subject to a hangfire. Please reference the video by CRS firearms channel demonstrating a number of malfunctions (almost all) in a group of ammo he compromised, including hangfires.
    I'm making a specific point about this because, if you get in the habit of executing rapid "tap, rack, bang" drills during standard range time and have introduced defective ammo into your well maintained, high quality weapon and, upon experiencing a failure to fire, immediately pull the weapon off line of the target and the round suddenly decides to fire while the barrel is pointing at something/one that you do not intend to shoot... Things can go south quickly.
    If you manage to strip the round from the weapon and it detonates as the round is flying through the air, again, not so good.
    It's because this situation is so rare that makes it such a danger. Confidence in the fact that "it can never happen to me" is often one's "famous, last words.".
    So, I would ask people to give this it's due consideration and give the few seconds of caution when practicing their failure to fire drills. It could save a life. Or the windshield of your truck... ;)

      @carbonking53 8 років тому +1

      I can say from personal experience with the gen 4 Agency magwell I found it absolutely does interfere with mag stripping. Even on mags with Vickers enhanced mag base plates. I also found with standard length/capacity Glock 19 mags that are loaded to full capacity the Agency magwell requires an extra hard seating tap to ensure the mag catch engages the mag and retains it. Because of these two issues I removed mine. In the stress of a life threatening confrontation these were two issues I wanted off the "shit that can go wrong" list. Save the $100 on the magwell and put it towards attending a Sage dynamics or other quality training class.

    In reference to having a magwell on a gun, there are two ways to get the magazine out of the gun without having to strip it out which can be made difficult as you mentioned by having a magwell on a gun. There is the inertia method and one other method. I don't know if the second method has a name but I can describe and demo it. I learned both of these methods from the late Paul Gomez.

    Just curious if you had any advice for me on this, because I see you are a left handed shooter. So I grew up always shooting right handed, but maybe about 5 or so years ago I did one of those tests with your eyes to see which eye open that nothing moves. I am not sure if you have heard of this or not, but basically I found out I should actually be shooting left handed because my left eye is the one that (when open and the right eye closed) no background objects shift. Sorry if that's a bit confusing, if you don't get what I'm talking about I think I could clarify for you if you need. But i have always grown up shooting right handed and I'm a great marksman, with my left I am about 80% as efficient in accuracy and speed. Which would you say I should use? My left, which I should be using but am more unfamiliar with. Or my right, which I have used every time and I am proficient with.

    • @SageDynamics
      @SageDynamics  8 років тому +1

      I'm right eye dominant. Not something I really even notice anymore. It ultimately doesn't matter as long as you shoot with both eyes open.

      Ok thanks! Yeah, the only reason I noticed it, was when I went clay pigeon shooting, using my right eye. I would track with both eyes open, but close my left eye when I went to shoot, and that would throw off my aim. It was my first time going out clay pigeon shooting, but I eventually tried using my left hand, which worked ok. But i finally just decided to keep both eyes open.

    Besides a limp wrist what are the causes of the double feed. Lately, I've been having too many double feeds, every magazine at least 2. The pistol is a S&W 9mm 6906 that I've had for over 35 years. So far a solution is not there for what is causing them. The guide rod spring has been replaced and it is still about the same. Great video thanks ? Arron what is the odds of a unspent round once ejected firing when hitting hard surface i.e. shooting range floor

    • @rivblack
      @rivblack 4 роки тому +1

      The round wont fire. It can only fire by hitting the primer which is pretty much improbable to happen. Even if it did ignite, a round that isnt in a chamber isnt very dangerous at all since there is no barrel. Just pops.

    I had my very first catastrophic malfunction this past weekend at the range. Bad primer, heard a slight bang but zero recoil and alot of smoke.... In my head I'm thinking hang fire so I take the magazine out and point the gun down range and wait 20sec. After the waiting I try to clear the gun and the gun won't budge. It was like it was completely frozen in place. Luckily since it was a Walther pdp I could still disassemble the gun like you would a field strip because you don't have to pull back on the slide a bit like you would with glock, just pull down on both takedown levers and the gun shifts forward on its own. Once I took it down and separated the lower from the upper and got the guide rod out the barrel was practically fused in place with a round fully seated on the breach face and bullet still I'm the casing was just barely sitting inside the barrel chamber. I guess from the heat of the bad primer it like welded the casing to the breach face and still wouldn't budge. Litteraly had to take a rubber mallet to the portion of my barrel that's exposed from the top of the slide to finally get it to come loose. The round was still fully intact but the primer looked gnarly like ripped halfway open with burnt black all around it.... Thank God after I cleaned the gun and got it back together it ran another 100 rounds just fine. This was with good Norma 124g ammunition too. Ammo that I've fired thousands of times previously but I did notice with my last shipment the primers were no longer the pretty silver they used to be, they were the same color of the brass round...

    Shot with steel for the first time with my XL last week and got a double feed every 8-9 rounds. If I pulled the mag and let the slide go forward, it was nearly impossible to rack that slide afterwards. Took me using the optic on the bench to rack it back all the way or far enough to lock it in place. When I locked the slide back prior to pulling the mag, this was a non issue. Just throwing that out there. I'd never have steel in my ccw, but was shooting with it because $ and what not. Never again. Couldn't even do drills because it happened 2 or 3 times a mag (12 round factory Sig)

    I got a question.. if you hear a click couldn’t it be squib? Tap, rack (look at the round?) and on a ak too no last round bolt hold open but a hanmerfall without bang. What if you have a squib on the last round and you think you are empty the only odd thing would be when you load the mag and rack the first round you would extract a case right?

    • @SageDynamics
      @SageDynamics  Рік тому +1

      A squib is still a fired round, just underpowered. It makes more than a click.

      @@SageDynamics i havent had a squib myself or seen it live so my best guess where videos. what is to expect from a squib? puff of smoke? or a weird pop? and i can imagine its easier to detect a squib on a rifle then it is on a small caliber pistol? thanks for the answer

    • @6thmichcav262
      @6thmichcav262 10 місяців тому

      @@lucatriet575 Yes, a pop or loud click, depending on your ear protection. A puff is less likely if there is a bullet in the bore. If you hear a click and extract an EMPTY case, take the gun down and check for a bullet in the bore. Otherwise the next cartridge will either fail to chamber (hitting on the bullet in the barrel) or blow up your barrel due to a bore obstruction.

    Aaron, I kind of dread even asking this question because I'm probably going to get hammered on it by somebody but I'm going to ask anyway. When talking to your students about malfunctions do you ever bring up a hang fire? The only reason I ask is because when I watch you racking the slide from the front I wonder if you are ever concerned about the round going off late. Obviously in an emergency situation that would not even cross my mind but in practice is that ever a concern?

    • @SageDynamics
      @SageDynamics  8 років тому

      Nope, legitimate question. I do cover it but it's such a rare occurrence with modern ammunition that I personally accept the risk in exchange for the rewards.

    Sir mostly agree I would only add that it’s hard to visually Id ur malfunction at night. Hence preforming ur immediate actions the same way enables u to work ur malfunction out whether u can “see” it or not. Just my 2 cents, respectfully.

    At about 11:30 you said you have yet to find a gun that wouldn't allow you the technique of stripping the magazine on a double feed without locking the slide to the rear.
    Try it on a Beretta 92 with a mil issue flush bottom magazine. Gloved hand or not doesn't matter. Just want to know your thoughts.
    From my experience it is difficult to do even when you lock the slide back as well.

    • @SageDynamics
      @SageDynamics  8 років тому

      I discovered the technique on a beretta 92 when I carried it as a duty weapon, though I rarely see 92s in class.

    • @mangudai1987

      +SageDynamics Factory civilian magazines have enlarged floorplates. Mil issue are flat and flush.
      I was just curious as to how you might approach that issue. especially since a lot of us Joe's have to run M9's.
      I run a 19 for edc.

    • @SageDynamics
      @SageDynamics  8 років тому

      +kurt the flush plates have to be worked from the toe, or a small band of 550 cord can be looped through the drain hole to give you a pull point

    Steve "Yeti" Fisher teaches almost the same technique but is a little faster by not racking the slide after stripping the mag. Strip mag reinsert mag and rack and go back to work. Basically perform a reload only need to rack slide once after you strip and reinsert.

    That carbon buildup on that light bezel probably drops the output to 2 lumens...lol
    I found a light coat of shock oil stops carbon from sticking to the lens. I normally wipe the lens and reapply a very light coating whenever I clean a weapon.

    The 2 DOA rounds from cycling... thats why my duty gun and my off carry guns all stay loaded / chambered. I never unload unless im shooting or cleaning. Screw that unload every time BS. Get yourself a cheap pistol safe to keep it in and leave it hot. The other thing that can happen is constantly Loading the same round pushes the round back into the casing and when you pull the trigger now you have a really big problem... And overpressurized round. Store them hot 24/7.

    Doublefeed method - diagnose, strip mag, rack slide, insert mag, rack slide, fire. Could you try diagnose, strip mag, insert mag, rack slide, fire? Let us know if that could cut time and still be effective.

    • @ttam142
      @ttam142 7 років тому

      Yes, that method also works and I've seen it taught by other instructors. It's not quite as reliable as racking the slide before inserting the mag, but it's faster and works better for people who need to retain that magazine but don't have the hand strength/dexterity to hold onto it and rack at the same time. It's all trade-offs.
