As a casual player, I thought the Invasion and Kameo stuff were not fun. MK11 was more fun casually despite me not enjoying the slower speed. MKX was the last game I really enjoyed.
I didn’t like mk1 at all, i only played the story, didn’t liked and just uninstalled. The previous 3 mk were waaay better and prefer a tag team mode like in mk9. And of course the other mk were perfect for some casual fighting every now an then because of their adecuate storage size, instead of the whopping 150 gb of mk1.
Max is spot on about the "brand new era" stuff just being bs, I was really excited about the idea of a brand new timeline with reimagined characters but they did not commit to it at all other than I guess Rain
This. As for casual side of me that likes story mode in fighting game, this whole "new era" is really a big miss and wasted potential. The thought of Liu Kang literally created a whole new universe, dare I say has limitless potential of an idea they can executed, but instead no they literally just reboot the same storyline again. The 3D era characters return back just for the sake of them returning, that all. The main villain is Shang Tsung again. They could have gone for a new story, maybe like after Kronika was defeated, a brand new Titans emerge from the shadows to fight Liu Kang, and speaking of a Titan...ho boi how I hate they just treat the Titan merely as a "status" instead of actual race. Everyone is a Titan now. Is just dumb imo. They clearly branded that an Elder Gods is a child of a Titan, as a homage to Greek mythos. But now that idea is completely scrap. They could have take the opportunity to flesh out the Titans lore, who actually they are, what is their connection to the One Being. But nope, they decided to do some MCU multiverse war shit and slap everyone as a Titan because they thought it was cool.
Zest Mage rain is the worst reincarnation of a character I've ever seen. Making a classic fan favorite a moist magician was the tipping point for majority of MK fan
The hardest thing for me to even try current mk games is knowing they have such a small shelf life. Games like street fighter and Tekken last for years and improve from launch and retain a steady audience on and offline
Crazy how no one mentions the krypt. One of the most unique features in mortal kombat for decades that was genuinely exciting to explore and spend all your coins at to unlock new costumes characters, stages, concept art replaced by invasions lol. That decision making alone should concern you
Also how the hell have we slowly regressed to saying 1 year or year and a half support. Few years ago it was at LEAST 2 years of support with ACTUAL balance changes that significantly improved the game and now we’re acting like only a year of support with 1 or 2 meaningful(if you can call it that) balance patches over the coarse of the games entire existence is NORMAL NOW!!!
Remember in mkx when NRS completely rewrote the net code in the middle of the games life and made ranked playable back when a few seconds of delay was extremely common in all fighters. Imagine NRS or WB ponying up the cash and time to do that for any modern mk haha, what a joke
Remember in mkx when NRS completely rewrote the net code in the middle of the games life to make ranked playable during a time where many fighters had at least a few seconds of consistent delay. Imagine NRS now or WB ponying up the time and money to do something that substantial for a modern mk game haha, what a joke
Don’t forget they shifted all of the character outfits, weapons, concept arts, etc. to “the shrine”, essentially removing all user engagement that came with the crypt in exchange for some half baked shitty gacha system that hardly even worked right half the time
High price tag, unfinished product, little to no customisation compared to mk11, not enough offline content compared to mk11, WB greediness and charging the DLC almost as the main game, Kameos are a hit and miss.
Oh, I thought that was the rendition of a music from MK1, wanted to write "well, at least they finally have some nice tracks in their game". OK, thanks for the source.
I think they were trying to cater to this generation of ADHD gaming where people don’t have patience. Just get straight to the fighting. I like the 3 lines too.
This is one of the first things I noticed that made me nervous about the game going forward. Cheaping out on such a small but valuable thing was not a good sign
As someone who loved MK11 and detests MK1, this is probably the best video I can share with someone to explain why that is and what I felt went wrong. Ultimately, MK1 is a game that contradicts itself in every facet while not doing something at a fundamental level that inherently appeals to whatever type of “player” comes to the game. You're constantly feeling as if you're making compromises to cater to the game versus the game trying to cater to however you want to play it. You may not have liked the inherent gameplay of MK 11, but that game was more than happy to reward you with however you wanted to play the game and however much time you want to spend with it. Whether you wanted to spend 10 minutes in training, 20 minutes against the computer, and random matches were three hours online, That game knew how to make that appealing and rewarded you for your time. MK1, meanwhile, clearly wants you to only spend time playing it online, but is so horrid at doing exactly that.
That, and i didn't care for a lot of their new design choices for the characters. Massively less customization, and the story was worse in my opinion. Especially that final act.
People hardly shoot energy things in the main story and the "multiverse burnout" for you ain't the game's fault. I guess a lot of stories are "bad" then cause they involve people shooting energy of some kind.
I play MK for the story and characters, and the entire reboot concept that doesn’t turn out to actually be a reboot and leans into the completely overdone multiverse bullshit made this the first MK I haven’t gotten since MK9.
@@MrMetalforever5 It's only Marvel, EEAOO did the multiverse angle and won an oscar, it comes down to writing and not having COVID/Strikes throw off everything
@@chrange9714The multiverse burnout is definitely the games fault, it's one of the biggest criticisms of the story, everything was new and fresh until the multuverse stuff was added. People just wanted a simpler, more grounded story, that's what the timeline reboot was for, and only a few chapters later we're back to the timeline crap. The burnout is real because so many stories have multiverse bs amd NRS failed to be original and just copied what others did.
I have zero faith in MK2/13/whatever they're going to call it. Warner Bros will learn nothing from this and make the pushes they always make onto NRS and NRS is going to deliver something even weaker than what's been given here, _which is so incredibly weak already._ I would love to be wrong, but I keep being proven right and I fucking hate it.
I hope the next game NRS are working on behind the scenes is Injustice 3; Not because I'm eager for a new Injustice game, but because in my opinion they should consider another publisher for the Mortal Kombat brand going forward.
Facts. MKX was the last game i enjoy. I dislike MK11 so much i stopped playing after the first three months. I even wrote a review on Steam that MK11 will be the last MK game i bought. MK1 proved me right. And i am sad i will also be right again for the next installment.
Oh they'll learn something just like they did with MK11. That is: don't take risks, play it safe and pander to nostalgia. Guarantee you the first thing they'll do is show that Kano and Sonya are on the base roster just like we got Mileena in One's first trailer. The story will also be rebooted again and everything post MK11 will be thrown out.
I remember an interview had Ed Boon say the kameo system began conceptually as just tailored to each character instead of a separate roster. I think in hindsight, it would have been better.
It definitely would have, because whenever someone gets added to the cameo roster, instead of people getting hyped, they got disappointed. Because it meant that character likely wasn't going to be playable. So, Kameos weren't generating the positivity that they were hoping for.
5:30 I do totally agree that they should let you update the background screen and music. For example Tekken’s music gets me hyped up to fucking FIGHT. But MK1’s is kinda boring until that Chinese instrument part plays for like 5 seconds.
NRS fighting games have the most forgettable music in modern fighting games except when it's a remix of a Dan Forden track. Even MVCI had more memorable tracks.
They need to cut ties with WB even if it means no more rights to many guests they wanted. WB just destroy everything they touch with their greed. Street fighter and Tekken make a game and support it for years, give meaningful patch notes to make the game last. Ever since MK1 launched it's been cash grab after cash grab and it's simply unacceptable. 50$ for a DLC that's just a meaningless story expansion with no substance and a kombat pack( that doesn't even have Kameos in it which is scummy AF). The issue with this game are mainly not even gameplay related, it's cause they rushed and took away modes everyone loved. In the next MK game they need to bring back conquest mode, the Krypt, have fckin training mode while searching for matches and most importantly stop scamming people. The 10$ fatalities, announcer voices and skins, the overpriced DLC, Scandal after scandal after scandal no wonder your game dies. And another issue is that the balancing team has been terrifyingly incompetent. Nearly A year and a half after launch and Sindel is still top 3 as she's been since day 1. Homelander was unmatched for over 6 months. Sub Zero received nearly 0 buffs since launch. Ferra is still annoyingly broken. They need to fire the balancing team and send them packing. You can't have a successful fighting game where you've got an unfair meta, a stale meta that never changes, braindead strats being viable at the highest level( scorpion ferra, sindel lao and sindel tremor, homelander ferra, Reiko, scorpion jax). It's just a shame cause this game gameplay wise at least for me is way more fun than MKX. They've found a nice balance between broken and toned down mk11. I think the kameo system had so much potential but they just don't know or don't care enough to buff any kameo in the game. If that's how they deal assists I don't ever wanna see an assist fighter from them again
One thing I love about Max is that he can break down a lot of the talk and makes it feels understandable about why a game just isn't working all that well. He can articulate to someone like me why a game works, why it doesn't and what can be done. It feels like a conversation and hence why he is the only one I go to about "state of the game" stuff because he keeps it chill without being full of bluster about the situation
To me the biggest problem MK1 suffers from is one that started in MK11 and that is the atmosphere is not what you expect from an MK game. The gameplay is a clear step up from MK11 but not at the same level of fun as MK9/MKX and I think the combos take way too long. When your combos begin to exceed 3-5 seconds of IRL time on every interaction then something has to be done here.
Atmosphere is a an underrated point. There were cutscenes in MK11 that felt like it wanted to be Star Wars. MK1 on the other hand clearly wants to be Injustice as the moves get even more superhero-y. Everyone can straight up fly now.
Dude yes 🙌. I’ve been saying this for a while & the real ones get it. The atmosphere, tone, feel, environment, look of MK has completely gone. Instead it feels more marvel now. 9,X had it massively they felt like proper MK games the last two no esp this one. Story should be about realms, martial arts n mythical stuff not timelines n such. Great comment. I fear that X might have been the last proper MK game we’ll ever see.
@@Tek195 Exactly. How do you go from fighting in "Goro's Lair, The Pit, The Deadpool" to fighting in The Tea House and Johnny Cage's Mansion with goofy flamingo floats everywhere?
@@clarencegutsy7309 🤣🤣😂😂😂😂 so true some one posted the difference between Deception & MK1. How Deception had a dungeon, horror, mystical feel compared to 1’s strange feel. The character designs everything. They really have lost the understanding of their own franchise. I guess the amount of staff changes that’s changed esp since after X doesn’t help. People like that Dominic guy who shows distain for fans, he is now the sole story guy that says it all.
@ With no more content on the horizon it might aswell be. WB needs to learn that you kill off any community when you nope out of your GAS titles preemptively just because they aren’t bringing in the dough. Whoever makes these calls at WB has the IQ of a subterminal amoeba.
I think what they did here was better, cause with a tag fighter that would require every assist character to have their own move set. That’s just unreasonable
@@rockycuro7737 But on the other hand, that is exactly why the Kameo system feels underbaked (because it's the cheapest / least amount of effort they could do to bring more characters.) So in the pursuit of cutting corners they ended up with product that feels like it's corners were cut.
@ I mean, it’s because of that system that allows us to see these characters again without needing them to be playable. Isn’t that better than waiting to all those characters to be dlc? Like, how else would we be playing alongside mavado or motaro or Goro or ferra or whoever else? You’d either have to make them fit with the story to work with the fighters, or wait for them to be dlc and somehow work them into the events of the game. But with the kameo system you don’t have to do that. You can bring back obscure characters nobody remembers, you can have motaro return for the first time since mk3, you can have mokap or Stryker or khameleon back in action again.
@@rockycuro7737 I think the implication that neutralguy is making is that you would simply have the main roster as assists and tag partners, instead of having characters that are strictly for assists
@ man unless every kameo character was main roster and had their own movelist, it wouldn’t work with the characters already on the roster. Having them tag in and being forced to do the tag fighting the whole time would’ve just been so bad
I'll say this forever MK1 feels like a game that should've been made during that MK9 Era. I will never understand how we gone through similar variations of the tag system MK1 has but it still feels incomplete
Wtf does that even mean? You're saying nothing and have the most thumbs up on this video. Mk just needs better gameplay, flat out. Street Fighter doesn't have towers and crypts and all this other shit, it just has good gameplay and some basic extra modes. Mk needs to make the run button a serious staple to deal with every entry feeling slow. They need to ditch dial a combo and go back to something more satisfying like chains in mk3. With Dial a combo you input your string and wait while every move finishes animating. It's not snappy. With chains like mk3, each animation is canceled out by the next button press, making things happen immediately. Its fast and you feel more in control. It's SATISFYING. Mk9 had the same issue, people were just blinded by the Nostalgia of the roster and story and it going back to 2d. Every nrs game has the same problems and people are slowly getting tired of it. MKX was okay, because it was fast and had Run, that's why it's everybody's favorite of the nrs games. But it still had boring ass dial a combos. Make Run a series staple and fix dial a combo where it's not so damn slow feeling.
@SecretLifeOfMcNally Translation: MK1 still feels like a test/incomplete game and should've been released during an earlier age around MK9 as either an update or later game before MKX. MK11 and MKX feel like more complete games, while 1 could still be considered early access of all the features it's missing.
@ViewtifulOtaku7 Or just release good games with good gameplay from the start. "This game feels unfinished, so it would have made more sense if it came out when mk9 did" What? NRS has literally never supported a game more than 2 years ever. All this shit max says like it has a lot of potential to get better is BS because NRS doesn't support their games long enough to improve them. No NRS game ever got a new mechanic added to spice things up. Just more story and character stuff because they can charge for it, but can't charge for a mechanic update. If you're only gonna support your game for a year and a half, you better make sure you release it in a good state.
Because MK's sales are carried entirely by novelty and not quality. Casuals don't care if the game is MKX but better, they care if Elmo and Micheal Myers are playable. If you can't put it in a thumbnail, the suits do not care.
@@jays.6843MK has been riding on “Your dad’s fighting game he played in the arcades in the 80’s” why do you think they keep adding old 80’s action stars and famous characters? That’s all they have
Definitely agree with you with things feeling same-y with regards to characters and the story. The only things that truly felt new were Reptile and Baraka being good guys, which was awesome! But then it goes to the multiverse stuff and repeating story beats (kenshi goes blind, sub becomes noob, etc.)
As someone who despises MK11, i have to say it was overall a way better package. I love MK1's gameplay, i dont mind the kameo posing stuff, it helped me figure out some of the moves better before I got into the ambush attacks. But so much of the game just suffers from what is clearly Warner Bros' dirty fingers mucking around in every part of the game outside of its gameplay. It breaks my heart knowing WB is likely gonna pull the plug instead of trying to pull the players back in. The simple fact is that every patch has made this game better and yet we're forced into the same Mortal Kombat dev cycle. A year or so of support then dropped. Only this time it feels like it was dropped before they had the chance to make it even better. It also sucks that yet again, i dont get Kabal in a game that i REALLY enjoy playing. Never got him in X and I'll never get him in 1. I'm stuck with him in 9, which is fun enough but I never quite figured out. And i get him in 11, which i actively dislike playing
Game development issues aside, I really wish MK stuck to what made it unique. They used to push the envelope for what you could put in a video game but MK1 seems to be the “safest” entry the series has ever had. I wish they would go back to taking risks with their story and character design. The game looks amazing yet it feels so bland. I want bat shit insane characters that are badass doing fucked up things all while being present in a competitively balanced fighting game.
Started to trip out the moment I recognized the Golden Sun soundtrack. Never heard Max use Golden Sun music before. But it's a great underrated choice.
Personally, I dislike paying 70 dollars for the game and not having half the roster because it's all dlc. Kind of...done with fighting games. Love to play love to watch but hate to own it.
This has been a huge problem for years now unfortunately with fighting games. It’s why I stopped buying them at launch cause they just want to monetize everything as DLC instead of giving a great roster at launch.
I’ve mainly been playing mk1 offline practicing combos and fighting locals. So I’ve never really understood the criticism from a gameplay standpoint. I’ve loved the gameplay of it. But Hearing Max’s take on mk1 and the various online problems finally makes the criticism makes sense to me. I finally understand the gripes people have, but I’m having fun with it at the very least. (Mainly because I don’t have to deal with the issues lmao)
When I saw the trailer and saw how long it will take to be released which was like 3 months, I feared this would be the future of the game. NRS really should’ve spent more time on the development of this game…
I enjoyed Mortal Kombat 1 casually so it's disappointing to hear support for the game is ending. But speaking of games getting cut short, I miss Golden Sun so, so much.
As a pro player and a console player , we find matches fast asf but I understand what u mean I wish it was like Tekken in a way let us practice while waiting for a match
Something I've noted about Kameos; it feels like every character is restrained in order for the Kameos to work. Like, your character cannot do huge combos without Kameos jumping in, and usually the Kameo you need to extend comfortably is a DLC one.
Kameo system was a terrible idea. Any character you want to play feels incomplete because there needs to be a purpose to pair a Kameo with them. Then if the best Kameo to pair them with is one you don’t like, then suddenly you’re not as excited to play your favorite character anymore.
hate to break it to you, but its 99.9% probability that big boy NRS makes the decisions on their own...But feel free to keep white knighting them as if its that evul WB
@hehehehaw8346 respectfully, just because an art style looks closer to real life and is more detailed doesn't instantly mean it's better. There's also more to an art style than graphics alone. I'm referring to the tone more than anything else anyways. The franchise has always had a rather dark element to it. That's been evident in character and level design. MK1 however, shifted to more vibrant colors and more elaborate details that feels rather foreign and out of place for the franchise (yes, even with its more detailed and higher rez blood and gore 😅). Less can at times mean more. And that's not to say we need to cut back on pixels, per se. I just think we need to revisit the more familiar darker visual undertones.
@rmj7 mk9/x have no mechanics. Mkx has a Run button. Other than that they're typical bone basic fighters, but with nrs jank, floaty jumps, slow normals, dull ass dial a combo...
I wish they kept the three line interactions like from X and 11, because they’re enjoyable, and tell us some stuff on what happened to other characters. While I don’t mind the Kameos, but I kinda wish NRS would try Kombo Fatalities with the Main Kombatants, because that would be an interesting feature. But one thing I really like about MK1, is the brand new story it gives us, fresh new ideas, and not following the same stuff from the previous games. Though I do miss Shao Kahn being the Major Villain, since he’s such a big threat, even Gods fear him. But, oh well, when in Rome.
If you ever want to nerf a feature in a way that tangibly feels worse out of fear that it's unbalanced, you are probably making a mistake unless it's especially egregious.
They had the formula with MKX when they introduced variations. Then 11 comes around and most moves for characters were prohibited therefore tuning down the game which sucked. Now we’re stuck with MK1 and the god awful cameo system that could’ve been good yet failed hard. It’s like the saying goes, if it’s not broken don’t fix it. Hopefully the next game they give us is thoughtfully planned out or else it’s back to the drawing board for NRS.
MKX gameplay and atmosphere (aand stage interactions) + MK11 production values and content (and Krushing Blows) + MK1 assist as co-op tag + ten or more special attacks per character - "Variations" or "custom abilities" = as good as it could get with what we've seen NRS can do, and the _only_ formula that could save the franchise (if it hasn't already be relegated to a decade or more long stasis).
What If they made a brand new game, based on the old photo sprite method, just with 4k resolution and modern technology? I feel like it would have the potential to be something new and special.
Outside of the sheer lack of features, one of the main things that got me to stop playing for good was Kombat League. No placement matches means whoever you face at the start of a season is a complete dice roll, it takes approximately the half life of uranium 235 to climb ranks after Grandmaster, and getting matched with lower ranked players is a lose-lose situation for the higher rank player. When I returned to play the game after Takeda released, I hit Demi-God by sheer luck because the matchmaking KL is an absolute joke. I got matched with so many higher ranked players that I made it to Grandmaster in two short sessions. Meanwhile, every single one of those higher ranked players that I beat, lost several hours of progress because NRS refuses to implement placement matches for some reason. And that's not even mentioning the absolute slogfest that is the lower rank meta. Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Smoke, Omni-Man, and Homelander were literally the ONLY characters I went up against in those ranks and they all had the same game plan since launch because the meta barely shifted in a whole year. So not only does it take forever to rank up in KL, the matches themselves are the most uninspired, boring, linear fighting game experiences I've ever had the displeasure of experiencing.
Im actually a big fan of Kameos. However Max nailed it, they can kind of be unintuitive and jank. Not to mention the ones that make you stop and pose. They really seemed to restrict a play feature that was supposed to be a huge part of the game.
The real thing that really bothers me about MK1 is the DLC. Specifically Khaos Reigns. MKX and MK11 both had themes for their DLC guest characters. MKX had horror characters (Jason, Leatherface, Xenomorph, ETC.) and MK11 had 80s action characters (Terminator, Rambo, Robocop, ETC.) Kombat Pack drops, and it has Omni-Man, Peacemaker, and Homelander, so one would assume the theme is “evil superheroes”. Then they do a 180 and puts in Ghostface, T-800, and Conan. It was such a simple thing to get right: Stick with the theme. They could’ve gotten Punisher, Nemesis, or Owlman, but nope.
max speaking volumes about the matchmaking, if i have to spend 5 minutes between matches doing nothing but navigating menus to flip a coin on wheather its a ahitty connection or not really killed my enthusiasm for the game
Games monetization and rollout were utterly terrible so it turned people off. If I had nickel for every time I heard that story on the game industry now.
@@AlexanderMartinez-kd7cz It is. I don't know of any other assist fighter that has that wack summon call that makes your character do a dumb pose and slows down the game. People love DBFZ and MvC and they have assists blasting off all the time. Then again, MK appeals to casuals more than any other fighting game, so they'd probably hate it if every assist was an ambush. "It's too fast! It's too broken!"
"You're looking at the waiting for ranked matched screen" This is exactly what killed soul calibur 6 for me. I wanted to play that game, but I did not want to wait for 3 minutes to get into a match on launch day
It's inexcusable that there is no room creating still in the game but they will sell you characters. They've been at this almost longer than anyone. Absurd.
So much story potential NRS just clocked out on. There’s so much they could’ve gone into. Old Raiden had anger issues, would’ve LOVED seeing him shoot red lightning while he acts turnt up every now and then, maybe even see some story dynamics with him and Liu Kang teaching him how to control his anger. Kung Lao is a lot more lax this time around. They could’ve turned him into a gentle giant older brother. Upon hearing Bi Han was Subzero also made me want to see a good karma Sub. They could’ve made Scorpion truly open hearted as a Kuai Liang Subzero. But nope. They only thought about the fun element and never took themselves seriously. Am super sad at the decline of mk1 but specially the story cause I’ve been in love with the lore since Mythologies
It’s sad despite how huge MK is culturally it’s one of the least supported fighting game franchises long term. All NRS games in general tbh. I get that it’s mainly a WB issue but these games genuinely feel like the cod of fighting games. Very little changes between games while also feeling underbaked having to wait over a year to finally get to a point where the game is somewhat fun.
I kinda of disagree on the little changes. The mark of MK is that it changes every game. Sub-Zero is different in MK9, MKX, MK11 and in M1K and it goes for every character. I think the main problem with WB is not in gameplay, it's all about customer practices and spacing out content terribly without anything in between, not giving enough attention to details of online play like match-making and the story being ass, specially this time around with KR.
@@CalciForm-lk2foyeah the more that I think about it the changes in gameplay are pretty major but I still think after mk9 it’s felt like we’ve gotten less and less every installment. The cod argument still resonates with me because regardless if the game eventually gets good in a year or 2, they are already ready to start marketing the next installment. Everyone will jump ship and the life span is cut in half where something like a street fighter or tekken lasts YEARS. Hell even Guilty gear, a game that has an incredibly niche audience is still thriving with updates to this day with no sign of a new installment soon. A new game every 2 years gives them no time to truly make a content rich game and no time to potentially fix any issues before completely moving on to the next. End of the day WB needs to get their heads out of their ass and support these games for longer than a year and some change.
I found Mortal Kombat 1 really disappointing. I don't like fighting randoms online, and my friends rarely play fighting games, so fighting games kinda live and die based on their single player offerings for me. I enjoyed the story of MK1, but Invasions is dreadfully boring and they gutted my favorite aspect of MK11, which was the customization. I sank way more time into MK11 than any other fighting game purely so I could unlock the different skins and gear I wanted for my favorite characters. I pre-ordered the ultimate edition of MK1 for $110 and I only played it for about a week.
Max, you spent half the video literally calling the game a pile of shit. "Icing on a cake of shit," and how the kameo system is bad, the gameplay doesn't feel right, none of the characters work for you, how playing the game feels like a chore, and how every part of the game feels like a step backwards...then, you say it's a really good game. I know you try to stay positive, and try to find the good in everything, but just be honest. Because, it sounds like you care more about not burning any bridges rather than just being honest with your audience. If almost every aspect of the game is bad...just say it's a bad game and be done with it.
The thing is, at the end of the day he does enjoy actually fighting people in the game. So he still thinks the game is good because it's fun when actually in the moment. It's just worse and has some glaring problems (some getting in the way of actually just fighting people). Worse games can still be good games though. Like if you'd say MKX is a 9/10 and this is a 7/10 it's still a good game. Max is a bit on the overly positive side in general, but I think he genuinely means that for now. He was saying MK11 is a better game, but he still enjoys MK1 more, so it's a mix of objective and personal takes.
I know that People like Max love the Kameo system but I can't help but feel like casuals hate it. I also primarily view it as a way to work in characters that they know they'd never be able to finish but still keep them in the game so fans wouldn't be too disappointed, sort of like Assist Trophies from Smash.
Even then it still feels a bit of a slap in the face, like I know there will be people scoffing and saying "Who tha fuq wants to play as so and so" but knowing that there's at least a small amount of fans of certain characters I'd rather have be fully playable and not just some assist that pops up for a second.
MK1 letting player 2 have access to everything you unlock was fantastic, something 11 was missing big time. 1 also had more memorable stages But one big mistake they kept saying in Kombat Kasts was “so go ahead into this new season of invasions and grind”. At no point in games like this should you have to grind for content, but it also shouldn’t all be available from the start. It’s absurd
When comparing mk1 to 11 there just feels like a substantial lack of substance and characther. Each entry has defining point and while yes the cameo system is cool. Does anyone talk about it? Mk11 had so many great changes that felt like a good step forward. This was a weird step to the side. But it makes me hopeful that they did this to further fund their next project!
MK11 was boring as hell too. 3 seconds for a throw animation that happens 10 times per match. 5 second animation for krushing blows that happen 8 times per match. 10 second animation for fatal blows that happen twice a match. And 20 seconds if a fatality happens. You're watch mini cut scenes more than fighting in that game. It doesn't feel good when the game keeps taking control away for little animations that are constantly happening.
People say Mk1 is bad but the only 2 negatives I see people talk about is Invasions and Kameos. Not gonna talk about the monetization as I’m talking from a gameplay perspective. I feel like MK11 was more worse because of multiple reasons. #1 It feels too slow. #2 The custom variant system. #3 Krushing Blows. #4 The meter system. All of these made the game unappealing to me. The crypt was great but also had some ugly requirements like the 50 fatalities on specific characters or something like that for some rewards.
My impression is that Mk11 was boring, and Mk1 was boring, but it feels like there was less shiny stuff that was boring in Mk1 than in Mk11, so it's like a lesser version of boring.
I'd hope for a MK9 style game as the next entry. Big roster of characters that have all their tools right out of the box - no kameos, no variations, no tag-team-partner or any other BS needed, just well rounded characters.
As a casual player, I thought the Invasion and Kameo stuff were not fun.
MK11 was more fun casually despite me not enjoying the slower speed.
MKX was the last game I really enjoyed.
This right here.

Casual here. I had way more fun on MK11 as well.
Why are Kameos not good for you as a casual just curious
Max is spot on about the "brand new era" stuff just being bs, I was really excited about the idea of a brand new timeline with reimagined characters but they did not commit to it at all other than I guess Rain
Rain could have been a Donatello type of fighter but making him a sorcerer was lame

Same. Knew I wouldn’t be playing the game long term once they committed to the mechanic
I was kind of bummed with the story, it relied on too many scenes of people shooting energy at stuff. Multiverse burnout didn't help, either.

Warner Bros will learn nothing from this and make the pushes they always make onto NRS and NRS is going to deliver something even weaker than what's been given here, _which is so incredibly weak already._

It would've been considering there are Kameos that are just completely useless with certain characters.
It definitely would have, because whenever someone gets added to the cameo roster, instead of people getting hyped, they got disappointed. Because it meant that character likely wasn't going to be playable.

I think what they did here was better, cause with a tag fighter that would require every assist character to have their own move set. That’s just unreasonable
@@rockycuro7737 But on the other hand, that is exactly why the Kameo system feels underbaked (because it's the cheapest / least amount of effort they could do to bring more characters.)
So in the pursuit of cutting corners they ended up with product that feels like it's corners were cut.

All this shit max says like it has a lot of potential to get better is BS because NRS doesn't support their games long enough to improve them.

Mk11 art style with MK9/X mechanics = winning formula for both diehards and casuals
Mk1 art style feels better and closer to irl. Just look at the background stages the details are insane

They need to remaster Mortal Kombat Trilogy in 4K that’s all we need
ABSOLUTELY!!!!
MKX had horror characters (Jason, Leatherface, Xenomorph, ETC.) and MK11 had 80s action characters (Terminator, Rambo, Robocop, ETC.)
Kombat Pack drops, and it has Omni-Man, Peacemaker, and Homelander, so one would assume the theme is “evil superheroes”. Then they do a 180 and puts in Ghostface, T-800, and Conan. It was such a simple thing to get right: Stick with the theme. They could’ve gotten Punisher, Nemesis, or Owlman, but nope.
Didnt expect golden sun music, but is very welcome
max speaking volumes about the matchmaking, if i have to spend 5 minutes between matches doing nothing but navigating menus to flip a coin on wheather its a ahitty connection or not really killed my enthusiasm for the game
God, do I miss Golden Sun..
We need them remastered. I loved both 1 and Lost Age
Elephant in the room= art direction. MK11 takes a dump on MK1.
That's weird cuz I play plenty of ranked matches online in MK1. That problem happens to me when playing Jojos all star battle R
Games monetization and rollout were utterly terrible so it turned people off. If I had nickel for every time I heard that story on the game industry now.
At this point a Tobias and Ed boon classic made MK wont bring me back. I'm so unbelievably checked out with WB. God I hated Kameos and Invasions.
Agree. MK is dead, to me.
😂😂😂 I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT HATES THAT KAMEO CRAP!
And what do you hate exactly with kameos?
I don't think MK 11 is the best game, but it's significantly better than this.
Whomever idea to put the Golden Sun bgm, I love you
I personally love the game having summon/ambush moves for assists. If everything is an ambush, it would be a joke to play.
isn't that what sells assist fighters anyway? people love MVC and that whole series is a constant stroke on screen.
@@AlexanderMartinez-kd7cz
It is.
This is the only fighting franchise doing multiple games per console generation at this point
MK1 will forever be memed for mentioning random family members that no one knows in their pre-fight dialogue lmao
I really like MkX cos it fast pace
Aw yeah, the Elemental Stars theme from Golden Sun!
Max's rants are the best. 10/10
@@pulsevzero Bro you know what. You actually make some good points as well with this
Perfect analysis, MK1 is ten digits behind MK 11. Simple as that.
MK needs a real reboot. Artistically, either make it super retro or dark and realistic. Enough of the corporate MCU bs.
Feels like MvC Infinite all over again
And MK11 he was afraid to rock the boat with that too ...and SF5 when it first came out
Toxic positivity
The thing is, at the end of the day he does enjoy actually fighting people in the game. So he still thinks the game is good because it's fun when actually in the moment. It's just worse and has some glaring problems (some getting in the way of actually just fighting people). Worse games can still be good games though. Like if you'd say MKX is a 9/10 and this is a 7/10 it's still a good game. Max is a bit on the overly positive side in general, but I think he genuinely means that for now. He was saying MK11 is a better game, but he still enjoys MK1 more, so it's a mix of objective and personal takes.
Glad to see im bot the only person here caught odf gaurd by the golden sun music
I know that People like Max love the Kameo system but I can't help but feel like casuals hate it. I also primarily view it as a way to work in characters that they know they'd never be able to finish but still keep them in the game so fans wouldn't be too disappointed, sort of like Assist Trophies from Smash.
Max literally starts the video stating why he doesn't like the Kameo system
Clearly you didnt watch the video...
Even then it still feels a bit of a slap in the face, like I know there will be people scoffing and saying "Who tha fuq wants to play as so and so" but knowing that there's at least a small amount of fans of certain characters I'd rather have be fully playable and not just some assist that pops up for a second.
Yeah put me off buying the game tbh breaks immersion loved mk11
@headshot217 I enjoyed mk11 and it's combat options and variations. Mk1 you are watching the same skill sets over and over.
I never returned an MK game before but this. I bought the premium edition at 120 dollars and sold it for half the price after a week
With Street Fighter V Capcom didn't really have a choice other than sticking to it and hoping someday it paid off
Also was it because they had to release SFV in a unfinished state was due to the possibility of almost getting bought out by Tencent?
@moonwarrior3342 Pretty much
The development of the RE Engine almost bankrupt the company
@@Sorrelhas That on top of a bunch of whiney cunts wanting to exacerbate any form of controversy Capcom had to try and look the victims.
I hope max can someday go back and play sum mkX. I still go back to the robot vs video where he went against that cyrax. That fight was bonkers
$50 for DLC is a GD rip-off TBH...
Hate the price as well, but by definition it’s not a rip-off…
MK1 letting player 2 have access to everything you unlock was fantastic, something 11 was missing big time. 1 also had more memorable stages
But one big mistake they kept saying in Kombat Kasts was “so go ahead into this new season of invasions and grind”. At no point in games like this should you have to grind for content, but it also shouldn’t all be available from the start. It’s absurd
MK1 is damn fun, but the feel of assists and the semi-predatory monetization hinders me from really loving it
God I love golden sun music.
Oh yes, MK11 is a good step forward with its break away system and the combo dropping festival.
My impression is that Mk11 was boring, and Mk1 was boring, but it feels like there was less shiny stuff that was boring in Mk1 than in Mk11, so it's like a lesser version of boring.
Finding an opponent while practicing a really hard combo that you almost got is like the best thing to hate!
All mk11 graphics and features + mkx gameplay will be wild. But that's impossible 'cause WB is a piece of crap.
I'd hope for a MK9 style game as the next entry.
Big roster of characters that have all their tools right out of the box - no kameos, no variations, no tag-team-partner or any other BS needed, just well rounded characters.
Mk1 just wasn't as fun as 11 in any way to me personally
