All the advice here is great. Thanks for the tutorial, Scott! One thing I would add is that recording in lossless will make your file size very large. 80-100 megabytes for well under a minute of video. If you plan on recording 30+ minute videos to your channel, as I do mine, then I'd suggest learning more about the CQP rate control setting, and setting the CQ option between 15-20. Especially so if you have a slower internet speed. This video assumes that you have the storage space and the internet speed to store and upload massive file sizes. That rate control setting can slim down some of those files without any discernible loss in quality at 1080p, depending on your unique use case. The only way to find out is to play with the settings and see what looks best to your eye. Good luck!
Are there any videos out there that prioritize things like this with the settings over quality loss? I live in an area with slower internet so if I'm going to upload a video to youtube it takes forever... even if I lose out on quality I'd like to be able to upload something watchable without waiting a year for it to happen lol.

Great video! W.r.t.the GPU and Max B-Frame settings, under Output->Advanced->Encoder (Nvidia)->GPU if you have multiple GPUs (common with gamers), you can choose the less used and more powerful. For example, I have a wimpy Nvidia GTX710 to drive my screen (GPU=2) and two GTX1080s (GPUs=0,1) for machine learning applications (TensorFlow). I want my GPU to be either 1 or 0. You can run nvidia-smi on command line to find the numbers of the physical device, and to find their specs and usage. B-Frames are Nvidia specific too, and are set between none and 4, and I believe are designed to smooth out the video under certain conditions. Streamers encounter latency problems if B-Frames are used, because these consume a lot of the GPU's bandwidth. I'd just take the OBS defaults, as I believe that these are mainly provided for streaming/recording software like OBS.
Excellent Christopher, I'm not sure I understand what B-Frames are. Do you think you could make a video about this concept. You have my interest on this topic.
What is Max B frames? Max Consecutive: This setting controls the maximum number of consecutive B-Frames. B-Frames refer to both, the previous and the following I-Frame (or P-Frame). This way B-Frames can compress even more efficient than P-Frames. B-Frames can significantly improve the visual quality of the video at the same file size.Dec 30, 2011

i have plugged in speakers and the video i am reacting to. Obs is recording the sound through the mic and it sounds crappy. My voice is flawless but the audio from the video doesn't sound great. My speakers are below my computer desk. Do speakers need to be next to the microphone to record video sound?
No, what you talking about is "Desktop Audio" this is your system audio. Take a look under your "Audio Mixer" You should see it listed at the top. Play a sound file and make sure you can see active levels moving. If you don't see it click on one of the white gears and click "Unhide All" Make sure The speaker next to Desktop Audio is not red. If it is click it and unmute
This is one way to get a video. Although I'm not sure why you wouldn't use a free app that shows you a list of all available formats and just download the file you want. With OBS do you have to let the video play through completely? That seems a bit time consuming. I prefer downloading the file I want instead of video capturing what's on the screen.
