    See, so many people recommend cash only as a way to save money because "it will feel harder to spend it when you see it physically leaving your hands." But I (and other people I have heard from) have the exact opposite problem. Cash is easier for me to spend, because that money is already out of my bank account. As far as my checking and savings is concerned, that money is already gone, whether it stays as cash or gets exchanged for goods/services. But if I use a card, then I'm spending money that HASN'T left my account yet, which feels a lot more impactful. In the end, you kind of have to just know yourself and what types of spending matter to you.

      I used to be like this, and I also wouldn’t count the cash I do have in my wallet so I wouldn’t understand how much I’m spending. The cash envelope system has changed that for me though, because I know exactly how much money started out in each envelope and watching the envelope get thinner makes me reconsider if whatever I’m about to buy is worth it because I have a limit on how much I can spend per paycheck on that category.

      Agreed. Also, it's so easy to forget what you spent where when it was paid in cash. Whenever I pay on my debit card, I get a notification on my phone and I see that purchase every time I check my account. When it's on my credit card, I see a cumulative total of my spending for the past month, and feel like I have lost the money again when the balance is removed from my debit account.

      I guess because it never seems like the advice in the videos pertains to someone with an income as low as mine. It's a joke to me to hear that $800+ on food alone a month is "reasonable" when that's more than half my income for my family. I don't need tips on how to use gift cards to my advantage, I need tips on how to grocery shop so I can afford to eat 3 meals a day and my rent. It's just irritating when you feel like you're doing everything you can and the tips are "cut out this and that" like you actually have any luxeries in your life like iPhones, cable, new cars, restaurant meals, etc.

      True, I normally cook my own breakfast. Today I went out and ran errands by myself and stopped at dunkin. I got a coffee, bacon wrap, hash brown, and a donut. Spent about 7 dollars. Felt like it was crazy, but I have completely stopped going to dunkin in the last 6 months. I used to stop at least 3 times a week. I bought a knock off keurig for my desk and just make Breakfast at home. I probably spent about 250 dollars at dunkin in 2019. Those little dollar donuts added up. On my ass too

I saved $5 bills for about 2 months and I had $220 and was able to do all my Thanksgiving food shopping for 6 people, fill up my car with gas and had enough to splurge on some new makeup that I needed. Normally I would have had to use savings or even a credit card. This was a painless and even fun way to save. It made a normally stressful week so much easier.

    • @Sylvi3D
      @Sylvi3D 4 роки тому +9

      I feel like the ''not knowing what a butter knife is" doesn't really reflect one's ability to cook or not to cook, but rather the way we've become more casual about dining in general so we don't necessarily include a specific butter knife in a place setting anymore.

    • @shockingheaven

      I was thinking the same thing. I get take out once a week at most. However, that one take out will sometimes be the same price as the 5 nights of dinner I cooked myself, which would come out to roughly 50% of my food costs for the month. We also have a rule not to get anything delivered that I couldn't make cheaper. Like, when I get a curry I make my own rice. I could buy two bags of rice for the cost of one portion of take out!

    • @melissamoore6539
      @melissamoore6539 3 роки тому

    I think the reason people spend a lot on dining out is because of how on the go our culture is now. My dad travels a lot for work so he has to buy food like that. Plus a lot of people my age that I know are constantly on the go. So if a 23 year old has class from 8-2 , work from 2-8 and then has to study for their 5 college classes chances are they won’t be cooking a whole lot in between. I personally love cooking and do it more so on the weekend when I have a bit more time.Not trying to be negative, just something that should be taken into consideration.

      It’s possible if you make it a priority. When I was in college and worked, I took advantage of batch cooking and super easy meals. I used the microwaves in the food court and even asked for hot water from coffee shops for soups. It takes a little for thought but it’s often possible. Good luck! :)

      I'm not even as busy as most people and cooking exhausts me. I don't mind doing it sometimes, but... damn. It's all the planning, shopping, preparation, waiting... it's not like I know what I'm doing either, so I'm trying to teach myself along the way. There's so little time in this day and age (by intention!).
      Yeah sure, making things in advance and freezing them is a way to go, but that still takes up time and such. Having a slow cooker/pressure cooker also helps. Definitely helps if you don't have to try to work with a kitchen the size of a small cube and an EZ-Bake oven in your apartment.

      @@weregretohio7728 Good points you made. One thing that helps me is buying frozen veggie packets that heat up in the microwave. If I am making a stir fry I just make the rice and throw in the veggies that are already cut up. Add some soy sauce and sesame oil and you are good to go. I also make a lot of my own sauces so I like to make pasta and put the sauce on it with some of the veggies. Healthy and fairly quick. Obviously this is different for everyone but it does help.

But, in LA food is expensive if you are not eating fast food or things made from a box. I tried coupons only to realize that “real food” doesn’t really come with discounts. I could get lots and lots of food cheap, but it was crap food. No, I don’t eat organic food or shop at whole pay check. the food part is killing me. i know how to cook, my parents were chefs and i worked as a chef as well so cooking is really easy and fun for me. problem is the city i live in, the grocery cost the same and some times more than going out.
    my grocery trip last night for example; i bought a large pack of chicken thighs on discount for $20, bundle of spinach $3, a couple of Russet potatoes $2, a brick of butter $5 and after taxes that came to about $35. I can parse it out to roughly 2 dinners and a lunch at work, which makes it about $11 a meal. This doesnt even count in the cost of oil and spices i use, though its not like i buy one for every meal but if i were to divide a jar of oil to 15 meals, thats an other dollar or so and plus an other dollar for spices used.
    If i were to go to the burrito place down the street, a single large burrito that would fill me cost about $9.
    i choose not to do that because its unhealthy. but man cooking at home is getting more and more expensive...

      it depends where you shop. some stores are cheaper for produce (where i live, sprouts) and others give you better deals on meat (tom thumb). gotta be smart with how you shop. also, $20 of chicken for only three meals worth is a major ripoff. it should be like $2-4 per lb depending where you live. for $20 i could get at least 5lbs of chicken at tom thumb!

And we work in restaurants and usually eat 5-8 meals per week for free. We maybe go out to eat every other week, spend around 60 per person. Food is hella expensive out here. One of the most expensive things, outside of rent/real estate. Without even being bougie.

    I disagree with you on only using cash. When you use a card there's a record of what you spent money on so you are held accountable and factor in what you need to do to improve or save money. You can also get scolded if you you are married or if you live with your parents. But if you use cash there is no record of it and you are not held accountable for anything you are spending money on. Deciding to only use cash can make bad spending habits continue. Such as if you are adicted to star bucks and you decided to just pay with cash so there's no record of it on your budget.

    Can't do the car thing since I live out in the sticks - but here's an idea for the furniture thing. As a hobby, learn to make some. You may have to struggle with the space and the initial tool purchases may be hefty-ish, but lumber is cheap in the US, and there are tons of how-tos here on UA-cam. The most expensive items you may need to buy are a skillsaw and a drill, and you can get either of those for around ~$35 if you look for used or get an off brand. That, screws/nails, glue, a ruler, some clamps.. okay it may take over a closet, and can get expensive when you look at the final amount, but if it's both taking the place of another activity/hobby you would be spending money on, and providing you with furniture you now don't have to pay for, it evens out.

Snd that was one meal, So in NYC it's very possible to spend way more than $860 for 2 people

    The only thing I have to say is that when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, public transportation was actually more expensive than driving. I mostly rode my bike.

    I like how the Retailmenot ad is mixed in like a tip. P.S. Retailer are NOT REQUIRED TO HONOR THEIR COUPONS. sometimes the're old or even non-existing coupon codes!

    I think Im the credit card only diet.... I even pay for coffee with credit card, mostly because I don't like carrying all the change. I have a rewards card and an air miles one so that's another reason I use cards instead. I've gotten a lot of money back and vouchers using loyalty cards. Nectar card in the UK can be used in many high street stores and national rail as well as supermarkets and online stores, I've found I got the most cash back on it. I always buy books and video games 2nd hand too

    I do a cash only diet
    I take out the equivalent of 30$/week at the beginning of the month and that is what I get to spend on groceries and household necessities. I don't bring any cards with me and usually leave the cash at home too, that way I only do well planned shopping once a week and seriously reduce impulse buys.
    It works pretty well for me and so far I've managed to put aside roughly 165$/month this year.
    That might not seem like a lot to some people, but it is saving up,so I have something to live off when going back to doing my masters degree (currently finishing up my BA)

    Okay 1 of the 3...I know how to make salad dressing and know what the butter knife is but yes. 90% of my food is dining out.

    In some countries, card acceptance is very low. When I used to live in such a place, going cash-only worked out terribly for me. The max I used to go out with was about 10£ in my pocket; when I found something that I wanted to buy, I used to ask myself: is this worth going outside in the cold again and walk for 10 minutes and back just to find a cash machine ? A lot of the times the answer was no.
