Hi Mike - Ron was my great uncle, my grandfather, Bill Anthony is his brother and currently 93 years old! I can't wait to share this video with him. I think he will love that you love the guitar so much and that it's clearly in good hands! My Uncle had a very sweet way about him, but we just knew him as "Uncle Ron", I'm now 41 yrs old and really starting to realize how many peoples lives he has touched by his music and teaching. Thank you for sharing these videos, I cant wait to show my grandfather! Kristen Anthony-Lucci
Very happy to hear this! I hope it brings a little joy to someone out there. My goal is to make sure Ron feels like I am doing right by him and sharing the love. :)
Damn... 20 years ago ...16 year old me sat down with Ron in lessons (in Burbank) with that guitar...I wouldn't be where I am without those lessons and the sound of that guitar. Still got my voice memo recordings of it. That guitar is a one of a kind. Brought back a lot of memories. Miss him. Thanks for posting this.
I was at Caltech and studied with Ron at his home. My favorite memory was I came for a lesson. Ron Affif was there and both Rons jammed. It was in the morning and they were still in their pajamas. Love Ron!
I had the great pleasure of meeting Ron in 2007 or so and hearing him play that very instrument when he was playing at a small club in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. He was such a nice guy. I told him that I liked one of the tunes that they played and, without asking, he wrote out all of the changes for me. He told me about wanting a D'Angelico, but not being able to afford it, so John D'Angelico worked out a payment plan for him. He put something like $125 down, John put him into the queue, and then Ron sent him payments regularly after that. He also told me the story about losing the guitar and then finding it again in a pawn shop. The way I remember it, he left in the parking lot while loading gear into a car and then drove away, but I could be wrong about that.
It makes me happy to see you play this. Ron Anthony was my uncle. I'm sure you know the story about when he lost this guitar and found it at a local thrift shop. He bought it back for very little money because they guy didn't know what he had. He had that picture behind you up in his office.
Your uncle was a very kind man, and I just learned of his passing today. He's changed my life for the better and one of the few teachers I considered a friend.
Hi Joe - My Name is Kristen Anthony, Ron was my Great Uncle! Ron is my grandfather's (Bill Anthony's) brother. Just wanted to say his and see how you are related?
yeah Mike, Santa has been good to you !! love the electric voice, acoustic voice was harder to hear, but maybe a DA unplugged clash in another video can be cool
Thank you for this video, Mike. Ron had a fantastic spirit. A humble giant of a player, he made substantial contributions to the Billy Bean biography. I am glad to know the guitar is in such good hands. He brought that guitar to our first gig, an outdoor patio gig on a hot summer day in Claremont. I asked why he brought it when he knew the setting of the gig. He said, "I like this one most. It'll be fine." Later, he told me how he nearly lost the guitar shortly after receiving it from John D'Angelico. Did you hear the story about Ron leaving that guitar in a New York City cab and how he recovered it?
@@Mikesarchangels I might have an audio recording of him telling the story. I'll listen back through the archives. Basically, he left the guitar in the taxi. He later found it in a pawn shop. Able to prove the guitar was his, he was able to get it back.
Beautiful! I recently acquired a 1959 Excel - serial #2076 - I checked and that Guitar you have was #2081 and finished 2 months later. Pretty neat! DAquisto was likely more involved at this point too

I see the Gibson cabinet with the box on top, so what kind of amplification rig are you using Mike? I hope one day you bring those guitars back to New York. I'd love to hear them in person.

That guitar sounds just gorgeous. I grew up in NYC and saw many D’Angelico guitars and have always wanted one.

Did they make these sort of guitars with solids woods in those days ?

I was using a toneblock but now just using that national amp. My Gibson EH-185 tubes are fried or something so gotta get her fixed.

Where do you get these amazing guitars?
Well I am lucky in that guys who look to sell them know I am an easy target so they ask me if I want to buy them. :)
Mike, is this guitar for sale? Ron was my uncle.
I am sorry but it is not for sale.
What is the make of the pickup?
That’s is a DeArmond Rhythm Chief 1,000.
Plugged into a Quilter?
Yes toneblock 202
Beautiful guitar, acoustics were amazing but are those light strings, sounds like it to me?!
Thank you. They are flat wound 12s. Not the ideal for acoustic play obviously but still sound pretty good.
