Stevie always had a problem when recording live where she would sing things differently than how it was recorded. If you listen to their live album, The Dance, you'll get a better version of her singing live but even there it's not like the original album. In fact, Silver Springs almost didn't make the album because of that. It was the last day they were doing recordings at the concerts that it came out right and that one was used for the album.

The mix is different because you are comparing a live version to a studio track. There is always a difference. Only lipsynched videos will be the same.
Imagine being in a band, writing a song about your breakup with another band member, then having it be a huge hit and then having to play it over and over... with that band member you broke up with. Then having the other band member who you broke up with write their own song about that breakup, and having it also become a big hit, and having to play that song over and over also. I introduce you to Fleetwook Mac.

@@josuecamargo9567 So did ABBA. Björn wrote "The Winner Takes It All" inspired by the separation he and Agnetha went through. And she sings lead on that song. Tho the specifics of the songs lyrics are not exactly what happened but the theme of separation is directly from that.
Then we have Axl Rose recording sound of having sex with the girlfriend of the drummer and using it in one of their songs. Ostensibly as revenge for being unfaithful but there's different versions of the details of course...
That's not even taking into account the marriage breakdown of John and Christine McVie, which was happening around the same time.

It's Mick Fleetwood on the drums. John Mc Vie was the bass player. Also, Mick had to play this on many occasions, live. Thus showing what a great, underestimated, drummer he was.

For the best demonstration of the power Stevie had in her voice during these years, there is the incredible performance of "Rhiannon" on the Midnight Special in 1975, that would be such a good watch on the channel.
Second that it would be amazing to react to that. I had the pleasure of being able to see Fleetwood Mac in 2019 at Wembley, glad I did as it turned out to be their last tour before Christine Mcvie's death!
And that video of Stevie singing wild heart in her dressing room while on a Fleetwood Mac tour is pretty awesome. Not sure of the date but maybe during the Tusk tour? It’s here on YT, just search up Stevie Nicks singing in dressing room
I saw them live in 1976 I think. I loved the song Rhiannon on the album...but listening to it live? It was like a different song full of power and the end...I was like wow what was that! Blew me away. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. People think they're soft rock... they are not...they are a like a pit bull live. Or they were haven't seem them since the 70's.
The drums are "with", but not "persistent"!
They swung with a light HUMAN touch! (Not like a metronome!)

Lovely reaction, Beth. I think the line "Thunder only happens when it's raining; Players only love you when they're playing" might be one one (two) of the greatest lines in popular music. Given that it was written so quickly, that time on the bed behind the piano must have been truly inspired.
A lot of people in listening and analyzing Fleetwood Mac forget why their name is Fleetwood Mac, Mick Fleetwood on drums and John McVie on bass! That solid bottom end allowed the others to have a solid foundation on which to layer all the wonderful singing, harmonies, and riffs on! Nothing else would sound that good without that foundation! It's a lot like life, without a solid foundation anything you build is going to be shaky and can easily fall apart!
As a songwriter myself I learned a long time ago from this song in particular that you can keep the same chords for the verse and chorus as long as you change the melodies...
That being said The melodies have to be exquisite 💜
Their music is legendary and timeless. I grew up on it as a kid. Loved it then still do now. ❤

but it "grew-up" in the 70s!

The video is actually a live take. Most bands in the days pre-MTV would shoot videos for certain shows, but would do them live, not miming.

I think it is Stevie singing the high harmony note and Christine McVie is singing the middle main harmony.
My hearing is a little compromised so I may be wrong but to me it sounds like both female voices are singing the same as the 2004 mix but Lindsey is singing his part higher, very close to the lower female voice. That takes away from the fullness of the three part harmony.

I think Stevie Nicks performance of Silent Night is the greatest performance by a female singer in the history of music. Her voice is magical.
I'm very pleased you found/used a different version of this song, more obscure, than most reactors. Love, love, LOVE the change of dynamics through the first verse harmonies, the disposition of high/low rather than the usual Stevie dominate we normally hear. Good on you!
Stevie could do the simple chord patterns because her voice is so distinctive and expressive. Her song writing was more about the lyrics and the mood. Rhiannon live on the Midnight Special is a must see for Stevie fans....one of the best live performances you will ever see.

It's seems you may not have realized this is a live performance and not just a different mix of the song. The backing vocals sound much different because -- being live -- it is missing the vocal overdubs that Stevie Nicks added on the original studio recording.
That whole album is pain and betrayal and heartbreak channelled into beautiful music.

I can nearly remember my dreams, only if I wake up the next day and the dream I dream I had I usually ends up coming true. About 15 years ago I had a dream about going to see Fleetwood mac, I told an uncle of mine about it and he said that they were going on tour.

I agree with what you said about the harmony. It does sound better to me in the other version.
Speaking of hypnotic, as mentioned about the drumming in this song, you could do "Hypnotized" with Bob Welch RIP on vocals. That song has an incredible groove. Still my favorite FM song, followed by "Oh well".

6:06 interesting conversation on this switch of harmony and melody. There's a recording of a live version of Comfortably Numb where Bowie duets with Gilmour. And for the verses Bowie sings the harmony but the melody is left out.very different interpretation.
(interesting as well that the harmony was left out on the album because Roger didn't like it, and David put it back in later)

One of my favorites, crazy that I Introduced Fleetwood Mac to my daughter when she was a young teen, she said that Stevie Nicks had a horrible voice 😮

I saw Stevie in concert two times once with Tom Petty and once with her own solo band, great shows.
Just want to correct the ''nickname'' part. It was/is ''Tee Dee'' not Stevie. That's what her mother called her until the day she passed away, Tee Dee. I don't recall Stevie ever discussing at what point it became ''Stevie'' but I'd take a guess and say school/friends.
It's not John McVie on the drums, it's Mick Fleetwood. John McVie is on the bass.
This song takes me back to a summertime in the 1970's. First cigarette, first taste of Budweiser, first girlfriend, first win on a pool table...great times.

Back in the 90's there was a TV show called Xena, Warrior Princess that was a cult hit. The star of the show, Lucy Lawless, got invited onto Saturday Night Live, and when asked what she could do, She said she did a mean Stevie Nicks impression. They said OK and Stevie Nicks Fajita roundup was born. It was one of the funniest skits that SNL has ever done and only fragments of it still exist on the internet. There is a version out there of (I think) The Chain where Stevie and Lindsey are shooting daggers at each other with their eyes--so things weren't always adult and smooth sailing.... ❤🎶

You’re not wrong in catching that the vocal arrangement is different here than the album version, but it’s a bit hard for me to believe that you didn’t realize that this is a live performance. But perhaps it’s a testament to their skill that this could be mistaken for a different mix of the studio version. On the album, Stevie sang the main vocal melody as well as adding a harmony in the background. She obviously can’t sing two different vocal lines at the same time in a live performance, so the result is going to sound different. In your defense, she did take the higher harmony in live performances in the earlier years, which I don’t understand because the chorus would have sounded fuller if she had sang the main melody, which she eventually started doing a bit later on. But the band must have clearly agreed on that being the vocal arrangement for the three singers in those years.

The studio version, nicks backs herself up throughout which she can’t do live. It differentiates the studio version as the band’s #1 Fleetwood Mac hit of all time. Still, these harmonies are silk.

I love this live version, but the studio version. All of the harmonies you refer to are just Stevie. “Lonely” “Stillness, Ohhhhh” all Stevie overlaid on the melody. It’s tremendously haunting.

Love your content! Curious question, as it relates to Fleetwood Mac......the 3 leads, Lindsey, Christine, and Stevie, all have unique, but perhaps not Steve Perry-like vocals, but when singing together, it's like a river of musical wonder. Would you disagree?
Too bad Lindsey can't stop badmouthing Stevie...like..get over it please. FM is in my top 5 bands but Stevie Nicks almost surpasses them with Bella Donna... Beautiful, touching songs. I still get tears in my eyes listening to the Highwayman..

I think the very best male singer for the "cry break" is Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues. He uses it so effectively in so many songs - Nights in White Satin, Voices in the Sky, Tonight, Question, etc. Made my wife swoon for years (and still).
No there you go again. Truer words were never spoken. A very emotionally tumultuous group of talented individuals who were able to create such an emotional division between themselves. You'll know. Thank you Beth for your analogy. This album when released and I was there, was incredibly daunting. She Stevie actually called herself a Welsh witch. Lindsay and Stevie you could tell by watching them live that there was a lot of animosity between them.
I remember these songs playing on the radio when they were released. I was a kid but I can still remember how magical these songs were... whether listening in the car going down the road or listening to the radio at home late at night.
Richie Havens does a really cool cover version of "Dreams" you might enjoy.
Simplicity is often highly effective. Consider the principal of the straight man in comedy. Gracie Allen wouldn't have been nearly as funny without George Burns as the straight man, nor would Leslie Nielsen be as funny if he didn't play his parts straight. To use a musical example, Keely Smith playing not just straight but downright flat made Louis Prima that much funnier. Of course both of them were sterling vocalists.

I like Fleetwood Mac better before Stevie Nicks came along and they went Pop; however, now I do like the band much more. I guess that I have mellowed in time. Good analysis, Beth.
Music is a funny thing. This was a truly great album, but I still can't enjoy it because of what was going on in my life when it was everywhere. The video is excellent as ever.

I agree. But Lanie doesn't have the emotional involvement in the lyrics and that makes a difference.
Sadly Dreams is Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckinghams break-up song, So i'm pretty sure it had to be hard for her to sing.

Stevie is off her face here, def not at her best vocally. Many more better performances than this.

Check out Lanie Gardners cover of this song. Her covering this song is what propelled her career. In my opinion, as great as Stevie is, Lanie does it better.
