I never use to use canned beans or canned anything for that matter, but now, I'm expecting my 4th child, and with 3 little ones to take care of and a vegetarian husband, I am very busy. So, yesterday, when I went shopping, I stocked up on canned beans. I bought a can of butter beans and when I got home, I thought, what the heck am I going to do with these? I found this recipe and was impressed how easy and yummy it looks. So I did it, and WOW! My family went nuts for it. THANKS
I just made a similar dish with Great Northern beans, and green beans. Fried them in olive oil with a clove of garlic,1/2 teaspoon of coriander and a splash of red wine vinegar. Took them off then the beans were golden brown but not crispy. Holy Cow it was delicious, not bad for a $1.00 meal! I've been trying to find something similar on the webs and low and behold it would be beloved Chef John with something similar.
Discovered this recipe last week and have eaten it 5 times since. The most comforting, delicious, moreish meals I know of. The splash of cider vinegar makes all the difference
whats a good way to eat them? i am poor and go given some by friend who works at the factory. i eat them with bacon and like them that way; but i feel like i am not using them properly
@@geomundi8333 idk if you’re still wondering what to do with butter beans but the important thing to know is that they’re an incomplete protein source - pair them with corn/lentils in order to make sure you actually benefit from them nutritionally if that’s a concern of yours, but I wouldn’t worry too much because of all the other benefits like the fibre and all the minerals. As for the cooking itself, they work pretty well in anything. Sometimes I’ll put them in stews and other times I’ll marinate them in dressing as a salad topping, other times I’ll make Plaki Gigantes and serve it with some bread. I think the fun of butter beans is that they’re incredibly versatile and add a rich creaminess to whatever dish you’re making which is beneficial if you may be someone who could be sensitive to dairy or just doesn’t have the means to buy really perishable goods like cream. My go to butter bean recipe is a soup one by vegan cocotte - I’ll pop the link down here
@@geomundi8333 ua-cam.com/video/4lWJI2kahyk/v-deo.html Sometimes I omit the lemon but more to the point - there’s no real right way of using something, as long as it tastes enjoyable and you’re well fed, that’s a win in my book. Plus, butter beans and bacon are an amazing combo so it makes sense.
Wow, you're an awesome Chef. When you make a video, you don't talk in that boring, monotonous, "I have no soul" tone of voice like most other chefs have on here! I really enjoyed this video, will definitely give this a try
i do something similar to this that works really well and is so easy. just fry off onions then add passata or tomato sauce. add extra herbs .i.e basil. then if you prefer spice add a ton of chile flakes. Next you wanna add the beans and let heat for some mins for the beans to absorb the flavours. then enjoy. simpl, healthy, cheap and tasty!
@Paradiddler45 I looked it up, never heard of butter beans in Canada before, apparently in parts of the US they are butter beans, to the rest of the world they are known as Lima beans, usually the large lima bean variety. Hope that helps. I think it's a great dish, I personally like frying beans in a bit of butter/oil mix, but the olive oil works great and some people hate butter apparently - imagine!
west-island kev we call them butter beans in the Uk but I've always wondered what Lima beans are so ty ☺️ I know the comment is 7 years old but I've only just discovered this channel lol
Indeed: Chef John had another butter bean recipe awhile back and I killed myself looking for them. I did find them at a small market and bought 20 cans to stock up before I figured it out lol
i tried making these when your video that mentioned them came out i pretty much just shallow fried them and the outside skin got abit chewy for my liking, i actuality dont mind eating these uncooked if they are just rinsed from the can that is why i had them in the cupboard in the first place i guess. anyway great ingredient used them in a chilli with kidney beans and i am thinking to try them in a salad but will def try frying them again
Fried canned kidney beans are one of the most delicious meals you can eat. You fry them for 5 to 10 minutes or until they start popping like pop corn. lol
Next time you're in New York, or if you're ever by a Dominican restaurant, you should try habichuelas con dulce. You will never look at a bean the same, Chef John.
I'm making these right now and I missed the part where he said "a can" of beans... I'm using dried beans and they are SOLID HARD, hahaha. Halfway through the cooking process I had to throw them in the pressure cooker to soften, wish me luck.
i might be inclined to pair these with chef john's other recently posted recipe: broccoli salad. of course, i'd be certain to keep my dinner guests away from any open flames afterwards.
@mistaben2k Do you think so? You find them in the tinned veg aisle in pretty much every supermarket. I always seem to have a tin of butter beans in the cupboard.
Are butter beans a northern US food? I've lived in Texas all of my life and have never heard of them. Also, they look similar to lima beans. Do they taste similar?
Chef John... I've never heard of butter beans. (even though I live in Brazil and we eat beans daily!) Do they have any other name I can look them up by? Or will this work with any type of white bean?? Thanks! Love all your recipes, as always! :)
There is a german/austrian idiom: "Jedes Böhnchen gibt sein Tönchen." wich translates to "Each bean results in one sound" :) Maybe MysteryGuitarMan should try this dish and make a video :p
Can you do this with other beans? They don't sell canned butter beans here. I have seen them in normal (dried) form, but I am too lazy to go pull out my pressure cooker for this ;)
your the greatest blaugh blaugh blaugh suck up suck up ... buddabean was a fat boxer, wonder what ever happened to him? I'd get sick of all the sicky sweet comments, but your food is pretty flippin great every time I try the recipes. I never tried butter beans, but I been meanin to widen my horizons bean wise, to add unique flavors to my garden, diet, and flatu ... naw, I'm not goin there : )
Ough, once I had a can of ckickpeas; but when I opened the can, instead of what I wanted, inside were fava beans. Never having seen what a fava bean looked like, I thought they were contaminated and spoiled garbonzos; they scared the living white out of me. Then I knew better afterwords that they were mispackaged.

"Hit that with some salt" and "these bean are beggin' to be fried" LOL
Great idea for something not so many of us think of cooking. BTW... would you recommend sherry vinegar or lemon juice instead of white vinegar?
Fried canned kidney beans are one of the most delicious meals you can eat.
You fry them for 5 to 10 minutes or until they start popping like pop corn.

hey i was wondering if you had any recipes for homemade marinara sauce?
Can I cook lima beans I pick fresh from my garden or do they need to be dried and then soaked later like store bought ones ?
@mistaben2k
Do you think so? You find them in the tinned veg aisle in pretty much every supermarket. I always seem to have a tin of butter beans in the cupboard.

i saw this on the playlist and thought it was just "pan-fried butter". lol
@AphoticCircuit agreed
If fresh beans, I'm assuming you would boil them first then cool , dry and then start ?
That's it. I'm gonna save money so one day I can hire you as my personal chef for a day.
Can you do this with other beans? They don't sell canned butter beans here. I have seen them in normal (dried) form, but I am too lazy to go pull out my pressure cooker for this ;)
