I was involved in a hour long+ gun battle a couple decades ago as a law enforcement officer. The suspect was well armed and knew what he was doing. Anyway, he was shot at by officers from several agencies and units with 9mm, 40 s&w, 45 acp, 5.56 and a couple 870's. The suspect was hit by a couple 9mm, a few 45s and a couple 5.56 rounds and still kept firing. What stopped him? One pellet, yes pellet, of 00 buck. Why? Because it was the only projectile that struck him in a vital area, the base of the brain. All of the other rounds caused superficial wounds because of placement, distance and barriers. So what did I learn? It doesn't matter what you use. If a person is motivated and hell bent on causing damage, shot placement is far more important than the caliber or gauge used against him. Just train and become proficient with your choice of weapon.

Yeah I agree. Its being a marksman with the weapon you use. If you hit the target with an arrow that's all you have to do. Seen a video a guy did where he shoots a 9mm handgun 200 yards (has a spotter to help) which takes a while to even hit target with drop, spin & wind etc. But that round will kill no matter the distance if its on target.

This is so true but there are limits. Like a .22 for example has been known to have many survivors who get shot in the head point blank. But for most calibers above .22 i think ur right.
The problem is not everyone is leo and well trained. In a panic self defense situation ur aiming for the biggest target which is the torso or maybe the legs.
If you hit, u want the best possible stopping power to knock a man back.
U can easily shoot at the torso and have a fmj go straight through and the person can keep coming at you especially if theyre on hard drugs like meth or coke

As a 38 year vet of Texas Law Enforcement, and firearms Instructor, I find this well thought out and informative. All shooting success is focused on one thing and that's accuracy, so what you can hit with is what you should carry. Jerry, you danced around the one over shadowing factor in Law Enforcement carry weapons but did not quite nail it down, and that is that agencies like New York and others are driven by cost. This is very much why the Glock and the 9mm has seen so much service, budgets are controlled by others and cheapest is usually first. The effectiveness of the 9mm cartridge has improved greatly since I first carried one in the late 70's and during the 'wonder nine' years of the 80's I chose the 45. Later, working in plain clothes the 40 S&W was my choice, now retired I'm back to the 9mm for ease of concealment. Cost will always be a factor but in the long run what is your life worth.

I don’t carry a gun anymore, but when I did I went through the same thing. At first it was a .45 ACP, then I went to a .40 S&W. Next was a 10mm then a .357 Sig in a sub compact Glock and I couldn’t stand the recoil. The one round I shot all the time though for several reasons was a 9mm. I finally said to hell with the others and carried a 9mm for the last 20 years or so. I carried a gun for right at 40 years and I don’t carry a gun anymore simply because I just don’t want to. If I ever do decide to carry a gun again it’ll be my Glock 26 or my subcompact XD in 9mm. Nothing is stamped in stone, but 90 some percent of the time gunfights end very quickly with very few rounds being fired. Why? For one very simple reason: NOBODY wants to get shot. I don’t want to get shot with a Daisy Red Rider BB gun let alone anything that uses gunpowder as a propellant. The very best scenario is still a trip to the hospital if you get shot, the worst scenario is quite obvious. Anyway, best wishes to everyone. Last, if anyone ever questions your caliber of choice, I guarantee you they wouldn’t wanna be shot with it. They’re just like anyone else, they don’t want to be shot with anything no matter what caliber it is.

Good analogy. I say carry what you're comfortable handling and firing accurately.
I shot 44 mag with full magnum loads for years and only had problems with 1 or 2 hand loads that were so hot they would shoot about 8 - 10 inches of fire out of the barrel and it would jar your teeth. Needless to say I didn't use those anymore. Other than those incidents I enjoyed shooting and hunting with it but it was too big for EDC. I carried a Glock 20SF for over 7 years and now I carry a Kimber 1911 in 10mm. I also have a Glock 23 but I'm more comfortable with the Kimber 1911.
Some can't handle the recoil and accurately fire anything bigger than .380, 38, or 9mm. If that's what they're comfortable with that's what they should use. It's better to be able to hit your target with confidence than hit everything but the target with a larger caliber.

    • @michaeltruhett4170
      @michaeltruhett4170 3 роки тому +16

@@duaneadkins1261 I agree 100%. A high caliber handgun is of no use at all if you can’t hit your target. I’d rather hit someone as many times as needed with a .380 than to miss them altogether with a 45 ACP or whatever caliber it may be. Hits count and there’s no getting around it.

Spent 9 years in emergency medicine. Seven as an Advanced EMT (paramedic) Two years as a basic EMT. My observations on the street lead me to believe that it is not caliber that counts as much as what the bullet pierces. I've seen failure to stop with .44 Rem. Magnum.(arms and legs, not torso) But have seen people dead before their body hits the ground.(central nervous system hits) My advice (for what it's worth) is to carry whatever firearms you can CONSISTENTLY hit with. BTW most fatalities from pistol cartridges were from.22 lr rimfire and .357 Magnum. Twenty two's have enough power to enter the chest, then bounce around like a pinball. 357magnum due to hydrostatic damage, ie the projectile is breaking the sound barrier. Just my 3¢ worth (inflation adjusted)

How many .44 mags guys took to the torso and sat on the curb waiting for you to show up. Just because you're shot doesn't mean you're out of the fight. Or dead. This has been done to death. It's not even a legitimate topic anymore. It started with Elmer Keith and friends and by 1980 all that could be said was said. Doesn't matter how many new clamberings ,icls, Peter Pi bullets....waste of time to discuss preference as statistic based fact.

I worked as an armed guard for several years, started off carrying a 1911 style 45ACP, then switched to a .40s&w Springfield XD and have stuck with that. The .40 is much lighter of a gun and carries more rounds with good "stopping power". I always use a good hallow point round for less penetration though. Thanks for the video.

    • @mothmagic1
      @mothmagic1 Рік тому +1

Lighter is not always better. Yes it's less weight to carry around but the other side of the coin is does saving weight mean carrying something in a caliber which lacks stopping power? Or do you still go for the light gun in a stopper caliber and accept the increased recoil and muzzle flip? If it meant a meaningful caliber in a controlable platform I'd happily accept more weight.
My definition of an effective is that if the target can still shoot back it wasn't effective.

Buy the cheapest I could find in the weight and power of the tactical round for the range trips, to be used to how the gun acted with that size and load, then go home clean the gun and load the tactical rounds.

We all know shot placement is key. But reality is you can't usually call a shot that exactly. The perp moves, you hurry a shot and off by an inch, etc.
For MOST defensive shootings, a 22 is sufficient. Carrying a larger caliber is just a little more margin for error if you have that 5% situation where a tough bad guy wants to fight it out.
Personally, I prefer a psychological stop where you don't have to actually fire. A 357, 44 Mag, or 45acp seem best for those.
But reality is, if you have to use it, anything you have and can score hits is better than just having your you-know-what in your hand.

Buckshot is king. Bird shot will put a beating on someone, but buckshot has a higher probability for death. But birdshot typically won't go through multiple walls so less of a chance to hit people/things through walls. I personally load the first with birdshot, then subsequent shots with buck. Makes my first shot less recoil and allows me to atleast identify the target then get my bearings for the next shot.

Over my 24 years on the PD, I did pick up one very useful piece of information about being shot! Again, it is a matter of where you were hit, but it also has a LOT to do with what you expect to happen should the worst case become a reality. If you believe that being shot will kill you, then a survivable wound may well become a fatal one, if, on the other hand, you believe that anyone can survive being shot then you have a much greater chance of surviving even a near fatal body strike. Funny how the mind works in such matters, so I was taught that you can and will survive if you happen to be hit in a gun fight, and to keep on fighting so long as you are physically able.

Platt & Matix of the 1986 FBI Miami FL shootout were both US Army veterans: Airborne Ranger, MP(Military Police). SA Morales did in fact end the gun battle by using a 12ga pump shotgun. 🛡. NBC made a 1980s era TV movie about the incident. The rise of .40 & 10mm type rounds led to the return of the .45acp caliber. When the 2000s era 1911 Browning patent ran out many US gun firms like Para Ord(Para USA) Auto Ord, Colt, S&W, SIG Sauer, Kimber, etc all promoted 1911a1 style guns. 🤩. Over time & with vastly improved engineering, 9mm bullets, guns returned to the main focus of most cops, target shooters, CCW. The 9mm +P offers a lot. 😉

Speaking of bears - I can say a Llama .380 is a bit under powered when you come upon a bear unexpected. I was headed up to my favorite fishing lake. It is a long drive, and then a hike of several miles to the lake. Once on foot, and yet a mile or more from the lake, I heard a bawling like a city dog, down below me, with its collar caught on a piece of brush. I continued on, wondering what a lone dog was doing way up there. Later as I approached where you could first look down on the lake, there was a sudden violent thrashing in the brush 20-30 yards off the trail. I had never experienced such violent thrashing before. I stepped over next to a big Douglas Fir tree, to see if I could see what was causing the noise beyond there. As I looked I could see nothing, not even any motion. But there was moss and pieces of bark falling on me out of the tree, but the thrashing was quite alarming - No growling or roaring. I kept trying to see what was making such a racket. Then suddenly the thrashing stopped.
I took that moment to look up in the tree. There was the prettiest Golden Bear cub you ever did see, hanging onto that tree, looking down at me. The morning sun was just shining down on him making it the perfect Walt Disney photo. And me without a camera.
Right then it hit me. I knew from Walt Disney's wildlife movies, a Mama bear will send her cubs up a tree when she senses danger. I knew right then I was in the wrong place at the wrong time! I was closer to the bear cub than Mama bear! I needed to get the hell out of there!
All I had was my fishing pole and gear, and my Llama .380. I had never felt so unprepared in my life! Was the .380 loud enough to slow down an angry mama bear? Probably not. Were the bullets capable of slowing her down any? I didn't want to have to find out. I drew the Llama, just in case. I put a round in the chamber and had 7 in the magazine. I kept looking towards where the thrashing had been, and looking either side and behind me, every few steps backwards. I kept backing up until I was well out of sight of the Fir tree. Once I felt it was safe I turned and hurried back to the truck.
I've never seen or heard a bear since. But when you go into bear country, you need to take enough stopping power, just in case. I'm fine with a .357 on me, and a .308 in the truck. Whatever you do, do not get between a mama bear and her cub! And don't run. A big fat bear can outrun a horse from standing start. And they love to chase things running away from them.

Thinking I would have to chase him was my first mistake. When the mussel flash dissipated he was about 10 feet closer and running at me. I fired 4 more shots hitting him in the chest four times. With the sixth shot my hand was on his chest when I fired and he ran into me knocking me to the ground. Standing over me he fired five rounds from a 32 caliber automatic pistol hitting several times. My partner then engaged him with a 12 ga shot gun at under 6 feet as he attempted to flee. Took 6 rounds of. 00 buck to bring him down. I had hit him 4 out of 6 times with my 38 revolver and never even slowed him down. Took 6 rounds of 00 buck to finally end this incident. He was an average size man 5’9” tall 170 lbs according to the autopsy report he was hit several times with 38 cal rounds and multiple times with a 12 ga yet no alcohol or drugs found in his system. I had carried a 44 magnum while in uniform but to big to carry while in plain clothes. Don’t think it would have made much difference in this case but who knows.

In the 1980's, I was a deputy sheriff, standard sidearm was a .38 special. I've seen a double tap to the chest end the fight.
Then I've seen 2 officers empty their revolvers into a geed up doper and just slow him down, it took 2 blasts from a 12 gauge to stop him. I train a 3 shot pattern, 2 center mass, 1 shot to the head. Use something that you will carry & practice. A .380 in the hand beats a .45 in a drawer.

I just turned 65. I'm a little older than you. I shot IPSC/USPSA back in the days when Robby Leatham and Doug Koenig were the smoking guns of the sport. I read everything I could find written by Jeff Cooper and Massad Ayoob. I had spent 4 years in the USMC from '75 to '79. So having been introduced to the 1911, carried and trained with it at a very impressionable age, no one could ever talk me out of the .45 acp...end of story. Jeff Cooper hated the 9mm. Massad called it a "mouse gun". So after watching your video and reminiscing, I look at the evolution of my own personal carry gun and have to say...Wow! Things do change. I'm carrying a Glock 43x with the 15 rd Shield Arms mag and another with a 5 rd extension for the reload. I still carry a 1911 in either 10 or 45 from time to time but I always have to ask why anymore. I guess you hit the nail on the head with your summation. Carry what you are comfortable with, can train with, and most importantly, can hit with. Good video, man!

When I was a cop, one of our guys was ambushed by a guy he locked up several times. This was at arms length, car to car. My buddy took 5 .380 hits and returned fire with a S&W J frame .38+P's.
Bad guy lost for 2 reasons. His .380's all passed thru a leather police jacket which absorbed so much energy, NONE of them penetrated over one inch!
Reason #2, of my buddy's 5 shots, 3 were later determined to be lethal hits to the head & neck. The other 2 were arm hits.

The best calibre is the one you have at hand. It all boils down to shot placement.
I live in Africa where I regularly use my sidearm (.40S&W) to shoot problematic baboons. A chest shot that shatters the heart will not stop it in its tracks, it typically still runs for about 10m before it drops. Same results seen using a high power rifle in .375 H&H calibre.
A head shot with the .40S&W will break the skull in pieces. I have had cases where the brain was lying about a meter behind the carcass. Those shots stops it where it stands.
A human is way way less resilient than a wild animal.
My point is, shot placement is the be all and end all. What ever calibre, a brain shot stops it in its tracks. A chest shot will not. A larger calibre is more forgiving to a bad shot as a little bit off target will still do a decent job

If I moved Stateside I would primarily own a handgun to protect both me, and more importantly, the members of my family. The only people with guns in the UK are the criminal fraternity, and that’s just not FAIR.

this story has a lot of extra details I won't waste your time with.
I was carjacked and kidnapped by a gang member who carried me to the kill house. He sprayed me in the eyes with pepper spray and hit me over the head wit a claw hammer.
when I cam too he said very politely, "I'M going to kill you now. I staggered to my feet, and told him I had a large sum of money in my bill fold. ("Which I did not)' But as carry was illegal back then in Texas, I couldn't carry anything what so ever that could imprint at all.
Being ex LEO, I still had the habit of carrying a back up behind my bill fold.. A tiny North American Arms .22 loaded with Stingers. I told "him hands behind your head, on your knees, your under arrest". He laughed and charged.
First shot center mass, second slightly off, third in head.
Later the ME told me the first or second Stinger blew the lower third heart to hell and back. The second just missed. The third glanced off the skull.
We fought like hell until he expired crying for his mother. I was pretty beat up
Moral of this story, It takes more than shot placement. Yes, it killed him. It did not however, stop him. With near perfect shot placement, from a man blinded by pepper spray and hit overy the head with a claw hammer. Luckily I had been shooting handguns, some with the sights removed since I was 7 or 8 years old, starting with an old pump pellet pistol handed down from my uncles. No sights, and learned to hunt squirrels in trees with it.
when the Feds returned my little pistol after the grand jury, they ask if I needed anything else. Yep I said, A M-60 in a leg holter and I'll walk around like chester. I'm not going thru this again!
I helped get the carry laws passed in Texas, and now carry a nice .45 1911 TRS by my old racing buddy Les Baer.
It has gotten me out of a few alterations since.. Does a hell of a job on a vehicle in a drive by.
The perp was Satan Disciples. A few of his friends came looking for me. They found me. They are all in prison. A good thing!

G17 for the duty gun, G26 for the concealed. I’ve seen plenty of gun shot victims and I’m convinced that caliber means very little, it’s what gets hit that counts. Higher Magazine capacity gives you more rounds to put on target, more opportunity to hit something that stops the threat. Throw in ammo costs for training, and that’s why I carry 9mm.

I would think adrenaline in the subject has a lot to do with whether they are going to stop when shot. Also, in my humble opinion, if you want stopping power, use a shotty. That will not only stop something, but is likely to knock them backwards, vest or not vest. Shotty is the ultimate disruptor.

My 2 cents on Going full circle. 40+ years ago I started carrying.38 caliber revolver as a police officer. As times changed, I was required to carry 357, then a 9 mm, and much later a 40 caliber semi-automatic. Now I am retired and have gone gone full circle back by carrying .38 revolver. The reason is:
    1) from my experience I have better shot placement compared to semi-auto. I am more comfortable with a revolver.
2)revolvers are more reliable compared to semi-auto’s. No issues concerning jamming or failure to feed. Revolvers are more forgiving towards abuse.
    3) there have been advancements in .38+p bullet performance

I'd rather be missed by a .45 than hit by a .22. Grew up with that stopping power debate. Bullets can ONLY stop a person two ways.
1.) Shut down of the central nervous system.
2.) Asphyxiation. Blood loss to the brain causes unconsciousness and total body shutdown.
To achieve either of these, shot placement is key. A .22 in the brain is equally as effective as a .44 magnum... just a lot less messy. I once saw a photograph of the victim of a car accident. He had a fence post - 4 X 4 - clean through his chest and out his back. They had to take a chain saw and cut the post to take him to the hospital. Surprisingly he was still conscious. If you had placed a gun in his hand, he could have pointed it and pulled the trigger.
If a 4 X 4 fence post won't immediately render a person unconscious or dead... NOTHING you can carry is guaranteed to do so. Thus I would rather have as many rounds as possible in a package I can shoot accurately and dependably. For me, my choice is a 9mm loaded with Underwood's Xtreme Defenders +P+. If that won't get the job done... either I am having a very bad day or I am in the wrong line of work. Just my .02.

My first pistol was given to me by my Dad. Before he bought it, we would go to an outdoor shooting range and shot his 357 Dan & Wessen. We would collect all the brass and start to reload hundreds of 9 mm rounds. We did not have 9 mm pistols. So My Dad bought me a Sig Sauer P226 back in 1989. I get further hand gun training from my uncle. My uncle taught me to shoot with one hand. I got proficient and built fundamentals of shooting where I could shoot any caliber. Many years after I graduated college and could afford purchasing more guns, I purchased a Sig Sauer P220 thinking of great knock down power. This 45ACP had more kick but was manageable. Fast forward to 2021 and got a Sig Sauer P226 357 Sig. The 357 Sig ammo was expensive but was available compared to popular rounds like 9 mm and 45ACP. Shoot the 357 Sig and found it to be very powerful yet manageable. Lots of muzzle blast / flash. I believe it has top knock down power than my P226 9mm and possibly better than my 45ACP with added accuracy in long range shooting due to its flatter trajectory from the extreme speeds it can attain. I just recently purchased a Sig P365 X 9mm with the Romeo Red Dot. Using John Corriea's shared videos on active self protection, most gun fight encounters result in wins by FIBS or fudge, I've Been Shot. So first to hit the opponent is critical to dominating a fight.
So I like the P365 X for its portability and ease of carry concealment. It also carries 12 + 1 so high capacity is there. Under a chaos or SHTF scenarios, I will primarily use my P226 357 Sig for incredible shooting distance accuracy and knock down power.

I just bought a s&w 40 recently as my first gun. This is mostly due to the fact 9mm is scarce but also the 40 cal ammo is cheaper. I bought some PMC bronze hollow point 165 grain for learning and target practice. They dealer said it should be sufficient enough to stop an aggressor until I learn the gun and get some better home defense ammo.

I carry a .45 ACP XDm compact, EVERYDAY. Recoil doesn't bother me. When I talk to people about carrying, I tell them to carry what you are comfortable with or you won't carry it. Better to have a .380 on your hip than a .44 magnum in the safe at home. Personally, when you throw out exotic bullet designs, I like the idea of a nice heavy bullet. Garbage ammo in a .45 ACP is better than garbage ammo in a 9mm.
I know cops that have made the full circle back to 9mm, I know others that carry nothing but .45 ACP, whatever they are doing.
I don't fault anyone for what they carry, I commend them for carrying.

Very cool video. I come from a family of cops and businessmen and though I chose the business path, I learned a tremendous amount from the LEO’s. The one common denominator was always, what works best for you with regards to shot placement? To this day, I have two EDC weapons that I carry depending on attire and location, a Springfield XDs .45 with a Bladetech IWB holster and Speer Gold Dot HP or a S&W 442 with a DeSantis Grip Clip and Hornady Critical Defense rounds. I train 2 to 3 Times p/month with these and am very proficient with both. At the end of the day, I train with one very important thing in mind and that is the fact that I am armed for a very specific purpose and that is to defend myself and my family! I am not a superhero and these tools do not make me immortal nor am I out looking to fend off the next terror attack. In my humble opinion, as long as you act responsibly, put in the work and, most importantly, recognize the limitations of the tools that you have, any round has merit and can be a useful tool in a pinch!

For me you want accuracy and high capacity with low recoil, good penetration and fast follow up shots. The 5.6 offers all this, the only problem is nobody makes a compact 5.7 pistol yet, and it’s an expensive round to practice with.

Even extensive training simply isn't statistically necessary for the average citizen. Fact is, you are more likely to drown in your bathtub, looking at the numbers, than get into an armed conflict with another person in your lifetime. If you're not in organized crime, military, law enforcement, or some other special high-risk high-profile position, basic conflict avoidance skills are all that is needed. In the highly improbable event you need more than that, just having a gun is another deterrent as most crimes of opportunity will seek an easier target and the conflict has ended. In the remote statistical probability that even that isn't good enough, even shooting say a home intruder with a 22LR a few times is likely enough to get them to cease and desist as its just not worth it.
So IMO a 9mm wins because you can get smaller 9mm pistols than 45ACP pistols, and its more than adequate in getting an attacker to cease attacking. Anything more and you've already abandoned need and transitioned into "want", and when it comes to want, just buy whatever makes you feel good because at that point its really all that matters. If you feel more powerful/cool w/ a 45, buy a 45.

@@BoopSnoot While your statements are, largely, accurate, so is the other guys. Your average person is unlikely to ever need to draw their carry pistol. However, if you're going to carry it, you should be proficient enough in its use to effectively hit the target. No, you don't need to try and replicate SERE training, but you should certainly put in the time at the range to make operating your firearm second nature.

I’ve found that one thing to look out for with 44 specials is that some hollow point rounds won’t expand because those projectiles were more designed for the 44 magnum. The advancements in ammo technology renders any research done Pre-2000's mute. 12 inches of penetration is obtained in all the major hand gun calibers. Its ALL about shot placement. A 22 Magnum or 25 is just as deadly with well paced shots, a 45 or 10mm is survivable if the shots are inaccurate. Me? I carry my "workhorse gun", a Gen3 Glock 19 with either Federal HST or Speer Gold Dot everyday. I practice twice a month with this gun. I also carry a 1911, an all steel Jericho 9mm, a Canik TP9SA 9mm, a Sig P226 40sw, a XDm 45, a CZ Sp01 9mm, basically I like my guns and I carry what I feel like carrying. The main thing is Practice and Speed. Most fights ARE NOT out at 21 ft, maybe for Cops because they are showing up to an already escalated situation. Us civilians? They happen within arms reach, and they happen FAST. I go to the range and never witness people practicing at, say, 7 ft and speed. Certainly no one is getting their heart rates up before shooting. I jog in place while loading the mag, then expel that magazine before my heart rate settles. Yes I get weird looks, and they ask "Why are you shooting at that target so close, and you aren't aiming?" Because, most situations where you need to use your weapon are over in 7 seconds. SPEED and PRACTICE, MUSCLE MEMORY and ACCURACY. Above all SAFETY and RESPONSIBILITY!

You have done your homework! There is a gentleman that is one of the world's elite gunmen that I've seen his video can't remember his name but he said the same thing. Go jog or run fast to pickup your heart rate then load, shoot etc.. and you will definitely notice the difference. When you do this it's more like a real situation or confrontation.

I Agree, it is important to also do dry Fire practice, and pratice with what you carry. Gun & ammo.
