For the PHEV xDrive40e there is a slight variation to this procedure. When you go to access the fill plug from the underside there are two aluminum coolant pipes(that go to HV battery in the rear) that pass in that space, preventing you from getting any tools on the fill plug. To access the fill plug you need to remove the driver side wheel, and then loosen the splash shield just behind where the axle passes through. You can get to the fill plug from there using a 12" extension.
If you are doing this at home, make sure you have a long 14 mm wrench. The factory really gets those plugs on tight. A short wrench may not give you enough torque to break them loose.
Man! That guy has been killing lately with amount of videos he does! It’s very appreciated! I have the F10 with N55 but do watch all the videos with Gareth
Thanks again, as always Gareth. Great video for the F15! This is on my to do list, so I do really appreciate it. Just trying to get over the sticker shock for the $120/ Liter for a G5 fluid. Keep the F15 DIY video's coming!
I had my 2017 F15 X5 with 59k miles had its both diffs using Red Line 75w85 API GL5 gear oil and the transfer case using Red Line MT-LV 70w75 API GL4. All fluids were dark in color and the front differential fluid was the worst. After taking the X5 on a trip I noticed my gas mileage increasing slightly.
Thank you for these DIY videos (Rear and Front differential). Are you planning to post videos for 2019 X5 G05 models? If not, can you please comment if there are any differences?
Great video as always. You certainly save us a lot of money. What is the part number if you just want to buy the crush washer. Or do you need to buy the plug. Thanks.
Great video. As the video doesn't cover it, is there enough clearance to fit the torque wrench in that tight space to tighten the fill plug? Do we have to remove the splash shield?
Hi Robert, the differential takes about 1L give or take, no more than that. We still had a bit left in the fill tool from the two 500ML bottles we poured in.
Muy buen video. Tengo un X6 E71-72. Del 2012 Me podrás decir la cantidad de aceite que lleva. Esque no tengo información por ningún sitio que he mirado.. Gracias de antemano.
Hi Tfunk, you always want to replace those as they are one-time use. We filmed multiple jobs with this X5, which required the plate to come off again, so we saved the new hardware for the final DIY.
The process will be very similar! The plugs will look a bit different and the locations of them may vary a bit, but the process itself is straight forward.
@@fcpeuro ... thanks for your replay 👍🏼 just done this job on my 2009 E70 X5 Xdrive. Interestingly only 600 millilitres of the original front diff oil came out 🤔 seems a bit low as the rear diff had almost 1 litre (950 ml).
I changed the front differential fluid and rear differential fluid and transfer case fluid. A few weeks went by and now I hear a grinding noise when I turn right. Only when I turn rite and not all the time. Should I re change all the fluid again? This wasn’t happening before.
@ I did, I think it’s the fluid I used for the rear differential. I got the oem fluid and I’m going to drain and refill with the oe fluid hopefully that does the trick. Because I did the front differential first because of all of the horror stories that I read and saw here on UA-cam, and then I did the transfer case. And everything was fine but when I did the rear differential I had to get 75w-90 and that’s not exactly what is called for the rear differential, it’s 70w-80. I will let you know what happened. Hopefully I didn’t destroy my rear differential. When I pull the fluid hopefully I don’t see any sparkle.
Which liquy moli oil should I replace for the front differential and which one for the rear differential and which one goes for the transfer case. Thank you
Hi my front diff broke and leaked oil from it, ive had the diff replaced but the car stinks of the gear oil, what can i do to fix this? Id appreciate your help
A reset adaptation is only typically done when this service is being done as a repair to clear a code for example. Under normal operation and service no reset is needed!
About to take on this task on my F15 X5. I want to ensure clarity...this is NOT the QMV differential that comes with the adaptive suspension, is that correct? I'd swear I had adaptive suspension, but a vin decoder and my diff looking exactly like this video indicates that I do not.
Fcpeuro I’m local about 15 minutes away. I’m looking for a fuel return hose on a 2005 vw Passat 1.8t. I can not find one anywhere not even the dealer. Any help would be great. This is the daily and need it back up and running, can’t keep putting miles on the s4.
1 second ago Boss, i have x1 2010 model, the front diff is gone, and im looking to buy another one, my diff details 2.79 7583773 . And it’s very hard to find, My question can i replace with other diff number? Or should be the same. Please advise thanks 🙏

I was wondering and looking for the same!
I think I'm going to buy an F15 X5 after watching all these videos from Gareth. 🤣
Great video as always. You certainly save us a lot of money. What is the part number if you just want to buy the crush washer. Or do you need to buy the plug. Thanks.
Hi Roy, thank you for wrenching with us! Unfortunately no part number provided as the rubber o-ring seal comes pre-installed on the plugs.

Why would you torque spec a fill plug ?
How much fluid was needed to refill?
Hi Robert, the differential takes about 1L give or take, no more than that. We still had a bit left in the fill tool from the two 500ML bottles we poured in.
transfer case fluid diy?

Hi do you have a video how to change front diff on bmw x5 f15 40d 2014 ?
Hi Niki, we do not have a video on the differential replacement, but we do have a service video coming out soon on it!
Great Vid. Isn't 600 ml for the front diff?
How do you fix a leaking transfer case?
Did y’all reuse the reinforcement plate bolts or use new ones?
Hi Tfunk, you always want to replace those as they are one-time use. We filmed multiple jobs with this X5, which required the plate to come off again, so we saved the new hardware for the final DIY.
@@fcpeuro got it! 👍
How much G2 fluid is required?
Great video as always guys... quick question. Would this be the same or very similar job on the E70 X5 ? like the rear diff is ?

Conveniently not showing the torqueing of the fill plug
Is it okay to use liqui moly gear oil for the diffs?
Why u use G2 for front and G3 for back
Is there a torque spec for those clamps ?

I think you need to reset the electronics for the transfer case let it know it has new fluid ,changes torque vectoring.

do you have a video for a f15 transfer case?
Hi James, we have a video in our playlist on the transfer case mount replacement!
Good job!
looked like the new plugs didn't go in well with hand
E71 X6 2008 xdrive 35d: rear diff, there are three sections (6 plugs) for oil. What are the correct types of oil and quantities, please?
Hi my front diff broke and leaked oil from it, ive had the diff replaced but the car stinks of the gear oil, what can i do to fix this? Id appreciate your help
You will want to use some degreaser and a power washer to try and get some of the residual oil off the underneath of the vehicle.
Mines broke too😭... its so damn expensive
Is the X5 actually Gareth’s car?))
What is part number for the plug?
The part number for the plug is 33117525064
Thanks👍
The 6 bolts that attach the reinforcement plate to the chassis are one time use bolts. You're not supposed to reuse them again.
So what happened?
I agreed that they should be replaced just like bolts for oil pan (touque + 90 deg, they were stretched) or transmission pan.
I thought it had to be reprogrammed after new fluid change.

You gonna need to reset the adaptations after the TC fluid change
No. Only when changing hardware
@@ElCarboonwrong brother.
Adaptations must be changed after every fluid change. Look it up in the bmw service bulletin

Make sure to reset adaptions for the metal shield you torqued for no reason 😂😂😂🤡🤡🤡🤡
