    You realize that Snape applying for the job each year, and not getting it was an act right? It was a story made up by both Dumbledore & Snape, so when Voldermort eventually came back, Snape had a plausible excuse to go back to the DeathEaters.... He says as much to Bellatrix & Narcissa in the HBP. He wasn't looking for a way out. He would never abandon Lily's son like that. He may not have liked Harry, but he was protecting him for Lily. He wouldn't have left that obligation for anything.

    I've always considered the problem with the defense of the dark arts' teacher position more of a coincidence/sort of an honest bad luck streak, rather than an actual curse on a job title.
    Pretty sure Snape just thought his predecessors (before he finally got the job) were just all incompetent, unsuitable, sub par teachers, tho

    I would have to disagree partially with that statement. I do believe snape wanted the possibility to finally rest, but I don't believe for a second that snape regarded himself as being under dumbledores control, or that he held the current fanvision of an evil dumbledore. The way I interpret snapes relationship with dumbledore is through snapes perspective. Hogwarts is his home, and dumbledore is the only person in the world that truelly knows him, and there is an enormous amount of mutual trust. I therefore think that snape regarded dumbledore as his best and only true friend and mentor, altough he absolutely cared for hogwarts as his home and his collegues, but in a more superficial way.

    • @user-pm3wx1gq9j
      @user-pm3wx1gq9j Рік тому +14

      yes! people keep spewing this evil Dumbledore and I just think it's too harsh. he just did what he had to do bc he knew that ppl would not be able to defeat voldemort without making sacrifices. Snape grew up with Dumbledore, admiring him and probably considering him somewhat of a father figure bc he was the only adult that ever told him he was intelligent, while slughorn ignored him in favour of James, for example. also, I believe snape's morals are very similar to Dumbledore's

      U mean the same man that told him to shut the fuck up when Sev almost got killed to a werewolf because otherwise it would be known Dumbledore let a highly dangerous creature into a school full of children breaking the law. Not to mention it would get his favorite gryffindors into trouble. He made Snape have a life debt to Potter. Never stopping the bullying.
      The same Dumbledore that said what will u give me in return for protecting my own order members when told they were in danger and how they needed protection.
      The same Dumbledore that let Sirius Black rot in Azkaban so Harry wouldn't grow up spoiled and would go along with quote "Raised like a pig for slaughter"

    • @true7870
      @true7870 Рік тому +2

      @shefihameed9334 Do you realize Severus Snape had no one who loved or cared about him. That he was maybe tired of a life of being bullied and enslaved. That the one person he was obsessively in love with had chosen to marry his childhood bully and have that person's child. Abandoned him over a stupid word said in a situation caused by the man she would later marry. Who wouldn't be super depressed. Doesn't mean you set depressed people up for death. Dumbledore was part of the ruin that was Severus Snape's life. In fact Dumbledore is the main character responsible for ruining a lot of people's lives by not taking responsibility properly as both a teacher and headmaster.

  • @asdf-gh8vd
    @asdf-gh8vd Рік тому +112

    Snape followed Dumbledore's plan until the moment he died. There's no way Snape wanted "out." He even took up the post of being the headmaster to fulfill his promise to protect the school after Dumbledore's gone. Everything that Snape did after he became Dumbledore's person was to repent for Lily's death. In his final moment, Snape was begging Voldemort to let him go back into the school to find Harry because he NEEDED to deliver Dumbledore's final instruction to Harry. If he lived, I doubt his relationship with Harry would improve but there would at least be respect between them. Although I can't remember if there was a line in the book where it explains why he was applying for the cursed post every year, one thing is for sure. Snape was not such a coward. (Prince's Tale book 7.)

    As a kid I thought he wanted the position to break the curse. He was exceptional with the Dark Arts, going so far as to make a potential lethal (pretty damn lethal if you don't know the specific healing spell) at 16, so finding a counter curse should be in the realm of possibility. It is sad knowing he never truly valued his life, but he did at least do the future generations proud. He was a strict instructor who made sure his students learned, even if his methods were unsavory and cruel

      I thought it was how empty he felt without Lily in his world that he no longer wanted to be haunted by her ghost. Everytime he looks in Harry's eyes you see Snapes tone change and face softens like a distant memory of loved ones coming back. He was in mental agony, severely depressed, and alone. What do severely depressed people with regret do? Find an out!😢

    • @marlissagonzales4318
      @marlissagonzales4318 6 місяців тому

      I have no doubt he was severely depressed and wanted to be with Lily. He does blame himself for her death, however, and sometimes (not all) a guilty conscience will cause a person to want to right that wrong. Living until he's no longer useful to her/ her family was his self-established punishment IMO
      Snape was canonically a Potions Master by 21 (1982). He had access to obscure and forgotten recipes and knowledge capable of creating more, vast knowledge of lethal (to one's self and others) spells and curses and access to a Forest of potential deadly plants and animals. He had plenty of options, and chose not to take the out until Harry was an adult and the horcruxes almost completely destroyed.
      It is Highly likely that he was trying to use the position for self-sacrificial reasons, but he also had easier, quicker and guaranteed ways to end himself than a year long teaching job that in the 5 years we witnessed have only 1 actual death. 3 of the professors suffer fates worse than death after leaving so that was more likely to happen than him die in June

      I'm not sure if Fawkes would have been able to heal Dumbledore. That ring contained a fragment of Voldemort's soul, and (if I remember correctly) horcruxes are considered one of the darkest forms of magic. Pure evil. Healing something like that is different to curing Basilisk venom. And a clash between something that dark and Fawkes (literally the exact opposite) might have caused some unfavorable reaction.
      Besides, Snape only managed to temporarily trap the curse in Dumbledore's hand, and he's an expert on both potions and the Dark Arts, not to mention that he knew Voldemort quite 'intimately', which may have been useful. If there was some way to cure the curse he probably would have known.

    Having the position does not imply dying.
    Actually, the only one who died at the end of the year was Quirell (and Barty if you count him but he was an usurper and Moody had accepted the job for only one year anyway).

    Severus Snape wanted to teach D.A.D.A. for years, but Albus Dumbledore denied him the job repeatedly, partly for fear of Snape straying back towards the darkness, and partly to keep him around for longer, given the curse on the position. I doubt Snape would want to die before Harry, He loved Lily so much that he’d do anything for her even after death which would be Protecting Harry also not to forget he also owed James Potter for when James saved Snape from werewolf Lupin.

    I recently had a hilarious realisation about snape (I’m a snape hater but I don’t think it matters too much in this sense)
    Snape famously hated the marauders.
    So he was living his life relatively happy because they were all out of his life: one in prison, two dead and one somewhere doing something but away from snape so he wasn’t too bothered.
    Now in a few years time he ended up teaching Harry who famously looked like James, then Lupin returned to Hogwarts and they had to work together, being actual colleagues (and then later he’d interact with him regularly through the order) then he found out Peter was alive and Sirius was out of prison and he had to interact with them both: in the order with Sirius and on death eater meetings with Peter. He was probably losing sleep every night expecting James to resurrect somehow and come back to kick his arse😂

    Basically no one knew Tom Riddle applied for the job and Dumbledore only guessed at the fact Voldemort cursed. So no, it wasn’t common knowledge and Snape wanted the job because he was good at it and liked that job.

  • @Tarantio1983
    @Tarantio1983 Рік тому

    another way to read it is that Snape knew 1st hand just how fanatical and dangerous the forces Voldemort would send against Harry, he also took of his oath over Lilly's corpse to do his best to protect her son which was reaffirmed later with Albus ... so he wanted the job so he could teach Harry how to look after himself, because oaths and pacts sealed in blood and on the spirits of the dead are some seriously powerful magic!

    for years nothing happened and Dumbledore never asked him to do anything in that time because Voldemort was weak. So for 10 years he was in a very comfortable position with Dumbledore's protection against the Death Eaters, there's no way he wanted out in that time. He applied every year because 1. he didn't know it was cursed or 2. to keep the front that he "wanted the job" so when Voldemort came back, he had an excuse.
    It was until the events of the 6th book, that he started to feel it was too much and even then, he didn't abandoned Dumbledore because of Lily.
