I'm building the Tenth with Clara, but in 3 ways at once. The deck will have a base core of sorts, and then I'll have three sets of exchangeable cards that I can swap in and out to change up the gameplay. One set each for Clara being W, B, and G. The W sub-deck will be all in on Time Counters (suspend, vanishing, and others) basically just a big upgrade of the pre-con. The B sub-deck will be Storm by using Tennant's triple time travel to line up a bunch of suspends and then storm off one big turn. (time travel can also add counters, not just remove them, and you choose whether to add or remove _per card_ so you can line up a bunch of suspended things pretty easily with Tennant's activated ability) The G sub-deck will be a more traditional original Jhoira style cheat out big spells and big beaters.
I will show everyone how good matt smith is! I think it is super powerful and I dont understand why more people are not seeing it! suspend some insane cards for free, attack with unblockable amy and just get insane cards out super quickly!
For Second Doctor + Council of Four, don't overlook that Second Doctor can still trigger Council for yourself, since Council says "player" and not "opponent"! If you draw one card at your draw step, then reach end step and draw your 2nd card for the turn off of Second Doctor, Council will trigger and draw you an additional card. It's a good way to break parity on that effect.
New goal: Cast World at War with the Twelfth Doctor out and go into the anti-war speech: "and we're off! Fingers on buzzers! Are you ready to play the game!"
for even more flavor cast Truth or Consequences or somehow cast Truth or Consequences from exile or graveyard to have everybody vote 3 times (and then add in The Valeyard to vote again)
This set gave me a new bukkit list item too! Cast "Everybody Lives!" to stop someone from winning and then win on my upkeep with "Happily Ever After" for that ultimate fairytale ending!
I’d like to note that T2 SJS, T3 Academy Manufactor, T4 Third Doctor leaves you with two treasures (and 2 foods & 3 clues). If you hit your fifth land drop, you can cast a T5 Old Gnawbone, get 3 tokens, and attack in for 10 with The Third Doctor. Even if they block half the damage, that leaves you with a 25/25 Doctor at the beginning of your next turn.
Personally, I made the Second Doctor into a monarch deck. I used Clara as the companion to make the deck Jeskai. Its group hug to discorage attacking me, but then with the 9th doctor I double (triple with clara) all my monarch upkeep triggers from the courts.
War Doctor with Clara Oswald is mardu combination I didn’t know I needed. I already had a few pieces together for an Isshin deck. I just need to lean more into blink with pieces like Norin and saltskitter. These partners in crime are about to do some outrageous stuff. Hopefully I don’t lose too many friends in the process…
re: the eleventh doctor: I think you’re missing out on one of the big advantages you get from suspend, HASTE! you suspend a 3 drop, remove 2 counters with Amy, and it comes down with haste on your next turn! my plan is a jeskai weenies deck, which was an option you touched on briefly, but I think deserves more attention. also surprised you didn’t mention braid of fire for that deck!
I built The War Doctor/Ryan Sinclair after watching Gavin's on Shuffle Up and Play. Only ran it a few times, and got so scary, I was killed in each game. I am so happy seeing powerful Boros Commanders.
yeah the combo with that saga, and ozolith really creates an arch enemy situation like what aetherflux reservoir does, and in boros just makes it super sweet.
I feel like we haven't had anything this strong since Osgir. Most Boros Legends are equipment or token focused. Osgir does tokens differently, though. Feels like folks are getting more creative with design.
Additional trivia... The doctors TARDIS had its chameleon circuit was fixed once but was broken again so the show could continue using the police box as a TARDIS prop.
I like the Second Doctor with Vislor Turlough for an esper stax / forced draw build with things like Viceling to punish the high hand sizes while also making it difficult for them to bring their hand size back down.
I'm one of those weirdos who really likes the First Doctor's episodes and such, and the actual First Doctor, Susan, and TARDIS cards are all just so flavorful and bonkers fun that I was genuinely surprised that they put any amount of theme or flavor since he's honestly the most blank slate/bland of the numbered Doctors to make cards out of (I say that with love). So, I'm honestly enamored with the idea of a Planechase deck with them and just random shenanigans happening every turn. No real win con, just travelling and cascading until you end up somewhere XD
For the Seventh Doctor, also play cards without a mana cost! If they guess high, then you can play Crashing Footfalls like the Professor did in shuffle up and play! Inevitable Betrayal!
I know basically nothing about Dr Who, but this episode was so interesting simply because Rachel is such a great deck builder, and her sheer joy at finding all the synergies is so entertaining. A+ content
I like to play ultimate mindgames with the Seventh Doctor, and include uncastable spells, Inevitable Betrayal, Mox Tantalite. Restore Balance is hella funny.
I built the War Doctor with Susan for green and a manadork in the command zone. I was against two decks that both were able to kill me on their next turn. Got Flamekin Herald and Clara on the battlefield and cast Susan from the command zone. My only 1-drop in the deck was my sol ring already in play. 160 counters on the war doctor, took out both players on attack. I hadn't even realized the interaction between a low cost Susan and the doctor until I was about to cast it. @@KBgamer2010
For the 12th Doctor, if you want to go the "Forcefully donate evil things" route, you can also run Sundial of the Infinite so you don't have to worry about getting 2 copies of your own bad cards that you're giving away.
Twelfth Doctor with your own Possibility Storm means you get to copy your first spell on a turn before it gets exiled from the stack, as long as you're willing to give an opponent a copy of that spell. Twelfth Doc can also play in the 99 for a War Doctor + K9 deck which should have lots of impulse draw and has its own reason to play extra combat spells. Tuned War Doctor + K9 lists should run Thought Lash and some way or ways to find TARDIS to do the 1cc cascade trick.
Professor from Tolarian Community College made a great Seventh's deck with suspend spells. Even if your opponent guessed wrong, you can still choose to NOT reveal the card and get a clue i.e. you can even make an opponent guess a land card.
As someone who built a Grixis Ninth Doctor / Clara Oswald deck as soon as I saw them previewed, I feel vindicated Addendum: Bitterblossom, Dark Confidant, Keen Duelist, Descent into Avernus are great cards.. but if you run anything like them, also run cards that gain you life in your upkeep. I have literally drained myself out with just these cards and the Doctor. Player beware
After playing my 10th doctor/Rose Tyler deck for awhile now. Most of the times, Rose will get removed first before the 10th doctor, or they will remove both and still have other threats on board or they will remove the other things on board and prepare for whats in suspend while having to deal with rose/10th. the deck becomes a choose your poison on what to remove since anything can benefit your game plan usually, esp if your also running jhoira or eldrazis.
10:41 I currently have a Thirteenth doctor + Rose Tyler deck that focuses on suspend and it's very quickly become my go to, I can't suggest building them together enough for those that want a different flavor of timey wimey shenanigans
Side note with Amy and Chronomantic Escape: You don't need to buff Amy's power in order to cast it every turn, since one counter gets removed on upkeep and Amy will remove the other two with her base power. Also, toss an Embercleave on Amy for shenanigans

Just want to add to the leach 12 doctor: Glorious end exile all spells and abilities on stack, so once your opponent copy resolves the turn ends and you lose your copy, so you will not have to worry about your next turn, but also you cant recover it from graveyard since it was exiled. But the fun lesson to learn here is... you can do the same for all the other leaches, just add Obeka, brute chronologist (and/or sundial of infinite): at least once a turn you can cast something give a copy away and once only your stuff is on the stack end the turn and you are free of consequences, (you can even do that for the pacts)
The War Doctor would require me to put every piece of protection I own into it so going to stick with the 10th Doc/Rose Tyler as my Doctor Deck :) My playgroup was just flabbergasted by the amount of suspended cards which allowed me to pull out a win. Like you said with War Doc, second time around they know it can be dangerous. Time counters as a resource is a lot of fun. Rose Tyler feels about as dangerous as War Doc. She can get really big, really fast! I think people are going to want to remover her over the 10th Doc most times.
You could consider Sun Droplet for that Ninth Doctor + Clara build. Yeah it seems weak on first read, but each up keep and multiple upkeeps it can add up fast.
I was interested in building Second Doctor & Vislor Turlough, because with no max hand size and all the free card draw, Vislor will be doming people for a lot. Add some clones to copy Vislor to ensure all your opponents have a deal with the Black Guardian.
Thank you *very* much for this Rachel & Murph. I've been trying to figure out all the various pairings and how they make a playable, focused deck among the Dr. Who commanders. In particular, I've been trying to build them towards Vechicles. That said, the three precon decks each have very different themes, and often two or three sub-themes per deck, so there's enough 'blur' in the deck design process that it's hard to pick out what's helping and what isn't (e.g., the UWG deck builds both on Historic cards and on Tokens).
Really fun thing about twelfth doctor and twinning staff is if you copy twinning staff and give one to an opponent, you can effectively make a commander game into a 2 v 1 v 1. "Hey, I'm gonna team up with you till these other 2 are gone. Every time I copy a spell, you get 2 copies as well"
Rachel and I have very similar deck building ideologies so I’m glad she loved the 12th Dr as much as I did. I’m a bit sad they didn’t talk about how silly when you cast Vislor Thurlough; Opponents Demonstrate resolves gives it to a player, your copy resolves give it to a different player and then the original resolves for either yourself or the remaining player, 3 copies of your companion running around making more chaotic nonsense in the game. Hopefully you guys do a mini episode on the 3 cards from the secret lair drop or even just mash in Laura Croft in the video too.
Eleventh + Amy is quite strong if played at high power levels: several unique combo lines, less creatures to block you, cheaper things with higher impact (like dockside extortionist). Seems underrated to me.
I like all the different combinations of doctor and companion. I also like the amount of effective “3 commander combinations” ie 11/Amy/Rory or 1/tardis/anything
I went with white with Ninth + Clara, because well Assemble the legion and enchantress stuff in white. Divine visitation. Green is also good at that but the temur Ninth deck is counters based but there is not yet a beginning of upkeep poliferate card yet. A great job by the designers to make such interesting doctors and companions.
For the Seventh Doctor, I would have gone with Ace over Nyssa personally. Ace still lets you manipulate your artifact count, and she can fight creatures defending player controls to make sure they can't block McCoy. Then you get all the benefits of G as well, such as all the extra ramp, rather than being only in WU. For sagas, I would personally prefer Sixth and Ian. Again, adding G for ramp and such, and Baker gives you a copy for free up front. Also, Twinning Staff and Errant Street Artist both work with Ian, since Replicate copies the spell. For Tennant, in addition to Training Grounds, also add in Heartstone and Zirda the Dawnwalker. Heartstone makes all activated abilities of all creatures cost 1 less, and Zirda makes _all_ of your activated abilities from anywhere cost 2 less. (remember people, the Ikoria companions don't have to be your chosen companion; they can still just be in the 99)
If you want to play Clara and 12th together, use Backgrounds. There are a few auras and equipment like Thornbite Staff, that give triggered abilities, but if you have Passionate Archaeologist or Tavern Brawler, then both Clara and The Doctor will have that triggered ability AND Clara will copy it. Also flavor win for The Impossible Girl to have multiple and varied character backgrounds
I built the Second Doctor with Vislor Turlough. Howling mine, jace berlen, dictate of kurphix, font of mythos, ebony owl, black vise and other effects that force draws and then punish excessive cards in hand. Oh and fractured identity to give all my friends a copy of vislor.
I thought it'd be fun to imagine how these pairings would act if they met! 1/Yasmin: Yaz knows about regeneration, but she always somewhat struggled with the concept so I think meeting 1 would be a bit of a mindscrew for her, especially considering she has romantic feelings for her version of the Doctor. 1 would adopt Yaz like he adopted all his companions and Yaz is the most willing to just, let the Doctor do what they want so it'd be good 2/Leela: Leela was meant to be a "primitive" character who believes in superstitions and violence. 2 loved having a good time and goofing around, when he needed to get messy he preferred to be subtle about it. I feel like they'd clash, but Leela was able to grow on 4 so I'm sure she'd grow on 2 as well 3/Sarah Jane: They've met 4/Sarah Jane: They've also met 5/Susan: They met in the 5 Doctors special but also I think Susan would find it hilarious that her grandfather regenerated into such a young body 6/Barbara: Barbara would hate 6 tbh. He's too showy and cocky. Also, going off show canon and not extended media, I don't think she even knows that regeneration is a thing 7/Nyssa: This would be a genius dream team. I do wonder if Nyssa would eventually grow disheartened with 7's machinations, she's often referred to as being too sweet and 7 is famously a darker incarnation of the Doctor, but I'd love to see their brains work together 8/Ian: They'd get along fine but, like Barbara, I don't think Ian knows what regeneration is so that'd be pretty impressive 9/Clara: Teeeechnically Clara met 9, kinda sorta? But they never got to interact really, so I'm not sure how 9 would think of Clara. 9 tried to keep things hidden and pretend things were hunky dory and Clara would never stand for that. She also knows way too much about the Doctor's life for him to be comfortable around her I think 10/Rose: They've met 11/Amy: They've met 12/Romana: I would kill to see this pairing depicted. Romana's personality is a lot like Clara tbh, I think he'd appreciate having a second chance to... undo the damage he's done to those around him with another Time Lord like Romana 13/Yaz: Technically your pairing video with her isn't out but I'm assuming it'll be the face commanders so Fugitive/Martha: Martha would get such a kick out of finding out that the Doctor has been a black woman but then she'd really hate Fugitive I think. One of the things about the Doctor that Martha loved was his refusal to take the easy way out and turn to violence, which Fugitive does all the time War/K-9: The best possible pairing. I genuinely think that if War had had K-9 throughout the Time War than he might never have even considered using the Moment
I am considering making The 6th Doctor + Peri Brown. Being able to convoke out big historic cards and copy them is just very fun. Plus who doesn't want to copy Three Blind Mice?
Know this is kinda late/not super relevant for the algorithm anymore but Jo Grant + the Third Doctor can make a kinda sick Astral Slide deck, as he's a very sick blink target/you're on the cycling plan anyways if you're going with Jo.
the first doctor works well with blink spells, because its an ETB, not a cast trigger, so you blink him and you get the Tardis back. my favorite doctor is the third doctor, with the +1/+1 counters and yeah, Sarah Jane Smith is the best companion for +1/+1 counters. BUT... what you really want is A food chain deck am I right? The Third doctor is a food chain commander, you pair it with Clara Oswald and make her black, so you get sultai. a funny thing you can do is put Dragon Throne of Tarkir on Old Gnawbone, now every creature gets +7/+7 and trample and makes lots of treasures, it's super funny. If you don't want to do accidental commander damage, you can put it on the commander and then every time a creature attacks, it makes treasures, buffing up your doctor, making your army bigger and bigger. the Seventh doctor is a design mistake, I'm putting this out there. this card is a mistake that I would like never to be repeated ever again. Note: Imposter mech is crew 3, so the ninth doctor cannot crew it by himself since he's a 2/4 ha! I suggested training grounds in the timey wimey upgrade video :) and yeah its cheap now If you want to make the war doctor powerful, you go mardu with Clara Oswald, because then you get necropotence and then you just blast face when you attack with the doctor. exile 30 cards and shoots someone for 30. Dauthi void walker also pumps up your commander. if you play a token deck with this "no more" is pretty cool, it's an instant for 2 W (3 mana) that says "any number of creatures you control phase out", so when you do this you get counters on your war doctor. But you point this out at the end of the video. on the twelfth doctor card, he looks like Doctor Ian Malcolm from Jurassic park 😂
Personally I put the 12th Doctor and Clara Oswald and made them a bit of a Voltron deck with some mean Background and other values attack with that also. (In Temur)
I did the same. Except I emphasized making copies of 12 to demonstrate voltron-type soceries a ton of times to make og copy of him huge and unblockable.
So that third doctor, go wide with all kinds of tokens deck, has 1 too many powerful helpers in the lotr stuff. Specifically the food token shenanigans Sam and the other Selesnian Hobbits and tree folk. Banquet guests is a huge powerhouse, letting you use that accumulated food to power out a huge stompy boy. Whenever I see tokens and green, my mind jumps to chatterfang, id definitely consider dropping the white companion for a black one just to make all my treasures and foods come with squirrels. My version of the third doctor mains green, using the broken combo that is landfall and simic to power the mana base and make the tokens with stuff like tireless tracker/provisioner. Then, the black provides opportunity to turn that pile of weak minions and chochkieys into life threatening power by running them through a grinder.
I used to buy a collector box and all the commander decks for each set and now I can’t even be bothered to buy a single booster. I’ve gone from excited to overwhelmed to simply being over mtg in the span of 1 year.
with the war doctor don't forget extra combats. If you have lethal on the war doctor and only one player open and 2 combat steps you could eliminate the 2 non open players and kill the open player next turn.
I have all 4 Doctor prebuilds plus a collector box. I built a 13th Doctor with Rose Tyler companion. Lorts of time walks and Time counters and time manipulation. Just seems like the most... (ahem) TIMELY timely wimely... build.
My new deck idea: (requires a rule zero convo) 4 color where you play every doctor as your commander, start with first doctor, then rather than pay commander tax to replay commander after he dies, you role a D6, and can then only play the Doctor that many regenerations down the line. If you run out of regenerations, you lose. Maybe have Clara as companion for flavor reasons. I think benefit of not having to play commander tax is offset by the random nature of the effects the doctors do.
Or more simply, shuffle all your Doctors together (as of this month, you can put a second copy of the 10th in there). At the start of the game and after your existing commander dies, turn the top card face up to be your next commander . And you could generalise this mechanic to other potential commanders, not just doctors. In deck building you would have to strike a balance: a few commanders can all synergise well with your deck, but then you risk running out. More commanders means more lives, but less focus.
@@tulliusexmisc2191 that's a cool idea too, I kinda like having them in order though. I think the power of not paying commander tax is balanced by lack of synergy across all Doctors (like you were alluding to), the randomness, and the extra loss condition. That is my hope at least.
@@RazgrizAce67 Another possible rule with sequential commanders would be to put dead commanders in the graveyeard and give them unearth, where the unearth cost equals the usual commander tax. This simulates the same way past Doctors occasionally come back for a special story.
The Fugitive Doctor, to me, is not an Investigate-centered deck. Elmar, Ulvenwald Informant + Tireless Tracker is enough. Vislor Turlough as Doctor's Companion! Black opens all the 'Entomb' effects which makes finding the Big Spell for any occasion easy. Give it a shot!
To add to this, I have this built and am using a Valakut/Reshape the earth package. Those cards plus Landfall Ob Nixilus, Dread Presence and Ancient Greenwarden will make great use of Reshape/Scapeshift/Splendid Rec

Wouldn't the eight doctor not work with the blinking effect because it doesn't matter where it's going it simply says if it leaves the battlefield, it doesn't care where it goes exile it instead?
I'm no expert, but I think blinking the eight doctor doesn't clear the exile clause because it's added to the recycled card' characteristics, not based on the doctor's state.

Anyone else think for flavor TARDIS should be able to be put on suspend 2 instead of being exiled or going to graveyard, but can only be crewed by Time Lords? The latter would have made the 1cc cascade trick harder to use with War Doctor.
Its very sad we didnt get any of the audio drama companions for 8. Charley would have been an easy go to, or Destrii to have some non human flavor to it.
I don't think you can blink the permanents that the Eighth Doctor got back because it says, "If this permanent would LEAVE the battlefield, exile it instead of putting it anywhere else." I could be wrong but it should be noted that the Eighth Doctor does not only care about if the permanent goes to the graveyard, but also if it is bounced, tucked, or exiled.
Can you really get rid of the Eight Doctor's clause with blink? it says "If this permanent would *leave the battlefield*, exile it *instead* of putting it anywhere else.", to me it sounds like blinking it and sending it to exile is still it leaving the battlefield and would be replaced with the clause... no?
@@saltyparis4885 Why is the fact that it's going to exile anyway makes it work? as I see it even if the replacement effect sends it to exile, it replaces the original text which has the part that returns it to the battlefield, leaving it with only the exile part and leaving it in exile....

Arguably Rose is the most flavorful companion for the War Doctor. It's not quite right but it's the closest you're gonna get.

She does bring a ton of vibrance to whatever she's doing in the show. I even watch her Agetha ad because it sounds so funny.

I like the Second Doctor with Vislor Turlough for an esper stax / forced draw build with things like Viceling to punish the high hand sizes while also making it difficult for them to bring their hand size back down.

I'm one of those weirdos who really likes the First Doctor's episodes and such, and the actual First Doctor, Susan, and TARDIS cards are all just so flavorful and bonkers fun that I was genuinely surprised that they put any amount of theme or flavor since he's honestly the most blank slate/bland of the numbered Doctors to make cards out of (I say that with love). So, I'm honestly enamored with the idea of a Planechase deck with them and just random shenanigans happening every turn. No real win con, just travelling and cascading until you end up somewhere XD
For the Seventh Doctor, also play cards without a mana cost! If they guess high, then you can play Crashing Footfalls like the Professor did in shuffle up and play! Inevitable Betrayal!
I know basically nothing about Dr Who, but this episode was so interesting simply because Rachel is such a great deck builder, and her sheer joy at finding all the synergies is so entertaining. A+ content
I like to play ultimate mindgames with the Seventh Doctor, and include uncastable spells, Inevitable Betrayal, Mox Tantalite. Restore Balance is hella funny.

I built the War Doctor with Susan for green and a manadork in the command zone. I was against two decks that both were able to kill me on their next turn. Got Flamekin Herald and Clara on the battlefield and cast Susan from the command zone. My only 1-drop in the deck was my sol ring already in play. 160 counters on the war doctor, took out both players on attack. I hadn't even realized the interaction between a low cost Susan and the doctor until I was about to cast it.

For the 12th Doctor, if you want to go the "Forcefully donate evil things" route, you can also run Sundial of the Infinite so you don't have to worry about getting 2 copies of your own bad cards that you're giving away.
Twelfth Doctor with your own Possibility Storm means you get to copy your first spell on a turn before it gets exiled from the stack, as long as you're willing to give an opponent a copy of that spell. Twelfth Doc can also play in the 99 for a War Doctor + K9 deck which should have lots of impulse draw and has its own reason to play extra combat spells. Tuned War Doctor + K9 lists should run Thought Lash and some way or ways to find TARDIS to do the 1cc cascade trick.
The idea of using the War Doctor as a check against Teferi's Protection makes me smile.
Professor from Tolarian Community College made a great Seventh's deck with suspend spells. Even if your opponent guessed wrong, you can still choose to NOT reveal the card and get a clue i.e. you can even make an opponent guess a land card.
Finally a home for Restore balance + teferis protection
As someone who built a Grixis Ninth Doctor / Clara Oswald deck as soon as I saw them previewed, I feel vindicated
Addendum: Bitterblossom, Dark Confidant, Keen Duelist, Descent into Avernus are great cards.. but if you run anything like them, also run cards that gain you life in your upkeep. I have literally drained myself out with just these cards and the Doctor. Player beware
After playing my 10th doctor/Rose Tyler deck for awhile now. Most of the times, Rose will get removed first before the 10th doctor, or they will remove both and still have other threats on board or they will remove the other things on board and prepare for whats in suspend while having to deal with rose/10th. the deck becomes a choose your poison on what to remove since anything can benefit your game plan usually, esp if your also running jhoira or eldrazis.
10:41 I currently have a Thirteenth doctor + Rose Tyler deck that focuses on suspend and it's very quickly become my go to, I can't suggest building them together enough for those that want a different flavor of timey wimey shenanigans
Side note with Amy and Chronomantic Escape: You don't need to buff Amy's power in order to cast it every turn, since one counter gets removed on upkeep and Amy will remove the other two with her base power. Also, toss an Embercleave on Amy for shenanigans

Just want to add to the leach 12 doctor:
Glorious end exile all spells and abilities on stack, so once your opponent copy resolves the turn ends and you lose your copy, so you will not have to worry about your next turn, but also you cant recover it from graveyard since it was exiled.
But the fun lesson to learn here is... you can do the same for all the other leaches, just add Obeka, brute chronologist (and/or sundial of infinite): at least once a turn you can cast something give a copy away and once only your stuff is on the stack end the turn and you are free of consequences, (you can even do that for the pacts)

The War Doctor would require me to put every piece of protection I own into it so going to stick with the 10th Doc/Rose Tyler as my Doctor Deck :) My playgroup was just flabbergasted by the amount of suspended cards which allowed me to pull out a win. Like you said with War Doc, second time around they know it can be dangerous. Time counters as a resource is a lot of fun. Rose Tyler feels about as dangerous as War Doc. She can get really big, really fast! I think people are going to want to remover her over the 10th Doc most times.

You could consider Sun Droplet for that Ninth Doctor + Clara build. Yeah it seems weak on first read, but each up keep and multiple upkeeps it can add up fast.

I was interested in building Second Doctor & Vislor Turlough, because with no max hand size and all the free card draw, Vislor will be doming people for a lot. Add some clones to copy Vislor to ensure all your opponents have a deal with the Black Guardian.
Thank you *very* much for this Rachel & Murph. I've been trying to figure out all the various pairings and how they make a playable, focused deck among the Dr. Who commanders. In particular, I've been trying to build them towards Vechicles. That said, the three precon decks each have very different themes, and often two or three sub-themes per deck, so there's enough 'blur' in the deck design process that it's hard to pick out what's helping and what isn't (e.g., the UWG deck builds both on Historic cards and on Tokens).
Really fun thing about twelfth doctor and twinning staff is if you copy twinning staff and give one to an opponent, you can effectively make a commander game into a 2 v 1 v 1. "Hey, I'm gonna team up with you till these other 2 are gone. Every time I copy a spell, you get 2 copies as well"
Rachel and I have very similar deck building ideologies so I’m glad she loved the 12th Dr as much as I did. I’m a bit sad they didn’t talk about how silly when you cast Vislor Thurlough; Opponents Demonstrate resolves gives it to a player, your copy resolves give it to a different player and then the original resolves for either yourself or the remaining player, 3 copies of your companion running around making more chaotic nonsense in the game. Hopefully you guys do a mini episode on the 3 cards from the secret lair drop or even just mash in Laura Croft in the video too.
Eleventh + Amy is quite strong if played at high power levels: several unique combo lines, less creatures to block you, cheaper things with higher impact (like dockside extortionist). Seems underrated to me.
Possibility Storm is the BEST card! It's pseudo-protection and adds a lot of counters to the War Doctor!

With Ryan Sinclair and the First Doctor, it seemed like they missed the fact the First Doctor can pump Ryan up just by Cascading.
I went with white with Ninth + Clara, because well Assemble the legion and enchantress stuff in white. Divine visitation. Green is also good at that but the temur Ninth deck is counters based but there is not yet a beginning of upkeep poliferate card yet.
A great job by the designers to make such interesting doctors and companions.
For the Seventh Doctor, I would have gone with Ace over Nyssa personally. Ace still lets you manipulate your artifact count, and she can fight creatures defending player controls to make sure they can't block McCoy. Then you get all the benefits of G as well, such as all the extra ramp, rather than being only in WU.
For sagas, I would personally prefer Sixth and Ian. Again, adding G for ramp and such, and Baker gives you a copy for free up front. Also, Twinning Staff and Errant Street Artist both work with Ian, since Replicate copies the spell.
For Tennant, in addition to Training Grounds, also add in Heartstone and Zirda the Dawnwalker. Heartstone makes all activated abilities of all creatures cost 1 less, and Zirda makes _all_ of your activated abilities from anywhere cost 2 less. (remember people, the Ikoria companions don't have to be your chosen companion; they can still just be in the 99)
If you want to play Clara and 12th together, use Backgrounds. There are a few auras and equipment like Thornbite Staff, that give triggered abilities, but if you have Passionate Archaeologist or Tavern Brawler, then both Clara and The Doctor will have that triggered ability AND Clara will copy it. Also flavor win for The Impossible Girl to have multiple and varied character backgrounds
I built the Second Doctor with Vislor Turlough. Howling mine, jace berlen, dictate of kurphix, font of mythos, ebony owl, black vise and other effects that force draws and then punish excessive cards in hand. Oh and fractured identity to give all my friends a copy of vislor.
I thought it'd be fun to imagine how these pairings would act if they met!
1/Yasmin: Yaz knows about regeneration, but she always somewhat struggled with the concept so I think meeting 1 would be a bit of a mindscrew for her, especially considering she has romantic feelings for her version of the Doctor. 1 would adopt Yaz like he adopted all his companions and Yaz is the most willing to just, let the Doctor do what they want so it'd be good
2/Leela: Leela was meant to be a "primitive" character who believes in superstitions and violence. 2 loved having a good time and goofing around, when he needed to get messy he preferred to be subtle about it. I feel like they'd clash, but Leela was able to grow on 4 so I'm sure she'd grow on 2 as well
3/Sarah Jane: They've met
4/Sarah Jane: They've also met
5/Susan: They met in the 5 Doctors special but also I think Susan would find it hilarious that her grandfather regenerated into such a young body
6/Barbara: Barbara would hate 6 tbh. He's too showy and cocky. Also, going off show canon and not extended media, I don't think she even knows that regeneration is a thing
7/Nyssa: This would be a genius dream team. I do wonder if Nyssa would eventually grow disheartened with 7's machinations, she's often referred to as being too sweet and 7 is famously a darker incarnation of the Doctor, but I'd love to see their brains work together
8/Ian: They'd get along fine but, like Barbara, I don't think Ian knows what regeneration is so that'd be pretty impressive
9/Clara: Teeeechnically Clara met 9, kinda sorta? But they never got to interact really, so I'm not sure how 9 would think of Clara. 9 tried to keep things hidden and pretend things were hunky dory and Clara would never stand for that. She also knows way too much about the Doctor's life for him to be comfortable around her I think
10/Rose: They've met
11/Amy: They've met
12/Romana: I would kill to see this pairing depicted. Romana's personality is a lot like Clara tbh, I think he'd appreciate having a second chance to... undo the damage he's done to those around him with another Time Lord like Romana
13/Yaz: Technically your pairing video with her isn't out but I'm assuming it'll be the face commanders so
Fugitive/Martha: Martha would get such a kick out of finding out that the Doctor has been a black woman but then she'd really hate Fugitive I think. One of the things about the Doctor that Martha loved was his refusal to take the easy way out and turn to violence, which Fugitive does all the time
War/K-9: The best possible pairing. I genuinely think that if War had had K-9 throughout the Time War than he might never have even considered using the Moment
I am considering making The 6th Doctor + Peri Brown. Being able to convoke out big historic cards and copy them is just very fun. Plus who doesn't want to copy Three Blind Mice?

Know this is kinda late/not super relevant for the algorithm anymore but Jo Grant + the Third Doctor can make a kinda sick Astral Slide deck, as he's a very sick blink target/you're on the cycling plan anyways if you're going with Jo.

the first doctor works well with blink spells, because its an ETB, not a cast trigger, so you blink him and you get the Tardis back. my favorite doctor is the third doctor, with the +1/+1 counters and yeah, Sarah Jane Smith is the best companion for +1/+1 counters. BUT... what you really want is A food chain deck am I right? The Third doctor is a food chain commander, you pair it with Clara Oswald and make her black, so you get sultai. a funny thing you can do is put Dragon Throne of Tarkir on Old Gnawbone, now every creature gets +7/+7 and trample and makes lots of treasures, it's super funny. If you don't want to do accidental commander damage, you can put it on the commander and then every time a creature attacks, it makes treasures, buffing up your doctor, making your army bigger and bigger.
the Seventh doctor is a design mistake, I'm putting this out there. this card is a mistake that I would like never to be repeated ever again.
Note: Imposter mech is crew 3, so the ninth doctor cannot crew it by himself since he's a 2/4

If you want to make the war doctor powerful, you go mardu with Clara Oswald, because then you get necropotence and then you just blast face when you attack with the doctor. exile 30 cards and shoots someone for 30. Dauthi void walker also pumps up your commander. if you play a token deck with this "no more" is pretty cool, it's an instant for 2 W (3 mana) that says "any number of creatures you control phase out", so when you do this you get counters on your war doctor. But you point this out at the end of the video.
on the twelfth doctor card, he looks like Doctor Ian Malcolm from Jurassic park 😂

Depending on the average mana value of your play group, Tasha's Hideous Laughter could be back breaking with The War Doctor and K-9.
Personally I put the 12th Doctor and Clara Oswald and made them a bit of a Voltron deck with some mean Background and other values attack with that also. (In Temur)
I did the same. Except I emphasized making copies of 12 to demonstrate voltron-type soceries a ton of times to make og copy of him huge and unblockable.

So that third doctor, go wide with all kinds of tokens deck, has 1 too many powerful helpers in the lotr stuff. Specifically the food token shenanigans Sam and the other Selesnian Hobbits and tree folk. Banquet guests is a huge powerhouse, letting you use that accumulated food to power out a huge stompy boy.
Whenever I see tokens and green, my mind jumps to chatterfang, id definitely consider dropping the white companion for a black one just to make all my treasures and foods come with squirrels.
My version of the third doctor mains green, using the broken combo that is landfall and simic to power the mana base and make the tokens with stuff like tireless tracker/provisioner. Then, the black provides opportunity to turn that pile of weak minions and chochkieys into life threatening power by running them through a grinder.
Note that you can't get Glorious End back with Mystic Sanctuary cause it's exiled with the end the turn effect.
I used to buy a collector box and all the commander decks for each set and now I can’t even be bothered to buy a single booster. I’ve gone from excited to overwhelmed to simply being over mtg in the span of 1 year.
with the war doctor don't forget extra combats. If you have lethal on the war doctor and only one player open and 2 combat steps you could eliminate the 2 non open players and kill the open player next turn.

multani, maro-sorcerer for the 2nd doc/leela deck! a lot like leela, but doesn’t need to be on the board for a long time to get big.
My new deck idea: (requires a rule zero convo) 4 color where you play every doctor as your commander, start with first doctor, then rather than pay commander tax to replay commander after he dies, you role a D6, and can then only play the Doctor that many regenerations down the line. If you run out of regenerations, you lose. Maybe have Clara as companion for flavor reasons.
I think benefit of not having to play commander tax is offset by the random nature of the effects the doctors do.
Or more simply, shuffle all your Doctors together (as of this month, you can put a second copy of the 10th in there). At the start of the game and after your existing commander dies, turn the top card face up to be your next commander . And you could generalise this mechanic to other potential commanders, not just doctors.
In deck building you would have to strike a balance: a few commanders can all synergise well with your deck, but then you risk running out. More commanders means more lives, but less focus.

I think the power of not paying commander tax is balanced by lack of synergy across all Doctors (like you were alluding to), the randomness, and the extra loss condition. That is my hope at least.
@@RazgrizAce67 Another possible rule with sequential commanders would be to put dead commanders in the graveyeard and give them unearth, where the unearth cost equals the usual commander tax. This simulates the same way past Doctors occasionally come back for a special story.
The Fugitive Doctor, to me, is not an Investigate-centered deck. Elmar, Ulvenwald Informant + Tireless Tracker is enough.

Wouldn't the eight doctor not work with the blinking effect because it doesn't matter where it's going it simply says if it leaves the battlefield, it doesn't care where it goes exile it instead?
I Made a Grouphug politics Deck with the second doctor and Leela. Won with a big Leela i gave trample. Parley is a good mechanic :D
I'm no expert, but I think blinking the eight doctor doesn't clear the exile clause because it's added to the recycled card' characteristics, not based on the doctor's state.

Anyone else think for flavor TARDIS should be able to be put on suspend 2 instead of being exiled or going to graveyard, but can only be crewed by Time Lords? The latter would have made the 1cc cascade trick harder to use with War Doctor.

So thing I like is 9+Clara, but have her as white, so you can play solemnity, so your cumulative upkeep cards don't get time counters.
I don't think you can blink the permanents that the Eighth Doctor got back because it says, "If this permanent would LEAVE the battlefield, exile it instead of putting it anywhere else." I could be wrong but it should be noted that the Eighth Doctor does not only care about if the permanent goes to the graveyard, but also if it is bounced, tucked, or exiled.

Can you really get rid of the Eight Doctor's clause with blink? it says "If this permanent would *leave the battlefield*, exile it *instead* of putting it anywhere else.", to me it sounds like blinking it and sending it to exile is still it leaving the battlefield and would be replaced with the clause... no?
Its already being exiled if you're blinking it so the replacement effect doesn't do anything. This trick also works with Unearth and such, pretty fun

Why is the fact that it's going to exile anyway makes it work? as I see it even if the replacement effect sends it to exile, it replaces the original text which has the part that returns it to the battlefield, leaving it with only the exile part and leaving it in exile....
