Just a note, it looked way darker in person, hence why I was calling the color black. If you want an even deeper black on your pieces, get them to a low heat and wipe them down with an oil soaked rag. When you hit the right temp range it will turn very, very dark.
Productive things to do between heats... 1. Clean and organize the dust covered tinderbox that is your shop 2. Hop up and down on a wheeled board like a geriatric dressed in the best 1930's garb one could find. Which will he choose?
You can absolutely do this with rebar.. just square it first.. it's actually a pretty nice size to work into a good square bar... just square out more than you need for the twist so you don't have to go back and try to make it longer..
